The huge English retail chain Tesco has opened an assload of these small grocery stores in the last 6 months or so.
They plan to open hundreds more.
Hated them at first but starting to grow on me....

bakersfield

not spam..I have no interest in the food biz..just a shopper that hates going to the grocery store..they are just popping up fucking everywhere & wondering if the consensus is good, bad or indifferent...

I like it..it's kinda like Trader Joe's but without all the specialty stuff. Picture a Trader Joe's that just sells (mainly) the basics.

They have their own version of Two Buck Chuck too.

I :pulse this place. I tried to post about it early on, but no one was interested. It's nice and small which is cool because big grocery stores frighten me. Also, it has a lot of prepared FRESH foods that you just heat up in the microwave or oven. I'm a lousy cook, so that works for me. I'm not too impressed with their produce although they say they try to buy it locally. I guess the local produce tastes pretty bland.

locachica73

local produce in Arizona? The only thing that grows out here is lemons, limes, oranges and cilantro.

Head west homie, near Surprise, and you can add;

cabbage
lettuce
yellow onion
green onion
spinach
collard greens
watermelon
cucumber
agave
apples
cherries
pecans
pears
peaches
pumpkins
apricots
plums
broccoli
beets
turnips

You must live in the concrete shithole of central Phoenix.

locachica73
07-10-2008, 07:38 AM
Well North Phoenix but yeah pretty concrete around here. I use to live down in Mesa and they grew peaches, I forgot about that. And I may have seen a corn field somewhere. I am from Oregon originally though, we grew everything, very well in fact.

I just wish we could grow raspberries here--black raspberries specifically. I think it has to be really cold to grow those. I've been subsisting on black raspberry jam for years, and I haven't eaten an actual black raspberry in probably 15 years. (my favorite fruit)

The only time I went to the Fresh & Easy, I came across some Ahi sashimi that was a week past its supposed expiration date. I don't think I'll take my business there anymore.

I remember as a kid going blackberry, raspberry and marionberry picking in the fields, I ate more then I put in my bucket. They paid like $1.80 a flat and I would make about $5 for a full days work but would leave with a full belly.

blackberries in AZ are bomb - from bashes nieghborhood ghetto market.

Fresh and Easy should be called Fresh and Fatty...

The stores name makes me feel like it is a health food store but it is not.
I love it but I dont do the grocery shopping at my house so whatevers.

Black raspberries are not the same thing as blackberries.

Also, I really like the cupcakes from F&E. Tasty. The butter chicken meal is pretty good too. And the spinach ravioli (with pesto sauce!).

i was really excited when this place first opened cause it's walking distance from my house.

i have to say, it's not all THAT great. i mean, i like their meat. and i like the pre-packaged food like cashew chicken and such. i also like that i can get smaller bags of salad for fairly cheap since generally i never finish a bag. but they don't have much selection, they didn't even have dayquil/nyquil when i was sick and they don't have my yogart, so there's no way i could shop their exclusively.

plus, the people with the samples are EXCEPTIONALLY annoying. this one guy followed me down EVERY AISLE, even with my headphones on he kept talking and i'd have to take them out. and he kept trying to push desert on me after i said i didn't want any and was just grabbing dinner for the night, and he kept saying "oh, come on, you don't look like a girl who has to say no to desert". it was gross. that was enough to make me stop going there actually.

i do like the convenience though. i just don't think it's the best thing since sliced bread.

That is one of the problems with them. Everything is so cookie-cutter & automatic, their sparse work force seems kind of entry-level and few & far between. Seems like they are trying to run them on auto-pilot.

Not sure if they will succeed, but it sounds like they plan on being on more corners than Walgreens before long.

like i LOVE the canne's bar & grill in san diego. i saw andy c there in 2004 and last year i went to see de la soul & krs-one there. we talked to some guys from the town, and they were just kinda bored with the whole thing because they do it every weekend. seemed like a shame, such a beautiful venue overlooking the beach with fucking heroes of hip hop, and they're bored.

I don't know. I only went there once and I saw the 10-day old ahi sashimi and proceeded to buy a smoothie and left. Once I saw the mishandling of sushi, it made my decision to not visit the store any longer that much easier. Oh yeah, then a week later a really cute Asian girl came to my door asking me for my support on boycotting the Fresh and Easy chain because of some health/human rights violation of the mother company. Whoa...Perhaps not as talented (individually) or historically important to hip-hop as the two groups you've mentioned, but they were instrumental in bridging the gap between De La Soul and the underground nowadays. I would put them up there in the same stratosphere (not as high) as those two. Without Souls, there wouldn't be no Deltron 3030 or Fat Lip doing his duet with Biz Markie @ the Glass House in '00. I wouldn't put the gap too far from each other.

Anyhow, now I'm going to have to check out the other F&E to see if they have anything to check out.

Fresh and Easy piss me off because they sell food in smaller quantities, which only requires more packaging, thus more trash. Fuck that shit.
Stop that. You're making me paranoid.

Also, on-topic I have never been to Fresh & Easy but that is my roommate's store of choice. It looks like it would be OK.

I go to Sunflower and Sprouts the most, occasionally stopping at Fry's for more generic/bulk items. I occasionally go to that Food City when I want specific mexican food items. There is a Whole Foods right next to a Trader Joe's a little further away but I don't really think to go there.

And you lived to tell the tale, impressive!

