and this should interest people..

“..The PUMPKINS are coming prepared with completely different set lists in each of the multi-night engagements with no songs being repeated over the course of the two night run. Night #1 is being called “Black Sunshine,” while night #2 will be dubbed “White Crosses.” A special two-night ticket bundle will be available for all multi-night engagements.

So, the NY shows are $49-89 for each day and then the double nighter is $53-93. Hopefully the GIbson package will be up soon.

(part of a) Billy Blog!
"First off, the 2 night format is about playing the most songs over 2 nights that would hopefully create very distinct shows from one another. No song will be repeated means exactly as it sounds, if you go to show #1 of a 2 night stand (black sunshine!), you wouldn't hear anything on night # 2 (white crosses) that you heard song-wise on the first night. The cities where we are playing only 1 show will feature an amalgamated show that will most likely have some songs we won't be playing in the 2 night format shows, but take from both the sunshine and the crosses show."

I must say I'm f'in excited for these.
*Sun 11/30 San Diego, CA RIMAC Arena (SS) Even though the sound isn't great, I'm so there. GA, woo!!
*Tue 12/2 Los Angeles, CA Gibson Amphitheatre (sunshine)
*Wed 12/3 Los Angeles, CA Gibson Amphitheatre (crosses)

I might just get it for both nights. I don't care if this is not the original lineup, I have a soft spot for the band. And even though it is a lot, I might have done the 5 star for one night had I not blown a shit ton on my honeymoon.

Cherub Rock could be played on either night. It rips hard enough to be played on the Black Sunshine night. But it would also fit with White Crosses theme.

Ok, what the crap is up with the ticket prices? The 2 night package for Kansas City is 1,000 but the single day tickets are like 50 each.
And why does NY get a cheaper 2 nighter than LA? It's almost the same price as a single ticket. This is pissing me right the f off.

Is anyone going to the LA shows by themself? I'm kinda thinking about it because it's too expensive. Maybe one night by myself. Uggh.

wow, the kimmel show was fucking fantastic.

im a casual pumpkins fan so I can't say what songs they played. (second song was the only one that sounded familar,) they played 4 songs, roughly around 35-40 minutes i would say. they fucking ripped it. seriously sounded amazingly. I was "eh" on Zwan live and the whole semi reunion thing, but Billy and Jimmy sounded and played amazing. After the third song they just jammed for 20 minutes. it was nuts. Billy mixed in his take of Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner and even played with his teeth. He seemed to be in a great mood, smiling and making jokes.

my god the bassist is hot as fuck. imagine a real life tinkerbell in a skintight body suit with pigtales.

for those with tickets to any show I think you'll be well happy. I wish I had tickets to em

Surprisingly, it still took a day or so to sell out. Even at only $40 which was even cheaper than the tour they did.

Info around here says there is no opening band, they are taping the show, and it is slotted for 2.5 hours.

the reviews of the "special halloween acoustic night with the pumpkins" are not good, not good at all. I talked with a few people who went and they are pissed to say the least, then i started reading the c-bus music blogs. Over at donewaiting one fan chimes in the same thoughts as everyone else who went.

the first hour was acoustic (though all the guitars were distorted) and featured covers such as "monster mash", "wipeout" and "hang on sloopy". there were no acoustic pumpkins songs. talk about your false advertising. it was amusing for a couple songs, but wore thin when the band seemed to not really know how to play said tunes. What could have been a cool acoustic SP thing was just a few people goofing around like some bad college party band, and said band was charging you $50 to see them do it. LAME!!!! One thing we defintely found out, Billy CAN NOT fucking sing a lick (not that he ever could), but when you take the loud distortion out, the cover up is gone and his lame voice exposed to its ear splitting horror.

then there was a twenty or so minute break.

when they came back out for an electric set, they played three or so singles in the next hour and a half. i didn't really know anything else they played cuz it was off the new crap album mostly.

i wish i had my money and night back. Most in attendance felt VERY RIPPED OFF! I hate Billy fucking Corgan for this. Fuck him and his lame ass band.

set 1 ("acoustic")
1. louie, louie
2. hang on sloopy
3. the monster mash
4. wipeout
5. some instrumental with poole on flute
6. the gambler
7. in-a-gadda-da-vida (guest vocals by a roadie dude in a dodgers sweatshirt)
--- faked nervous breakdown (end set 1) ---

set 2 (electric)
1. tarantula
2. g.l.o.w.
3. siva
4. speed kills
5. superchrist
6. as rome burns
7. the sounds of silence
8. a song for a son

