I got a newsletter from them saying they have a big announcement this thursday...wonder what it is.

These fests keep trying to one up eachother.

Um I think it's called taking vacation time. I'm pretty sure (since they only sell weekend passes) that promoters are assuming anyone who is willing to pay for a ticket, flight out to Manchester and the whole works, is arranging for vacation time off work. It's in the middle of Tennessee on a farm, not like it's just a weekend trip for most folks.

rideincircles
04-14-2008, 10:42 PM
Led Zeppelin is highly unlikely. Right now the biggest rumor is Eric Clapton since hes touring with Robert Randolph who is at Bonnaroo, and with BB King there that ups the potential also. A superjam with BB King Eric Clapton and bunch of others would be phenomenal. Bonnaroo willl definitely drop something crazy i bet.
Coachella definitely pulled some major shit near the end this year, but its too expensive to roadtrip easily on a moments notice. At Bonnaroo about 99% of people road trip there, you dont leave once inside, and need four days of supplies and a bunch of vacation days. The camping is nuts. And you can walk back and forth to your campsite all day. For that it has Coachella beat, along with latenight sets.

Backwater
04-14-2008, 10:59 PM
I'm sorry but Bonnaroo fucking sucks. I've been to every Bonnaroo except the first two. Even though the lineup gets better every year, it seems to get less and less fun every year. All AC/Superfly (the promoters) care about is making money, they could not care less about the festival going experience. I find it hilarious that people complain about the heat at Coachella. Dry heat and humidity are completely different things and humidity is 10000X worse.

It's probably just going to be an annoucement involving some new event where you can spend money..

The big annoucement, the waste your time lounge sponsored by AT&T, Microsoft, Taco Bell, Herbal Essence, Sony & Budweiser.

In all truth it will probably be a replacement for the Allman brothers but I doubt it will be anyone epic.

Bonnaroo's idea of epic is no where near my concept of epic. I can't really explain it anymore than that.

Having a jam session with a bunch of ex members of has been bands doesn't really equal epic to me.

Now if they did get Eric Clapton, that would be pretty cool.

I bought a passcode off of ebay for $200, then bought two tickets. It was actually kind of an ordeal, because the promoter, Harvey Goldsmith, was threatening to invalidate all passcodes that didn't match the ballot winners. That didn't end up happening, so my tickets were valid.

I HIGHLY doubt it's Phish.

First of all, Trey got busted recently for driving around with a pharmacy in his car. Oxycontin, Morphine, Heroin .. everything.

Second, why wouldn't they just do their own festival and make WAY more money than Bonnaroo would ever even think about paying them?

I'm pretty sure they'd make just a little bit more with another Coventry than a Bonnaroo appearance.

Many of the boards were angry about Metallica being there...

And confused as to why Jack Johnson was headlining over Phil Lesh.

Maybe adding Widespread, moving Jack Johnson and adding Les Claypool is an effort to calm the core fans...

I don't know but they definitely shouldn't have said Big Announcement coming because the people on the board were talking about Roger Waters, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin among others.

When you say big announcement you are bound to disappoint.

I usually have short term memory loss so..

I go since I live nearby and have friends to stay with. It's not as bad as it's made out to be but compared to Coachella, it is. I couldn't miss catching Bjork again last year (couldn't believe that my idiot friends went to The Killers instead). I still can't get over the fact that Widespread Panic is a big deal in some circles. I didn't know this until a couple years ago. In the early 90's, I always thought they were a local band, because they used to play this bar in my town every few months. When they stopped playing there, I just thought they had disappeared. Then I find out 10 years later that they are big stars on the hippie circuit. I can't name you one album or even song.

It's so weird how there are such different musical worlds out there.

Music isn't all just about popularity man.

I feel obligated to defend Widespread Panic because I'm a huge fan. I'm also a musician myself (a drummer) so that probably has something to do with it. WP may not be the most "hip" band but they are great musicians and to some people, that's really what counts.

Yeah, I know almost nothing about Widespread Panic, except that I can't for the life of me understand how they're a headliner. And I consider myself relatively well versed in the jam band world.

Two other notes: Jack Johnson's just playing the one set, filling in for the Allmans.

Also: the Allman Bros suck. I saw them 5 years ago, the entire show felt like one extended guitar solo. Impressive guitar playing, but it got old after 15 minutes and I couldn't really tell when they were playing individual songs. I don't think they even played "Jessica." Lame.

I was gonna guess the Black Crowes would make people happy. I don't understand why you would advertise and hype an announcement. Seems like Coachella does it the best way. Here's the lineup and don't expect anything else and then BOOM they drop a bomb on you that makes half the attendees cum in their pants. :)

Lesson learned Bonnaroo, don't hype. If you didn't announce this as a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT and you just randomly announced today that Widespread was going to be there, the reaction is entirely different. some people are really happy and others don't care. Instead you have a bunch of disgruntled hippies.
