Definitely not the strongest of the European lineups. I'm kinda surprised I dont see MBV on the bill.

A little weak so far - I was seriously considering going, as it's the only other festival that I think pays enough attention to electronic music and whose lineup compares to Coachella.

Only Villalobos and maybe Crookers do anything to warrant my attention. Also like Coachella though, Pukkelpop has a history of fantastic additions.

Roskilde is still winning and by a lot. That lineup makes me shiver.

It's the first time i've been to this festival. The first 2 days have been excellent. The lineup above misses off some key acts like Sigur Ros and Soulwax (who are both playing tomorrow). The Flaming Lips were their usual brilliant selves on Thursday. Other highlights so far have included Holy Fuck, The Dodos, Menomena, Los Campesinos!, Blood Red Shoes, Iron And Wine, Caribou, Robyn, Hot Chip, Does It Offend You, Yeah! and Santogold (now with full band).

The waffles are pretty good too.

SO many conflicts in the schedule.... pretty cool how 2manydjs are playing, and 1 hour later, Soulwax on the main stage, AFTER Sigur Ros... so sick. Metallica tonight.... lucky guys.

Santogold (now with full band).

I've been telling a lot of people, she needs to get a full band to take her show to another level. I have a feeling her shows are now fucking HUGE. I say she comes back to Coachella 09. You heard it hear first.

I watched half of the first Metallica song, and then left. Not really my thing, but at least it gets their fans out of their mums basements for the night.

Sushov23
08-16-2008, 01:44 AM
how long do they do when playing their own shows?

paulb
08-16-2008, 01:49 AM
2h - 2.5h always...not less...a short show for them is 1h50min

shortest they would do is 1h58min...

The whole set or just the two songs I mentioned? I'm going to have to shell out the money and go if they're for sure playing Battery and Blackened. I'm a fan of thrash so those are two of my favorite songs from them.

paulb

I just wonder how they will work the lyric "Unforgiven Three" into "Unforgiven Three" the way they did with "Unforgiven Two" by going "Cuz you're unforgiven, toooooooo"

By the way, have I mentioned Pukkelpop is the most explosive thing known to man? Even moreso than explosives.

You've got to give the boys credit that they realize they should only be playing their old stuff in concert.

paulb
08-16-2008, 12:55 PM
exactly, and not a single song off St. Anger, they know how much everyone hates it.... and for that, I wish Metallica the best... they could keep touring for another 15 years, as long as they only do the 1st 5 albums...

Have the Metallica fanboys gone yet? Is it safe to come out?

My Saturday went a bit like this:

Likke Li - Good fun. Even covered Vampire Weekend.

The Whip - A lot heavier live than on CD. Quite enjoyable.

Pivot - Mooted as Australias answer to Battles. Dull as fuck would be more accurate.

Late Of The Pier - Liked the music, but they all looked like twats.

Two Gallants - Best i've seen them. Really enjoyed their set.

Girl Talk - So good that i completely forgot that i planned to leave halfway through to see Yeasayer. He even had Bloc Party dancing on stage with him.

Benga - While everyone tried to cram into a small tent to see MGMT, Benga was rocking an even smaller tent with some rather fine dubstep.

The Dresden Dolls - Good set and some nice theatrics. Missed the end, as i got dragged off to see...

Bloc Party - Massive crowd to see them on the main stage. They started with Mercury and ended with Flux - Everything in between was much better. Put the keyboard away, guys, until you learn how to play it.

Jamie Lidell - Started off promising, but then started trying to be overly smart with his looping, which got a bit repetitive (ho fucking ho). Just as well, as it was off to see.....

Sigur Ros - I was shocked to see a smaller crowd than for Bloc Party. Belgians are indeed a strange bunch. Beautiful set, as always.

M83 - My fave of the day. First time seeing him live, and it blew me away.

Soulwax - Biggest crowd of the weekend (yes, even bigger than Metallicarse) to see a mediocre Nite Versions set. Fled halfway through to see...

Elbow - Always a pleasure. Even on a bad night they piss on most other bands. This was a blinder and still a packed out tent. Loved it.

There was a huge fireworks display at the end of the Soulwax set, which we could see as we walked back to the car. Nice ending to a very good festival. The location is nothing special and it's not cheap, but every band i saw sounded crystal clear (even the shit ones). There was also a nice Moroccan themed chill out area, with mint tea. Nice touch.

I'll add some photos once i've uploaded them.
