View Full Version : coachella ASSumptions

what assumptions did you have about the overall coachella experience that were proven wrong when you got there?

in 2004, i had assumed that our friends would be able to buy my saturday ticket and just leave it on the tire of their car or something till i got there and could pick it up. they told me that wasn't a good idea and had me meet them at the gate instead. it wasn't until i saw the size of the parking lot that i realized how impossible that would have been.

i also assumed the bravery would be worth watching in either 2005 or 2006... boy was i wrong!

YOUR TURN :)

I assumed the tickets would print out the morning I drove down with kingsblend... Fuck ticketmaster (but thank god for my friend Matt).

Assuming I'd wake up around 7 or 8 and be packed before 10... not wake up at 10 and leave around 11:30. Yeah...

Assuming that not everyone would know who Amy Winehouse was (in 2007). Should have gone to the Gobi earlier. Much earlier.

(2007 again) Assuming Air would only be 15 minutes late. Then 20. Then only 30. Then feeling like crying.

I mistakenly assumed the festival site would be larger. I was pleased to find it wasn't a terribly long walk between stages, and just as pleased to learn as long as I was actually in front of a stage the sound didn't bleed in from elsewhere.

in 2004 i thought....

-that i would be able to sit at the main stage and relax at the end of the day and be able to see. yeah, i didn't take into consideration just how many people would be at the event and they can walk all over the place and even step on you.

-that the weather wouldn't be too hot. (i was a tad miserable with the heat but my love of music kept me going)

-that it was going to be in the middle of nowhere miles away from civilization. (i was soooooo thrilled when i saw it wasn't).

I thought Kingsblend would be a 22 year old fat doofus.

(He's closer to 30 is the mistake, if you're wondering)

I assumed Daft Punk wasn't going to be that huge of a draw...

I also assumed the spotlights didn't move....

Nor the Kraftwerk robots...

Or that it would get THAT cold at night...

'06 was my first year. I really don't camp any other time of the year, so when I campoed at Coachella, I was fearing a lot of things. The dirtiness of it all, not being able to sleep, being anti-social, etc etc etc... Now I genuinely look forward to camping as much as the fest itself.

I assumed that this year the tent would be as big as it was in '06... I was touiting it to a few friends that hadn't attended before. It seemed endless in '06 (why I started a thread about it), but this year it filled for a lot of acts and seemed smaller.

general assumption: I assumed Coachella would be back in October 2000, but it came back in April 2001 (right?).

I was one of those 10%. I wasn't gonna lug a tent all the way from Minneapolis (since I was flying), and I wasn't gonna lug that piece-of-shit orange tent home either, so I donated it to my neightobrs who wanted it. I'll probably buy the same tent again next year lol.

Except for the fact that two single campers were assigned a 7' x 14' spot, effectively giving them 7' x 7', not 8' x 8'.

And that you aren't given extra space in a square. What good does it do to have a tent thats bigger than 8' x 8' for more than one person if you're moving into your neighbor's spot? Luckily nobody really gives a shit, its just kind of embarrassing/awkward having to crowd somebody else.

Smaller tent next year. Much.

Prior to 2004 I thought Coachella was just a festival of music I wouldn't get into because it wasn't Rock 'n' Roll, or Metal. I've gone every year since and now most of my CD collection is a dust coated archive of classic rock groups because I'm working on my new selection of Electronic/Techno/Dance. http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w18/1BROKENDOLL/392022_170x170.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w18/1BROKENDOLL/justaftervb3-1.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w18/1BROKENDOLL/fatboy.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w18/1BROKENDOLL/daftpunk.jpg

exactly. i instructed my neighbor (whynotsmile) to point the door of his tent toward the empty half of my 7 x 14 so that he could get out of his tent. i used the empty spot next to his tent for sitting.

I assumed there would be some really good veg. food, which there wasn't (unless i missed it?).
I assumed, being that they've done this a few times before, the entrance to the campground would be organized and not the shit show that it ended up being.

After I went, I ASSumed I would bring tons of friends from Chicago to Coachella. Every year I tell my self I need to get a larger and larger group of people to go.

Long story short, we never get that large of a group from Chicago. Out of the past 6 years, the largest group we brought was 6 people.
