This band doesn't get enough recognition. I'm bumping this because I haven't been able to stop listening to the last EP or album since they dropped.

And they are incredible live.

Yeah, I've heard it, not for like a year though and as I said before it didn't make a very good impression on me. I was talking about their last two full lengths in my post. I will definitely include it in my relistening though. The way that I heard of these guys was seeing them live. They were awesome. Their live show just didn't translate on their albums. I wish I had my hard drive at work and I could load their discography onto my ipod right now, but alas I will have to wait til I get home.

This is a well-timed bump for me, yesterday I just realize how fucking brilliant Bitte Orca is and how not only is it the best album I've yet heard from these guys (still finding my way through their early stuff) but it's also one of the year's best albums, I have it ranked #3 for 09 now. I sorta listened to it before... but somehow I hadn't given it my full attention. It's pretty fascinating and pretty entertaining stuff.

Point being... I really want to go to their Troubadour show now. I can't see them at Bonnaroo but I really think I should go out of my way to catch them live now...

pancakespancakes

I like them pretty equally, but I've listened to Veckatimest a good 20 times more than I've listened to Bitte Orca, so it's hard to say. I have a feeling these two will be battling it out for the #2 spot on my best of 2009 list.

Neutral Milk Hotel
06-09-2009, 01:11 AM
Uh... This record's great, but better than Veckatimest?... I'm gonna go with no.

Why do you care? Furthermore the reviews weren't written by the same critic, so your point is moot.

PassiveTheory
06-09-2009, 01:14 AM
Same website, and as you said yourself, the staff reaches a consensus that the review represents the website and, thus, everyone who works there. So yes, the asshole who spent the majority of his review talking about Ed Drosde's twitter is cool with that score.

Neutral Milk Hotel
06-09-2009, 01:21 AM
No, what I said was that the staff reaches a consensus as to what gets Best New Music. The individual critic picks his own score, thus meaning that it gets you nowhere to compare the Veckatimest score to the Bitte Orca score. It could be that the guy who wrote the Bitte Orca review thinks Veckatimest is a 9.5.

And really, can't we just be happy for Dirty Projectors? Veckatimest debuted at #8; it's clear that album was going to be a phenomenon no matter what. But Dirty Projectors will really benefit from this attention, and that's great. I love the album and have a feeling it could slip to my #1 of 2009 by year's end. It might not be quite as accomplished as Merriweather Post Pavilion or Veckatimest, but I have a really strong affection for it.

So far the album reminds me a little bit of Battles' album, but some songs are sticking out upon first listen (it took me a few listens to get into Battles). I'll have to listen to Bitte Orca a few times to really appreciate it. "Two Doves" has become an instant classic for me though. I could definitely see this as a contender against Veckatimest (which for me, has beat out Merriweather) for album of the year.

Is this a great year for music or what? Animal Collective, The Horrors, Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear, Phoenix, St. Vincent... This is getting ridiculous! I hope Massive Attack and Gorillaz don't drop the torch!

Hahah... seriously!

I always love the odd years. I knew this year was going to be lovely. 2003, 2005, 2007, those are the finest years of the decade for me. Kinda funny how everyone has my same 3 favorite albums of the year though. I have no originality this year.

Setlist from the last time they played L.A., 7/8/09 at the Troubadour:

Two Doves
Cannibal Resource
Remade Horizon
Ascending Melody
No Intention
Fucked for Life
Gimme Gimme
Thirsty and Miserable
Rise Above
Stillness is the Move
Useful Chamber
Temecula Sunrise

Fluorescent Half Dome
Knotty Pine

Remade Horizon was especially mesmerizing, and Temecula Sunrise was fantastic.

You kids have fun tonight. Saw them on Wednesday. I'd love to see them again at Coachella.

Dirty Projectors were incredible last night. They were supposed to go on at 10pm but everything was late so they didnt go on until around 10:45pm. They played for around 90 mins. The female vocals and harmonies were just awesome. I saw Mark's roommate there. The show was also sold out! Had a great time. No pbrs were dropped or thrown. Fact.

Just got back from both Dirty Projectors shows in San Diego (Birch Theater) and LA (Jensen Rec Center) and they were both fantastic shows.

