deadmau5 would be nice again, Richie is always good, Rabbit in the Moon, John Fleming, Dave Seaman, and, of course

APHEX TWIN

(too soon to ask for RDJ again?) :P

frozen pilgrim

never too soon for aphex. I think he really enjoyed himself, too. the video of him backstage has him grinning and drinking and chatting it up, which is very very unlike his reclusive reputation. I'd kill to see aphex twin again, but with a proper set time. an hour just wasn't enough.
also, as he isn't in this thread yet, roots manuva. I know it may not seem right having an MC in the sahara, but there have been less danceable acts, and the depth of his production demands a sound system like that.

Rabbit in the Moon to Prodigy could possibly be one of the greatest 1-2 punches ever. I'm getting excited just thinking about it. God that'd be fun.

frozen pilgrim
10-21-2008, 11:47 AM

and then one of the other nights we can have chemical brothers <> aphex twin :D

I'm not quite sure I would be able to comprehend that.

frozen pilgrim
10-21-2008, 12:03 PM
but considering aphex only got an hour at sunset, it's 100% undeniably possible. I'm having a fucking heart attack just fucking thinking about it.
oh my god.

edit:
and on friday, conflicting with some huge mainstream-ish mainstage headliner, we'll go modeselektor (since a lot of people missed him), into hallucinogen/shpongle as a b-list closer

PassiveTheory

Passive why the lack of Chemical Bros.?

In talking to our resident Chem Bros expert (Bosco) it's come to my attention that the cost of touring coupled with Chemical Ed's troubles over the last year (Lily Allen) probably mean that, if anything, the Chem Bros will only be doing UK-stuff (maybe Glasto but don't bet on it).

Let me explain my headliner choices:
- Basement Jaxx are touring for the first time in a couple of years and could jump across the pond to play Coachella
- The Prodigy has been talked as a strong possibility since last year when we got mixed confirmations as to whether or not they'd be playing
- Armin Van Buuren was recently crowned the number 1 DJ in the world, GV strives for excellence, and Coachella has seen at least one trance DJ headline a night the last few years (Tiesto, PVD, Sasha and Digweed, etc.). He's also playing Las Vegas at the end of the month.

So yeah.

About RITM, I REALLY hope they play this year, but it's all contingent on whether or not Bunny gets the surgery to repair his eye. I swear, if they ever find the motherfucker who threw that bottle, I wouldn't mind beating the shit out of him.

dont you people get tired of straight 4/4 beats?

frozen pilgrim

why yes, yes I do. that's why I asked for aphex twin, and shpongle.

dont you people get tired of straight 4/4 beats?

Sometimes I do, but I've been in the mindset of a house DJ for the last 3 weeks so I can't really think of anything else.

frozen pilgrim
10-21-2008, 12:42 PM
I've been listening to the third shpongle album quite a bit, and the second fifth or so of the album is all 7/4, but not just one 7/4 beat...
I've not a total idiot when it comes ot theory, but simon posford is up there with guys like richard d james and squarepusher in terms of sometimes making even a seasoned veteran scratch their head while dancing at the same time

PassiveTheory

Well... if Venetian Snares isn't doing anything, I'd hope he could make an appearance and perform.

orbit

why yes, yes I do. that's why I asked for aphex twin, and shpongle.

yeah, but aphex is not everything out there.

i've heard elite force played a great set a couple of weeks ago in lovefest san francisco. flying lotus is mixing the new dj kicks, tipper should've played time ago, limewax would detroy the sahara to death, squarepusher could get a great drummer and tear that tent apart. i dont get why high contrast hasnt played yet, daedelus and fennesz would be really cool. and actually, hallucinogen is touring with shpongle, arent they? well, shpongle dj set that is. it'd be nice having any of them.

the thing with venetian snares is that... he is one of those artists that would cancel his show the day before because he feels like to. well, perhaps not anymore, this last tour was pretty solid.

well, half of this is true. The whole Lily thing, is past Ed now. Touring part is, and will always be, expensive. But it also has to do with the fact that they've already DONE America. For example, when the Chemical Brothers where a younger band they toured the U.S., the same way you see that Justice is doing right now. The group (chemical brothers) aged, and their music became more detailed/diverse and has evolved from a concert to a SPECTACLE.

