There were so many amazing facets. The sound was BY FAR the best at Coachella all weekend. It was just a complete mind fuck! the sound was swirling all around Never seen a better show, ever. That's how it's done, not much more I can say. I didn't even know half the songs. Prince and Portishead were good, but NOT this good.

Everybody loses. Both performances sucked, especially for that $322.00 ticket. Coachella loses. Bonnaroo didn't just de-throne them this year, they beat the living shit out of them.

i've never really listened to Pink Floyd in my life...
but I watched some of his set, before he did DSOTM
and it was absolutely stunning. The song he played about being in Beirut with the poor family that took him in brought tears to my eyes. And the pig being released was one of the most surreal moments of the weekend.
The amount of his set I saw was fantastic.

It was "Vote Obama" confetti. A lot of it ended up on lawns and streets blocks away from the venue. It also ended up landing near the outdoor stage apparently. So basically the plane totally missed the target.

This set was simply unbelievable. The surround sound was incredible (wow, GV) and the effects were what-the-fucktastic, but my favorite element was the crowd-- thousands and thousands of people singing along together, creating a kind of hum over the field. The show was sensory overload, for sure.
Waters was visibly emotional at the end. And that comes back to my favorite thing about Coachella: the crowd gives so much love to the artists that you can tell that it's kind of overwhelming for the bands sometimes. I'm thinking about Arcade Fire '05, Gogol Bordello '06, and most of the bands we saw this weekend. I love those moments when, as a music junkie, you feel like the respect is mutual, and you know they're thinking, "I have the greatest job on earth."
Thank you everybody for the most incredible weekend.

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it, but Roger's voice was in fine form tonight. I hadn't heard him do anything vocally since his performance at Live 8 (which was off the hook TERRIBLE) and I just assumed his voice was toast and everyone else but Roger would sing most of the time. WRONG! His performances in Mother and Another Brick In the Wall (pt. 2) were tops. For his age, his voice has held up fine when he really focuses and he did just that tonight.
Also, what an incredible bass player! Easily one of the top rock bass players ever. I can't believe how smooth and thumping he plays that thing. And I never knew the opening clock ticking in Time was Roger tamping perfectly on a hand-muted bass guitar. AMAZING!

That's Waters trademark. The Floyd were the first band to use quad sound in a live setting dating back to the late 60's. It's one of the reasons they are the foremost live rock pioneers of all time.
However I do agree, you have to give GV alot of credit for picking such a great closer and going along with all of Roger's ideas (which probably is a pain in the ass).

Does anyone have a Youtube clip of Lili Haydn's violin solo at the first break in Comfortably Numb? I'd sure appreciate it. I had to rub my eyes at first to truly believe she was pulling that off on a violin. At the end of the solo, the people around me erupted in cheers. I am getting a little goosepimply even thinking about it. So much emotion. Who would've thought that song could seem fresh to me after all this time?

Roger Waters' performance at Coachella this year is my personal fave performance I've seen in the 5 years I've attended. It was purely powerful, purely emotional, purely inspiring for me. The music of Pink Floyd is probably, simply put, the most important music in my life. I've avoided seeing Waters or the Gilmour "Pink Floyd" for a variety of reasons. And I'm glad I did - this one performance was everything I needed to see.
Coachella definitely felt different in a lot of ways this year. But I consider it it to be a constantly changing beast. And it has always delivered for me, regardless of those changes and whether or not I liked them at first.
Thank you Goldenvoice for Roger Waters and for another amazing Coachella.

Graffiti artist Slick puts finishing touches on Roger Waters' inflatable pig backstage at Coachella. There's a $10,000 reward for the return of the pig, which was released during Roger Waters' performance.
INDIO, California -- Concert promoters are offering a $10,000 reward and four lifetime passes to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival for the safe return of a giant inflatable pig that's gone missing.
The spray-painted pig balloon was released during Roger Waters' performance Sunday at the festival. The school-bus-size prop emerged during "Pigs," a song from Pink Floyd's 1977 album Animals.
"A pig got loose last night," said Bill Fold, one of the festival's producers, on Monday. "We really like him and want him back.... It's a very emotional time for us."
The pig was covered with political graffiti: "Don't be led to the slaughter," read one slogan. "Fear builds walls," read another. A cartoon Uncle Sam painted on the pig held two bloody cleavers, and the porker's belly read "Obama," with a checked ballot box alongside, according to the Associated Press.
Waters brought the three-day Coachella festival to a close Sunday with two sets, during which he played the Pink Floyd classic Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety.
If you have any knowledge of the whereabouts of the graffiti-covered piggie, send an e-mail to lostpig@coachella.com.

