michael jackson is decomposing at an alarming rate. he probably can't sing or dance anymore. i know he is planning on attempting...but.

in a celebrity death match bowie v. michael, i think its obvious who would destroy.

Waters and his band sold over 300 million albums, which only the Beatles and Zeppelin have managed to do in terms of rock bands.

Prince is in the 100 million category.

Madonna is in the 300 million category as well, much higher than Prince.

Waters and his songs will be the biggest act that ever played Coachella.

If someone brings up the fact that Prince is gay I always know they don't know what the fuck they are talking about and probably have never listened to a Prince album in their fucking life. Its not his fault he makes your penis tingle, no need to hate the man for it.

yea, so gay.

Prince is dating a set of identical Caribbean twins, it has been claimed.

The Purple Rain singer - who is to play a series of shows at London's The O2 arena starting from this week - has been romantically linked to his backing vocalists, the exotic duo Twinz.

Twinz - who refuse to reveal their real names or ages - won't confirm if their intimate on stage relationship with Prince continues once the show is over.

The stunning singers said teasingly: "Prince is a huge fan of ours. He is someone who likes to have beautiful women around him."

They added: "He is a cool cat, always dressed to impress. And he keeps us laughing all the time." Prince - who has previously been romantically linked to Sheena Easton, Carmen Electra and Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles, has been married twice - to dancer Mayte Garcia and Manuela Testolini.

The diminutive singer is said to have a mesmerising effect on the opposite sex - Kim Basinger's brother was once forced to whisk her away from the singer's house.

Prince, who once described sex as the "most important thing in the world", allegedly requested his Los Angeles hotel penthouse suite was re-carpeted with white shag and decorated with a huge purple Prince logo on the wall for the duration of his stay.

wolverine

fuck that. Prince is 10x the guitarist that Gilmour is and Waters can barely carry a tune.

Prince has said the "Purple Rain" solo was influenced by "Comfortably Numb". Also check out Prince's "Empty Room" for Gilmour influence.

chiapet
04-16-2008, 10:27 AM
Madonna may have sold more albums, but there is no way I'd call her bigger or more important than Prince - he's far more prolific and has crossed into so many genres when you consider both his own records and the work he's written and produced for others. Madonna is just the pop (and wannabe dance) queen.

nationocean
04-16-2008, 10:46 AM
^ that's just blind ignorance.

You are talking about Madonna! Hall of Fame Madonna.. The HIGHEST PAID solo artist in the history of the world Madonna..

She's has more #1 albums and top 40 singles than either Pink Floyd or Prince. look it up..

Doesn't mean Prince or Roger Waters aren't major, but lets not get crazy now..

humanoid
04-16-2008, 10:55 AM
I wasn't aware that top 40 singles or #1 albums were standards that I care about....why don't we have Hootie & the Blowfish play!!! They sold a ton of their debut!!

this is a funny argument....like someone said previously,"what is the definition of bigger here?"

and while I like Prince......Bowie destroys him(I don't care if Prince sold more records)

So - you heard it here first.

2009 Coachella Headliners:

Cure's new record got pushed back to the Fall. Morrissey with a new-ish reecord by then and the Cali-99 Coachella connection.

oh by the way a reunited Talking heads, or Smiths is WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY bigger than Prince.

This is all a matter of perception. As of April 2008, if an act has already played their comeback shows (Police, Waters DSOTM, Pixies) then they won't seem bigger.

Prince seems huge because he's never played an American festival.
Prince is a critical darling... the media loves him.
He is also a huge commercial artist, and last time he played LA he sold out 7 nights at the Staples Center.

Talking Heads can't touch Prince.

Now, the Smiths would be the biggest reunion in Coachella history. Period.

(except Led Zeppelin, but if Led Zep tours this fall, then tries to play Coachella 2009, it will be "tired".)

U2 is bigger, but not as hip. Springsteen also.

That's it. Smiths and Led Zep. Close this thread.

I gots to disagree. As much as I love Prince, MUCH more than the Smiths, a reunited Smiths concert would be a 21-century musical Mecca. I know dozens of people who would kill (literally) to see that. 2009 Coachella Headliners:
R.E.M. (Friday), The Cure/Morrisey (Saturday), David Bowie (Sunday)

Cure's new record got pushed back to the Fall. Morrissey with a new-ish reecord by then and the Cali-99 Coachella connection.

R.E.M. and Bowie cause they haven't played.

that would be pretty sweet for headliners (+ ubiquitious request for Ride n MBVT)

When I heard speculation about Prince being at Coachella, I kinda laughed. I thought omg like totally 80s fer sure! So last week-ish I dug out Purple Rain, the entire album, thinkin upon listening again I'd just laugh... uh no, I marveled in it's greatness........:o uhhhh.... then busted out some of Prince's greatest hits and couldn't stop listening.... let's just say I plan on wearing a purple shirt Saturday to illustrate my solidarity with Prince. :) YAY!

