don't know how many dates they've still got scheduled, but I saw them last night at the kool haus (about 1400 person capacity).
I actually took my 12 year old brother for his first rock concert. he loved it.
they played for 2 1/2 hours.
I won't bother with a review- it was MMJ live. as far as I know they've never had a bad night. excellent stuff, and a worthy first show for my kid brother.

so I suppose this is the thread for post-bonnaroo MMJ ramblings

I saw them for an hour and a half at Bonnaroo. Best show of the weekend for me. I kinda pussed out because of the rain and cold, but I'm seeing them again at Red Rock on August 21st.

Do you know if they played Dondante at the Kool Haus? That song gives me chills every single time I hear it.

The Black Keys are opening for them at Red Rocks. That's the only stop that they'll play. And I'm gonna be there, I can't wait.

I think all the other U.S. stops are called "An Evening with My Morning Jacket." So it's just them rocking out except for the Red Rocks show.

Holy crap...saw them in Dallas last night. They played for almost 3 hours!

I knew that they were pretty fond of covering Erykah Badu's "Tyrone", so while I was pleased that they opened the encore with it, I wasn't necessarily surprised. That changed when Ms. Badu walked out on the freakin' stage and did the song with them!

The Black Keys were good. A couple of people around me thought they were better than MMJ, which is a little ridiculous. They only played for about 45 minutes and I was expecting it to be longer. But I guess that was nice because it allowed MMJ to play for 3 fucking hours.

Should be fun for you if you're into shrooms because of the face-melting that MMJ lays on you. Just make it so you can remember the show, but you're probably a pro so you'll be fine.

not quite a pro yet, but i'm getting there. apparantly theres some shrooms with my name on it in the girl's possesion. pick-up is tomorrow! I had given up all hope today and decided to go to Plan B, which was to roll. She saved me but now I'm thinking maybe I should pop a roll with the shrooms too. this is definitely a "play it by ear" situation.

and the black keys rock my cock so hard. maybe my 3rd or 4th favorite band. i love them ever so much. im grateful to have seen them twice but i havent seen any of the "attack & release" material live. bummer but not the end of the world.

They did "Cobra" at the Dallas show. I'd never heard it before (I didn't have the EP), and looking for that song was the first thing I did the next morning. Some of the rhythms reminded me of bellydance music. :)

Yeah it's a pretty bad ass song. It was kinda like 3 songs in 1. Their "Paranoid Android" if you will. The bellydance melody was cool and Jim James is just funny/weird on stage sometimes.

Last night was one of the greatest experiences of my life. My brain is still on the floor over there. I was leaning against the stage the entire time, right in front of Jim James. I've never been that close before. The lights were stellar, their jams were epic, my shrooms were fantastic. Jim James is a fucking guitar sex god.

Did I mention how close I was? I touched his shoe! and ohhhh yeahhhh, I got Jim Jame's guitar pick too, muahaha.

I have a couple decent pictures but I cant post them now, soon enough youll see how close I really was.

After last night, I think I love Jim James as much as Jack White and Beck. Yeah, he was that good. I wish I was straight just so I can go gay for him. I want to make him eggs!

They opened with touch me...pt2 which was odd to me, I figured that was a later song. I got a picture of the setlist too, I just need to figure out how to upload these stupid pics.

What an amazing show you guys, I need to see them again. and again. and again.

afterwards I just threw money at the merch booth and got a shirt and some stickers too! Did I mention that I couldnt have been closer even if I tried? You'll see with these pics....

they didnt play all of the new album which I was expecting to hear, so there was no "two halves" or "librarian", two songs I just adore. But damn when they played highly suspicious, i wet myself a little. same goes for I'm amazed, that song is beautiful, and since I was right in front of JJ the whole time it was like he was singing to me. I swooned so many times last night

also, he dances really well too! and a couple songs he didnt play guitar it was just him dancing with his cape. oh man I love that cape

Love the review! You got sigged.

I'm surprised they didn't play Librarian, but it just doesn't matter much with them. They are just fucking on it in concert. I think you would've gone on stage and attacked Jim James if they did Librarian, though. That was one of the points of the Red Rocks show that gave me goose bumps. Other goose bump moments: the yell during "Gideon", the lyric "You had me worried!..." when it goes from soft to more intense during "Dondante" and the entire time they played "Run Thru".

And Jim James really does have a great stage presence. MMJ is truly one of the great American bands right now. I'm glad you had a similar experience to what I did. Well, minus wanting to make Jim James eggs and have his babies. :)

That's so awesome to hear. "It Beats 4 U" is one of my favorite MMJ songs.