This is my review on it,
gokingsgo I used your pics, hope you dont mind.
Anyone who didn't like the set,
Or thinks seeing Justice is better than seeing the man behind Pink Floyd,
is a music amateur and forever will suck at life.
(lol)
Thinking back over the years on how many music events I've attended within every genre of music
to all of the artists, DJ's, and bands I've seen that I've hyped afterwards or given credit for being "the best",
nothing could have ever prepared me for the experience that I was able to be around for last night.
Where does someone begin when telling a story of how one single event hit them so hard and emotionally that it literally changed their life simply for being at that certain place in time?
I know, without a doubt, that this was the most legendary music event I will ever experience in my life, and I would go so far as to possibly say it was the best set ever performed in the history of recorded music up to this point.
This event was 30 years in the making.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c163/rjl420/Coachella/08/IMG_0744.jpg
I'll start with the overall scenario: 50,000 people, 80 acres of open land all with clear view to the main stage, the best and most technologically advanced sound systems and lighting equipment ever invented and that were definitely used for the first time during this set, anywhere on Earth. This set goes way, way beyond the worshipping or appraise of a single artist/group (Pink Floyd), this set was a mindblowing achievement and major step up within the entire world of Audio/Visual graphic design.
They were controlling the entire atmosphere around us. It felt like the entire biosphere was somehow electrically-charged, and the aspects of sound and light waves were all being controlled and manipulated at once depending on the situation occurring at that moment. Everything was done perfect. The graphic artists who worked on the 3 hour customized visuals on the 500x'-300x' ft. screen were able to come up with images that were meaningful, vibrant, and unique, yet still retaining an classic "Pink Floyd / 70's" type of appeal even though they had been now perceived on equipment of the newest technology.
The first half of the show contained songs from The Wall, Wish You Were Here and Animals, among others, as well as including a fully new song by Waters telling a story about an oppressed family in Beirut from the past, which ends with a few lines that incited a feeling of the biggest despise and disappointment towards our leader than has ever been felt collectively at the same time by a group this big. "Are these the people that we should bomb // Are we so sure they mean us harm // Is this our pleasure, punishment or crime // Is this a mountain that we really want to climb // The road is hard, hard and long, Put down that two by four // This man would never turn you from his door // Oh George! Oh George! // That Texas education must have fucked you up when you were very small.
The song "Pigs" was the highlight of the first half of the show. During this song, an extremely large balloon in the form of a pig (containing a bunch of rebellion and/or non-descript words) was launched from one corner and led through the crowd until it had reached all corners. At the end of the song, right at the peak of the final chorus, the pig's ropes were cut and the helium-filled, baseball-diamond sized object floated into space above the heads of everyone at the park, able to be seen for many minutes following. Somewhere out there in space right now, is a big floating pig.

