i was watching Splitz Enz "I Got You" and i was thinking while loving it "Yeah, this is one of the Greatest Songs Ever." Of course there are a lot of those and this thread is about posting the good sounding versions, so over time you can revisit and click away at what your fine friends here think is truly Awesome.

Limitation: One clip per post. Feel free to attach reasons you feel the song has All Time Greatness for you (and maybe the whole universe); but that's not necessary because you picked one of the Greatest Songs Ever and it should sing for itself. Hugely popular, barely known...just make sure it really is Great. Please ponder the Greatness and be sure in your heart, that way we can avoid this becoming an insult fest.

PS: This was inspired by the great What Are You Listening to Right Now (http://coachella.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18) thread. i wanted to put "I Got You", but it wasn't "now" anymore.

this song is just so . . . so . . . it's Holland 1945. no explanation needed.

That's nice. STP's is a very good song. i think Split Enz's "I Got You" (only similar in title) is one for the ages. Now if you think STP's is one of the Greatest Songs Ever, post a clip (and maybe a story if you got the time).

And that 1945 song is pretty great.

as far as story, i don't know that i have a great one. i just love chopin. i love the period. i love the drama. and i love the sadness of his nocturnes, all of them. the preludes are beautiful too, like that no. 4 one (i think) that everyone who knows how to play the piano plays in a movie. it's just beautiful.

this is the first song i heard and really remembered by chopin. it was in tombstone, which i loved as a little girl. my dad used to run cattle in the catilina mountains, and my aunt and uncle own a cattle ranch. i dunno, my dad says when he grows up, he wants to be a cowboy, i guess i just have an affinity.

anyways, i remember back in the napster days, my ex and i tried forever to find the nocturne but had so much trouble. it wasn't until i finally found a chopin compilation at borders, after listening to every cd on their listening stations, that i finally found the right nocturne. instantly i knew.

i've bought the sheet music, but it's much too difficult for someone who's self-taught and not very naturally musical. i want it played at my funeral, and my wedding for that matter. i love every note of it.

this is kind of a boring story, but what's funny is i burned a cd for my dad with this on it of just chopin for him to listen to at work. i always draw something on CDs i burn for people, so i drew a stick figure of doc holiday playing at the piano and titled the cd "frederick fucking chopin".

well, he works at the palo verde nuclear generating station (yes, like homer). maybe a few months to a year ago there was an "incident" where one of his co-workers had the residue of a bomb in the back of his truck. according to my dad, the whole thing was a complete misunderstanding.

but this is palo verde. they had the police, the fbi, the media, everyone was watching this guy. i guess he had to use my dad's computer for something because his had been confiscated. he opened the cd tray to put in a cd and saw my lovely drawing with "fucking" written on it, lol. the guy brings it to my dad and says "what, you tryin to get me in trouble, kenny?!"

i thought that was cute. ok, that was a really long and boring post, but i really do love this song <3 <3 <3

and i remember when we did a thread like this before and the hoo i think it was posted narcolepsy by ben folds five. that would probably be my other favourite.

So hard to choose one, but I think this best represents what I want to share.

Some of you know, The Clash is my (current) all time fave band. I first really began to listen to them my sophmore year in highschool. Up until this time, I only knew of the Clash from what I saw on MTV: Should I stay..., Rock the Casbah, etc.
My friend, we'll call him Brad, since that's his name, would drive me to school. Brad had a unique taste in music. He listened to bands that I was not familiar with at the time...like REM, The Cure, Replacements, Roxy Music, and, The Clash.
I remember him asking me, "Do you like the Clash?" I said, that I thought I did and named the songs I knew. He just kind of smirked at me, and popped in London Calling.

Nothing has been the same since. My musical journey lead me to so many other great bands and artists that I still enjoy. Once I got the "bug" of discovering new music, I haven't stopped. Hearing "Clampdown" and the rest of London Calling really got me started on that path.

Thanks, Brad.

Orbital is one of my favorite musical projects. Every live show was fantastic (only got to see 5). When i used to dj at Groove Radio i used to do a segment called "Insomniac Roll Call". The premise was to record the audience up at 4AM just saying who they were and what the hell they were doing up so late. i would edit it all together and play it over a song with a long intro. "Halcyon and On and On" got much use for that fine piece of communal late night greetings and reporting:

I considered that, but decided rules have no place in rock & roll.

This is not limted to rock & roll. The one post is respect to the individuality of the song. It's as if each post is a single in your collection. When you double/triple/quadruple/and so on them up, your song's Greatness gets a little diluted in being part of a compilation. Of course what i'm saying can be construed as a load of shit (which i'm even smelling), but i made the rules(winking emoticon goes here).

Never has "It's better to die on your feet than live on your knees" sounded so Great. Midnight Oil's "The Power and the Passion". If you've seen Midnight Oil live, you know they kick serious ass. Coachella 2009, please.

Did you see my write-up on them in the "Young'uns Guide" thread? I also posted a couple mixes there, along with two or three videos if you're interested.

