decided to bump this thread rather than start a new one because, well, then I won't catch as much grief.

I moved out to LA to get a job in the industry (not an actor or totally unrealistic shit) but it still isn't working out very well, and I'm coming closer and closer to the time when I am going to have to just say fuck it and get another job to pay rent. So, my question is, does anyone on here have suggestions or connections to another job in LA that wouldn't totally suck and would pay rent?

I quit my job as floor manager of a restaurant/cooking school. about two weeks ago.

they professional responsibilities and level of contribution on my part were not equal to the compensation, and after about two months of tense negotiation, I quit.
they've been about $1500 a week in the red since. anyone in food service knows that's a fuckin shitload.

anyways, I'm starting an online music magazine in toronto.
think spin/rolling stone, but with comprehensive local listings, a focus on local artists, and an intentionally non-existent political agenda.
toronto's #1 culture mag has such a neo-hippie liberalist focus that its' impossible to read a decent fucking album review through all the bullshit.

I need someone from the toronto area with telephone canvassing experience to work for a competitive rate to poll local venues and publications for listings, and I need someone to load the finished product(s) from the graphic design department and present them in an intuitive manner using the chosen hosting architecture.
I already have server space and bandwidth (with direct local hardware access to the servers, and attached workstations).

if anyone on this board is interested in telecommuting to help work on an NME-killer, let me know.

So I just found out why I actually lost this job:

Thursday around 5 pm one of the other techs takes me into the lab and shows me a laptop he needs me to finish installing a couple things on for him and then return to the user. It seems like it couldn't possibly be more than 5 minutes work but he insists he has to leave right this minute for... a golf lesson. It's a kid, younger than me, been working there less than a year.

Now, to me this is kinda bullshit from the get-go. I almost never ask anyone to finish up my machines for me unless there's a particularly good reason. Risking breaking a promise to a user that they'll have their laptop back by 6 p.m. over being five minutes late for a golf lesson is not one of them.

So I left it running the install and then got a call from one of my users in a department I'm responsible for, an emergency, and I went right over to their building to deal with it. Took about an hour as it was a big debacle and thus by the time I was wrapping up at 6 (half an hour later than I'm supposed to have to work) I'd forgotten about the laptop and just went home. Apparently the laptop belonged to an auditor, thus the audit for the night couldn't get done and it caused a big hub-bub with upper management and somebody's head had to roll, so it was mine. How cute.

All that being said, I've been reflecting on my inability to hold a job since I've moved out to LA and I think I need a new personality. I like me, but I'm not sure the curmudgeon thing works anymore. Perhaps Humble Pie is going to have to be the way to go.

1. Never let anyone know how long it takes for you to actually get something done.

2. Never work overtime unless you are getting paid time and a half for it.

3. Arrive late and leave early.

4. Introduce yourself to the 2 hour lunch. No one will ever notice.

5. Don't be affraid to say "NO" or "Not possible".

6. Take up smoking. Smokers always get breaks.

7. Let everyone know that you have kids and they need to be picked up from daycare ever day at a fitting time. Kids are always a good excuse.

The list can go on and on...

There is another job at my workplace that I sort of want more than the job I have now. I am an applicant, but they're also considering outside people. I interviewed on Thursday. It is a weird/awkward situation because every time I see one of the people from that department who are making the hiring decision I want to accost them and ask them if they have chosen yet. So basically at this point I'm just trying really hard not to shoot myself in the foot.

Start a coffee shop (or a bookstore, or a record store) that is like the polo grounds... a beautiful, comfortable, and blank canvas that your customers can paint, and shape as they will. Remember, its about the customers and your community, not you being the cultural gatekeeper........

I drive a low bed hauling heavy equipment / supplies for a So. Cal. water well drilling co. If I'm not hauling drill pipe down the highway, I'm a heavy equipment operator/mechanic.
Actually, he's a boy who couldn't give up his TONKA toys and gets paid for playing in the dirt and mud! (This is a good thing since I'm now unemployed!&%$#@!!!)

I use to want to own a used book/cd store and have it also be a coffee shop and internet cafe all in one. But now I am not sure how that would go over since most people download music and books and Starbucks has coffee on every corner. It would work if I still lived up in Portland but Phoenix probably not.

Tucson is more suited for that kind of joint.

I really want to own a dive bar. Like really bad. *lightbulb above head* If you end up owning a dive bar, I have experience and you could hire me! That way, I'd have a job and you wouldn't have to worry about dealing with the transients slipping in to bathe in the restrooms during the day, or the neighborhood regulars showing up promptly at opening time shaking like a rattle and demanding their scotch! Hell, I'd even remember to put ice in the urinals to keep the piss stench away before the nightshift began!

I'm a Marketing Director working in the fashion/retail industry. Not something I would have anticipated for myself even a few years ago, but it's turned out to be just the right fit.

Every other weekend, I also work as a lead volunteer with City Harvest in NY.