After the first half cut out, the most intense intermission ever took place. The lights shut out and ambient artificial chirping noises and LSD-inspired auditory hallucinations were being injected into the air around us, moving at different frequencies and pitches, creating an eerie and dark atmosphere. A picture of the Moon went up the main screen. Everyone knew what was coming. But no one would have ever thought the show could get any better than it had already been up to this point.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c163/rjl420/Coachella/08/IMG_0749.jpg
The 2nd half began and "Dark Side of the Moon" began playing in its entirety. Within seconds of the first lyrics coming out of Waters' mouth, people began to fully realize the power of where we all were at that time. There was truly a sense that the last two decades (of Pink Floyd not playing together) had "all lead up to this point", for both the younger and older generations of this time in rock music as a whole, and irregardless of the other members of the original Pink Floyd not around. It was as if the culmination of millions and millions of previous individual experiences, from people both alive and dead, and their relationship with this Greatest Rock Album of all time, were all being built up hidden through time, and finally unleashed in an explosion on the crowd who were there that night.
The second song, On The Run, which is the instrumental ambient soundscape track, ended with an explosion on stage that I still don't understand as being physically possible. The song peaked with an explosion "in the screen" (as in, it was computerized design), but as it exploded, everyone in the audience felt the physical push of an energy field hitting them. And I mean that literally - they somehow altered the density of the molecules around us to simulate being pushed backwards from a specific focal point. Coachella is obviously at the forefront of technology and there is no doubt in my head that this single set was a multi-million dollar operation to complete.
After Dark Side, he encored with "Another Brick In The Wall", which obviously blew the minds of everyone there, all chanting the same long-established phrase of the song. And the final song of the night was a hugely extended version of Comfortably Numb, which was so musically fine tuned, perfect, and overwhelming that I froze up and could no longer move one single muscle. I stood there and looked ahead at the stage with my jaw open, staring at the intense visuals mixed, unable to process one single real thought while music of this intensity was playing on this big of a scale around me.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c163/rjl420/Coachella/08/IMG_0762.jpg
The end of the song struck and I was left on my ass, not knowing how to react to the feeling of having my entire psyche and range of emotions having been ripped apart from inside me and put back together within the span of 3 hours. This wasn't a show dedicated to Roger Waters, or even Pink Floyd in general. This show was presented for, and presented by, the entire people of our generation and it will be talked about even decades from now as a legendary and historical performance in all of modern music.
I can almost say even if I was to never to go to another concert again, it wouldn't matter to me, because that single experience has left me asking myself "What left is there to do?".

I didn't go to the concert on Sunday (I know I missed out). But my brother and friends did. I guess the pig broke away from the strings and the pig floated away. I was just watching the news and they are offering a $10,000 reward and 4 Coachella tickets every year for life in return of the pig!!! I need to find that pig!!

I felt like I was in an effing forest or jungle during the intermission; sitting underneath the fog, the chirping, the lights, it was pretty magical. Best live experience of my life, the best musical performance has to go to Portishead tho.

Beautiful review! Very enjoyable read.
That sound system and the trip noises that came out during intermission are a Pink floyd/Waters trademark that goes back to the late 60's when they first started pioneering the live rock experience. Waters is a master of theatrics, and controls tension and ambience with various tweaks of the crowd.
Now you know why people go on and on about how great Pink Floyd were. They were the greatest live act in rock history, the greatest art rock band in history (IE all that plays at Coachella followed in their footsteps) and Waters was the mastermind of that live string pulling.
Really nice review. Thx for posting.

I'm not even going to bother reading this thread.
from a purely technical standpoint, waters' show was the most impressive I've ever seen anywhere ever. the logistics of creating clean, crisp, perfectly imaged surround sound in a concert setting at 140 db are just mind-boggling. I have the utmost respect for the (probably enormous) crew it took to set up and stage that spectacle. technically the music was flawless. I thought the musicians waters' chose were exceptionally talented, but were completely respectful of the way the work was written. no showboating, no masturbatory excessive soloing, and no shameless mugging for the crowd. they kept it down to what it should have been about: the music.
and what beautiful music it was.
from an emotional standpoint, I was overcome. every song chosen (with the exception of leaving beirut) elicited a powerful emotional response nto only in myself, but very clearly in all those around me.
30,000+ singing 'wish you were here'? I felt more connected to humanity than I have in years and years.
the DSOTM prism represents something huge for myself, and I'm sure for many others- that visual metaphor for transformation and growth is both powerful and enduring, and seeing it materialised in such a perfect, careful, huge way made me happy to the pit of my soul that someone understood what a strong, important, universally communicable symbol it is:
the prism IS pink floyd. the prism IS lsd. the prism represents going into something with a singular, closed frame of mind, and coming out the other side with a new, bright, and limitlessly colorful view on existence.
to everyone that shared those beautiful moments with me, thank you for being there, thank you for singing along, thank you for being there with me to have my faith in existence renewed.