Two Doves seems to be quite the spellbinding experience in both cases and the band itself consists of superb harmonizing and unbelieveable chemistry. Definitely one of the best live acts around.

All of you fuckers are in for a real treat... DO NOT MISS THEM AT COACHELLA.

My confirmation came from Angel, who is an absolute sweetheart. On a side note, BRANDON, I wish I would have obtained your number before the show, my friend and I would have greatly appreciated some of your help around the North Park area. We waited around in both the lobby and the bar to see if we could catch you. =(

I know the diff. between timbre, and having some nasally tendencies. She is a strong singer, but a bit nasally. People covered their ears sometimes because of how she was singing(pitchy, nasally, whatever works for you). When singing great people don't need to cover their ears. Also I never said that notes are wrong, just a bit off. I'm sure it was just a one night thing. for the record I went to the early show last night. So enough on that, how long did they play for during the 2nd show? cause the first show was about 1 hour.

hawkingvsreeve
11-01-2009, 12:22 PM
When someone says that a vocalist is pitchy, they mean that the notes aren't correct, which is what it seems like you are saying. I dont understand how a note can be correct but "a bit off." Also people covering their ears could have been due to volume. Some peoples voice resonate differently to different people, and a number of factors (mics, speakers, volume, room acoustics) can contribute to how you perceive the sound. She sounds great on the record, and of the three times I have seen the band she and the other girls have been consistently fantastic.

Sushov I also would like to add that alot of what you supposedly endured with Amber's voice (which was fucking phenomenal in my opinion) may have had alot to do with the horrible sound at the Jensen Rec Center. Also, I went to the second show and can confirm that they played for about 1 hour and 45 minutes. The Birch Theater in SD was a much better venue for them, that place is perfect.

yeah, LA early show had (I think in this order):
The Bride
Ascending Melody
No Intention
Two Doves (acoustic)
Useful Chamber (acoustic)
Remade Horizon (acoustic)
Temecula Sunrise (acoustic)
Stillness is the Move
Cannibal Resource
Fluorescent Half Dome

The song they played on Jimmy Fallon

Wow, that's fortunate. If they had replaced Fluorescent Half Dome with either of the new songs on the Temecula Sunrise EP, Bitte Orca would have my Album of the Year award. That really takes the album down a notch for me, especially to end with that song.

Dirty Projectors Release Free Single

Near the end of last year, Dirty Projectors released a four-track, UK-only EP featuring two new songs from the sessions for their excellent Bitte Orca album. UPDATE: According to Domino, the EP was never actually came out. This is the first time these songs are being released. And now everyone who didn't track those songs down back then can download them for free with full consent from the band. No guilt, no problem.

According to a MySpace message, 20 people who download the "Ascending Melody" 7" will get an actual vinyl copy of the single, which is backed by "Emblem of the World". (We reviewed "Ascending Melody" back in November.) The vinyl version is also on sale now at Domino. Sign up for the free download via a handy widget, which is embedded below.

The band also have a tour of Australia and New Zealand coming up-- preceded by a couple gigs in New York and Los Angeles. Check out the dates after the jump:

"Ascending Melody":

01 Ascending Melody
02 Emblem of the World

http://pitchfork.com/news/37759-dirty-projectors-to-perform-2005-album-ithe-getty-addressi-in-full/

Back in 2005, an earlier iteration of the Dirty Projectors released their concept album The Getty Address, which Pitchfork's Jason Crock called "a modern opera about post-9/11 America, the destruction of our natural wilderness, the confrontation between Hernan Cortes and the Aztecs in the early 16th century, and a protagonist named after Don Henley." An ambitious album, to say the least.

Dirty Pro frontman Dave Longstreth has come a long way since that album, but he hasn't forgotten it. And at two forthcoming shows in New York and Los Angeles, the band will play the album in full, with the 15-piece ensemble Alarm Will Sound and conductor Alan Pierson helping out. They'll also play songs from last year's Bitte Orca at both shows.