I have to ask you how "Dondante" was. The only other person who likes MMJ as much as I do is my ex. And she hates "Dondante". She says it takes too long to get to the good shit. I told her that Jim James carries the song then it gets intense and melts your face for a bit. And the saxaphone is the perfect closer. She loves Jim James and I don't get why she can't get into that song. At Red Rocks, the crowd kept talking during the first 3 or 4 minutes. Am I the only one who likes the slow beginning to "Dondante"?

sbessiso
08-31-2008, 01:58 PM
I LOVED dondante! The thing with my show, I was never once bored, and since I was leaning on the stage the whole time I was quite comfortable. I never took my eyes off Jim James, the slow stuff was quite epic, he puts a lot of soul into it. I couldnt tell if there were people talking just because everything was SO LOUD where I was.

I love the slow beginning, and the sax was awesome. I'm PRETTY sure that was the last song they played before they left the stage for seriously like 3 minutes. But I must admit, that song is a little fuzzy for me tommyboy. I need to see them again. Like right now! ever since friday I've been having flashes of the show and their
INSANE light setup. at one point it was just all strobe lights, for what felt like forever. I dont think im ever goign to be that close to jim james again. im a man in love

I was at The Raconteurs show at Bonnaroo. I absolutely loved it and didn't mind at all that I left The Swell Season for it. Though it was one of my favorite Roo shows, I wouldn't even put it in the same class as MMJ at Red Rocks.

I do respect your opinions, sir. And I hope the combo of MMJ and Radiohead in the span of 6 days didn't ruin me for a while. But we'll see what Sigur Ros has to offer at Red Rocks. I'm guessing it'll be pretty special.

You gotta keep in mind my unhealthy love for all things Jack White. So for me to compare anything to him/them, and saying they were AS good is completely out of character for me. It's a huge step!

I regret missing them at Roo this year, but I had similar problems, first of all the raconteurs earlier in the day destroyed me, the shrooms knocked me out a tad, I drank soo much coffee but it was so wet and cold and rainy. I could only stay for a little bit, and that whole time I was laying down listening to them.

I tried to see Sigur Ros at Roo but I just wasnt in the right state of mind, and it was freaking me out a little. Theyre too hard to get into.

also, for those few times I took my eyes off of Jim James, the other guys are fucking phenomenal, I'm definetly a groupie for them all. except for the other guitar player, the blonde guy, I dont want him

Wow my first sig. I feel honored!!

You're talking to the right person because I've been on a huge MMJ kick for about the past 4 months. And I rolled solo to Red Rocks and have zero regrets. All my friends missed out on excellence.

Bonnaroo is, indeed, their home and I have a gut feeling that they'll close out the festival next year instead of Widespread Panic. Or at least they'll be asked to close it out. That would probably drive me to make the trek to Tennessee again.

The 9/21 show at the Greek is going to be epic. I'm surprised that it's not even sold out yet. Anyone who lives in LA and isn't practically broke has no reason not to go to this. I think I'm going to go sbessiso's route and eat some shrooms for this one, just to change things up a bit. I've already seen them 4 times on acid and twice rolling. Phenomenal. I saw them two years ago at Bonnaroo late night while rolling. Yeah, yeah, I know it wasn't 3 and a half hours long, it wasn't raining, and Kirk Hammet didn't join them but for me, personally, 2006's set was as good as it gets. It was much more mellow than this year's overall. Something not many people realize is that while they also sound great rocking out really hard, MMJ is at their best with the mellow stuff, especially live.

Have you guys heard their first couple albums? I highly recommend them, very raw, good stuff. They recorded them in a barn. I'm listening to Evil Urges almost non-stop, it's no Z but it's still a really good album.

I know what you mean about the mellow songs. I've always been a little iffy when it came to Golden. But it is so so good live. And I still love the first 3-4 minutes of Dondante, though a lot of people seem to disagree with me on that.

It's a shame they didn't have time to showcase their superior laid-back style at Coachella this year, and it was still daytime for fuck's sake. Something has to be done about that curfew. Coachella late nights would make me think Coachella >>>>> Bonnaroo. It's just so much more balanced and exciting with the late night shows. At Coachella you see some headliners and then that's it, you leave, the party is over. At Roo you start each day off with some lesser known bands, work you're way up to the big headliners, then after midnight, the real party starts when everyone gets really wild, crazy and fucked up and the best bands put the best shows that will one day become legendary. See Flaming Lips last year, Sigur Ros and MMJ this year.

