I think most of you people have gotten this wrong. This is not "what are your 5 favorite movies ever". If you are going to have to watch the same movies over and over then you're not going to want simplistic pap (see garrrettt's list, e.g.). You're going to want something engaging, something complicated, something where everytime you watch the film you're going to get something new out of it.

really the best choices would be foreign films so that when you got bored with the movie you could make a project of learning the language. If you wanted to confine your list to stuff you already know though you might make a list that looks something like:

1. Apocalypse Now Redux
2. Dr Strangelove
3. I'm Not There
4. Lawrence of Arabia
5. O Brother Where Art Thou (for some comic relief)

Now if you're a drooling retard you may find Adam Sandler movies complex enough as it is. But most people ought to aim higher.

Thanks for the mention tomboy. I know its fun to decide what the thread is about, but its about different things to different people. I took it as "if you can only have five movies (for the rest of YOUR life) I took it to mean i was deciding for myself, not for humanity. Your list is fine, for YOU. Those are all good movies you listed, but they simply wouldn't be on my list. And maybe an adam sandler movie makes some people laugh more than o brother where art thou. Anything Paul Thomas Anderson writes is not for a drooling retard.

i look around and can't find it. so i go up to the counter and say "excuse me, but do you have menace to society?" the lady looks it up in the computer and says "hmm, we should have one copy" and goes to look while i stand there.

these two thug guys come up and one of them goes "YOU really wanna watch menace?! yo, check this out, this girl right here wants to watch menace" and then nudges his friends. i just said yeah and smiled since i didn't really know what to say to that. he was like "they don't have it though, someone STOLE that shit". and sure enough, the lady came back to say that shouldn't couldn't find it.

i couldn't get into gone with the wind as a book, but i just love the movie. my mom is from the south, and my mom, granny and i used to watch every thanksgiving when they'd show it on TBS.

i love how scarlet slaps everyone and how they'd all be starving if it weren't for her. and the whole not knowing a good thing till it's gone gets me every time. i just think it's a good story, and i guess i can kind of relate to scarlet in a weird way. my mom says everyone's either a scarlet or a melanie and neither of us are melanies, lol.

i also like the production of the movie. it's fascinating because they have a lot of footage, sound bites and documentation related to the movie that most movies of that era simply do not have. the search for scarlet took like two years and had a national campaign. vivian leigh was finalized the night they filmed the burning of atlanta, which was the burning of old sets on the movie lot, such as the king kong gate.

anyways, it's definitely worth a watch. rent the special edition if it's available, because you can watch a lot of the old footage surrounding the film.

and hopeless, i always say "who gots snaps on the petro?! slangin all that shit in the hood and you ain't got no money" LOL

1)Ferris Bueller's Day Off... grew up on this
2)National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation..the family tradition
3)Rushmore
4)Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
5)Uncle Buck

Star Wars (as much as i want to cheat and say "all of em', i won't and will just go with 1977 Star Wars...i will accept the most updated version)

Amarcord (i had to have a Fellini...8 1/2 and Roma were fighting it out, Amarcord won this time because the score is one of my favorites)

Citizen Kane
