View Full Version : coachella express: breakfast at denny's!

so far, boourns and prettyragdoll have expressed (heh) interest in my idea of a pre-party train breakfast at denny's right near downtown union (like seriously a two minute walk)

anyone else in?
I'll pm you guys, and you can respond to confirm. heh I wonder if denny's will take a group reservation >.<

let's get one last serious heart-threatening carbo/protein binge in before we head out to the campgrounds- where the breakfast sandwich is the best item all day, the pizza looks like runoff from a rendering plant slathered on matzah, and the best option is to live on water and vitamins.

Hmm.... It seems like most aren't up for the good times at Denny's. Perhaps you should have mentioned the crazy good Strawberry Lemonade there

nah, man. give it time.

I'll post my cell number on here the week before, and anyone who's undecided can get to LA union at 9, check in their bags, realize they've got hours to kill, THEN realize they need to kiss civilization goodbye properly, and come to denny's to eat their body weight in pancakes, waffles, grits, and every pig meat preparation known to man.
not to mention the ice cream sized scoop of butter that you get on your waffles/pancakes >.<

as a canadian, I'd never known this joy until eating at that very denny's.

come on, people! I bet if we get like ten or more, we can lie, say it's a birthday, and get a mawfuckin CAKE!

Yeah, dennys destroys the body in every possible way.

Ihop and norms are much, much better, of course, but they arent by union station so fuck them.

you guys know that many people have been killed at that dennys right?

i used to work for the Twin Towers Correctional facility down the street... when the inmates are released they go there...

oh and theres also a federal prison a block away too..

but if we have a big group the weakest buffalo would have to go...

There was a shootout at my hometown Denny's a year ago, and it was closed for quite a while so they could remodel and get rid of all the blood spray. It was pretty horrible.

as an English person coming to coachella for the first time, and also going on the express train, i may have to experience this dennys malarkey. i think the whole weekend is going to be a surreal experience for me.....pancakes? grits? frat boys? what does this mean?

and don't forget the wonderful joy that is downtown LA.

Check out skid row!

frozen pilgrim
03-24-2008, 06:35 PM
I did in fact check out 4th and skid last year.
fucked up. ambulances and cop cars for blocks.

anyways, I'll wait another two weeks maybe and then PM people.
fuck yeah, dennys!

my reason for wanting to do this is as follows:

last year, I hitchhiked back from the festival to LAX, leaving indio at around 3 or 4 AM, and the took public trans back to downtown union, where I sat for ten minutes to gather my senses, and then walked to denny's, where myself and my two travelling buddies ate a gigantic, greasy, fantastically american breakfast at the sun rose deep orange over los angeles, on the first morning after the greatest three days of my life.

I can't think of anything better to get myself fired up for the journey out to coachella than rekindling that feeling of immense accomplishment, that unforgettable deep breath in as the sun came up, and realizing in a fractal image on a breakfast plate, the glorious excess of the coachella festival:
every food group, and a thousand flavors, both real and artifical, prepared for you and set in front of you to be taken in at your leisure- more than you could ever finish, more than you ever should, all at once both fantastic, surreal, overwhelming, a little bit nauseating, and immeasurably satisfying.

We're not taking the train but I may drive down for pancakes while the wife is getting ready. Yeah, walk in looking "hard" at that Dennys.

Check out skid row!

Actually skid row isn't AS bad as it was. Still bad, but now you can drive down the street with the windows up and not pass out from the smell that still manages to get in your car.

I wouldn't wanna go to that denny's at like midnight, but at 6/7 AM it was pretty much empty, and pretty clean.
all the little gangsters run home to bed at like fiveish. right before sunrise.

I can eat all kinds of questionable things, yet every time I go to Denny's, I end up feeling like I am going to throw up. Really makes me wonder what exactly they put into the food.

I meant like, sushi that has been sitting on my desk for 6 hours, or the sandwich that I started to make last night when drinking but left on the counter overnight. I just can't imagine what is in Denny's that is so toxic.

frozen pilgrim
03-26-2008, 12:24 PM
okay. so I think the plan for this denny's shindig is as follows:
meet at union at nine to be some of the first to check in
after we've all checked our bags, we can (luggage free) walk over to the denny's. it's pretty much across the frickin' street. then we have until 1:30 before the train leaves, so more like noon to get back to the station.
if there's time between denny's and the train, I highly recommend checking out (I think this is the name) sepulveda blvd, also right across the street from the station. awesome little mexican boulevard full of little kiosks and restaurants, leading up to this beautiful old spanish colonial church.

frozen pilgrim
03-30-2008, 08:36 PM
you.... you did?
cool!
they have some health-conscious choices, as I recall- but I did get an ice cream scoop sized ball of butter on my pancakes. which I truly loved.

here's a fun fact:

in japan, denny's is super duper up-scale dining--like with a piano player and shit

but they have they exact same menu

it's true