Poor setlist choices, awful-sounding music, and confounding sartorial decisions mixed with heavy doses of audience mockery: These are the reports we've been getting about the Smashing Pumpkins' "20th Anniversary Tour", and guesses at Billy Corgan's motivations can only confuse and infuriate.Corgan lashed out at his band's fans once again at a recent Chicago gig, and this outburst comes with a YouTube video [via Stereogum].
I mean, we get it, guy! You released a mediocre album and were disappointed when people thought it was mediocre. But Billy, let's be clear: You say in that video, "Last I checked we were in an alternative band. 'Alternative' means 'different than what everyone else is doing,' including those reunion bands that go out and just play the old songs."

Incorrect! "Alternative" means nothing in 2008, and the fact that you don't seem to realize that probably has a lot to do with your confusion over people's disappointment when you don't just play your good songs instead of meandering off into formless noise jams. You can do your own thing all you want, but it's rude, to say the least, to begrudge people their expectations when they pay hundreds of dollars to see you. And you can mock "those reunion bands" all you want, but your insistence on ruining people's nostalgic fondness for your band instead of playing to it doesn't change the fact that you're cashing in, just like they are.

Personally, I don't buy that this intentional audience befuddling is some kind of pure pursuit of an artistic muse. It seems like the flailing around of an artist who has declined and is unwilling to face that truth even when his own fans proclaim it so by their reactions to his art.

While Stereogum's hypothesis that Corgan's antics could be "some Tony Clifton crowd-antagonizing performance art BS" is certainly interesting, I don't buy that either. The man has been too sincerely whiny and self-indulgent in the past for all of this to be one big joke.

So what do we take from this: Billy Corgan is crazy? We knew that. This "20th Anniversary Tour" might not live up to the expectations of longtime Pumpkins fans? We could have guessed that. Do we "give [them] another chance," as Corgan requested in a disingenuous apology to "those of you we've disappointed"?

It seems to me that Corgan himself suggested the best thing to do when he said, "It doesn't go anywhere from here. You might as well head to your cars."

Fuck Billy Corgan.

It was good, but it wasn't great. There was only one time I really felt that either show had a chance for greatness (Soma -> Cherub -> Zero -> Bodies), but the setlists were not solidly constructed from an energy standpoint. I am glad I went, but I can't say I was blown away, unfortunately. Hearing his complaining at the pre-show Q&A before night 1 left a bad taste in my mouth, as well.

With that said, I am extremely pleased I was able to finally hear Cupid de Locke, Bodies, and Galapagos. And it was great to hear Mayonaise and Age of Innocence again after 8 years.

The Great Pumpkin Homecoming

If they fell on night one, dusted themselves off for night two, and started running again on night three, the Smashing Pumpkins soared three weeks later on night four of what has become The Great Pumpkin Homecoming. Maybe it was the intimate backdrop of the Aragon Ballroom, but the Pumpkins certainly felt like the Pumpkins again. The packed though not sold out crowd flooded the floor and terraces, clapping and cheering endlessly for their hometown heroes throughout the two and a half hour set.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v605/mroffman/3092614361_84194e70a5.jpg

No time was wasted and within ten minutes Corgan and co. were on stage. The gloomy carnival music resonated in the dark ballroom, where there was little to be seen, save for the teasing jack o’ lantern on stage. Fans roared and stomped, ready for some Pumpkins action, and that’s exactly what happened seconds after when the band ripped right into Mellon Collie’s classic single, “Tonight, Tonight”. Immediately, any hardcore Pumpkins fan knew that something was different, considering the band hasn’t typically been opening with this tune. This assumption was confirmed when Corgan continued without a moment to reflect, diving head on into hit after hit: “Tarantula” into “Stand Inside Your Love” into “Mayonaise” and immediately into “Today”.

Fans were brilliantly confused. After having been forewarned by every media outlet that this was a band who forgot about their hits, who neglected their audience, and who did their own thing, hearing a greatest hits medley was like a surprising left hook punch. Throughout every song, even during last year’s “Tarantula”, the Chicago audience reached high for the ceiling’s painted night sky, singing word for word, to which Corgan gave appreciation for following “Today.” Then came what most might have been dreading and few were salivating for: “Gossamer.”

