curious to know who is going to Bonnaroo from the message board....

it looks like me and the wife are going!! going to now do a 3 day homework session on learning about bonnaroo and get some tips from the veterans of that festival..

the lineup and schedule is perfect for who i want to see and this will be a experience for sure cuz i have not camped in a while and we r gonna camp so its gonna be probably very irritating at times but amazing during other times so we r gonna go for it since austin city limits festival is for sure not gonna work out..... so hopefully some of u r going so i can say hi and for sure drink and take in some tennessee hospitality! :) we will be there from the 11th till the 16th going from sacramento!

I'll be going to Bonnaroo again this year. It'll be my third time, went the last two years. Driving down from syracuse, new york (between 12 and 14 hours, depending.)

Most excited about Sigur Ros late night, Pearl Jam + their inevitable guests, My Morning Jacket's cd release party, glow in the dark kanye, and whoever shows up from BSS.

Is Bonnaroo anywhere near Indianapolis? And what day is Sigur Ros playing? Just wondering if I have time to escape from a wedding....

also there are no single day tickets, so you would have to splurge for a 3 day pass

just go amy, you know you want to

TommyboyUNM
05-28-2008, 08:25 PM
I'll be there and I can't wait. There will be 3 of us driving from Albuquerque to Manchester. I'm most looking forward to Pearl Jam, Metallica and My Morning Jacket. But there are just a ridiculous amount of artists I can't wait to see.

Hey Amy. If you decide you want to go, don't buy a 4-day ticket for face value. I have an extra ticket because someone bailed. PM me or something because I'm willing to unload it at a good price. Or just email me: tommyboy115@hotmail.com

I can't wait. Just got my ticket yesterday. Rolling out of DC and picking up 13 others along the way. The only gut wrenching schedule conflict for me is !!! vs. Les Claypool. Sorry Les, if you were appearing with Primus we'd have a date but as it stands I'll be at !!!. Friday night will be sensory overload as late night MMJ should prove to be epic.

jus tsaw the cinema schedule, some real good stuff playing too

One things for sure and that is that there won't be any shortage of ways to enjoy our time there.

I'll be checking out these two events in the cinema:
2:45 PM Sunday Know Your Mushrooms - Intro and Q&A with Ron Mann
4:15 PM Sunday Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

Well, depending on what kind of spot you want for raconteurs you could catch the first few !!! songs. i think !!! starts 30 minutes before racs.

GoEastYoungMan

Yep. I'm pretty sure that is Nic Offer.

I am convinced that the members of !!! are definitely on the bus. In my mind I imagine them to be a combination of The Merry Pranksters and Dorian Greene and his friends from A Confederacy of Dunces.

GoEastYoungMan

and pardon my ignorance, but "on the bus"?

That's my biggest conflict as well. Though, Mastodon is my favorite metal band and plays around that time. I'm thinking of checkin out 30 minutes or so of Ozomatli then 30 or so of Gogol then finishing with Mastodon. Other than that, no real big conflicts. Sigur Ros vs Lupe Fiasco/Talib Kweli is there, but pretty minor. I'm start with Sigur Ros then taking it from there.

sbessiso
05-30-2008, 10:57 AM
im doing the exact same thing tommy, sigur ros onto the hip hop, it all depends on how good sigur are, i dont really mind missing lupe but id like to see talib

"On the Bus" meaning people who are in line with the traditional freak subculture. The phrase originated in The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test and referred to the bus (Further) in which the Pranksters traversed the country. My saying that they are "on the bus" means that I'm pretty sure their freak flag waves constant and hard. It pretty much means that I would love to party with them.

I am just amazed at the scheduling that Bonnaroo did this year. Thursday is the 2nd best day and it doesn't get going til like 6 or 7. This Tent all night into Lez Zeppelin. Awesome. Friday looks amazingly strong going Raconteurs, Chris Rock, Metallica, MMJ, Tiesto but the rest of the stages and tents are pretty weak. Saturday is just one big wait for Kanye and Pearl Jam and Sunday has nothing but Rogue Wave.

Glad I chose Glastonbury instead.

Alright thats retarded, I hope you didnt type all that.
Anyways, back to the Bonaroo part of this thread.

Me and four friends are leaving from Fort Worth next Wednesday. There are way too many bands I want to see this year, and there are numerous conflicts.
I think I might be late to Sigur Ros to catch all of The Coup, they were the best hiphop show I have ever seen last year at Coachella. Completely underrated.

