Have you ever thought the whole world of a group or musician that everyone else couldn't say enough bad things about?

Case in point. I LOVE Poets of the Fall (http://www.last.fm/music/Poets+of+the+Fall)(lookit my avatar!) But every time (not just here, other boards too) when I post about them, everyone jumps on me talking about how generic they are and how much they suck.

Has this kind of thing happened to anyone else? How do you deal with it?

What's your favorite guilty pleasure?

The wacky thing about this thread is somebody else has got to like the music you like. Otherwise you would never have heard or seen it in the first place. Have you ever gone to a show and you were the only one there? If you have a recorded version of the music and it wasn't given to you directly by the artists, more than likely someone else likes it.

i guess if you're a terrible muscian / singer and everybody hates your shit except you, this thread might make a little sense.

I did too. I had never heard them before, and then that came out and I thought it was pretty good. I went and checked out their old stuff and it was shit. It's like some dumped a stack of Queen and Pink Floyd CDs on their doorstep and they said "Oh, THIS is what music is supposed to sound like." I don't mind a rip-odd as long as you're ripping off something good.

It doesn't really fit this thread, since a million annoying 13 year olds like it too. My answer would probably be some cheeseball early 90's techno-pop like Manufacture.

Andrew W.K. is one of the best live performers I have ever seen. He only played for half an hour at Warped Tour and it is still to this day one of the best shows I have ever been too. The crowd was rowdy as hell, but in a friendly way. Everyone was there to have a good time together, not to beat the living fuck out of one another. So if you ever get the chance to see Andrew W.K. live... do it.
I also saw him do a spoken word lecture last year. He is very though provoking, insightful even. He also broke a table. It was fucking awesome. I talked to him for about 20 minutes afterwards and he is one of the nicest, smartest, funniest, most genuine guys I have ever met.

I should also mention he is not a guilty pleasure of mine. I am very open about how much I enjoy Andrew W.K. In fact, I wore an Andrew W.K. shirt Saturday at Coachella this year. I am wearing it in a few pictures with board members.

at the end of their run, they were just regular old math metal, but they started out really cool. LD50 was a really really good concept album. it was technically and aurally challenging.
but everybody just saw the video for "dig" (one of the only songs in 4/4 on the album) and took the costumes seriously and there went their credibility. it's too bad. ryan martinie is an animal

I don't think that is what they, the band, were going for, but that is why I like their music. I can't listen to them too often though. Calm down, Salah. I was kidding about both of them. I can tolerate a little Air Supply, but it has a negative connotation for me that makes their songs a tad bit bitter to even hear. :)

Backwater
07-10-2008, 11:25 PM
Just because you can't party to it doesn't mean everyone doesn't appreciate it for what it was intended to be. Everyone loves it while they're watching the movie. If you bump Dr. Dre during Casablanca people are going to be pissed as well. That doesn't mean everyone doesn't love his music.

Oh, well, I love Sarah McLachlan. I heard her first album in a mall record store (cassette store?) when I was 15, and I've been in love with her music ever since. Didn't care too much for the last album though, and I missed that tour. :(

I also interviewed her for my college radio station circa 1995, and she was really nice and patient with me (I was the worst interviewer ever).

also: I hit 2 of the 3 Lilith Fair tours, even have the naked lady Lilith Fair shirt to prove it. :p

i guess this is the perfect thread to say my first concert ever was the lilith fair :x i went to the one at desert sky pavillion back in like 1997 with a girlfriend from my boarding school. i really just wanted to see fiona apple and jewel. jewel went to our sister boarding school and became big about the time i went there, so we were all big fans of hers and glad to see one of us "make it". fiona was only on the tour for like 4 months too so i'm glad i went.

Truth.