Where to even begin. I missed the 1st half but caught the intermission and Dark Side of the Moon. First off, I thought I was about to die and be launched into space during On The Run, if that is what it's like to have your mind melted then please give me some more of that. This performance has to rank not just in my top performances at Coachella (06 07 08) but best performances ever period hands down. The musicians were incredibly amazing, especially the drummer and the sound system, I have never heard or felt anything like that before.
I saw Daft Punk in 06 and Tiesto in 07, and in my humble opinion, this blew Daft Punk out of the water overall and made Tiesto's sound quality moot. (Go easy here; I'm an EDM/EBM music fan 1st and foremost) But up until I experienced Roger Waters last night, Tiesto took tops for having the best sounding sound system/mixing and Daft Punk took tops for the best overall knock your socks off performance. Roger Waters will be hard to match.

I started crying during the songs from Final Cut. Just blubbering ridiculously. So powerful.
However, the problem with that show is that the DSOTM is just a marketing tool to get people to show up to see an outstanding Waters show. The main set is incredibly powerful, but the DSOTM section is just like going to see a Floyd tribute band, especially since Waters seems to vanish for large portions of it. Brain Damage/Eclipse was beautiful as usual, though.
I'm biased though, as DSOTM is way low on my list of Floyd albums. And Money just makes me want put a bullet in my skull. However, as I was glancing around in boredom, I saw PassiveTheory's fro-shadow rocking out and that brought a smile to my face.
We were planning to leave early. At the end of In The Flesh, my wife turned around and said "Chromeo can fuck right off." We still headed for the campground in the middle of the encore, but it was out of exhaustion, not boredom.

Prince's show was more special, but Waters was technically flawless. (Which it should have been since he's done it 50-100 times, but still no mean feat on that field.
It was the combination of two completely different headliner shows that made this Coachella special. And the inclusion of a third incredibly bland one that kept it from being legendary.

Roger Waters show just took the prize. Best performance I've ever seen.

re: frozen pilgrim.....
Music is such a powerful thing.
It is what we all have in common.
To me, this was a moment in time when we can turn off all the negative energy that we throw at each other.
The music from Sunday evening took me back to different chapters of my life.
Like watching the screen behind Waters, I watched myself growing up.
I saw people long gone from my life.
I saw how I had changed their lives.
During Comfortably Numb, I relived the pain that had forever changed my life.
And as I held on tightly to Beverly, I cried...
to everyone that shared those beautiful moments with me, thank you for being there, thank you for singing along, thank you for being there with me to have my faith in existence renewed.
Very well said.
Even though I only met jazzz from the board, I know some of you had spotted me.
As ugly as I am, I know that I stand out like a soar thumb and I'm pretty hard to miss.
Maybe in 2009 we can shake hands between sets in the Sahara.
But for now, as said by frozen pilgrim,
thank you for being there, thank you for singing along, thank you for being there with me to have my faith in existence renewed.
Exactly!

Another thing I loved was looking around at the audience and seeing just how much other people were enjoying the set. I didn't know any of the words to the songs but hearing the entire crowd sing along was something else. There was this lady next to me who was so into the show, it really made me feel good inside just looking at her during the performance.
Also there was a guy up front with a DSOTM shirt and pajama pants with the DSOTM logo all over them. I bet he had a fucking blast.
Honestly, after everything was said and done it was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had.

waters reeled you all in. he made you watch him play his own songs, which were terrible. total cheapshot. i left during the half hour break i was so pissed, only to be greeted happily by the end of black mountain's set, some of chromeo, and JUSTICE. all 3 were better than waters by far, he was just a flashy light show. it was good at first, but totally killed my trip when he started fucking playing his own gayass fucked up stupid shitty nobodywantstohearem songs.
end.
Except that ALL of the songs are Roger's songs. Granted some are from when he was a member of Pink Floyd and some are from when he was a solo act. But they are ALL HIS SONGS. And more to the point, his solo stuff was powerful as well last night.
So, you blew it hard and now you want to justify it. You're not alone. But like I said in another thread here, I'm oh so glad there were people like you who left or just didn't show up. It's your loss (and what a loss it is!), but it was crowded enough.