I was never really into independent label, lesser known bands, instead I usually didn't listen to any bands until they became fairly well known. I've never been a big fan of a local band that then went on to become internationally popular, until MMJ. In 98 I was found this really good local (at the time) band so I kept going to their shows and now it's awesome watching them become so successful. I'm really glad you guys are digging them. If you don't like one of the headliners, then that really helps you save energy for the late night shows. For example, as far as 2006 and 2007 went, I'm not a really big Police fan and I'm while I enjoy some of his music, I'm not too crazy about the Tom Petty sing-a-long Extravaganza. However, I have to admit that after Radiohead and especially Tool, I was exhausted but nothing will stop me from enjoying the insanity that is Roo late night to it's fullest.

I didn't really enjoy MMJ at first anyway, they're an aquired taste* in general, but totally worth the effort. I think "Evil Urges" is a very accessible album, I've even convinced a few people to buy the album, which makes me happy.

I missed the Superjam too, late-night Friday was a failure for me, it was too cold/rainy for me, and I was soo tired, but I was a trooper you guys, I have it my all. After my raconteurs/shroom/piss my pants experience, I shouldve power napped somewhere, but blah blah coulda shoulda woulda blah blah etc etc

*speaking of aquired tastes, if only I can get into sigur ros....

Lay down with a pair of headphones and listen to "Takk...". I wasn't a believer at first either, but something inside me clicked when I heard that album in the dark with headphones on. Now I'm driving 6 hours to see them at Red Rocks.

I was a pretty big pussy during late-night festivities this year.

Friday: I only saw about 11 MMJ songs before I went back to the tent to sleep. I was cold, wet and tired. I loved the show, though, and I bought my Red Rocks tickets as soon as I got back in town.

Saturday: I really enjoyed Pearl Jam and was stoked for Sigur Ros. Then I had a little fight with my then-girlfriend. Totally ruined the mood because I was pissed. I enjoyed what I saw of Sigur Ros, but that was one of the few times I let a female put a damper on a great experience. So after about 5 songs, I just went to sleep. We made up the next morning. Go figure.

i miss bonnaroo

Dude, there's so many people at Bonnaroo, I might have seen you several times but there's no way I would have known. We'll all meet up this year. Last year was the first year I had to miss since 2003. I moved from Cincinnati to LA earlier in the year and I didn't have the money to fly to Tennesse and back after Coachella. At first I wasn't too pissed because I thought the headliners, particularly Metallica, would bring a large unwanted, douchey crowd that wouldn't mix well at all with the regulars. After hearing about the late nights this year, I wish I would have saved up and went. I'm 100% down for next year though. Bring it on Superfly, we know you're either giving us Zepplin or The Who but please get Phish to get their shit together and so they can melt our faces.

They will be a lock for Bonnaroo. I know the great majority of this board is anti-Grateful Dead but I know there's at least one deadhead here, canexplain maybe? How epic would this be: Led Zepplin, Radiohead, Grateful Dead, My Morning Jacket. Phish and the Who are stretches but those four are entirely possible at this point.

Not really into the Grateful Dead, but I'd probably check them out. Radiohead and MMJ are my 2 favorite bands, so I'm sold! Led Zeppelin would be very nice, as well.

Well, since you don't really drugs you might not be able to really relate to this experience but he sure can. The first time I heard them I was in the middle of a relatively relaxed, not so intense acid trip, I smoked about four fatties while listening to () and the new one. Their music really soothed me, it was definitely the most chilled out my brain has been while tripping in recent memory. Although it did get a little freaky at times. I guess it was just a drugged up version of what you did with the headphones.

ehh not a Dead fan, but they're Bonnaroo, I have no problem with them. I don't want Led there, I'm sorry, but give me the who and i'm a fucking THRILLED camper.

but I'm really praying to Zeus and the Gods for The cure @ Bonnaroo. One of my all-time favorite bands and i've never seen live, they were here in Miami the weekend of Bonnaroo so of course I had to miss it. can you believe I was briefly considering skipping Bonnaroo, selling my ticket and using the money to get a cure floor seat off of like ebay or something. i came to my senses, but still, that should say something, no?

the cure would be perfect for bonnaroo, if metallica played and succeeded, than robert smith and the boys can and will too. plus, Bonnaroo will give them the 2 1/2-3 hours they need/deserve

To each their own. No, I don't do drugs. But I would think Sigur Ros would be great on them. Salah, take some acid and listen to Sigur Ros. Any album will probably do, but Takk... is my favorite. I think () might be more soothing, though.

