In the meantime, David Byrne’s booking agent at William Morris Agency, Mark Geiger, has been soliciting offers from a number of different promoters around the United States for Byrne/Eno live shows, promising the set list will consist of at least 40% Eno-era Talking Heads material. No word yet on if he’s had any takers. Most of the tour is already booked.

ACL and APW seem like the only possibilities. Most festivals have announced their lineups already, and the ones that would book Byrne and Eno (in my opinion) are doing fine with ticket sales. I think APW would be more likely than ACL, I think Brian Eno would have already been announced at ACL if he was playing it.

04.15.2008: Come The Revolution

I expected the mortgage credit crisis to affect the super rich here in NY and around the world, as did many of my friends. We gaze out at the skeletons of condos being erected in every neighborhood, with their toppling cranes and occasional shards of falling glass, and wonder aloud who is going to fill these expensive monstrosities? With the dollar so low, haven’t the Eurorich already bought their pieces of NY real estate? And if there is a financial crisis, doesn’t that mean that hedge fund guys and others whose wealth is based on not making anything will be less flush? Aren’t those guys the intended buyers for these apartments and bachelor pads? We wonder if these condos will end up empty if these guys fall on hard times.

A couple in a restaurant introduce themselves to me. She is a real estate broker mainly in the Upper East Side. So I ask her if there is a downturn in her market, and she says no, not in the slightest. The truly rich are barely affected, she says, and the hedge fund guys make so much money that even if they make ten million less, it’s not all that significant to them. Maybe they will forgo the Miami condo, for now, but this rarefied part of NYC will remain unaffected, so she claims.

Others make similar assertions. A few recent articles mention that the spending of the super rich continues unabated. It’s written about because, like my friends and I, many assume that everyone will be hurt by the falling house of cards. But so far, at least according to these articles, the super rich are immune, and they will go on partying, buying contemporary art and building condos as the bottom falls out for the bottom half of society.

So far, it seems there is some invisible financial dividing line below which low-income homeowners and all the companies that depend on their dollars—the Foot Lockers, Zales, and Office Depots—will go completely bankrupt. This is happening right now, and it’s happening amazingly fast. It’s not just one or two bankruptcies, and not just mom and pop stores on main streets, but huge chains that used to seem invulnerable in their ubiquity. These were the stores that put mom and pop out of business and now they’re going under?

What will happen when half the country is unemployed, with no medical insurance, stuck in a sheet rock house miles from public transportation? They’ll be ripe for religion or revolution if you ask me. Bibles and bullets. Will they still support the billions a day spent in Iraq? I don’t think so—even now they don’t. One would expect they’ll be pretty pissed off watching the rich and famous party endlessly and continue their glamorous lifestyle—or maybe not. Surprising to me, those being duped and exploited by banks and entrepreneurs often envy their “betters”—they want to be that person in the Beemer or Lexus, and will mortgage everything they’ve got to have a symbolic piece of it. Instead of anger and action we get envy—the bane of every outside agitator, union organizer, and young revolutionary.

I remember when MLK decided to tie the Vietnam War in with domestic issues like poverty and racism, and many thought it ill advised. They assumed he would lose some support—there were still some in favor of the Vietnam War at that point—and that it might dilute the focus on jobs, racism, equality and votes.

I think he was right. This stuff is tied together. Katrina and Iraq are not separate issues. The securities and safeguards guaranteed to the super rich by the Bush administration and the credit crisis are probably linked as well. I don’t mean conspiracy linked—the connections and actions don’t have to be premeditated or thought out in advance to make a network. There are organic emergent forces at work, self-organizing systems arising that benefit some and not others. That too sounds complex and conspiratorial, but it’s not.

Torch Song

I don’t often indulge in the usual blog thing of aggregating, i.e. pointing to articles in newspapers and magazines, but there’s a lovely and surprising piece in the NY Times Arts section disguised as yet another article on the China Tibet issue and the Olympic torch relay. The piece points out that the torch relay originated with the Nazis. It was a bit of stagecraft thought up by Carl Diem and filmed by Leni Riefenstahl for her 1938 hymn to Aryan supremacy, Olympia. The Wagnerian imagery is mythic: within a landscape of Greek ruins, a naked and pure human specimen holds a javelin as it is lit by a bowl of fire, and then transports the burning torch to the Rhineland—well, the symbolism is pretty obvious.

from RS:

Earlier this year, former Talking Head David Byrne and super-producer Brian Eno revealed that the duo were working on a new album, with a tour planned for later this year. The first two dates of those shows, billed as “Songs of Talking Heads’ David Byrne and Roxy Music founder Brian Eno,” have popped up. The duo will so far play Atlanta’s Chastain Park Amphitheatre on September 20th and Santa Barbara, California’s Arlington Theatre on October 4th. As the billing indicates, you can expect a fair sampling of Remain in Light as well as some Roxy Music if you’re lucky. As for the pair’s new album, their first collaboration together since 1981’s My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, is expected out later this year.