Rolling Stone thought they could make a list on the 500 greatest songs ever...

But they put Purple Rain at 143. Seriously, it should be in the top 50.
There was also plenty of songs missing from that list

Foreplay / Long Time by Boston is one of my all time favorites that just gets stuck in my hea periodically without provocation. When i imagined dj sets, i wanted to end one of them with this and just go back and forth to the "you'll forget about me" and end it on the "i've been gone". Norman Cook had a similar idea in his Brighton Beach show...muther fucker.

Listening to this thread is Excellent. Now for the annoying taskmaster part...

Hey Valarie! Did you read the first post or the 2 times i had to bring out the ruler and smack some knuckles!?!?!?

Limitation: One clip per post. Feel free to attach reasons you feel the song has All Time Greatness for you (and maybe the whole universe); but that's not necessary because you picked one of the Greatest Songs Ever and it should sing for itself. Hugely popular, barely known...just make sure it really is Great. Please ponder the Greatness and be sure in your heart, that way we can avoid this becoming an insult fest.

And i also say "E Tu Nipples?!...No! Not you Nipples!" (Cry up to the sky)

Now y'all are getting the Great part down...Now follow the aesthetic or you'll make me take off this belt...wait...where's my belt? damn it. lost my belt.

Well, you know...trouble's gonna go down.

(adjust 3 piece suit without a belt)

Now let's not fight. And that was going to make me post a clip for "This Time" by INXS; but then i thought i'd go with this instead:

And that was going to make me post a clip for "This Time" by INXS; but then i thought i'd go with this instead:

by6uESG9TGg

So I should split it up into multiple posts? That's retarded. Nobody's going to pay any attention to my choices if I make them in one or 17 posts. If somebody clicks the first youtube I post and doesn't like it, they're gonna move on and go to the next post, I'm just affording the opportunity that given the SLIM CHANCE that someone clicks on my first one and likes it and then clicks on my second one and likes it that they will like the rest as well.

No, I didn't read the thread. I can't read threads in an orderly manner anymore. I just click and shoot. Forgive me my one post, I'll stop posting videos.

Did you read the title of the thread? Greatest. Singular. The point is not to just post a bunch of songs you love, but to post ONE that you don't think anyone could not love. That's what keeps the quality up.

keep posting, but perhaps it would be a good idea posting the name of the song and not only the video, so people don't have to click every youtube to see what song it is, or to see if the song we want to put was already mentioned.

and i didn't do it in my last post. the song was the clash - train in vain.

I'm pretty sure the title of the thread says "Songs." This is the end of the attention you get from me.

i paid attention to your choices and Jesse Jackson told me i was Somebody a long time ago. The choice for some formatting to this thread was poorly explained like this a few pages ago:

The one post is respect to the individuality of the song. It's as if each post is a single in your collection. When you double/triple/quadruple/and so on them up, your song's Greatness gets a little diluted in being part of a compilation. Of course what i'm saying can be construed as a load of shit (which i'm even smelling), but i made the rules(winking emoticon goes here).

No need to go and break up the past post. Just keep it on the straight and narrow from now on you crazy rebel.

You are forgiven (sloppy sign of the cross).

AND for you folk just putting up titles and no clips (or at least links), put a little effort into it. That is all.

Anyways here's another from me. It is Tool Laterauls. After the first 5 mins this song just gets so good, the drumming is amazing. This is my favorite song to hear live.

Faithless "Insomnia"...i went with the CEC edit. i used to be an overnight dj on a station called Groove Radio. i would throw out on occasion i was giving myself the Faithless challenge. Around the 2:50 mark, Maxi Jazz says "Here we are, half past 3 in the morning...let's roll another one". my goal was to have it be exactly 3:30AM when he said that. i would verify it by having the time lady come up after he said it (the time is now 3:30, and ten seconds). Love this Awesome Song.

Beck - Modern Guilt

feNrapFCPzg

Yup, already.

Hey....Hey...da da da da

I feel uptight when I walk in the city
I feel so cold when I'm at home
Feels like everything's starting to hit me
I lost my bed ten minutes ago

Modern guilt I'm staring at nothing
Modern guilt I'm under lock and key
It's not what I have changed,
Turning into convention
Don't know what I've done but I feel ashamed
Standing outside the glass room sidewalk
These people talk about impossible things
And I'm falling down the conversations
Another palm beats into you

Modern guilt is all in our hands
Modern guilt won't get me to bed
Say what you will
Smoking my cigarette
Don't know what I've done but I feel afraid

Da da da...

f'ing awesome song! up next are some songs (made in the last 3 years) that I'm pretty sure will be included in my Top 100/200/500 ;) Greatest Songs of All-Time.

i think so, but the problem of having numerous clips on pause can also be avoided. All those paused clips can slow things down a bit. One solution is just to go back and forth on the browser. Another is to give someone a heads up as to what the clip is before they click it. The title and song also makes it easier not to double up song posts (London Calling is a few pages back..unlabeled).

You don't "have to" (this is the internets after all), it's just something to maintain a little order for everybody in this place.....