Right on, the cure would be great. If you want to try to get into GD here are some accessible songs for newbies that are less jammy:

U.S. Blues
Truckin
Touch of Grey
Stella Blue
Shakedown Street
Box of Rain
Friend of the Devil

excellent stuff but what really made me wet myself is their most recent performance on conan when they did "Touch me...pt 2". the epic slow builddup, and that fucking cape JJ loves. it was that performance that was on my mind most when waiting for my Miami Beach show to begin. I made friends with the people around me and I kept saying, "god I hope he brings his cape", haha that cape was the first thing I saw when he came out! everyone got really excited for me, and just general excitment too I guess

You're welcome. Red Rocks was really a magical night. This might sound weird, but I was unfamilair with MMJ when they announced the lineup for Bonnaroo this year. I started listening to them because they were gonna be at Roo and I wanted to get familiar with the artists I hadn't heard of. I was basically going to see Pearl Jam. Bump for the people who saw MMJ in Cali this weekend. How was everybody's experience?

Wheres the beef?

Saw them at Berkely Greek Theater. It was sprinkling enough to make the entire ground and my clothes wet to the point we almost left before the show.

The show started at 7:30 with no opening act. I joked beforehand "What? Are they going to play for 3.5 hours?" Well they fucking tried. We left early after standing for 2.5 hours. They just kept playing. How many fucking songs do they have anyways?

The crowd was shit. Totally ruined it for me. There were people all around me who were so involved in their conversations that some had their backs to the stage.

MMJ was OK. I won't see them again though. Festival? Yes. Solo? No.

Ah man that's disappointing to see. They played for 3 hours at Red Rocks and I could've handled 3 more hours. They were absolutely amazing, IMO. I guess the rain can almost ruin a show if you're not a hardcore fan.

All the conversation at the beginning of Dondante annoyed me, but the crowd was great at Red Rocks.

I saw the show Friday night and thought it was great. They came on around 8:15 or so and played until about 10:50. The mist (rain?) before MMJ sucked a little bit but it wasn't too bad. I was forced to buy a MMJ sweatshirt to keep warm because the t-shirt I was wearing got a bit damp. The crowd seemed cool to me... some talking but everyone seemed to be having a great time and there was a good vibe. Here is their setlist:

I went to the LA Greek show last night and it was a very strange experience for me. I'm a seasoned MMJ vet. I've seen them more times than any other band. Last night was my 13th MMJ show but my first on this current tour, I don't count that Coachella nonsense. They are getting much bigger/more popular now and for me it's a good and bad thing. It's bittersweet. It's cool to be able to say, "yea I used to see them all the time back when nobody knew who they were." However, it sucks because now they're only going to play bigger and bigger venues and the shows will never be as intimate as they used to be. The LA Greek isn't as bad of a venue as I expected but there was no intimacy whatsoever. The crowd was fine and I had decent seats but I felt very disconnected from the band. Having said that, they played a good set and I was surprised/impressed with the light show. They still don't have a whole lot of money so I'm glad they splurged on that. The circles of light concept was simple but it worked well, must have been awesome looking at Red Rocks.

Even though the doors opened at 7:30 I didn't think MMJ would start playing until around 8:30 or so and I hit some bad traffic so I missed the first five songs (including anytime and i'm amazed, grrr) but this was the set list.

1. Evil Urges
2. Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt.1
3. Off The Record
4. Anytime
5. I’m Amazed
6. The Way That He Sings
7. Two Halves
8. Thank You Too!
9. Sec Walkin
10. I Will Sing You Songs
11. What A Wonderful Man
12. Mahgeetah
13. Lay Low
14. Phone Went West
15. Gideon
16. Dondante
17. Librarian
18. Smokin From Shootin
19. Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt.2 - without a doubt the best song of the night, bone chilling, even the bros standing by me were saying, "Dude, these guys are sick musicians bro, fo sho that's what's up!"
———-
20. Golden
21. Wordless Chorus
22. Highly Suspicious
23. Run Thru
24. One Big Holiday

This whole tour it's been completely different than it ever has been before. I don't think it's changed at all during this tour though.

I saw them right at the beginning, and I don't remember any "circles of light"

i'm thoroughly enjoying all this MMJ love going on. This is where I was a few weeks ago. On the fucking moon. Whenever I listen to them now I get goosebumps. ESPECIALLY "touch me...pt2" and "i'm amazed"....and "highly suspicious"!

Interesting, maybe it has changed during this tour. There were five or six circular light structures that were just about a foot or two in diameter. All of the other lights were based around those circles. I'll try to find some pics. Do you have any of the show you were at?

Highly Suspicious is by far my least favorite MMJ song, but I DO respect them for trying something different, that one just doesn't work for me in any way. It came off pretty well live though, much better than I was expecting.

I like the lights. They aren't over-the-top like NIN, Muse or Daft Punk (even Radiohead), but they fit with the overall show. I do like how they go crazy during Off The Record and Lay Low.
