neh i wasn't in SF then. But it's so awsome that they are going to have so many musicians there that they are declaring themselves their own little festival. i wonder if the openers are going to come in and be a part of Thievery's set. Bebel doing vocals to some Thievery Corp songs would be awesome. I've heard a lot of good things about Federico Aubele but haven't listened to him too much.

This is really interesting. I am going to be in New Braunfels, TX on July 19th to see Ghostland Observatory at the Whitewater Amphitheater. They haven't had this show schedule for the next day, but I was talking to Thomas and Aaron after their show as Sasquatch and they mentioned another show in LA in July. This must be it.

Will I be able to make it back to LA to see them? If they are playing during the day it might not even be worth it.

there's no reason for this to be held at shoreline any more. if it was all being done in the parking lot then there was never any reason for it -- but now even less so.

move it to a better venue, perhaps somewhere actually in san francisco since that is how they have billed it, and for $20 it'd be a good day out.

That's pretty lame, fortunately I wasn't really that interested in seeing either "headliner" (not that either of them is a headliner). $21 including Ticketmaster fees is not a bad price to see Yeasayer, M83, the Whigs, Mates of State, Datarock, Flosstradamus, Cut Copy, Tapes n Tapes etc. To see them individually would end up costing me at least $100.

move it to a better venue, perhaps somewhere actually in san francisco since that is how they have billed it, and for $20 it'd be a good day out.

I wish they'd do that - even having it at the pier like Warped, would be fine.

I'm interested to see how a mini festival like this gets run - two stages I'm sure, but where will the second be? It's a single building (that I've admittedly never been in nor seen). Also, this will be my first LA concert since moving in

I may be burning mine Sir Boourns. I shall know for sure in the next week or so.

Does anyone know how this is going to work? One rotating stage? How long are the sets for each act? I'm so excited to see Gang of Four. Finally.

suprefan
07-03-2008, 11:25 PM
Too many acts to do rotating stage, if they did, half of the acts would get 20 mins, and they would have to start at like noon to get all of them in.

apostle2
07-03-2008, 11:25 PM
I am trying to figure out the stages too. It says that music starts at 2 and ends at like 11:30, so they definitely have to have at least two stages. With 21 listed bands and less than 10 hours to use, I would guess short sets on two stages, with it pretty much being split into a stage for the bottom half of the lineup and a stage for the top half.

As long as I can see decently long sets from Tapes N Tapes, M83, Ghostland, Yeasayer, Gang of Four, and JAMC I will be pleased

devachan
07-03-2008, 11:31 PM
But is this venue set up for two stages? The last show I saw there had a rotating stage and it worked quite well (KCRW-Evening Eclectic). It would seem much more time efficient than setting up like a normal show. We'll see...hopefully someone has some official info coming soon.

Ardentbiscuit
07-04-2008, 09:35 AM
Maybe they will have a tiny second stage set up in that outside area where KROQ and other people usually set up booths, video game demos, VIP lounges and stuff like that.

chiapet
07-04-2008, 10:30 AM
So are we thinking that they won't use the amphitheatre (like for BFD this year)? I thought Download usually used it for the main stage. The set up for BFD would work fine (a main stage and a tent).

Ardentbiscuit
07-04-2008, 10:33 AM
They are using the stage at the Gibson because the tickets are being sold in GA blocks, GA Pit, GA orchestra, etc.

I just think they will have a second stage out front of the venue because they have that long path to the venue and then when you get there they have that outside area where KROQ sets up booths, KCRW had their VIP ticket holder party tent, they had a guitar hero competition, etc. So they have room for a second small stage out there.

Edit.

As for Mountain View, I am sure they will do it like they did in previous years. Use the main stage and have one small stage in the area around the venue. I went the first year and they had a stage out there, myspace flop out area, game tap lounge, etc.

suprefan
07-04-2008, 10:38 AM
All tickets are GA for this show, no labeling makes then any different from the rest, unless you are right and it does matter, some kids are in for it when they get there. Right now ''Pit GA'' is up, but originally they had Orchestra GA up...

Ardentbiscuit

It probably doesn't matter which section your tickets are in, maybe it is just livenation's way of keeping track of it, but then why bother putting anything on there at all? Just say general admission.

I see the Mezzanine is having an after party for the SF one.

just for the record, i haven't the slightest idea how the ticketing works for the l.a. show...i tried to find out and got conflicting info all the way around.

live nation shows 4 reserved sections
http://www.livenation.com/event/getEvent/eventId/329498/

gibson box office said it's all GA, the first time they've ever done that.

ticketmaster told me it was GA within each section (i didn't call back and check the story with someone else)

i emailed live nation quite a while ago, but never got a reply.

complete GA is the only way that makes any sense. It's a drag that clear channel wasn't very clear about it....but then again, they fucked up their headliners...so this doesn't exactly shock me.

i guess we'll see come showtime

Ardentbiscuit

Hmm, obviously they don't know and whoever knows didn't bother to give everyone the information.

