In response to you both: such a shame. Gilted Generation is easily their best work. It was way more underground sounding, vibey, and rocking. It was before they decided they were going to have a schtic (sic?) and pretend to be rave punkers and flail around and scream and yelp on stage.

Music For The Jilted Generation was pretty groundbreaking for the time. Not only where they able to survive the toytown/hardcore rave tag but Liam wrote an album that really transcended genres and defined new ones. Much of the cultural impact of this album has been lost due to the rapidly evolving nature of EDM, which is truly a shame.

Some of my all time favorites... (I've been listening to this stuff since 91)

God Within - Raincry
Rabbit In The Moon - Out Of Body Experience
Gus Gus - Purple (Sasha vs The Light Remix)
The Prodigy - Hyperspeed
High Contrast - Made It Last Night
Aphex Twin - Digeredoo
Bassbin Twins - 2 Turntables & A Crate Full Of Skint
Orbital - The Box
The Chemical Brothers - Chemical Beats
Armand Van Helden - The Funk Phenomena
BT - Fibonacci Sequence
Tomcraft - Overdose
Dieselboy & Technical Itch - Atlantic State
Tranquillity Bass - Cantamilla
MSTRKRFT - Street Justice
Moby - Unloved Symphony

You make good points, but I still have to hail FOTL as the best because it is the biggest evolution in their music between albums, and it is a masterpiece (that is opinion though). While MFTJG has a ton of classics, and it is indeed an excellent album, FOTL is just a bit better. But it's a never ending debate.

However, their act with FOTL wasnt a gimmick or anything. They did what they wanted to do - they changed their sound and style. As you pointed out with Their Law, they have always had a punk "attitude", but that flailing around/screaming/yelping on stage is what made their live show amazing.

Troof. After .... Generation, they just became another band who lost their way in the acres of $ they were bringing in and tried to make up for it by getting all shouty and writing tracks with controversial lyrics for the sake of controversial lyrics. If it wasn't for SMBU, no one here would know them at all. It was disappointing to see them at that point tbh. They were (and could still be for all I know) an absolute sledgehammer live though. Got to see them twice back when they toured .... Generation and wont forget those shows anytime soon.

The only time money ever had an influence on Liam H is when he wrote Babys Got a Temper in 2002. And he pretty much trashed it soon afterwards.

Just because the FOTL had alot mainstream success and was critically acclaimed by MTV and others doesn't mean that they were loosing their footing in the success and money they were gaining. He didn't do SMBU to be controversial and make up for it, he did it because it fucking worked out perfect as a tune - a perfect example of his sampling skills and production (his sampling skills are at his best on Experience and MFTJG though).

Liam's inspiration didn't come from money then - it came from playing live. Some of the hits from FOTL (Breathe and Firestarter) were actually written and being performed in 1995 - a good 2 years before FOTL, and while they were still touring for MFTJG.

You can call their punk act a gimmick if you want, but they had a punk attitude, and it just reflected on their music and live performance.

Hell yes... but they have been hit & miss on albums and DJ sets. When they do their full live show it's a guaranteed good time. I still spin some of their old 12"s which have good mixes on 'em.

The "High Roller" remix from the Vegas 10th anniversary bonus disc kicks ass, and I'd assume the others are pretty cool. Hmmm, methinks there's downloading afoot.