Absolutely no one! Roger Walters, Jack Johnson? Nahhh

Personally, never been a big Prince Fan even though own like 10 of his albums...always felt his production was often thin and really lacking in Punch, but that said, recognize how hugely influential he has been. Still...

1st Off...Floyd is bigger than Prince, way bigger, as in no contest, regardless of what Rolling Stone says...since all Waters is going to be playing are Floyd songs, Waters is bigger than Prince.

2nd, from a sheer quality of overall body of work perspective, Radiohead is best act Coachella has ever booked and there is not even a close second...don't care if Floyd/Waters came before...Radiohead way better..again, a no contest.

first off....it isn't floyd, and just because he's playing a floyd record doesn't mean it's floyd. are you done?

second....this is purely subjective. if we're talking objectively, then NO, you're wrong because prince has sold more albums than radiohead, he's been around longer, and more people know about him. quit with your subjective viewpoints, son.

Believe I made it clear in previous post I wasn't talking sales, but aesthetic quality of overall body of work.

If you're telling me in another 15 years from now the general consensus among rock historians and critics is going to be that Prince was a more important artist than Radiohead you are positively off your rocker.

You've got to have a screw loose to think that Radiohead will be more important than Prince. As much as I love Radiohead and recognize how much they've influenced music already, Prince has done so much for pop music (and musicianship in general) that it's impossible to compare the two.

Again, I'm not trying to win the household name argument, you're arguing Big = overall sales and popularity with the masses, I'm arguing Big = overall aesthetic quality of the body of work/critical reputation/ artistic impact. From my standpoint both artists are huge, but ultimately, I feel the overall artistic quality of Radiohead's body of work is superior to Prince's more prolific but far less consistent output, and that their influence on future artists will be greater in the end (though Prince has no doubt been a huge influence on a number of Hip Hop acts).

Remember, after Dylan, Beatles, Stones, James Brown, Hendrix, maybe even ahead of them, the most influential rock and roll band of all time was the Velvet Underground, and 98% of the English speaking population still doesn't know who they were...doesn't make them any less "Big" in terms of their impact on rock 'n' roll.

And Hendrix died 38 years ago, not approx 15...that would be Stevie Ray Vaughn

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND? MOST INFLUENTIAL ROCK AND ROLL BAND OF ALL TIME?...........................that's debatable to say the very least.

Debatable, sure, but a very common discussion among anyone whose truly been following the full spectrum of Rock n' Roll as it's developed over the last 50 years.

But don't take my word for it. Take Rolling Stones. They start their review of the Velvets in the latest version of the their Record Guide, with a quote that goes something like this..

"The most influentail band in rock n' roll history...this one, hands down."

I paraphrase, but I promise that is the exact gist of their opening statement.

Prince has cancelled his show at Dublin’s Croke Park next Monday. Per promoters MCD, 55,161 tickets were sold for this show (by the way, this is the first time I’ve ever seen a major promoter give a ticket tally like this for a show). The reason for the cancellation is given as “due to reasons beyond the control of PRINCE and MCD Productions”...

Croke Park has an 80,000 capacity, Prince couldn't sell it out so he pulled it. And fair enough, U2 is playing to the home crowd and all, but they were able to sell Croke out a few nights running, not so long ago...

Wow, that's pretty pathetic. Boyzone and that cunt Celine can sell the place out but Prince can't.

Shitty that the show was canned though. I wonder how the sales for Neil Young and Clapton are doing. They're expensive tix too .... ~80Euro apiece iirc.

Best comment ever on Prince canceling in Dublin.

"I have today decided to become a concert promoter. In the summer of 2009 I plan to put on the greatest live show on earth in, say, the Phoenix Park. The gig will be headlined by U2, with support from Paul McCartney, a reformed Led Zep, a reformed Pink Floyd and a reformed Stone Roses. The line-up shall ensure that I get extensive funding from the financial markets, despite the credit crunch. With this funding (and advanced ticket sales earning me a nice sum of interest) I shall treat myself to an elaborate lifestyle for the next 12 months, essentially an extensive slush fund for my every whim. I shall cancel this gig the day before, due to unforeseen circumstances, give no explanation and walk away. Prince, you said that you never meant to cause us any sorrow, or pain. MCD, could you not just have pulled in Outkast for the day who, let's be fair, have been a Prince tribute act for the last 10 years. Today, you will realise that this is what it sounds like, when dubs cry. - Des"

To play Devil's Advocate though many of those 90's alternative acts faded with changing trends as the rest of their peers did while Radiohead launched themselves into the new millennium with not only a startling shift of style in relation to their past but with the direction of all music at the time as well. Prince will indeed be seen as iconic and revolutionary because in his heyday he was, however I don't think one should nix out Radiohead just yet. They may be waning in the public interest category somewhat yet the things that they do in music distribution, recording technique, and (as much as hate to prattle on about the subjects) political and environmental subjects. Take that for what it's worth but I personally believe that Prince will fade as a product of his generation faster than Radiohead will.