Disappointing!

As far as Englanders go I've only ever seen Hatcha and he was sick as fuck... I put Skream in this thread not because he's the DJ I'd like to see the most but because from a commercial standpoint he makes the most sense to appear at Coachella.

I'd rather have Caspa, Rusko, Distance, Boxcutter, Scuba, Marlowe... Skream makes great tracks but there are way better DJ's out there.

yeah. those guys are pretty good, but the thing is... they would have to play for 30-40 min, because more than 1 hour of straight dubstep at coachella would be pretty boring. you have to admit it, it sounds so much better when mixed with other styles. check tayo when started to play dubstep, or the just released freq nasty's fabric live.

battles in the sahara? no

Haha, maybe I was biased. I just really enjoyed it. Who was after him again? because at least moby wasn't as bad as the dj after him.

This is because Paul Van Dyk is a shitty trance DJ. That's the guy who followed Moby. Seeing the ends of AVH's set and BT's set plus seeing Krafty Kuts = way better than PVD.

Also, I second Orbit's suggestion of FSOL. I'm wavering in my thoughts as to whether or not they could headline the Sahara. I want to say that with the visuals and the videos I've seen before that they could, and they'd probably have the "Sahara headliner spot but not their name on the 2nd line"-type deal like Sasha and Digweed last year, but I have this nagging doubt that they'll be the 2nd to last biggest Sahara act on one of the nights.

what do you mean by headliners? closing out one of the nights? i can see them doing it in electronic festivals, but i don't know about the sahara tent. you know, i don't know how people at coachella would feel about seeing a duo performing live from their studio instead of being on stage.

wacky shit. but I'm intrigued. I bet/hope that'll make/there'll be a fantastic webcast.
you know what circumstance I could totally see that working in?

main stage, friday night, and instead of waiting 25 minutes for the mainstage EDM headliner (prodigy, daft punk, some lame ass but world famous trance DJ, etc), they make it an hour and fifteen minutes to set the stage (60 foot tall pyramid, mebbe?) and pipe in an FSOL studio performance through the sound/screens.

In Moby's case, he has a band and plays a guitar live.

Usually, the easiest explanation is that DJ-sets are people mixing records and live sets usually involve instruments or a sampler at a bare minimum.

So after poking around ze internetz I'm going to agree that the Prodigy couldn't be more primed to play in 09. They haven't played Coachella since 2005 or any US gigs since Nov. 06, and they've been sticking to festivals for the past two years. Currently, they're in a NYC studio finishing up a new album due out before Coach and have a bunch of gigs scheduled in England & Australia. Looks like a world tour is coming in the new year. And then there was the message on their board debunking a coach 08 add but saying they were "looking forward to playing Coachella 09." The stars are aligning.

I Like Deadmau5 to return in 09. He's pretty much blown up over the summer festival season. Less likely but Modeselektor would be sick again. They owned in 08.

Sahara acts looking like strong candidates for 09:

Yeah, I can't imagine getting more than two of the top few acts but after that its fair game. Paul always puts together a ridiculous lineup in the Sahara. That den of sin is what separates Coachella from the rest of the stateside festivals after all. It's got to own.

And "sick" is fantastically bro-esque but sometimes it's the most accurate word.

How are the Crystal Method strong candidates? Haven't they been inactive for 2 years?

Also, I think there's a trance DJ, Mike something, I want to say he's German. Anyway, Tiesto and PVD love this guy, apparently, so he might play.

They seem like more of a mainstage act...something like Kraftwerk's timeslot from last year.

The Crystal Method have been doing dj sets I know for sure, they dj'd at Pemberton it was really sick, I think a live set a la the coach dvd would be reeeeally sweet.