Someone mentioned the mosh pits for Metallica, in general, everyone is way to fucked up to even consider moshing. that could lead to a bad trip. Tool was pretty intense last year with Tom Morellos solo for Lateralus, i expect Metallica to be just the same.

This will be my second time at bonnaroo, and i am completely ready.
THe late night sets make it better than any other USA festival. Period.

rideincircles, I was there last year but stayed very far away from Tool, I did hear how intense it was in there, which is why i'm kinda scared i'm gunna get killed at metallica. thoughts?

What are people talking about with intensity at Tool last year? I was there, in the pit, and absolutely nothing happened other than total rapture from a bunch of stoned dudes.

In the last two years, never once seen anything resembling any kind of moshing...except for one kid at the hold steady who looked like he needed some ritalin.

to feel inspired, to fathom the power,
to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain,
to swing on the spiral

first of all, of COURSE i'm going to be at Marley, I can never say No to a Marley of any kind, and second of all, he's on right before the raconteurs, I need to secure the best spot possible

the rumored superjam is les claypool, eugene hutz of gogol bordello and i think the guy from metallica

Even though the schedule says bands go until 4 am, that's not actually true. They often go longer than that...

Last year sasha and digweed went until after sunrise, which at least one group has done for the past couple years. Tiesto seems like a good choice for that this year, and maybe Ghostland.

Tom Morellos solo from my perspective. It was insane.
W_3lXTURsaA

If you watch other peoples videos you can see where he played with his mouth and answered a phone call during the solo. I know I will never see anything like that again. And it yes it was almost too intense with the lasers, it felt like I was in another dimension.

This year I am thinking Saturday might be my crazy party day for Sigur Ros, but anything and everything can happen at Bonnaroo. So I am not making any plans other than the bands i want to see.

For anyone going, do prepare for mud, the weather forecast looks rainy on the 7 day outlook. Be sure to check out inforoo if you havent yet. All your Bonnaroo questions will be answered there.

Well, MIA cancelled...

"I'm canceling because I feel like physically I just have to stop for a second. It's too insane," M.I.A. told NYMag.com. "I was losing a sense of just, like, reality, you know what I mean? I think for an artist like me, it's so important for me to be in the streets and go to the same shop every day and see the same people and, like, communicate. And it's really difficult to do that when you're in the city every day for 24 hours. Like, I love connecting with my band, but I want to actually help them and be a part of peoples' lives. Which is really hard when you're on tour...It takes a lot out of you, physically. I make club music, which means I'm clubbing every night for, like, six months. Know what I mean? So now and again you finally just want to be gardening and get your nails done or something like that."

Although M.I.A.'s label can't confirm anything at the moment, it seems that all of her European festival dates in June and July, as well as her set at Bonnaroo on Friday, have been called off. (An email to Bonnaroo's publicist has not yet been answered.) According to NYMag.com, she called her June 6 show at Brooklyn's McCarren Park Pool her "last show."

she sounds, like, super eloquent btw...

fuck!! they're expecting rain?? fuuuuuck!

Good luck on the weather (and who doesn’t believe in climate change eh) anyway this was waka last week …. I don’t mind some rain, but on Thursday night they closed the gates to people coming in and said it was too dangerous to come in, to go into town or get to a shelter, and they never told us people that were already in that was going on …. Had winds of 70mph, and monsoons … they stopped the music at around 700pm and it was suppose to go till 600am … on Sunday they closed down all the stages except the main tent at around 5 or 6 and then stopped the tent shows at 1100pm … that meant they just shined on Emmy Lou Harris , Mickey Hart, and zapa plays zapa .. I was pissed … plus I slept out side all 4 nights (under a shade canopy) and each morning when I woke up, there was about 3 inches of water all over my floor tarp … day in a life …. Here are two waka pics … x****

In my best Artie Lang voice....

WAH I can't handle being a rock star....WAAAAHH WAHHH it's to difficult ....

lol btw, that doesn't sound eloquent, it sounds like she's on the verge of a nervous breakdown. It's good she's stopping but I have no sympathy for a whining artist. Even when she performs her shows are either shit, mass chaos or stopped. She needs to get a fucking grip. She's way over rated and obviously can't handle being an artist. lol

metallica was my first big concert when i was younger, '94 if memory serves, and hearing the opening notes of "ecstasy of gold" still gives me shivers. we had 12th row seats and kirk hammett, my guitar god at the time and for years to come, made eye contact with me numerous times that night, i even caught one of his picks at the end of the show. that night was the moment i fell in love with live music.