The highly anticipated but until now unconfirmed David Byrne/Brian Eno is a go. Three dates are on tap so far, beginning Sept. 20 in Atlanta, and also including a Sept. 26 stop at the Austin City Limits festival and an Oct. 4 gig in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The shows are billed as "The Songs of Talking Heads' David Byrne and Roxy Music founder Brian Eno." Fans can expect a wealth of material from the period when the Talking Heads and Eno collaborated closely, including 1980's landmark "Remain in Light," as well as songs from throughout Eno's time with Roxy Music and beyond.

In Atlanta, tickets top out at $48.50, while in Santa Barbara, the most expensive seats are $65.

Byrne and Eno are also working on a new studio album, expected late this year, which Byrne plans to self-release. A comprehensive online strategy will augment the effort, which will be the pair's first project together since 1981's "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts." That album was reissued in expanded form by Nonesuch in 2006.

I'm just hoping the music gods are aware of the slew of shows in late September/early October and provide me with a David Byrne show in Chicago that doesn't interfere with my crowded 3-week run of shows there. Maybe he can just add to it (like Oct. 16-17) and make it a 4-week run...

Byrne and Eno Announce New, Self-Released Album

David Byrne and Brian Eno have finally unveiled the details of their follow-up to My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, 27 years in the making. The "electronic gospel" album is called Everything That Happens Will Happen Today, and the duo will self-release it via everythingthathappens.com.

On August 4, Byrne and Eno will offer the song "Strange Overtones" as a free download via the site. On August 18, the full album will be available for purchase as well as streaming. Regular and deluxe CD editions will follow at a later date, both "enhanced" and including a download. The deluxe package includes artwork by Stefan Sagmeister.

Everything That Happens focuses on Byrne's lyrics and vocals over Eno's electronic tracks; a press release emphasizes that the album is "more a collection of songs" than the soundscapes of My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. Eno elaborated on Byrne's aforementioned "electronic gospel" comment in the press release: "When we started this work, we started to think we were making something like electronic gospel: a music where singing was the central event but whose sonic landscapes were not the type normally associated with that way of singing."

David Byrne has several "Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno" dates coming this fall, with many more on the way. In fact, he's planning shows in support of Everything That Happens across the world and into next year.

Everything That Happens Will Happen Today:

You have no idea how happy this makes me, I knew they were right in your wheelhouse! And although you have to pass up ACL, our Beck experience will be totally worth it. And we'll get a chance to see David soon, he seems to be playing interesting venues/cities, so maybe Miami will be in the cards.

looks good for possible coachella 09:

from billboard.com:

As tipped here last month, David Byrne has revealed plans for a six-month tour celebrating his work with the Talking Heads and in collaboration with producer Brian Eno. With the latter, he will release the new album "Everything That Happens Will Happen Today" on Aug. 18.

The North American portion of the trek will begin Sept. 16 in Bethlehem, Pa., and run through Nov. 8 in Philadelphia. Additional U.S. dates will be scheduled through early 2009, followed by visits to Australasia and Europe.

Fans can sample "Strange Overtones," a tune from "Everything That Happens," as a free MP3 from everythingthathappens.com. The uptempo, electronics-shaded track finds Byrne waxing poetic about the art of songwriting, with lines like "your song still needs a chorus / I know you'll figure it out / the rising of the verses / a change of key will let you out."

they call it electronic gospel, so it's on the mellow, tender side. still a strong album but don't expect anything like the talking heads. tends more byrne's solo albums.

I just saw David Byrne at the Greek. It was amazing...

Thanks to this other site for writing down the set list. I didn't...

It was pretty epic and I love the fact he had these 3 dancers that would do choreographed moves with him on stage.

David Byrne at the Greek Theatre, Oct. 3, 2008

Main set: Strange Overtones / I Zimbra / One Fine Day / Help Me Somebody / Houses in Motion / My Big Nurse / My Big Hands (Fall through the Cracks) / Heaven / ????* / The River / Crosseyed and Painless / Life Is Long / Once in a Lifetime / Life During Wartime / I Feel My Stuff
First encore: Take Me to the River / The Great Curve
Second encore: Home / Burning Down the House
Third encore: Everything That Happens

* I cannot figure out what this one was, though it contains this great lyric: “A thousand words that no one ever knew are filling up the pages of my book.” Is it a new Byrne-Eno outtake? Something from one of the pre-Rei Momo albums that I’ve overlooked? Anyone know?
