I just got the call yesterday that I'm going to be getting a radio show here in Santa Cruz at KZSC. It's called "Wandering Stars", and it's going to be (as you guessed it) primarily a trip-hop, downtempo electronica show. The show will be on Sunday mornings at 3am till' 6am (it's a bitch, but next quarter I'll have a better time slot), so if you feel like chilling out after a long night of partying on your Saturday nights, turn on 88.1 FM (if you're in the Santa Cruz, San Jose or San Benito counties) OR stream online @ http://www.kzsc.org/. I'll update this page when I go on air, to remind you to listen in. Also, I figure the few British folk on here might actually be awake enough to enjoy it too. Thanks.

You are into trip-hop and downtempo?

PassiveTheory
04-10-2008, 11:00 AM
Yeah. You've got your Portishead, your Massive Attack, Tricky, Morcheeba, Supreme Beings of Leisure, Thievery Corporation, Zero 7, Lamb, etc., etc.

Plus, with a 3 hour block, I'm probably going to play some calming indie music in between too, like some Jeff Buckley, some Magnetic Fields, etc.

Congrats, my old roomate used to have a show on KZSC, it was on in the morning. It was fun going on his show drunk as fuck from the night before.

04-10-2008, 11:31 AM
So what happens when you run out of music after your second show?

luckyface
04-10-2008, 11:51 AM
Do you supply the music or do they have it all there?

I'd be willing to be a consultant if you need it. I think if you are going to have the "mainstream" downtempo, you might run out of material pretty quickly.

PassiveTheory
04-10-2008, 02:01 PM
I can supply my own, or use the really fucking huge library. We have enough electronic music to last me a long while.

And once I run out of material on my 2nd show, I'll just, you know, do talk radio for three straight hours. =D

paulb
04-10-2008, 02:02 PM
Ill listen, if you promise to throw in Brass Monkey...

PassiveTheory
04-10-2008, 04:47 PM
Trip hop... Not hip hop. lol

bballarl
04-10-2008, 04:49 PM
Why not just play all types of music?

PassiveTheory
04-10-2008, 04:51 PM
I can't, they want formatted shows. I don't make the rules, they do.

luckyface
04-10-2008, 04:51 PM
What you should do is just have Groove Salad play and pretend like you are selecting the music.

Best Internet radio station ever.

Heh, I actually LIKE picking music out and stuff... So no.

I had a rap show on kzsc. you technically have a theme but I was playing filly and the wall on that bitch. thanks for doing a downtempo show, I think kzsc would cause a black hole if there was one more shitty indie show with wack DJs.

PassiveTheory
04-10-2008, 05:23 PM
You don't by chance know Thomas Dende here at school, Trick... do you?

And yeah, I proposed a trip hop/electronica show, but I plan on playing Spiritualized, Daniel Johnston, Interpol, My Bloody Valentine, Death Cab for Cutie, and Jeff Buckley, among other things.

Special show for everyone this Sunday morning: Gonna play Portishead's Third in it's entirety.

Certainly. If you want a lighter vibe, Staunton Lick or Space Walk.

Otherwise, maybe 64 AKA Go or Return to Patagonia. Bonus points if you play Baby Battle Scratch. I can hook you up with that one. It doesn't get much more fun than that.

And what albums of the three artists you just named do you have access to?

On vinyl? I can't remember much... I think the Massive Attack vinyl records were for singles like Angel, Special Cases, and something else. The Gus Gus record was for a single, fuck me if I can remember the name... And the DJ Shadow vinyl is the Live! In Tune and On Time disc.

This just reminds me that I have NOTHING by Lemon Jelly... Christ.

I do have pride in my work, I also know that I've got plenty to learn.

You also say that as if every person who works at the radio station is like you. People, even at a college radio station, really don't know about trip-hop, the only popular context I can ever connect on (when asked "what is trip-hop?") with people is the likes of Massive Attack ("Ever watch House?"), Thievery Corporation or Zero 7 ("Own the Garden State Soundtrack?").

stinkbutt
05-04-2008, 11:44 PM
It's not as though "trip-hop" is hard to find. Look I'm not blaming shit on you, but there have been so many times I've watched you flame people on this board for a simple thing i.e. listening to Slayer. I listen to a lot of shit you flame people for, but while you sit there on your high horse (because "this isn't the Warped Tour") you don't take into consideration we've been here longer and have most likely seen more. I just find it funny when you of all people make fun of musical tastes when your nuts hadn't even dropped by the time Beth Gibbons sang "It's A Five".

PassiveTheory
05-04-2008, 11:51 PM
Given my means of obtaining music, what with the library being limited in the extent that there isn't that much non-dance electronic music, torrents being blocked for the wireless, and the fact that, yeah, just over a year ago I had never heard of Portishead, I have a ways to go before becoming a "master" or what you will, of the genre and that, especially in comparison to other types of music (indie rock, metal), it is comparably more difficult to obtain music for my show.

That being said, I'm not flaming anybody's taste on here, just asking to lend your ears once every Sunday morning and to help me put on the best show possible.