Just got back, the number of really good sets I saw this year was lower than in years past (maybe 10) but the number of fantastic sets was through the roof. Best sets were My Morning Jacket who actually played four hours, not three, Sigur Ros late night, Pearl Jam's crazy setlist, Broken Social Scene, and Ranconteurs.

You're right. If Metallica was booked to headline a night of Coachella, you would never heard the end of it of how big a mistake it is, until of course after the festival when everyone creams themselves over how awesome it was to hear Ride the Lightning, One, Creeping Death, and Seek and Destroy under the Coachella sky. It's always the same routine.

Well PJ really didn't have the best experience last time they played the polo fields....

Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
notes: This show, originally planned for the LA area, was problematic with respect to parking and cold temperatures. The unruly crowd was moshing in line during the soundcheck and to PA music! Before PJ started, a roadie sang a hysterical rendition of 'Copa Cabana.' The audience is launching shoes at the stage even before and during the opening acts. In fact, during Eleven's set, a shoe hits Jack Iron's bass drum, he stops the song and says that if he finds out who threw it he would make him pay for the damages (quite pissed). Finally, PJ hits the stage, with the audience behaving outrageously. Prior to 'Deep,' Ed remarks, "Kill your local rapist, but torture him first, then serve him to your enemy for dinner." Later: "The first guy I met today gave me this book and asked if I wanted to know the secret for living forever." Tossing it into the crowd, he says, "Why the fuck would I want to live forever?" During 'Porch,' Ed invites the audience to spit at him. The agitated crowd, continuing to throw stuff onto the stage, leads Ed to comment that "... me and Jeff are going to the front gate and when you exit, we are going to beat the shit out of every barefoot person here" and "... throw a gun so I can shoot you." The band eventually plays from behind their amps so they won't be hit by the flying shoes. This audience was awful. The recording of 'Blood' from this show is released on the 'Daughter' single. 'Fuck Me in the Brain' was released later on the third fan club single (as 'Ramblings'). The guys deserve a medal for playing this long and this well despite the rowdy crowd.

ok, well here is my long ass review:

gonna break it down in parts. basically went from sacramento to bonnaroo so it was a experience and a half!!

going the day of bonnaroo:

best thing to do is stay in murfreesboro the night before bonnaroo starts. its 30 miles from the site.lots of cheap hotels right off the highway. plus there is a wal mart superstore and target and lots of food places (the waffle house there is a huge attraction and the cracker barrel if u want to a tourist and also get some good tennessee food). also, all the people were incredibly nice!! everywhere we went they were so respectful and polite so it felt good to get that hometown feel and they made us feel very welcome!! rating:A+++

we left for bonnaroo at 9am thursday and once we got to the area it took us about 2 hrs to get in. we were expecting 4-8 hrs so it went fairly smoothly. everyone in the line was super cool. we were on a side road so the locals were out selling otter pops and sodas so we grabbed a few otter pops for a couple of bucks! once we got to the entrance they check the entire car….. once u pass that u go to the ticket area where they give u a wristband u have to wear for the whole festival…. they give u trash bags, a small compact fat book with the schedule and bios on all the bands. then they guide you to where you camp. it took us about 1 hr to set up our site and by then u will be sweating like a pig! but u r excited so its with it.

thursday-sunday.: ok we have heard that the walk could be anywhere from 2 min to a hour to get to centeroo(where the stages and everything else is.) honestly we were pretty far away and the walk was 20 25 min at the max! maybe cuz im used to that walk going into coachella we were fine with it. also if you get tired they have festaxis that will take you to the site for 5.00 a person.. so we used that when the beer was going too good! :) if you are in the back you will pass shakedown st which is basically where you can get your bongs, weed, or whatever u r into. look for codewords and ive been sworn to secrecy not to use them so if u go, best bet is to do trading like beers for whatever! :)

the setup: the setup we also heard is its bigger than coachella and its not!! in fact if felt very compact…. the walk from one stage to the other was minimal. yes there is some bleeding of sound, but u get used to it so its fine.

there is so much going on its just overwhelming and beautiful. beers were 6.00 and no limit!! comedy tent and cinema tents are are full of a/c. its just a massive carnival and the main focus is the music..

