View Full Version : Be honest now, what are the cheesiest shows you've ever been to??

humanoid
03-28-2008, 10:52 AM
Ok, so most of us are reasonably intelligent, and we have wonderful musical taste.....but be honest with yourself and the board......we all have shows that we've been too, no matter what the reason (friends dragged you or whatever)...shows that you wish you could erase from your memory or lose the stub from your ticket collection....concerts that were definitely not hip or cool, but you can't deny it, you were freakin' there!!!!!......what are they????

Mine can thankfully all be blamed on one friend, thanks Chris C!!!!

Mine that I can blame on my friend Chris were....

1.Poison/Damn Yankees.....although Ted Nugent shooting flaming arrows into the band's equipment was by far the most entertaining aspect of the show

2. Extreme/Bon Jovi

I have to do some sever memory recall....mine is failing at the moment, I know there are more!!

ThomThom, I saw Blink 182 once, and it was lame, but they were touring with Green Day, so that was alright, plus it was on 4/20 so the atmosphere was at least extremely fun

I don't have any I can think of that were of my own choice, but my friend Chris held on to this 80's hair metal thing for an extremely long time, even though I kept telling him to quit it for his own good.....I admired his conviction though!!

I saw them in Orange County and the vibe was that of an MTV reality show. Easily the worst concert I have ever been to... Crowd, band, location, everything.

I have told this story on here before, so this is a repeat for the old regs.

in 1981 I had a chance to go see U2 in a small club for a $5 cover. They were touring on Boy and were mostly unknown except for us college radio types. I really liked Boy and wanted to go, except I had other plans with a group of other friends.. to go see Heart. which is what I did.

I've had some gems in my life. My first and second concerts ever take the cake, though:

Milli Vanilli/Young MC/some late 80s all girl R&B group (I think Expose or something like that)

Kenny Loggins

I got drug to both of those at a young age, fortunately, so I have had some time to recover. I do enjoy telling people what my first concert experience was.

I'd like to see modest mouse...and I had a blast at rock the bells 07 in sf!!!

I just wanted to make sure you didn't percieve me as some stuck up hipster is all...:)

I'll explain myself....

Modest Mouse....I saw in '06....Issac Brock kept chastising the audience for requesting songs....he literally stopped the show like 5 times, and told people to fuck off and that they'll "play whatever the fuck they want" when people yelled for certain songs....I'm sure it gets slightly annoying when people do that, but it happens at every show I've ever seen, and when everyone in there paid $40 to see you, just deal with it a little bit....he was such an asshole..I think some of his bandmates were even turned off by it...each time he stopped everything, they looked displeased for sure

Rock The Bells '07.....first of all, shortly before the concert, they moved its location to Hyundai Pavilion in Devore...or Glen Helen, or whatever its called...which I vowed to never go to again, because it has the worst parking /entrance/exit strategy imaginable and it takes several extra hours of your life to get in and out.....the show itself was alright...except Rage against the Machine played slowed down versions of all their songs, and it wasn't loud enough anywhere in the venue....but the real issue was the complete lack of security...my friend (who is a cop) walked right in with a gun in his pocket (disturbing that they didn't even notice)......but the bad part was that people were lighting these huge garbage bonfires burning everything they could find ( a lot of it was plastic cups) so the entire place was filled with noxious chemical fumes that were making everyone sick.....everyone was watching the show covering their faces with their shirts, because it was impossible to breathe.....thousands of people left early because it was absolutely sickening.....only to wait 2 and a half fucking hours to get out of the parking lot!!!!!...........so yes, that experience sucked...I wish I was at the SF one instead!!!

i went to that show as well......it would have been a disaster had the deftones not played...i always thought they were really good.....but yeah, limp bizkit was horrible, and metallica was just sad for me, cause i loved them (and still do) circa and justice for all and before.....hate them.

other bad shows (my mind is racing with this)
Pearl Jam/Sonic youth.....both bands are amazing, but we ended up leaving the show cause sonic youth got totally boo'ed off the stage by pearl jam's idiot fans.....got water bottles thrown at them as well....being huge SY fans, we were pissed.
Cypress hill 95 @bayfront park.....rained so hard they cancelled and house of pain(!) played instead.
2 live crew at revolution, ft.lauderdale 2006......just one member and thirty black guys.....45 minute set....35 minutes of it was the new 2 Live Crew "crunk jams"
Tribe Called Quest @ some wherehouse in north miami 98....never showed up and promoters called the cops before they took off with the money.
Duran Duran at bang music fest, 2006...kill me now please.

i can go on forever.....

The Drifters, The Coasters, THe Platters--3 Motown groups performing at a Casino in Vegas. Music wasn't bad, but show a bit cheesy. Parents loved it though.

The Bangles, at Ventura County Fair. I was drunk and eating a huge funnel cake so it actually wasn't half bad

I saw the Aquabats on 06 and they were excellent. They were cheesy, but thats what they are meant to be. So I think that actually negates the cheese, if that makes sense.

And my girlfriend would likely kill to see the Platters live. I thought they were basically all dead.

i can't explain exactly why, but this made me laugh hysterically.

i've seen ICP three times... the first two times in a warehouse where i'm pretty sure the stage was some cinder blocks and plywood... that's how low budget the shows were.

but the cheesiest show i've been to has to be Winger at a free "music festival" put on by a local rock station here in wichita. it was called OZfest before Ozzy made them change the name. and my friends and i MOSHED during Winger. obviously we were starved for any sort of musical experience.

My first arena concert was The Firm in 1986. I was indifferent about seeing them, but I was really excited to see Jimmy Page before he retired, LOL.

If I only knew that he would spend the next year touring with Coverdale, Plant, and The Black Crowes... well, you get the idea...

BTW, the opening acts was called Virginia Wolf, featuring a young Jason Bonham. Jason had a long drum solo, and Page did his violin bow guitar solo (inside a laser pyramid)... quite the trip down Led Zep memory lane, but certainly cheesy.

Madonna, I guess. It would have been OK if I had paid $20 or something, but it was $95.

I have seen Weird Al, and fairly recently (maybe 6 years ago?), and with no apologies.

Cheesiest band I ever saw had to be Mr Big, but they were opening for Rush. And it was for their first album, so they didn't even do their stupid "power ballad", so it wasn't that bad.

EDIT-I already posted this elsewhere, but if I had a time machine, the first place I would go is this concert...Wembley Stadium, Oct 1979. They sold out six nights.