Great reviews and comments. A few thoughts...
This event was 30 years in the making.
I think it was more like 42 years in the making. Set the controls for the heart of the sun is 41 years old, and the reflections on sanity and insanity were largely inspired by Waters' experiences/relationship with Syd Barrett - so I'd date it back to the original Floyd's heyday - 1966. But still, great review and feel largely the same as you.
I'm too lazy to dig out the other quote I want to comment on,... the complaint of Roger playing his solo stuff. With the exception of the Beirut song which I didn't love, his solo stuff is really great stuff. AMUSED TO DEATH is an amazingly prescient, almost prophetic album. I highly encourage anyone unfamiliar with it to check it out. (It ain't Radio KAOS). I was so moved by Perfect Sense. Honestly, I'd love to see a show of the entire album of Amused to Death.
But then, I'd also really like a time machine that could allow me to see every Floyd tour in history...
Coachella 2009 perhaps?

I didn't even think of how amazing that plane was until you all mentioned it. The rest of the show was so amazing that a flyby just kinda seemed normal. Wow. I can't say I think Waters was better than Prince because I think I'd have to rate them at the same level.
I had a moment when I suddenly realized "wait that other dude is doing all the singing. This is like a cover band with one of the band members" Then I remembered I didn't give a shit because it was just that awesome.
I think all the people who are hating on it just didn't appreciate the show as what it was. Those songs are amazing. I mean I remember going to a crappy laser light show(the one in the campground actually) just because it was Floyd music.

First let me say Amazing show Amazing..... & still even today in the news there's lil things to remind me the epic show I saw last night, lost pig somewhere out there in the Desert Mtns??? who knows. The plane missing its vote for Obama confetti on the crowd and dumping them all over Indio residents (which I guess GV has to help out with) well it waaaass

Great reviews and comments. A few thoughts...
You know, I'm still chewing over everything that went down yesterday. But now that you mention it, Perfect Sense may have been my favorite moment from the show- at least one of them. It was relentless. And Roger throwing his hands up in the air, singing without the mic at the end... it just felt powerful. I know he is basically hitting us across the head with a blunt object to get his point across with lyrics like
Hold on soldier
Prime time fodder for the News at Nine
But it worked last night. And damn well at that.

I have to say that I really wasnt expecting it to be as great as it was.
Hell, after everything else I experienced this weekend, it didnt need to be.
But then it happened, and it trumped EVERYTHING.
It trumped Radiohead in 04
It trumped Arcade Fire in 05
And (IM sorry but its true, as mind-blowing as it was) it trumped Daft Punk in 06.
Shit, it even trumped mother fucking PRINCE from the night before!
There was NOTHING like what we got last night, and from what I've been reading from the Floyd faithful online, we may have gotten one of the best, most definitive "Floyd" experiences ever.
Fucking ACE, man.

Understand that I am in no way a Pink Floyd Guy.
Ive heard the records and really like them, but I have no emotional investment with the band per se.
But last night was better than the "epic" that we (myself included) use all too often nowadays. And its making me rediscover PF in a whole new way.
I bought the DSOTM vinyl at Virgin immediately after the set last night.

Oh come on. Obama's 'losing' votes all the time according to the media. And over what? Shiat that has nothing to do with him. First Rev Wright and now this (along with a bunch more nonsense in between, like flag lapel pins). He's hardly responsible for Roger flying a plane around releasing his name on confetti that littered a couple of areas in Indio (oh no!). But yea, Obama's gonna lose another vote or two over it! He's been using that video package through the whole tour for the most part (I thought I noticed some slight changes from the Bowl shows, but that might have just been differences in intoxication level talking).
Still though, the scope of it all on the main stage was far above and beyond the Bowl, and I'm guessing most other venues he played at...

Pink Floyd is the greatest most innovative live act in rock/pop history. The guy behind all of the ideas for this was Roger Waters, dating back to 1966 with the worlds first raves in the London Underground. While Gilmour is great, he didn't care about the theatrics and ambience which Waters was obsessed with.
Pink Floyd's legendary status is not just because they made great studio albums. They have no peer in the live arena, even to this day.

