View Full Version : dan le sac vs. Scroobius Pip - Angles

PassiveTheory

So, this leaked, and basically, just upon first listen, it is really really good. All 3 of the well-known singles ("The Beat That My Heart Skipped", "Letter From God to Man", "Thou Shalt Always Kill") are featured on the record, but of the non-single stuff I'd say that "Fixed", "Angles", "Magician's Assistant" and the nearly 12-minute long "Waiting for the Beat To Kick In" stand out as the stellar tracks. The only two tracks I'm not warm on are "Rappers Battle" and "Back From Hell", especially the latter... It's just too aggro and I didn't like it. Scroob's lyrics just snake through dan's beats on every single song and there really isn't a significant weak point on the record.

Can't wait for Pitchfork's 6.2 review of the disc, though...

WHAT? when is this record supposed to come out? I need this, anyway to get it through a mega upload, or something. Torrents don't cooperate.

PassiveTheory

I got it through megaupload. Search for the album + "megaupload" on google and it should come up. If you have no luck, lemme know and I'll upload it myself.

Letter from god to man is fucking RIDICULOUS on the album, I like all the elements added to the song. OH SHIT, mind blowing.

My only beef with the album upon numerous listens is that the phrase "the beat" shows up in WAY too many of the choruses.

I Have a leak of this cd from a few months back but I don't think it includes all you have. It's got development and 1000 words on it as well as a remix of though shalt always kill. I really like the intelligent rhymes throughout. They killed at Coachella too. Good stuff.

shakermaker113
05-04-2008, 10:20 PM
is everyone else's copy called 'angels' instead of angles?

and are Waiting For The Beat To Kick In and Reading My Dreams combined into one track? is Reading My Dreams supposed to be a hidden track?

It's getting heavy rotation at my house so yeah, I'd say it's good. Fixed is a pretty clever call-out and TSAK is a straight up party rockin' dance anthem. At least Norman Cook thinks so.

Vocals are strong, humble and kinda funny. The beats are consistently fresh.

B+

Lee, is yr show archived somewhere?

PassiveTheory
05-08-2008, 10:48 PM
I wish.

I can't legally pod-cast it because we don't own the material aired by the artists... Public affairs shows CAN be pod-cast, but music shows... no.

I started off my 2nd show with some Tricky. I can't wait for Knowle West Boy to come out so I can play it.

But um, for next week? I'm thinking some Kruder and Dorfmeister, more Orb, some Morcheeba, Supreme Beings of Leisure, and Wax Poetic.

Oh I'm definitely playing this mashup of Thom Yorke's "Analyze" with Jeff Buckley's "You and I" at some point in the evening. Trip-hop it may be not, but ambient and fucking amazing? Yes.

Any requests? lol.

If it stopped there, maybe they could be brushed off as a minor annoyance, but then Pip sets the scene for the rest of Angles with this: "Thou shalt remember that guns, bitches, and bling were never part of the four elements and never will be." (Never mind that a minute earlier, he deifies Johnny Cash, Jim Morrison, and Jimi Hendrix-- good luck finding no-good women and violence in their songs.)

Hey. Hey guys. It's a nonissue. The writer's clearly an idiot.

0.2??? what the HELL?

this is why I don't read pitchfork's reviews.

Hannahrain
08-28-2008, 09:33 AM
But it's all ruined by Pip doing his Oliver Twista thing all over it-- because he's so smart, he's gonna enjamb as many words as possible into his verses despite the fact that his complete lack of breath control has him sounding like a pre-teen Victorian bootblack halfway through every line.

That's not what enjamb means. It's not the same as jam. Guy's an idiot.

That was the most ridiculous review I have ever read. What a fucking joke. I love how most of Pip's lines that he quotes are skewed way out of context. It's because Pip points out the shittiness of other rap including their beloved Dizzee Rascal.