the vibe:
vibe was excellent. everyone is in the same boat so you help each other out when u can. people respect your stuff(at least where we were). people from georgia, new york, canada, alabama, tn, texas, etc, etc. lots of different folks but all humble and nice.. one big party but laid back.

the food: lots of cajun food. tried some gator tail and it wasnt bad. louisiana rice and beans and jumbolaya was fantastic! just tons of food. margaritas were good as well.

the extra stuff: lots of tents with guitar hero, silent disco, there was the mechanical bull at the fuse barn, a post office where you can send postcards!!, again, just so much!!!!!

the music: everyone has their own preference and there was again every type of music to see.. grupo fantasma, ozomatli, the raconteurs, plant and krauss, stephen marley, gogol bordello, grand ole party, were awesome.. !!! kicked ass as usual. metallica and pearl jam were gracious headliners, chris rock is still the funniest mutha fucker out there! amazing how 40,000 people were quiet and respectful listening to his set... excellent..

only artist who fucked up was Kanye. here is my perspective of it:

throught the days before he came on, alot of people were looking forward to his set... they were moving around their schedule and their napping plans to go check him out... we got out to the main stage at 230am and was ready to go. huge crowd was out there ready to see what he was made of.. they then moved it back to 245am... ok everyone is ok with that.... but one it got to 330am the vibe changed.... there was booing... no explanation.... nothing.... then around 4am the background music stopped and it looked like he was gonna play.... nothing. finally around 420am he started up... there were more people who saw grand ole party thursday at 715 at a small tent then who watched Kanye!! now we stayed cuz i was high on redbulls and beer and i enjoyed the music and we danced and the setup was just ok and it was only a 50 min set and he stuck to his character, never said sorry, never said thank you..etc.... he could of handled it better as a artist who could feel the vibe but he didnt.... so obviously everyone will speculate he didnt give a fuck about the bonnaroo and the people didnt care for him... and that was clearly evident on sunday...

people had "FUCK KANYE" written on their backs, on homemade shirts, on the grafitti walls.. etc etc... it felt like every band we saw brought it up and the boos were loud and chants of "fuck Kanye" were everywhere... so bottom line, he was the only negative of bonnaroo.....

after sunday night people start to file out and the best bet is to leave around 11pm sunday and go crash at a hotel in mursfreesboro....

my coachella people, i refuse to say bonnaroo is better but it is different and i do reccommend it 100 percent! it was fucking fantastic and i give them alot of credit for hitting a home run this year!! we r planning to go again...

thank you BONNAROO!!

Hi,

I decided to go to Bonnaroo in last minutes, and I came back to California last night. It was very fun experience.

Did anybody see Newton Faulkner and Jake Shimabukuro? They are two I discovered in this festival, and they blew me away. I enjoyed them most.

I saw MGMT, Battles (got signing), vampire weekend, Gogol, Jose Gonzales, swell season, !!!, MIA, Racounteurs, Sigur Ros, Money Mark, Broken Social Scene (twice),Adele, iron and wine, cat power, etc.... I have seen more, but I cant remember now. I also went to see comedy show, I saw Zach one

Newton Faulkner and Jose Gonzales both played teardrops cover , unfortunately I missed Newton one. I heard their covers were different, but good. Newton also covered Bohemian rhapsody . That was awesome.

I was not thinking to see Jake Shimabukuro, but he is famous in Japan, and Death cab for cutie was boring so, I went to check him out. He was ukulee version of Rodrigo y Gabriela. Everybody who was there were so amused by him. He stayed more than one hour and he did signing and pictures and hugged each one of us who wanted to talk to him.
He will play some other festival in states, too. so check him out.

Most things have been mentioned bout Bonnaroo in this thread except for the fact that My Morning Jackets set at Bonnaroo was the best thing at Bonnaroo all weekend. Maybe the best show ever played on earth, it was that good.
The only rain that happened that weekend started during MMJS's set and it was almost like it was programmed to rain hard when they were ripping solos apart. They had a huge glowstick war at the beginning of their set, they played 35 songs in two halves. Kirk Hammett came out and played One Big Holiday when it was pouring rain. They got soaked we got soaked, it was the best show I have ever seen and will ever see. Nothing even comes remotely close.
I watched the whole show, and was on the rail up front for 3 hours of it, afterwards I snuck backstage and gave Jim James a hi 5 and told him the set was Fucking awesome. Best Show Ever.