Can I also mention how awesome it is that Waters so elegantly acknowledged the past? From slowly fading in and out between photos and footage of late 60's PF promotional materials during Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun, to turning Shine On You Crazy Diamond into one gigantic Syd eulogy, there stood a fitting tribute to the band with whom he created most of this brilliance with.
With that said, Perfect Sense Pts. I & II was still the tearjerker song of the set as far as I'm concerned, and when the line "Don't let the might of the Christian Right fuck it all up for you and the rest of the world" was uttered during Leaving Beirut, it was like a bomb exploded in the crowd, at least from where I was standing. God, it was all good.

Damn I am so jealous of you guys …. Well I do get to catch waters tomorrow night anyway …. In some ways seeing dsotm for you was better then when I first saw it because “in general” I think people like to see groups play songs they know and not new stuff … when I saw PF at the Hollywood bowl, it was the first time dsotm had ever been played in the US and the lp had only been out a few weeks if I remember right …. They did do quad in the bowl and that was the first outdoor show I heard with quad … we did have Kate bush (she was 19 I think) on the stage as a ballerina during a couple of numbers so that was special but you had the “new and improved” tech things … way to go Roger showing the kids some things stand the test of time …. It's been over 2 days now and I'm still emotionally wrecked. Wrecked in a good way I guess, but it doesn't make sense to my brain. No show has ever done this to me. I had to go to the bathroom at work 3 times now just because I started tearing up so hard in the office when thinking about the power & emotion I witnessed on Sunday Night. And I feel like a little girl for that. But It's not like I should deny it.
I'm torn up over whether or not I will ever see a show like that again. It seriously ripped my entire psyche apart and rearranged my brain. If I start to think about "any" moment in time during that entire set I immediately have to stand up and breathe hard because the feelings are overwhelming and I will most likely cry.
I've been going to many, many concerts for many, many years, and I never thought something like that could happen in my life. The event will be the most important and exciting time in my life with the exception [possibly] of marriage and kids.

Somewhere out there in space right now, is a big floating pig.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c163/rjl420/Coachella/08/IMG_0756.jpg
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c163/rjl420/Coachella/08/IMG_0758.jpg
Fantastic review.. I really don't see how Coachella can continually keep setting the bar higher and higher.. A fucking plane flew over, timed to music???? Prince rocking out until 1:00 AM?? Seriously.. what's next for 2009? U2, Led Zeppelin, maybe David Bowie ?? What an amazing show Roger put on.. and the sound system wow.. i'm very jealous I missed out this year. very.

I know you were being facetious btw …. I did want to add this on quad … I wish they would have followed up on this … after quad was out for a while, some music guy was trying to make what ever two more channels would be called … top and bottom? … therefore instead of the music or sounds going left to right, and swirling all around you, the other two channels made it possible to make the sound all around you even up and down … example was: you could record some vocals and say “this is your left ear” and the sound would be right there only spatially by your left ear, or “this is your foot” and the sound would seem like it was coming from your foot … can you imagine what kind of sonic cd’s we could have had with that sort of 6 channel set up … damn … x****

No worries, I love quad albums... it kills me that my current amplifier is so stupidly modern it can't play the ones I have properly.
I just find it hilarious how record companies, when presented with new technology, always immediately throw the hottest modern acts or catalogue titles at it, without ever thinking if those acts are necessarily presentable in that format. Seals & Croft to Quad Sound is like Shania Twain to DVD-Audio.

For anyone wondering "WTF??????" was up with that crazy sound, here is where it all started:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azimuth_co-ordinator
Pink Floyd used the first ever quadrophonic system for their live shows.
Here is Roger Waters messing aorund with it in 1969:

Having never been a big Pink Floyd fan, I watched through intermission and was pleasantly surprised and astounded, but then made the mistake of heading over to the Sahara.
And it's a decision that I will regret for a long time.
I really don't know how GV can possibly improve upon the Roger Waters' experience they helped deliver.

