Ok, i was having this discussion with Rage Patton the other day, and we pretty much narrowed it down to

One
Fade To Black
Orion
Master of Puppets
Battery

now...fuck, which is the almighty best Metallica song? Its so god damn hard to pick... any other suggestions of which should be added to the list? Which is the best?

I think overall One and Orion would have to top the list... but fuck, this is hard...

PS: dont need any hating in this thread.

puppets, with battery a close second. puppets is more of an epic song, but battery just pounds your face into the ground from start to finish.

i think im gonna go listen to that whole album now.

It's One.

That song is the perfection of everything they were doing with their mixture of thrash metal, acoustic/soft interludes, insane guitar solos and political themes from the first four albums. There are so many points on there where you can just hear the brilliance on display. I love Metallica, and I would say that's the best track. ...And Justice For All doesn't get enough credit, usually. It's an amazing album.

Why no Enter Sandman?

I honestly couldn't pick any one out of those. One was pretty much derived from Fade to Black but I think overall One is the better song. Master is good in its own way. Tough choice, why is this not a poll?

i think i just overlook One cuz it was so played out. it is pretty sick though. justice is definetely a great album, one of their best, but puppets is their best album, imo.

seriously? i dont even rank this anywhere close to one of their best songs...like not by a mile. blackened is up there though for sure.

Damage Inc is really fuckin awesome aswell...but we narrowed it down to 5... Seek and Destroy does not make the cut either...Sandman? fits in with the St. Anger argument...

dont forget the 4 horseman.

What about the acoustic version they butchered on the re-load tour...wasn't there myself, but heard about it. My friend got up and left after that...

METALLICA BLOWS CHUNKS now...

As far as old Metallica goes, pre-Black album...

One or Puppets has to be the best, imo.

From that list, I would go with One. But my personal favorite is For Whom The Bell Tolls. I can't wait to see them at Bonnaroo. I've never seen them before and, from what I hear, the majority of the show consists of songs from the first 5 albums.

A couple songs that haven't been mentioned:

Wherever I May Roam
Until It Sleeps
The Memory Remains
Sanitarium

I actually think Sanitarium is their best song.

Holy hell, you need to reevaluate yourself there guy. Metallica, while not the progenitors of thrash, were certainly the best example of that fantastic metal genre, and their first four albums are absolutely essential.

Slayer were faster and more intimidatingly fast, but Metallica were the more proficient. They were the best of the thrash bands, and time will prove that Metallica is more adamantly supported than Slayer.

It has some good songs, but I prefer my rock bands to have bass players. That no bass player experiment they did with Justice didn't work too well, IMO.

Specifically The Unnamed Feeling.

Maybe because I learned to disregard James's voice.

what are you talking about?

sacleonard
04-12-2008, 07:44 AM
what are you talking about?

"...Justice" was an exercise in rhythm guitar, and the bass is noticeably mixed down on the entire CD. Even James says so...

I still like the CD... just explaining what the other poster probably meant. The Cliff-era material had a better balance, and they over-corrected the bass later in Jason's stay with the band.

The bass is mixed in so low on that album that it might as well not be there.

I know that Jason Newsted is credited with playing bass on that album, but I sure as hell can't hear it.

Kind of like the vocals on most of the tracks of MBV's Loveless. It might as well be an instrumental album.

I hate shitty mixing.

If this were a poll I'd vote for "Master of Puppets."

That was the first heavy/speed metal album I heard. I really liked "Orion" but I wasn't a fan of the rest; I wasn't ready for James' voice, a fact which cracks me up sitting here 20 years later.

Loveless was mixed that way on purpose. Shields wanted the voice to exist as just another instrument. And the lyrics aren't the important part of that music anyway. It is about the sound.

Some people like melodic hard rock more than thrash.

Believe it or not, Metallica has actually written some good songs since 1991. Load/Reload each have 5-6 killer tracks, and even St. Anger has 3-4 good ones.