That is officially annoying on livenation's part.

Well considering that they're now selling Loge GA.. I think that the earlier reasoning that it's GA by section prevails.

ok, your guess is good as mine as to what happened in the last few days.

the info page for l.a. (http://www.livenation.com/event/getEvent/eventId/329498/) on livenation.com that showed 4 reserved levels @ $37.50 just changed to this:

* GA Pit: $37.50
* General Admission 1: $37.50
* General Admission 2: $19.75
* General Admission 3: $19.75
* 4 pack general admission: $15.00

that looks more like it is gonna be GA within each section as opposed to the whole house being GA.

fuck, they're certainly not making this easy.

Not when they woudl have gaurds there by each section that will check tickets you cant... Im sure they will be smart and do like a wristband system. so each color corresponds to where you can go.

Besides JAMC, Gang of Four, RJD2, Datarock, The Whigs, M83, and Cut Copy, I'm ALSO now interested in catching The Duke Spirit, Yeasayer, Vedera and De Novo Dahl, as well as the Comedy Tent.

The San Francisco lineup with the $20 ticket price is a killer bargain. I'll be there..

If they really pull of what we've been surmising and drop the bottom third of the lineup on a stage outside, and then have the top two thirds on the rotating stage, then I would actually rather have the first section of seating I think. If I am just going to be hanging out in one place all day, I want to sit.

yesterday was great. it's a very decent set of bands, all but one. (at least on the main stage... didn't check out the other stage). cut copy owned the place. I enjoyed most of the other bands too, but when brand new played they almost drove me out. I spent the last 40 minutes of their set wandering around the venue looking desperately for some kind of escape. I seriously considered leaving, but I'm glad I didn't. JAMC were fucking awesome. well worth the wait.

the venue was ridiculously empty though. at the busiest (brand new, sadly... tons of high school kids) the first section of seats was near full. the second section of seats and lawn were basically empty. after that hormonal explosion of a band finished there was an exodus of teenagers, making it easy to get a great spot for gang of four and JAMC. still, it was so sad that all these bands were basically playing to an empty amphitheater. I wish they'd used a smaller venue.

Wheres the beef?
07-20-2008, 12:32 PM
I had a great time. The ticket price was just right for me to cruise over on a whim.

Datarock, M83, and Cut Copy fucking ruled. Cut Copy especially was very very good.

The rotating stage was pretty neat as well. There wasn't any downtime which I liked but after about an hour and a half my ears needed a break.

The comedy club thing was a bust. We kept going over expecting something to be going on but I think all the comics bailed on the 745 show.

Waaaaaay too many teenagers. I can't remember how many sweatshirts I saw with '07 written on them. I was also disappointed with the lack of drug use at the show.

Brand New was just terrible. I had to bail on that. It was like: quiet, quiet, quiet, quiet, SCREAM SCREAM SCREAM SCREAM!

Oh and shoreline was so empty. I think there was probably 2k people there (if that).

Agreed on that, it was the good with the bad. I had an awesome spot for Gang of Four and JAMC but he crowd was pretty small and subdued most of the day.. Overall, I had a pretty fun time yesterday.

Just a few quick points:

- Yeah, Cut Copy had the crowd riled up the loudest the entire festival.

- I really enjoyed Gang Of Four's performance, entirely exceeded my expectations. I even preferred theirs to JAMC last night.

- Datarock were fun, I'm glad I had this second chance on seeing them after Coach.

- Yeasayer were the biggest surprise for me on the day, I love their sound on stage

- I caught 4 acts on the second stage and The Parlor Mob were the best of those by far.

- M83 and Mates of State were also solid. RJD2 was pretty chill but impressive. The Comedy Tent was a good timekiller. $15 parking and $12 beers were fucked. Tapes N Tapes sucked..

What a small crowd for the L.A. Download fest. I think the highlight of the night had to be M83. I guess, though, seeing Ghostland Observatory for the first time made me a fan of their music and as much as I don't really care for the lead singer's voice, the style was awesome. We got there in time to catch Datarock and that is always a plus. This was one festival that didn't really have much going on for it in a sense of camaraderie, but something that could be a hit in the future. The rotating stage was really on point and time wasn't wasted setting up.

I guess the biggest disappointment was not being able to catch Atmosphere and Brother Ali. However, there was fun to be had and perhaps the greatest moment was finally winning a towel (after 4 tries) attempting the taurag toss...lol.

