But I'm good at being uncomfortable so I can't stop changing all the time

Also, I wanted to tell you, the scene where Jeff starts the song at the piano, bathed in the spotlight, and then the bands lurches in and the beachball starts bouncing is clearly inspired by a Bad Company song. I THINK it's Bad Company anyway. I will have to go look for it.

Steely Dan. Still. Seriously, it's like my life story. So good and sad and validating all at the same time.
In the morning, you go gunning
For the man who stole your water
And you fire till he is done in
But they catch you at the border
And the mourners are all singing
As they drag you by your feet
But the hangman isn't hanging
And they put you on the street
You go back, jack, do it again
Wheel turning round and round
You go back, jack, and do it again
Well, you know she's no high climber
Then you find your only friend
In a room with your two-timer
And you're sure you're near the end
Then you love a little wild one
And she brings you only sorrow
All the time you know she's smiling
You'll be on your knees tomorrow
Yeah, you go back, jack, do it again
We'll turn it round and round
You go back, jack, and do it again
Now you swear and kick and beg us
That you're not a gambling man
Then you find you're back in Vegas
With a handle in your hand
Your black cards can make you money
So you hide them when you're able
In the land of milk and honey
You must put them on the table
You go back, jack, do it again
Wheel turning round and round
You go back, jack, and do it again
Perfect.

What am I, speaking Swahili here? Steely Dan. I would go with the two that I recommended already, plus maybe "Reeling In The Years" and "Hey Nineteen". That's a good start. Trust me, you already know these songs. I don't know, you might not really like them at first because you're not in the target age group, but then again I have faith in your taste. I also heard the new Teddy Thompson is very good, but I haven't bought it yet. Waiting till payday. Goddamned budget this month. Do they have new releases on emusic? I also heard a record called "Songbird" by someone named Eva Cassidy at a dinner party last week. I enjoyed it very much. There was wine though.
Do you have any Pogues yet? That seems like something that would be right up your alley.
Hannahrain
08-08-2007, 09:21 PM
They generally have new releases, but not the Teddy Thompson. They have one album of Eva Cassidy and Chuck Brown, but I might already have it somewhere. I have plenty of Pogues. I'll look further into Steely Dan. I don't know much of it.
Edit. Steely Dan selection is abysmal. Lame.

Also, just thinking of stuff from this thread that I admired recently:
Warren Zevon. "Werewolves of London" though.
The Zombies "Care Of Cell 44"
You just pick up single tracks right? If so, try these:
Love "Alone Again Or"
Arthur Lee (Lead singer of Love) "Everybody's Gotta Live"
Syndicate Of Sound "Little Girl"
Flying Burrito Brothers "Sin City"
The Byrds "You Ain't Going Nowhere" (awesome Bob Dylan cover)
The Kinks "Ape Man", "Set Me Free", "Picturebook" (anything from The Kinks really)
The Faces "Ooh La La" (a must)
Rod Stewart "Every Picture Tells A Story" (or anything from that album)
Sorry to go all moldy oldies on you. You'll have to ask the kids for the modern stuff. I liked the Go! Team record though. And the ones I gave you are all pretty choice.
How's the Nina Simone? I'm somewhat of an expert there and could probably help you with track selection if you want. Some of it's hit or miss.
Oh wait, you meant you were listening to that now. Oh well, whatever.

The Veils - Nux Vomica (on Nux Vomica)
This album is interesting. I am listening because they are playing the Paper Heart on Monday. The album is at times a little overwrought but the more carefully wrought songs are less intruiging. This will likely be a game time decision; I am leaning further towards going than I was before listening to this album this afternoon.
The band is fronted by Finn Andrews who is the son of Barry Andrews who was in XTC and other such bands.

They were a mod group. From Scotland I believe. Released a few singles, a full-length, opened for bigger groups, and then dissolved before they could really make an impact. This album is their first record plus 7 bonus tracks. If you would like, I can Yousendit the record to you in the near future. It's quite good.

I have listened to the two full-length albums with a band in the box set. Black Ram is the strongest thus far, but Nashville Moon is good. Black Ram is much more Crazy Horse, and a bit darker...Nashville Moon is country-fied, but still not country.

Just finished the last two discs of Sojourner. Sun Session was a good EP...kind of a mix of the dark, spacious mood of Black Ram and the groove of Nashville Moon. The last disc, Shohola, is just Molina with an acoustic guitar, his voice, and tape hiss. Not as haunting as I expected, but soft, spare and beautiful.

Had to sell my ass on Fremont street