The New York show will go down February 19 at Lincoln Center, as part of the American Songbook concert series. The L.A. show is scheduled for February 27 at Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the band will co-headline with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. During the first half, the Philharmonic will play orchestral pieces that Longstreth picked out. The band will take over and play the album during the second half. Big things for the Dirty Projectors! The L.A. Philharmonic doesn't rock with just anyone, after all.

Also! Back when the band released the album, Longstreth wrote a letter to Don Henley (the real Don Henley) explaining the album and why he decided to name his main character after the Eagles frontman. You can read it over at the Getty Address website.

TallGuyCM

Probably. Their drummer has a unique stlye and just owns it. All three girls were right on point. The one who plays keyboard and sings Two Dove was just fucking phenomal. Yep, their show at the Troubadour last year was light years better than their Disney Hall show with the LA Phil a few weeks ago.

And yeah, the drummer! Based on the DP recordings, I really didn't anticipate percussion as hard-hitting and intense as it was live. But yeah, the guy goes off.

And they didn't play "Two Doves" when I saw them last year, but I always thought it was Amber who sang that song (the girl who sings lead vocals on "Stillness"). Hmm, must have had it wrong.

But yeah, if you haven't seen them before literally skip anyone else who they might conflict with. With how little must-sees there are on Saturday, don't miss them. You'll regret it.

Hehe, dude. You are very wrong. The girl that sings Two Doves is the keyboardist and she is absolutely amazing. Stillness was a serious disapppoint to be honest (it was my favorite Dirty Projectors song going in.) Oh how their live performance seriously changed my perspective of the band! Two Doves was one of the most beautiful things I've ever witnessed in my entire life and that song pretty much did nothing for me on the album.

Hmm. I like the sound of the song, but fuck, man. Longstreth should know his limits. The parts where he really tries to hit the high notes are pretty bad sounding.

Oh, I didn't know this thread existed (Chris...yes, a combination of work and that I appear to be less "honed in" to this board than others is why I'm just now on this song today).

I like the new song. I'm not sure how this amounts to a new direction, though? Seems like a natural extension of Bitte Orca to me, albeit a little more pop-y. And, Pot...huh? Are you also making a change in direction statement with that? If so, wow...I don't hear Blonde Redhead in this at all. It will be interesting to see how the entire album turns out.

Dirty Projectors have announced the long-awaited follow-up to 2009's Bitte Orca. Swing Lo Magellan is out July 10 in the U.S. and July 9 internationally via Domino. The album includes the just-released track "Gun Has No Trigger", as well as previously discussed tracks "Maybe That Was It", "About to Die" ("a Thriller-style song"), and "Swing Lo Magellan" (about GPS systems).

Dave Longstreth wrote, recorded, produced, and mixed the album, with input from the other band members: Amber Coffman, Haley Dekle, Nat Baldwin, and Brian McOmber. (Angel Deradoorian is "on hiatus" from the band, according to a press release.)

Dirty Projectors have two shows scheduled right now: At the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago July 13-15, and at the Prospect Park Bandshell in Brooklyn July 10.

Check out the tracklist

Swing Lo Magellan:

01 Offspring Are Blank
02 About to Die
03 Gun Has No Trigger
04 Swing Lo Magellan
05 Just From Chevron
06 Dance for You
07 Maybe That Was It
08 Impregnable Question
09 See What She Seeing
10 The Socialites
11 Unto Caesar
12 Irresponsible Tune

I'm sure that's the reason why Angel took a break. She's been writing her own music and, perhaps, that didn't mix well with this project (and her stuff is pretty solid, from the little that I've heard).

Between this and that first single, it seems this new album might be much less frenetic, and moodier as well. I loved their last album, but I also welcome the change. Good stuff.

Well, I'm glad they didn't replace Deradoorian with someone attractive.

I suppose she's attractive if you have a thing for Juliette Binoche.

Album is kind of meh for me... I liked 4-5 songs.

I wish he'd just make a whole album along the lines of Irresponsible Tune, it'd be a contemporary version of Another Side of Bob Dylan

Just like being there. Those harmonies lose nothing in a live environment.

where is the hip hop remix of "Gun Has No Trigger"? :)

when I listen to that song, I feel like somebody like Jay-Z is going to come on and kick a verse. That'd be a cool collaboration.