It's been two days, and I still keep playing Pink Floyd songs on my ipod. This was just an incredible show words can't even describe. Although hearing DSOTM was great, I loved hearing the songs from The Wall and Wish You Were Here even more. Do you think Paul could bring him back in 09 and do The Wall? Probably wishful thinking. I saw the David Gilmore version back in

FYI: DSOTM was released SIX months AFTER ther Bowl show in '72.
Check out the early versions of On The Run and Great Gig...OTR is basically drums and piano and GGITS has no vocals.
I still have the original boot "Crackers: Damn Braces, Bless Relaxes" a three disc vinyl package...xlnt quality.

It was 'Perfect Sense Part 2' and it actually was Marv Albert giving a play by play of a submarine battle... it's from his solo concept album 'Amused to Death', inspired by a book by Neil Postman. One of the main themes is how politics, war, etc. are reduced to forms of entertainment... this was definitely one of the highlights of the set for me.

one of the most intense experiences of my life. all of the history, humanity, beauty... it was overwhelming. i loved how we felt something that deeply touched us, moved us, made us see things more clearly.. i love reading about how some of us even cried. we were a community sharing the most powerful experience. waters sang the lyric about smoking a joint, and the entire crowd was suddenly filled with tiny orange flickers. it was incredible to be a part of that. especially knowing that everyone had to smuggle in the goods. i am young and radical and i just want to be free, and i've never felt that america or its politics stood for me.. so many political and social restraints... it can be hard to make real connections with people.. we are not comfortable looking into each others' eyes. for once, i really felt the connection. standing in the vast crowd, singing and breathing and cheering together, a tiny part of the whole. i'm glad the soul of rebellion still lives. this is the first time i've felt truly proud to be american. hope you can feel it.

Since the meme seems to be emerging (almost entirely from people that werent AT the show) that we that had our minds blown were just easily manipulated by pretty lights and spectacle, I figured I would repost here what I wrote in response to that on another board out on interwebland.....
Naw dude, remember that this was 3 hours of show, and it wasnt all spectacle.
Alot of the time there were no special effects at all, but there were still 60,000 of us rapt under the spell of these awesome songs.
Important to note: I seriously was not "A Pink Floyd Guy" at all. I expected little from Sunday night's set going in, but somewhere around "Set Controls for the Heart of the Sun" I was "in."
Plus, remember that this music isnt exactly an unproven quantity: alot of these are not only classics, but classics that you've heard so many times that they become cliche and lose alot of their power and context. But hearing these songs live, especially in a massive crowd of that many people all singing along and sharing a moment is really potent.
The sound and musicianship were tops too. Aside from his regular band who are flawless yet able to improvise, he brought out this violin player Lili Hayden who was able to wring more emotion and drama out of that thing than I thought was possible to get out of a violin.
If the pig, the plane, the splosions never happened you still would have felt a lump in your throat experiencing "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" in that crowd.
The rush of hearing an audience that size sing along to "Another Brick in the Wall" doesnt require pyro at all, nor did it feature any.
The songs, the solos, the sound, the singing along...these things werent beside the point, they WERE the point.
All that other stuff just fleshed this thing out into 3 dimensions in a way I've never experienced at a show before (and I go to ALOT of shows) and that I hope I get to experience again some day.
Still feeling it 3 days later. Takes alot more than explosions and runaway muppets to do that, especially to my jaded ass.

Let's put it this way; I grew up a product of hip-hop and I was completely annihilated by Waters. Especially when he did Wish You Were Here and Time--two of my favorites for very personal reasons. I'm not sure if I can ever forget the way I was affected by the performance, the pig, and the plane.

If you sent that 700 megger to me (Psilo707 on AIM) I would definitely put all the files together in one big part and host it on my fast FTP.
If not its cool though,. Im sure more vids will pop up, thanks for what you did upload!

if you know me, happy go lucky, never very negitive yada yada .. ok so i saw waters last night ... at least 3 people i talked to on the way out said it was the best concert they ever went to .. guess i have to say if i was rollling, it might have been top 5 or 10 ... as it were, i say maybe top 25 ... i have seen PF do better shows .... we did get the smaller indoor pig and that was cool ... being inside they didnt spread out the speakers so the rear ones were not actually in the back ... got our confetti which was pretty ... sound was great but not as great as a few NIN shows or king crimson i guess ... dont get me wrong, had a great time, saw a great show, but not close to the best show i ever saw :( x****

