Are they both playing this year? No.
Does it really matter? No.
Do I like making Polls? Yes.

I voted portishead, just cuz they are playing this year and I think MA kinda lost it on the last few albums.

Since Blue Lines and Protection are two of my favorite albums ever, I gotta got with Massive Attack.

However everything by Portishead ties with Mezzanine and is far greater than 100 window

I voted Massive Attack. Can't believe they didn't sell out here. This state is fucking retarded. We'll see what Portishead does this year. I'm curious.

in my opinion, 100th Window is a masterpiece (minus "a prayer for england").

this poll was just a bad idea.
why compare two bands that love, respect, and draw on each other? it's just asking for conflict- something this board happens to excel at.
(reads whole thread)
and tap-dancing zombie jesus, there hasn't been any out-and-out fighting yet!!!
did hell just freeze the fuck over?

Oh yeah !?!?!?!!! On their last tour, Massive Attack quite literally put my wife to sleep at the Berkeley Greek. DJ Shadow was by far the best part of that show.

I can't believe that anyone would dare say that they are better than Portishead or even in the same ballpark for that matter.

Doing it longer ? Yeah by two years.
Bigger catalog ? Maybe Portishead's 10 year break has something to do with that.
Collaborations ? I could care less about that list of artists.

Oh yeah and the old adage: quality over quantity certainly applies here.

Edit:

Well, I did see David Bowie w/ Nine Inch Nails and Prick in '95, so I guess I care a little 'bout him.

I can't ever make this choice, although I'd see Portishead live before I'd see Massive Attack since I'm one up on Massive Attack.

Seen Massive Attack live, never seen Portishead live.

Portishead's new album is OK, but not as good as their early stuff...

Massive Attack was always kind of hit & miss too...some INCREDIBLE stuff, some almost unlistenable stuff...

But I gotta say Portishead takes it...barely...

Now Thievery Corp...that's another story completely...

I have to agree with the majority of this post, except for the 'barely' part.

I saw Thievery Corp in '06 from the 5th row right under the speakers at the SF Concourse and they were very very good. The show was perfect, way too loud.

Thievery Corp at Coachella was a fucking EXPERIENCE...the bass was overwhelming and beautiful...the visuals were perfect...I wasn't even fucked up...I could imagine for some of the people that were!

I heard that they sounded great at the first day of the Treasure Island Festival. A performance I missed in favor of another show, I did head to the fest on day two, though it was a different theme that day.

Why not? You're on a message forum, and people LOVE to flame. What would be the point of me comparing two completely different bands?

Anyways.. It's exactly 50/50 right now.

Massive Attack has a wider range of music...Portishead is great, but their music tends to run together sometimes, and each song by Massive Attack is so different and unique.

Massive Attack for pioneering the genre, having the best guest vocalist selections of any band (ever), and for mixing up their sound on every album.

Since people like thier opinions in equation form around here,

(M.A. -> Tool) > (Portishead -> Kraftwerk)

Having said, Portishead is going to totally kick it this year and I'm excited.

I think someone should make a movie about tap dancing zombie jesus. It would have to be drama, showing his struggles against a society that won't stop shooting zombies in the face. All this combined with jesus' love of tap dancing.

Massive Attack with Daddy G and Tricky are more of a well rounded group. Protection is superb. Massive attack has had 2 evolve with the different members leaving...in that they are inovative enough to stay on top of the trip-hop genre. Smith & Mighty pioneered the genre but, MA took it to the next level. Portishead is great in there own right...Beths evocative voice is what makes them great. Cant wait to see them...

Ooooo I love them both! 2 of my fav bands, But Massive Attack wins out. I agree, more well rounded and Mezzanine is one of the best cds all time, I know, I know Portishead's Dummy is right up there too. It's just that Massive has put out more albums of great music. Not taking anything away from Portishead.
Advantage Massive Attack.

This is a seriously tough call... and if Tricky were still included in that "Massive Attack," then it would more than tip the scales.

But he's not, and "Roads" is one of the sweetest lovemaking songs of our generation. So, Portishead.

Massive Attack are better on CD. Much more forward thinking beats and sounds, especially from Mezzanine on.

Portishead are better live though.

Still, gotta go with Massive Attack.
