Stef mentioned it in the 2008 albums thread, but it needs one of its own.

Seldom Seen Kid, by Elbow is just magnificent. It is, without a doubt, better than In Rainbows for me - which is high praise indeed.

The lead single, Grounds For Divorce is a glam/Zeppelin stomper that's gonna sound fuckin' killer live in April.
Guy Garvey's songwriting just gets more mature and more melodic with every release - lines like "we kiss like we invented it", and "I'm asking you to back a horse that's good for glue".
And on the standout track "One Day Like This", Elbow have a track as good as "Fugitive Motel". I know I'm prodding the bear with a stick to suggest that it might be better than In Rainbows, but it just is.

It just is...

maturity eh? Not a big Elbow fan, but I'll check this one out. A couple people seem pretty strong-willed about it.

This is a bold statement Mr. Co-Pilot!

No, it's not. But I'm downloading it to listen and find out if it comes close.

I poke a finger in the eye of bold statements.

Wait a minute, you make that comment before listening to it?

Prejudge much?

You've always had impeccable taste. I think In Rainbows is great. Need to take a listen to Elbow.

Agreed Mr co-pilot. This is a beautiful album. When I first heard Starlings, I was blown away.

On first listen it's a little schmaltzy. A lot of the melodic content is at best a little corny and at worst absolutely ridiculous. I'm a gonna give it a couple more full listens though. Stuff like this normally takes a while to grow on me. There were a couple songs I dug though.

Radiohead has been my favorite band for 13 years or so....but I don't dig In Rainbows much at all....I swear they created it in their sleep, that's the reason they released it on such short notice, and practically gave it away...to get it out of the way! Most of those songs had been done for at least a couple years...
I've been in love with Elbow since Asleep in the Back...but haven;t been into the last couple albums....I've been dying for them to come back strong though, I can't wait to hear it

Ugh. How you end up with that conclusion if you've been a fan... ugh.

Who knows, but it still doesn't change the fact that, as much as I like In Rainbows (and I do), IMO Seldom Seen Kid is a better album, lyrically and melodically.

lyrically and melodically.

I don't think so at all. These are two very different melodic albums, with In Rainbows ultimately being more interesting and complex, although maybe not as diverse. Lyrically I don't see how you can find this album better, while In Rainbows is probably my least favorite album lyrically by them since OK Computer, I think it's head and shoulders above the Elbow album in terms of subtlety and avoidance of cheap one liners.

oooh, I'm looking forward to this one. I liked their last one a lot, and they kicked ass on their last US tour. shame they're not at coachella. I still need to buy tickets for their bimbos show though.

Ugh. How you end up with that conclusion if you've been a fan... ugh.

i didn't try to, it just happened....its okay though, I'll live.....I still have high hopes for their future output...

I just feel like it didn't take much effort, since I saw Radiohead play almost all the songs live a year and a half before they released the album....it seemed like the songs had been completed, lying around and they decided to get them out of the way...hopefully for their next masterpiece

just because I love them, doesn't mean I find them infallible

but it's also possible that In Rainbows may still continue to grow on me with future listenings

ok. having given it a few listens, I approve. it's not better than in rainbows, but it's got some good shit. tracks 4 through 10 are especially satisfying. I think 'some riot' is currently my favorite. though I keep coming back to 'on a day like this'.

who is the guest vocalist on 'the fix' then?

it's Richard Hawley. what a cool guest.

Elbow are great - they played a great set at Coachella, back in 02 or 03? I can't remember, but I remember it being great, esp when they played Powder Blue.

I plant the kind of kiss
that wouldn't wake a baby
on the self-same face
that wouldn't let me sleep;
and the street is singing with my feet,
and the dawn gives me a shadow I know to be taller.

All down to you, dear.
Everything has changed.

My sorry name
has made it to graffiti.
I was looking for
someone to complete me.
Not anymore, dear;
everything has changed.

When we make the moon our mirror ball
the street's an empty stage;
the city sirens - violins.
Everything has changed.

So lift off love.
(down to you, dear)
Lift off love.
(down to you, dear)

We took the town to town last night.
We kissed like we invented it
And now I know what every step is for:
to lead me to your door.

Know that while you sleep,
everything has changed.

We made the moon our mirror ball.
The street's an empty stage;
the city sirens - violins.
Everything has changed.
Everything has changed.
Everything has changed.

Down to you, dear/So lift off love
Down to you, dear/ lift off love
Down to you, dear/ lift off love
Down to you, dear/ lift off love
Down to you, dear/ lift off love
Down to you, dear/ lift off love
Down to you, dear/ lift off love
Down to you, dear...

He'll have to go
So, too, the bunch he luncheons with
It's second on my list of things to do

At the top I'm stopping by
Your place of work and acting like
I haven't dreamed of you and I
And marriage in an orange grove
You are the only thing in any room you're ever in
I'm stubborn, selfish and too old.

I sat you down and told you how
the truest love that's ever found
Is for oneself
You pulled apart my theory
With a weary and disinterested sigh

So yes I guess I'm asking you
To back a horse that's good for glue
And nothing else
But find a man that's truer than,
Find a man that needs you more than I

Sit with me a while
And let me listen to you talk about
your dreams and your obsessions
I'll be quiet and confessional
The violets explode inside me
when I meet your eyes
Then I'm spinning and I'm diving
Like a cloud of starlings

Darling is this love?