Prolly see some of the upstart live nu-rave/dancerock/dance punk/synth-pop/indietronica bands, either in Gobi or early in the day in sahara:

The Whip
Late of the Pier
Pnau
Ladyhawke
IGO
Plastic Operator
Hadouken!

older ones:
The Presets
The Faint
Klaxons
Fischerspooner
VNV Nation

Please please please:

Shinichi Osawa!!!!
Soulwax + 2manydj's
chemical brothers
the prodigy
Digitalism
Eric Prydz
Tommie Sunshine
Mat the Alien
Miami Horror
AC Slater
Harrison Schaaf
Streetlife Dj's

van she dj set (their remixes are soooo insanely good. wish I could say the same for their album.)
justice dj set
daft punk dj set (hahaha ya right)

Bring back:
Calvin Harris!!!! but in sahara this time
Simian mobile disco!!!!
Cut Copy!!!!
Booka Shade!!!!
A-trak with a longer set!!!!

I Honestly think they should expand to TWO dance tents. last year the Gobi was prolly about 40-50% dance music. Make it 100%. And move it next to the Sahara (switch with Mojave) so they don't have to close it down early for the headliners.

Wheres the beef?

I am one step ahead of you! My best friend and I were so crushed we didn't purchase Sahara shirts for '08, that we decided to make our own for '09 once the lineup comes out. I also plan on making a shirt that says "Superstar DJ's Here We Go!" in honor of the Chems, and if the Prodigy play "Death of the Prodigy Dancers" because I love the live song off Experience, and I WILL be dead after a performance by them.

I am hereby claiming one of these shirts. That sounds awesome.

Looks like I will be taking shirt sizes! Plus it will be way cheaper than the $40 they charge right? Not that I wouldn't buy one, it's just I get so excited once inside the Coachella grounds I cannot think about waiting in line for a shirt. It's straight to the Sahara!

That Royksopp video was awesome. I have never listened to them before... I need to look into them.

you should try melodie am first. it's more accesible than the understanding.

I would kill for the Sahara shirt from this year with the melting sneakers on the front. I bought it and it got stolen, and that is one of my biggest regrets from Coachella 08. Put me on the list for your 09 shirts for sure

I have one of those and it doesnt really fit me well, mens medium?

My guesses for the 3 biggest names for the Sahara, with the knowledge of The Prodigy being all but ruled out:

Basement Jaxx
The Faint
M83

My favorite Sahara picture from this year is the one where the creepy guy with dreadlocks is dangling from the rafters over a huge crowd during Hot Chip. I think it's in the "did anyone see this scary man" thread

not trying to rip on anyone, but i really don't see the faint in the sahara either. is that where they ended up last time they played at coachella? if anything they could get placed in the mojave. then again they like to bring their own visuals and the sahara is where that might work best. someone enlighten me.

Even if they're guitar driven, The Faint is thoroughly electronic and totally danceable. I see no problem with them in the Sahara.

they played outdoor theater last time but the sahara is where they belong. I'll be there, I cannot wait

JSam67

Yeah The Faint is Sahara, without a doubt. M83 on the other hand, is totally my bad. I don't know why I thought they were more dance-y, I'm admittedly not too familiar with them. I listened to a couple songs today though and fucking love them, I hope they show up in the Mojave.

So that would leave me with Basement Jaxx, The Faint, and, uh, I don't know, Chemical Brothers maybe.

I didn't mind Midnight Juggernauts. I still haven't spent that much time in the Sahara in two Coachellas. MJ, Hot Chip, Fatboy Slim, Justice last year, nobody in '07... yeah, I think that's it.

Hopefully that would change this year with Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx, The Faint.

Last year I spent pretty close to equal time in sahara on friday and saturday, but a bit more on friday (4 vs 5 shows respectively). On sunday I was only in sahara for justice, even though I think it was the best sahara lineup of all the days easily. but there were some special concerts going on that day. :-)
