she was the opening act for the National sometime ago - told the audience a few times that it was her birthday and she had turned sixteen. probably joking but it didn't come across that way, especially since she's so youthful looking. i spent the entire time thinking, "woah, she's a child prodigy."

over rated: The Cure

The Cure are overrated on studio recordings and underrated as a live act.

I rarely pull out any albums except maybe Pornography or one of the singles collections, but they are my favorite live act...period. Their Curiosa show remains the best set I've ever seen, and that was at the end of a long evening of great shows. (Mogwai, CTC, The Rapture, & Interpol before they got too annoying.)

Seeing them in a few weeks at The Dodge, we'll see if they've worn out their welcome in the past few years.

Yeah I always imagined I might be more into Bjork if I ever saw her live. My girlfriend HATES Muse and I told her that I bet she would still have fun at their show.

And I want to add a group I think is overrated, though the same "see them live" argument could be made. Kraftwerk. I know they're pioneers for the genre, and without them there might not be the incredible Daft Punk show I saw last year, but I cannot get into their music at all. The visuals look pretty cool on stage, but their music irritates me. To each his own I guess.

The Smiths are nothing. Zero. Nada. Zilch. They could't rock out, they couldn't write a decent ballad, all they could do was weep and moan. The music was nothing special, not particularly emotive or clever or interesting. They did have some decent melodies, to which I give Johnny Marr credit, but otherwise, their whole schtick makes me want to put them against the wall with a blindfold and a cigarette.

but aphex twin, yeah, not my genre, but clearly his synapses connect.

Aside from the Garden State-listening crowd these guys are constantly ignored in face of Portishead, Massive Attack and even Tricky despite starting the careers of numerous indie darlings (Jose Gonzales and Sia to name a pair). I disagree, they deserve all the credit they get. I want to say Nirvana > Radiohead but after thinking about, Nirvana = Radiohead. RH has more talented musicians but I hear much more passion and energy in Kurt's voice than Thom's. Nirvana was better than all of those early 90's bands besides maybe Smashing Pumpkins and Tool. The Pixies were better though and Nirvana wouldn't have been much without them, The Melvins, Sonic Youth and other direct influences so give credit where credit is due. I'd say they're correctly rated. Or appropriately-rated. I also think there is some other "downtempo" music (although I don't really care for the nomenclature) that is appropriately-rated. To be perfectly clear, I agree with liquor's notion that Air isn't overrated, but that Groove Armada aren't really in my sphere of thought when it comes to overrated because they aren't downtempo to me.

well, you know, groove armada are not all about superstylin'. they have some downtempo songs too.

i think most "downtempo" music as you call it, it's appropiately rated. actually, some people could say zero 7 is kind of overrated downtempo.

I'm not a huge fan of Albert Hammond Jr's solo work. Not in a negative way, mind you.

Also, I'm going to throw Datarock into the underrated catagory.

Sigh. I do like vanilla wafers:

Overrated (cont.):

Tom's recommendations of sweets and goodies
Tom's palate
Tom listening to music in a restaurant and using it as an example for why he doesn't like a song, but then thinking by calling it out as a cheap example it will nullify the fact that he even had the gall to make it.

Underrated:

Tom getting a beatdown from 80 Mexican teenagers from the LA area with their hair slicked back like Morrissey.

This little ditty cleared all of the phlegm in my throat. Priceless.