My 'gone postal' dad works at that P.O. on 29th and Greenway and always told me stories that made it out to be a bad part of town. Supposedly patrol cars don't go in there unless they're 3 to 4 deep at night. It's probably BS tho, I don't have any first hand personal experiences. If I can't get credible info from my pops, where can I?

Don't get me wrong, it isn't the best neighborhood but I was safe living there. And I would walk to places like Kampai and the Fry's and Blockbuster at night and I never felt scared.

Ehh. It's a toss-up.

I like alternating more than going to one exclusively, really. Both have great selections for fruits and vegetables, both have good bulk items (meaning granola and quinoa and flax seeds that you pick how much you want and bag it yourself, etc) and, generally, most things I want regularly. It's just that they have slightly different sets of these things and Sunflower carries the pita I really like and Sprouts has the bulk chocolate covered honeycombs I like or whatever.

They both are similar but seems Sprouts has better quality produce.
F&E doesn't have much produce, but I like shopping there & TJ's more than those stores.

"The Square" is where they have some really bad apartments, really bad trailer parks and it is also known as meth central. My brother lived in there for awhile and had 2 cars stolen from his parking spot and I refused to leave my car parked if I had to pick up the kids. Mostly prison tattooed meth addicts and people drinking out of a paper bag. I live across cave creek thank goodness but occasionally hear the helicoptors flying overhead on the way over.

Sunflower market is the best because it is all organic, great prices, good specials, great wine selection and an entire wall of beer and only 2 doors of the cooler are dedicated to domestic beers, the rest is crazy shit you can't get anywhere else. Although they don't have the individual packaged dinners like F & E.

Isn't that Paradise Valley? I cannot imagine ANYTHING in that area being so bad as to require multiple piggies at night. I'm sure it's BS.

Nothing in any part of Maricopa county can compare to the westside. And I don't mean anything past 75th avenue, either. McDowell to Indian School and 35th avenue to 67th is as ghetto as it gets. I used to live in Maryvale and saw some pretty crazy shit. My mom would get her house broken into a few times each year. Sooo glad she doesn't live there anymore.

I am eagerly anticipating the opening of the F&E on 7th Ave & Indian School next month.

It is PV school district but still considered a Phoenix area. It is only like a 4 mile area that is just bad, but that is what happens when you build a bunch of new shit around a bunch of old shit. A ton of Carneceria's and drive through liquor stores on one block and million dollar houses on the hill next door. I am pretty sure the trailer parks were there first though.

Mr. Dylanja
07-10-2008, 08:21 PM
I think it's north of PV, like I said mostly vato's, mostly illegal.

As far as the south/west side you speak of, I def agree that's the worst part of town 4 sure. I refer to that area as "the hood".

Brutal about the leak, not funny at all. LOL!

The Town of Paradise Valley (http://www.ci.paradise-valley.az.us/docs/Map_Book/Index 2006.pdf) only goes as far North as Shea. And even then it's just a little tip.

Paradise Valley High School, though, is at (about) 40th Street and Bell Rd, four miles North and a mile West of that tip.

And the Northeast corner of what THE SQUARE (as previously defined) is a mile West of PVHS.

I'm going through this for the out of towners that are following along. And the various in-towners that aren't very familiar with directions. Like me.

The one downtown PHX on Roosevelt even has a full-on restaurant they run next to it -- Tradiciones. The family loves it...really good food.

Yeah, I just found a TJ's on Baseline and Gilbert which is maybe 6 or 7 miles from me. I should try it out sometime. There's a Sprouts I think at Higley and the 60 freeway which is 5 miles away. I'm scared to experiment with different stores though. I'm a bit high strung.

Wal-mart also rarely pays out on worker's compensation cases according to the Phoenix New Times. They fight 94% of workers' claims as opposed to other employers who fight about 17% of claims.

I have also read somewhere that they have their single moms that work there only work enough hours keep them as part time employees, that way they can still qualify for state funded insurance/benifits and then Wal-Mart doesn't have to cover them on their insurance. Not sure where I read it though, it was awhile ago.

I hope F&E kicks Wal-Mart's ass when the try to go head to head with them with their Marketside stores (that are a complete rip-off of F&E).
I read that F&E's parent company dominates Wal-Mart in some parts of the world (Asia, Britain).

Here comes more to AZ.....

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, which opened its 20th Valley store at 7th Avenue and Indian School Road in Phoenix on Wednesday, has announced opening dates and locations for four more stores.

The California-based chain of small grocery stores has 37 stores in the works for the Phoenix metro area. It also is opening stores in California and Nevada.

Here are the locations and opening dates of the next Valley stores:
• Dobson and Queen Creek roads in Chandler on Sept. 10.

• Gilbert Road and Southern Avenue in Mesa on Sept. 10.

• Scottsdale Road and Shea Boulevard in Scottsdale on Aug. 27.

• Baseline and Kyrene roads in Tempe on Sept. 10.

Fresh & Easy, whose parent company is Britain's Tesco PLC, employs 20 to 30 people at each store. Starting salaries in Arizona are $9 an hour.

The company offers employees the opportunity to work at least 20 hours per week, which entitles them to healthcare. The jobs also offer 401(k)s with a company match the opportunity to earn a quarterly bonus of up to 10 percent.

I remember as a kid going blackberry, raspberry and marionberry picking in the fields, I ate more then I put in my bucket. They paid like $1.80 a flat and I would make about $5 for a full days work but would leave with a full belly.

Too bad you didn't get heatstroke.