YES

That was at once my weirdest and most bad ass concert moment this year. Did you see when the shrapnel flew off and the kid in the front row had to duck out of the way?

They beat the shit out of a microwave every time they play.
I have the one they destroyed at the House of Blues Anaheim show from 2005.

yeah, I was in the ORCH about two rows back in the middle. I pointed it out to my brother. Anyone know why they do that?

I think they said they wanted to get the sound right, and that's what they intended to have on the recording as well, so might as well go for broke.

cool, seriously Gang of four are fucking awesome live. I mean the records go without saying, seeing as how influencial they are, but live they are something special. Great musicians, great music, great time. Gang of Four completely upstaged JAMC in LA for the record. JAMC did a good job, but following up Gang of Four last night was not fair.

not to mention everyone else that played(except for the night marchers, and brand new) Caribou also because they weren't good.

I wanted either a Ghostland or M83 shirts and neither were there. I was a bit disappointed, but that's okay--it saved me some money for my upcoming shows. Anyhow, interesting concept and really cool that it wasn't at all packed. I moved up and down the ORCH area without worrying about anything. I don't imagine it being that way next year provided they'll have it again.

I think financially they broke even, or lost very little. The thing is now there is a buzz on this fest in LA, because everyone I spoke to had nothing but good things to say. It was chill, and there was good music going on most of the day. Once I didn't see any of the band shirts I wanted I started spending on drinks, so there's that. OH, Gibson Amp is very nice, I liked it very much, sound is great.

I was pretty tame yesterday as I move forward in my personal goal to cutback on drinking. Did you manage to win a towel? That was pretty fun and kinda annoying at the same time. It became a quest not to win the towel, but to simply put the ball through the damn sunroof.

Sushov23

Unfortunately, we left before that because of the early workday this morning. We left after Mutemath to grab some dinner and head on out. If it were on a Saturday as opposed to a Sunday, we would've stayed to the end. I'm sure we'll be seeing alot of these bands in the near future. Has Ghostland played Coachella yet?

I'm not a huge fan of JAMC, so it wasn't a huge miss for me. Gang of Four was one act I will catch at another time. It was a longggggggggg weekend, so it began to wear us down. M83, Ghostland, and Datarock were our targeted acts.

I've missed datarock 4 times already, once in SD, and once in LA, at coachella I saw the verve over them, and now yesterday. So it needs to happen soon. They should open for The Presets, and cut copy. Cause I have also missed them a few times.

I missed them @ Coachella for the same reason as you--couldn't miss The Verve because they were huge for me growing up in the 90's. I missed Cut Copy for the most part @ Coachella, so they're one I need to catch too.

I'm def going to detour. I will also probably go to the glasshouse show, because there is no such thing as too much presets, and cut copy. I missed Cut copy at coachella for the breeders. I had a feeling I was going to get a second chance. There is my second chance.

I feel bad for all the people that left before RJD2, his set was killer. It was cool that as soon as he asked for a round of applause for the crew the security guys all just abandoned their posts and everyone went down in the pit. I stayed in the orchestra seats; I wanted to watch the screens...

yeah it was great to be in the pit for RJD2, I had been wanting to catch him do his thing for a while. RJD2 is a genius, glad I got to meet him yesterday, he is very humble. RJD2 creates a symphony with his equipment it was beautiful.

It was a fun show...I went to see Dark Knight at the city walk and then jetted over to the show to catch the start of Tapes N Tapes. Too bad I missed Datarock but I've seen them before.

I will agree M83 was fantastic...

Something I discovered by accident trying to fit Dark Knight and download in together into one day. Movies on the City Walk Friday, Saturday and Sunday before Noon are 6 dollars....great deal!

Not a bad day for you, Ardent. One of the few non-Coachella events in which we actually made it pretty much on time for the bands we wanted to see. I think that's pretty good being that it fell on a Sunday.

When I go to events where the attendance is low it's a happy/sad moment for me. Happy that I don't have to fight with crowds in and out. I get great position from the stage.

Sad because I wish more people were there....

Yeah, that's how I felt yesterday. It was almost bittersweet since I didn't really have to worry about walking through a million people to get into the venue or get something to drink. Anyhow, I'm sure it won't be like that for long.

07-21-2008, 09:56 PM
It was really odd, not only because there were fewer people than I expected, but also because of the ridiculous size of the venue compared to the attendance. I remember looking around multiple and never thinking it looked anywhere near full. I felt bad for all the bands pretty much up until ghostland because of what they must've seen from the stage as a disappointment.

Also, the worst thing about the show - the 16 year old girls and their boyfriends wearing their jeans who actually got mad at me for playing yahtzee on my phone through brand new...

I did notice lots of people left after them.

At the point the place was REALLY empty.