The Beatles were bigger than Prince, (you might even say they were bigger than Jesus) but not nearly as stylish. Bowie > Prince
U2 > Prince (general public?)
Michael Jackson > Prince
Paul McCartney > Prince
Billy Joel =<> Prince
Led Zeppelin > Prince
The Prodigy > Prince :)

The perpetually-frustrated-with-woman-problems Billy Joel vs. Prince, the man who impregnates women just by looking at them? No contest.

Seriously, though, why do you say Billy Joel could even possibly be bigger than Prince?

Prince continues to chart his own course
By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP Music Writer Nekesa Mumbi Moody, Ap Music Writer Thu Oct 23, 12:09 pm ET
NEW YORK At a celebration/concert for Prince's new book, late night had turned into early morning, the bar was closing and party organizers were deciding what decorations to pack up first.

But Prince was still on stage and still captivating the exclusive group of about 200 fans who had gathered in an intimate penthouse loft to hear him perform.

Though he had taken about a two-hour break between sets, Prince was entering hour four in what would become a nearly five-hour musical extravaganza that not only included his own seminal hits like "Purple Rain" and "Little Red Corvette," but also interpretations of music from Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, The Rolling Stones and even Janet Jackson and India.Arie for good measure. (Fans paid $1,000 for the first jam session and $300 for the second: Proceeds went to charity.)

It's this kind of magic that Prince tried to capture with "21 Nights," a glossy coffee-table book published by Simon & Schuster that documents the glamorous rocker during his record-breaking, 21-night run at London's 02 Arena last year. The book not only steals glimpses of his onstage performances, but also behind-the-scenes moments of the star and his band during the unprecedented concert stint.

"No one had ever sold out 21 nights in a row," said photographer Randee St. Nicholas. "So I thought, 'We should do a book surrounding this point in his life, because this is a great point in his life.'"

While his three-decades-long career has been meticulously chronicled, Prince is quick to point out, "Not by me never by me. That's someone else who's on the outside looking in." This time, it's Prince with St. Nicholas telling the story, through his own frame of reference.

"This was a landmark event," says Prince, sitting on the rooftop with the Manhattan skyline as his backdrop during a break from rehearsals before the evening's musical marathon. "No one believed that it would do what it did. ... Everyone tried to talk me out of it."

Of course, Prince is used to proving skeptics wrong. These days, he's regarded as a pioneer for artists' rights and known for releasing music over the Internet. But when he left his longtime label Warner Bros. nearly two decades ago after a protracted battle over his creative path, and abandoned major record labels to release music on his own, he left everyone from fans to musician insiders wondering if he had lost his mind.

In recent years, he has re-linked with major record labels like Sony and Universal Music Group to release his albums, but isn't sure any record is worth putting out in this era of piracy and illegal downloads. Though the book includes a CD, it contains no new songs, just classic hits and other songs from one of his signature jam sessions.

"Today, it's not realistic to expect to put out new music and profit from it. There's no point in trying to put new music out there and keep it from being (exploited)," he says.

And he now has disdain for the way the Internet has, in his view, subverted artists' rights.

"The powers that be are abusing the copyright infringement," he says. "You can't sample Steven Spielberg; you don't see his stuff up there, just old tapes of the Ohio Players, who can't afford to defend themselves."

But while Prince exudes hints of frustration, he's hardly bitter: These days, serenity and good-natured fun seem to be his mantra.

Though he professes shyness, the diminutive artist gives a warm hug as a welcome, and during his show which had Spike Lee, Anderson Cooper and Dave Chappelle in the audience he had fans laughing as he cracked jokes throughout (among his more memorable was referring to himself as Rihanna, an allusion to Internet gossip that the statuesque singer had been mistaken for Prince).

St. Nicholas, a longtime friend, says Prince's conversion to the Jehovah's Witness faith several years ago has helped him evolve into a more spiritual person and a more open one, in comparison with his reputation as a moody recluse. But Prince's public image has never been the real Prince that friends see behind closed doors, she adds.

"He's shy. But he doesn't necessarily hide or shield himself and attempt this mysterious persona that he has," she says of the twice-divorced star.

"You know children? You never know what they are going to do one minute to the next? ... That's very much how he is," she explains. "In a way it's very open, because if you can just hang in that moment with him, and just go for it you're not worrying about the past."

And at times, Prince isn't even consumed with the present. While he talked about biblical implications to the recent stock market plunge ("that's why I had to bring back this song," he says as his band rehearses "1999" in the background), when it comes to a recent milestone, he's decidedly nonchalant.

"How old are we really?" asks Prince, who turned 50 in June. "It's about ascension. It's not the other way. There's nothing down about it. Everything is better."

As an example, he points to the 21-night run in London: "I couldn't have sold out 21 nights in London in the peak of my career; it would have been an impossibility," he says.

"I look forward to these years where everything is just open sky. I wish this for every artist: freedom."

I would like to think its Space Oddity....

When I saw him, he opened with Life on Mars, just him and a piano.