NicoDread
05-04-2008, 11:57 PM
the only popular context I can ever connect on (when asked "what is trip-hop?") with people is the likes of Massive Attack ("Ever watch House?"), Thievery Corporation or Zero 7 ("Own the Garden State Soundtrack?").

I know 100% what you are saying right here. It's even worse in high school, everybody is too busy listening to Lil Wayne and Linkin Park to even care about trip-hop/downtempo. I enjoyed your show, even the most obvious trip-hop is still better than most other music. I agree with stinkbutt if only for the fact that the show would be perfect if you had a wide variety of artists to play, but hey that's why we're all helping you out right? I mean I know that I couldn't even begin to do a radio show on a genre that I wasn't extremely familiar with, so major props to you.

PassiveTheory
05-05-2008, 12:00 AM
I like doing the trip hop/ambient downtempo show... But like, if I was going to do a show that was something I knew EVERYTHING about, it'd end up being an indie rock show... or a Morrissey/Smiths show... And nobody wants that.

That shit's boring.

Honestly, with my show, I'm trying to emulate a show from back home called Big Sonic Chill that wasn't necessarily trip-hop focused... But was late at night, involved electronic artists, and was just cool.

EDIT: FUCK YOU, ROT IN HELL GUY, FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.

Im posting here temporarily to clear up this angel like reputation of Benjamin Muller. He was nothing more than a piece of shit spoiled arrogant ****** fucking asshole who was accused of RAPE 3 TIMES but because he was from the richest family in town he never got any kind of trouble. One of the victims is my girlfriend and since he was Bi and couldn't find a dude to fuck in such a small town he decided to take out his anal aggressions on his 15 year old girlfriend without asking, without a warning, and without any kind of lube. I also personally knew one of the other victims and she confirmed she was anally raped as well, this guy got what he deserved for ruining GOOD peoples lives and it pisses me off that you all seem to think he was some great nice guy. If you knew him you know he did more drugs than anybody and this was bound to happen eventually, i wasn't surprised at all, in fact i was delighted to hear my girlfriends anal rapist was dead, and if it were someone else who OD'd he would be blasting them right now for not knowing what they were doing. Hey man. Sorry I've missed your show. I just saw this thread. I read your tracklists though, and you've been playing some great shit. It seems like there's a lot of great stuff that would fit that's being ignored though. Well, I dunno, you've only done two shows.. but maybe think about 'Is Jesus Your Pal?' by Gus Gus, some DJ Shadow, Emilie Simon, maybe Grand Popo Football Club, uhm.. Prefuse 73, Tortoise, Mogwai and Royksopp? You should definatley play Bjork. Also Plaid. But, dude.. BJORK. And.. if it were my radio station, I would throw in some Sade and maybe some Edith Piaf, just so everyone would know what was up.

Anyway, good luck to you man. You're going a great service to society.

PassiveTheory
05-09-2008, 01:55 AM
I've totally neglected DJ Shadow, which is a fucking crime, but getting a hold of a good copy of Endtroducing or his work with UNKLE seems to be fucking impossible.

You'll also learn that I'm not a huge fan of Bjork but at some point I'll play something off of Post.

I've played Royksopp on both shows, played Plaid too. Mogwai seems to fit better with all the indie rock shows more so than my show, I'll get around to some Sade and Tortoise, but Edith Piaf? Well, one of the other girls in the class I took for DJ position has a show on Mondays in the same slot and plays exclusively French music... so I've basically decided not to play Edith Piaf because it's kind of her thing.

But she bitched at me for playing AIR... Fuck that shit, I'm gonna play AIR be they French or not.

EDIT: The other bands I either don't listen to or haven't heard of.

EDIT EDIT: Think someone can upload a torrent onto rapidshare for me? It'd of Conjure One's entire discography... lol.

Right on. Matmos.. well, if you don't like Bjork, then you probably aren't interested in Matmos. They produced a lot of the tracks on some of her earlier albums. Sun Ra is this acid jazz band that sort of inspired a lot of the music we're talking about, kinda... I was exhausted at the end of the 1st day last year, too (also my first year). But I found a 2nd wind during her show and found myself finally understanding her. I'm betting if you had had energy and had seen her full show in the right setting, you would feel the same way about her music now.

PassiveTheory
05-09-2008, 12:31 PM
I don't really hate Bjork, it's more of a thing that sometimes her vocals annoy me. Which is funny given that I ADORE a lot of like-vocal artists (i.e. Beth), but whatever.

But I also understand how you found your second wind. My dogs were fucking killing me (I sprained one of my toes a bit) on Sunday but, like, during Dark Side of the Moon and during Justice's set I found myself lifted up again. Crazy shit.

In all honesty I probably would have seen DJ Shadow if I had had my wits about me. Then again... I remember he was playing just his new record, so maybe not...

Just to let you all know, the staff elections were held last Wednesday and I was elected to be the RPM (electronic music) director! So... I'll be talking to record labels and record distributors about CDs and getting more music at the station.

Also, for all you would-be electronic musicians, if you have some air-able material, lemme know and I can possibly get you some airplay.

Just don't send me crappy stuff.