What’s sort of funny is: part of what I liked the most about the show was the politics … some people say keep politics out of music, but it’s always been an important part of some music and politics .. With my situation they only time I had tears last night was when they did bring the boys home …. Btw, gram Nash said he is going to do an update to one of the big protest songs from the dnc 68 (4 dead in Ohio maybe ) (I think that was the song he said) … x****

Pink Floyd is political, has always been political, always will be political. They are one of the most powerfully moving anti-war voices we have and thank god Waters doesn't cave to idiots who tell celebrities to "keep their mouths shut" just because they disagree with them.
Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Cat Stevens, Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, etc., etc., etc. Politics is most certainly a part of music and should be.

I love how you can hear the end of the virtual forest noises in this recording, as well as some of the quad effects like Waters laughter and the synths in On the Run.

Are people still under the impression that the pig was unintentionally released?
They don't realize Waters has been releasing the pig for a long while now and the $10,000 reward was a GV publicity stunt?

i happened way too perfect to be unintentional. i didnt know people still thought it was an accident. i never thought it was for a second.
i am curious what material it is made from tho. roger waters strikes me as an environmentally aware type person so i cant imagine it being something that could hurt dolphins or whatever.
also coachella is really close to the palm springs airport. can you imagine landing/taking off and seeing a giant pig just floating along? damn that would have been funny

Attn: people who disliked Roger Waters' set
re: what the fuck is wrong with you
My sentiments exactly. To each his own, I guess, but that was the biggest, baddest show I've ever seen. Roger Waters and Coachella truly spared no expense, and I don't know about everyone else, but it was nothing but love in our section of the polo field. I'll admit, I grew out of my Pink Floyd phase close to ten years ago, towards the end of high school. I know many of us had our teenage stoner years discovering drugs and the whole psychedelic experience, and Pink Floyd has always owned that scene. Since Pink Floyd had broken up long before I ever discovered their music (I consider The Final Cut to be their final album) the closest I ever thought I'd get to seeing any meaningful live version of their music was getting puddled on acid with my friends at the local planetarium's "Pink Floyd Laser Spectacular." Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd get to experience what took place in the desert on Sunday night. Pink Floyd's music was and is revolutionary, visionary, and timeless. Of course the show would have been more exciting and historic if David Gilmour, Rick Wright and Nick Mason were onstage, but Coachella ain't Live 8, egos are egos, and if you had to choose one person to present the Pink Floyd catalogue in concert, how could you not go with Roger Waters? To the thousands of people around me who felt what I felt, I love you all, and I'll take that to the grave as one of the coolest moments of my life. For those of you who weren't feeling it, or never liked Pink Floyd in the first place, I feel sorry for you, and I hope that next year's headliners will be more to your tastes and/or expectations. I feel like I got a lot better deal on my ticket.
Also, I'm beginning to feel like a blow-hard making so many posts on the subject. Consider this The Final Cut. See you all next year.....

Everybody loses. Both performances sucked, especially for that $322.00 ticket. Coachella loses. Bonnaroo didn't just de-throne them this year, they beat the living shit out of them.
Yes, but Bonnaroo if full of dirty hippies. And that always loses.

Ahh, Trent. It takes a big man to admit his mistakes. I take back most of the things I said about you, the people of Hawaii, and your sloppy spelling. Long live Pink Floyd.

I was shrooming my balls off and having a very significant spiritual moment, so if Roger sneaked in a bit of back-track, it was probably a bit over my head - in multiple quadriphonic directions. :laughyou But thanks for pointing it out, Trent, and I'm also glad you enjoyed the show.

For the record, and not that it means a god damn thing, i called there being an airplane/planes involved in waters show.
I dont know how i knew, but i just thought it was something that crazy fucker would throw at us, and fuck was i stoked when that crazy shark faced plane flew over head.

Was he lip synching?
If so, how do you know?
Evidence please.

Daft Punk was amazing, but in terms of spectacle, nothing holds a candle to the Waters show. Nothing. The very definition of spectacular. Others may have had him beat in other ways to other people (Man Man being my top performer for the weekend), but in terms of spectacle, it's never been topped in all the years I've been there.