It's a solid 7.5 in my book. I really think it could have been 9-10 songs in length (i.e. fuck Back from Hell and Fixed... Development and Rappers Battle could have been b-sides).

WARNING for those planning to go the the show @UCSD:

I just got back from Busdriver at the loft tonight and the sound is PATHETIC.

I'm very frustrated right now because Busdriver can put on one hell of a show. He had to repeatedly ask the sound person to turn up this mic or the other, couldn't hear the beats, bass was nonexistent, we came to the conclusion that only 1 speaker was utilized. I won't even get into the annoying crowd, I just hope that the show tomorrow won't attract the same type of people. You could clearly tell that Busdriver and antimc were frustrated - as they should be. The tracks sound better in my car than they did tonight. I really hope that whoever is in charge of sound tomorrow knows what the fuck they are doing. I was really looking forward to tonight but very much disappointed. I hope tomorrow night is not a repeat.

09-27-2008, 11:10 PM
I wouldn't expect good sound. The Loft just opened, is under basically student control, and seems to be more of a hangout spot than a show spot.

unknown
09-28-2008, 12:15 AM
True - but for the openers tonight the sound was too loud and for busdriver there wasn't enough sound. somewhere in the middle would've been better, but for the amount of speakers they had you'd expect something more not to mention some type of balance between the music equipment and the mics. we'll see how tomorrow goes. I am quite aware the loft just opened and the student control is obvious - they tried to deny us entrance because we weren't students (nowhere on the busdriver page on their site did it say you had to be a student). They ended up telling us to find 3 students to go in with so we did... don't know how that changed anything. If it is meant to be a "hang out" spot then fine - but they plan on having shows - busdriver and dan le sac vs scroobius pip deserve to have some tolerable sound, not some hack turning their set into something hard on the ears, it was very rough to listen to knowing his live show potential. but thanks for your input.

oh there is an opener? i didn't see any info on one on the site or on the tickets....

I'm really hoping the sound is at a point where you can at least hear the beats and whoever is on the mic. I'm still a bit pissed about last night. Another thing that was annoying is that there was this group right in front of the stage that was just going completely ape shit over the show and a bunch of us were on the side of the stage just expecting more. It was in no way the performers fault though, how can you put on a decent performance when your music does not sound like it's suppose to? Here's hoping!

I'm glad the Chargers won, at least I won't go in a bad mood!!!! :)

but if it is bad like last night, I'll riot with you.

I actually couldnt make it. I was planning on it, but I got pretty torn up at MSTRKRFT the night before, and was still feeling pretty shitty. The fact that they switched the date of the show last minute really fucked it up for me and my friends. I was planning on a day of rest in between shows, and my friends had some other stuff going on last night, so none of us could make it. I hope they will give us a refund.

What time did they go on and how long did they play for? What was the crowd like? Was it packed, or empty?

awww sucks you were unable to go. it was a real chill time. we got there around 745 and dan le sac, scroobius pip and b dolan were all sitting at a table selling merchandise. they were very friendly, giving autographs, chatting it up with people and taking pictures. dan le sac and scroobius pip started around 930 and went till about 1030 or 1045. it was by no means empty, but the crowd was pretty laid back - maybe around 125 people?? seemed like they really enjoyed the crowd - scroobius ended each song with "thank you very much", very polite - they were cracking jokes with crowd. the loft is a lounge spot with art on the walls, big windows, and newer decor - the surroundings helped to create a very non-rowdy crowd. they gave a very solid performance. unfortunately the stupid battery in my camera decided to slowly die after the beat that my heart skipped (1st tune they performed) but here are some photos and vid.... wish i got them doing cream :( didn't record that at coachella either

Yeah, it was real cool because it was so intimate. A few days before the show I was telling my brother, you know- I bet the place is gonna be small and we'll get to meet them, maybe take a picture with them and talk to them!

we sure did! and while the crowd energy wasn't like it was at Coachella - their energy was completely there!!!