The sustained jam adventure, which at one time lasted nearly forty minutes, was pretty tight and short this time around. However, Corgan still remained jovial, visibly enjoying the many riff riots at the end as he laughed about with rhythm guitarist Jeff Schroeder. Before anyone knew it, the distortion crawled away and Corgan was behind the acoustic, where he churned up residency favorite “99 Floors” and up and coming “Owata”, both of which had the audience in a daze. That hardly lasted, however, as the striped frontman slung on the ol’ electric and slunk into a hair raising performance of “Soma”, which inevitably brought up a new string of hits: “Cherub Rock”, “Zero”, and “Bodies.”

Finally, after almost two hours, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin broke his shell and came to life. That’s not to say he wasn’t “on” beforehand, he most certainly was, he just felt more subdued, so to speak. “United States”, the only other cut off Zeitgeist for the night, brought him into the foreground, where he kicked up a storm. Then came some more acoustic additions: the new crowd favorite “A Song for a Son”, Mellon Collie b-side “Medellia of the Gray Skies” and the newly penned “Communion”. As if to please those “angry bearded bloggers” as he stated, Corgan threw out an extra angsty rendition of “Bullet With Butterfly Wings”, basically a prologue for “Superchrist” and the spacey-still unnecessary cover of Pink Floyd’s “Set the Controls to the Heart of the Sun.”

What was most endearing about the entire concert was the inclusion of Corgan’s half brother, Jesse Corgan. His half-brother, who has battled with mild cerebral palsy and Tourette’s syndrome, came on during “Set The Controls”, playing the tambourine and the tribal drums. It was a heart warming moment seeing the two Corgans having fun with the half a dozen instruments available to them, and this continued in what was quite possibly the best encore of the band’s recent career. A stormy “Ava Adore” subsided into a dead on cut of “1979″, all finishing with a tear jerking performance of “Disarm”, which Corgan played next to Jesse. When the band finished, everyone remained standing, applauding ’til their cold hands dried up and their coarse throats were itching for water. If anyone was still a “hater”, they might need to find a new band to admonish. The Pumpkins delivered ten fold and yet still remained true to their convictions… how quaint, huh?

Billy Corgan has a SHITLOAD more to rant about. sigh....

Billy Corgan dishes on the Smashing Pumpkins: The past is dead to me

Corgan: Our primary function now is to be a singles band, that drives Pumpkins Inc. through singles. We'll still be creative, but in a different form. We won't do shows like this anymore, where we try to draw a good crowd and balance the past with the present. We'll go small and do exactly what we want to do and stop playing catalogue. We'll be like a new band that can't rely on old gimmicks. I'm not stupid. I want people to feel good about what we do. What we weren't getting [from playing a more balanced show with older songs] was excitement. We're in the polarizing business. We don't want a pat on the back: Good to have you back. We want a reaction, even if it's a negative reaction.

That's just one of the quotes the ENTIRE interview with Greg Kot of the Tribune and Sound Opinions is here.

i don't see whats wrong with the second quote...i actually applaud them for doing that...he obviously doesn't like the old stuff, and that's what the fans were there for...so he is gonna just play the new stuff now and basically become a new band and whoever likes them for the new stuff will like the band and come out and see them...

We found with “Zeitgeist” that the alternative audience isn’t alternative anymore. They’re a pop audience that listens to Nickelback. So doing a 10-minute song, nobody will listen to it. We have to come up with singles like “1979,” and come up with songs that sound good on the radio. We have to write those kinds of songs.

See, this is where he is wrong. I'm not listening to Nickelback and I don't think the "alternative" crowd is listening to Nickelback now. I think Billy is wasting all of his time trying to put his finger on the pulse of cross sections of fans when the fans simply want them to rock. Fuck his genre assumptions.

By now you have heard the news of my departure from the Smashing Pumpkins. I will say, without going into any unnecessary details that this represents a positive move forward for me. I can no longer commit all of my energy into something that I don’t fully possess. I won’t pretend I’m into something I’m not. I won’t do it to myself, you the fan, or my former partner. I can’t just, “Cash the check” so to speak. Music is my life. It is sacred. It deserves the highest commitment at every level and the Pumpkins are certainly no different. I’m sorry but it really IS that simple. There is no drama, bad blood, or anything else but a full commitment to music. My best goes out to Billy and I’m glad he has chosen to continue under the name. It is his right. I will continue to make music with the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex as well as pursuing other musical interests. I feel that I have a long way to go and a lot to give. Thanks to everyone for your kind words and support through all of this. I am constantly humbled by all of you! It is an honor and a privilege to play music for a living and I don’t take it for granted not even for a second.

Stay tuned……. JC
