He was the best dj. its amazing how natural he is at djing. Ending with the REM remix was truly sweet! the funny thing is right when he finished his "short 2 hr set" is when he was just getting warmed up!!!! all these electro djs like justice etc. dont hold a candle to this guy. Im sure many long time EDM fans will agree...

I really wish I had been in their longer (was only in for about the last 30 minutes or so). I could tell he was an old-school house dj just by the amount of time he got in the tent, but the little I did catch was great! And whoever mentioned about him being more pro than all the electro-revival dj's (way too many this year) was totally right. Much respect.

Oh man. When he dropped the REM remix at the end, and every single person in the entire tent was signing along and just grooving like there's no tomorrow, that remains one of the most memorable experiences i've had all weekend.
THAT is what Coachella is supposed to be - That kind of feeling.

Wow - those photos bring back such great memories!
I was down in front on the right side too. We must have all been right there together. Everyone I know that was there is still talking about the feeling when they were singing Losing My Religion. Fantastic!!!

Man! I caught the 1st 40 minutes or so of his set. I was exhausted and could only chill in the back of the tent. I first heard of Tenaglia in 2001 when he did some remixes for Depeche Mode's Exciter album. It sounds like I should have found the energy to make it up front for the entire 2 hours. I was impressed with what I heard. Truly is a professional on the decks.

I was a little on the left but closer to the center...That girl in the picture was a total stranger but she had the biggest smile on her face and we were both feeling the beats and when I caught the ball we both looked at each other and got a huge smile and I said lets take a picture!!!

That's why Tenaglia is called the DJ's DJ. During Winter Music Conference, which is where all the EDM artists gather every year, most of the big name DJ's go to his party to listen to him. It's like going to an All-Star game where the All-Stars are the crowd cheering for 1 Super Star.

i want to say he had the best sahara performance
but sasha & digweed raped it for me
but Danny T...made my big fat ass dance with a sombrero and helped 10 people dance like a zombie in the front right of the arena
Danny T even looked over to where I was and gave me a thumbs up

Danny's set was one of my most anticipated performances for this year. I didn't really see anyone else in the line up that was known for throwing down the deeper base that he does...only other DJs like that were in the Do Lab area. A highlight of my weekend, for sure!

Some kind soul posted a good chunk of his set on youtube in several different parts - decent enough quality too. Just type in Tenaglia Coachella and I think there are 11 different parts.
They were right next to me too as I can see myself getting down whenever they pan the crowd. Great times.

you must not be referring to danny T then. Modeselektor came after Danny T did. Not BN.
If you think Danny T killed the vibe, then you weren't there during the last 20 minutes when he played "Losing My Religion" and every single person in that tent was dancing and singing along to it. I don't really care for that song, but that was one of the best moments i've had in a dance tent ever.

They should have put him on during most of Roger Waters' set... it would have made more sense to put a big name DJ on during a majority of Waters' set... Danny T is a big name DJ that will satisfy the needs of the sahara tent crowd, but at the same time, he isn't someone that you'd be really pissed about missing (for me, it was SMD. I wanted to see them badly.)

I haven't compared those people to anything. although I HAVE heard most of those people's coachella 08 sets (thank you bootleg thread). what I said was, danny tenaglia was not the best. and he wasn't. he's a very good DJ. and it's great to see how many people are willing to shake their asses to some true house, but I think you've forgotten something-
aphex twin played friday night, and took the audience from west coast hip hop through hardcore, through gabber, through drum and bass, through acid house, through deep house, through drill and bass, and then erased everyone's minds with a wall of sound for a finale. THAT was the best act in the sahara this past year.
I want to know who's alias PC is. the intention to troll in his posts is just too palpable for him to be a real person. if he is, he's truly the stupidestperson this board has ever seen.

Funny how some people think that they heard something great while others say it whas shit. My good friend who WAS a big Aphex Twin fan before Coachella, said a completely different thing; he hated the set saying that it sounded too midi (computer generated sounds). Who knows?
frozen pilgrim
09-29-2008, 12:35 PM
midi-like?
midi can be used to trigger analog sounds. that was, in fact, its' original purpose. midi isn't the sound, midi is the language used to trigger the sound. it's sheet music that instruments can read on their own. Musical Instrument Digital Interface.
I admit however that I'm nitpicking, so pay no mind to that first bit.
but yeah. your friend was either watching someone else, or... yeah. that's the most inaccurate description I've ever heard. he (aphex) opened with an ambient construction, then proceeded to take the audience through almost every concievable type of dance music. he opened with welcome the terrordome and closed with a wall of bass noise centered around 'fear' by current value.

There is a lot of passion in this thread. WOW. Danny T was SICK. Although he did not beat Aphex Twin for me, but different strokes for different folks.

For the record during "losing my religion" there was an amazing vibe that had the entire crowd jumping like crazy.

good shit
As for the whole DJ argument:
You can NOT be a DJ (Disc Jockey) with out discs, either CD or Vinyl. PERIOD.
I think the whole argument is retarded. We should just ditch the whole "DJ" title because it causes SOOOOO many arguments and is an incorrect use of language.
Be an "Electronic Music Artist", nothing wrong with a different title.
I guess the title "DJ Who gives a fuck" is more zippy, then just "who gives a fuck"
If you mix or produce good music that is all that matters.
right?

word, trick. word.
I think it's perfectly okay to use the term DJ without using CDs or vinyl. there is literally no difference in between a laptop and two jog dials, and two CDJs. a series of ones and zeros being played decoded and played back by a digital-analog converter, with transport control provided by an indirect platter.
DJ and producer. two terms with clear meanings, to me:
DJ: plays back, beatmatches, and mixes other people's music
producer: creates music from scratch.
lots of people are both.
but yeah. disqualifying people who don't use CDJs or turntables is really, really, really stupid.
myelectrolife
01-08-2009, 04:50 PM
I think that "DJ" is an over used term that generalizes a technique used many sample and electronic based musical artists. Its a dated term that leads to HUGE debates (like this one). The title DJ needs to be retired.
When you think about it its kinda weird to put your technique in the name of your musical identity.
Its like saying, "c'mon guys lets go see, Rock AC/DC"
or
"I had a great time at the, Jazz Miles Davis show."
All Im saying is that if you want to be technical, if your a Disc Jockey it would seem that you would need some discs to jockey,...right?
I use both 1200's and my computer. Both are equally valid ways to accomplish the same thing. One is not better then another.
But its a grey area with that title.
