Campingsolo (needs to e-mail confirmation)

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi gang,

We've put together a small group of campers who plan on building a quiet little community in the campground, and we're looking for more.

Camping with a large group of friends has a lot of advantages- you're surrounded by people you can trust. People you know will watch out for your gear when you're away from your site. You can put the limited space to better use if everyone works together. The Camp All Alone Club wouldn't be so large if everyone wanted to just keep to themselves and sleep in their 8x8 square.

But groups of 2-3 don't have a club. We run the risk of being parked next to the Drink And Sing Until You Pass Out On The Neighbor's Tent Club, or the Steal Your Neighbor's Clothes While He's In The Shower Club. And we can't even put up a big canopy if you're next to the Keep Out Of My Square Club.

And don't forget, Coachella '08 is the most frat-boy friendly Coachella yet. Ever lived next to a frat house? Just sayin...the potential is there for nightmare neighbors.

So far we have people from age 20 to 40. The only thing we really have in common is a desire to have respectful neighbors. We're looking for more people to join us.

If you're looking for people to have a good conversation with, this is the place. On the other hand, if just want to get away from the noise and be left alone all weekend, that's cool too. The main thing is that we want non-drinkers (or light-drinkers) who don't want to stay up and play drums all night. If you want to stay up and talk music, art, whatever, that's cool. We just want to create a small community of civility, where people can get some rest.

I expect mainly couples to respond, but everyone's welcome. If you're a single camper, but the Camp All Alone club sounds too rowdy, try us. It should go without saying that race, religion, and sexual preference doesn't matter. No "hard" drugs- neighbors on bad trips aren't conducive to sleep- but what you do to relax is your business.

Once we get a decent sized block, I'll set up an e-mail list so people can get to know each other and stay in touch. So far, it's been "lurkers" contacting me...so if you're shy or just don't have time to post on the board all day, this might be the Camping Club for you. We just don't have a catchy name yet.

(I posted a thread last week under the premise that I was old and just want to sleep at night, but got some interest from younger people as well, so I thought I'd post a new thread that was more welcoming.)

I'll PM you later, too. Might be tough defending the spot if everyone goes in early Friday. Are you alone? Since we have an odd number right now, maybe we could leave one square right in the middle of everyone, which wouldn't be as tempting

Hmmmm I think I'm down. *Don't drink much around strangers and not into drugs/smoking. Nothing wrong with doing that, just not for me* I figure I'll party some but at the end of the day I'd probably be out for the count . How early are you going to the camp ground?

The people that are on the definite list are all coming sometime before Thursday evening. I will probably be earliest to get a good spot, but plan to bug out and go into town for a while until it gets dark.

I will PM you tonight, Petty.

Hey, we've got as many as 21 "maybes" right now. This plan might work after all.

My boyfriend and I would love to be on the "maybe" list. I'll know closer to the event who/how many of our friends are joining. But, we would love to be surrounded by a more civil crowd.

How would we know where to find everyone? We wont be arriving until sunset-ish on Thursday. (Unless we can get Thursday off work, then we'll be taking the Coachella Express!)

M Sparks
03-22-2008, 07:06 AM
Wakeup...check your PMs

We have 10 spots confirmed. I've sent e-mail confirmations to Jankster, Dancebitches, Garynvegas, and Petty. If you didn't get them, check your spam filters. My domain was hijacked by spammers one day a couple months ago and I'm still on a few blacklists.

I sent PMs to Cooperb1, Orbit, Frozen Pilgrim, Ultraslow, Wakeupyounger & Mvanwinkle. If any of you sent ME an e-mail before 8am Saturday morning, I didn't get it.

Potential right now if everyone confirms is for 22-28. (Not sure how big some peoples groups are.)I think 32 would be a good cutoff for confirmations, just so it doesn't get too hard to contact everyone.

April 10th is two weeks in advance...we'll cut it off then and sort out the details.

And don't forget, Coachella '08 is the most frat-boy friendly Coachella yet.

FUCKING EXPLAIN YOURSELF FOR THIS.

I thought we had finally dismissed this utter horseshit claim that 08's lineup is somehow especially geared towards "frat boys" or "bros" or whatever the fuck you douchebags keep trying to tag it as.

Based on motherfucking what exactly? Jack Johnson? Do you dumb fucks really think that Jack Johnson playing ONE NIGHT is going to draw more of this "frat boy" element than fucking Rage and RHCP last year?

Roger Waters = classic rock, you can't even classify him as drawing any one crowd
Love And Rockets = a fucking 80s band no frat boy has ever heard of
Portishead = yeah, 'cause trip-hop is real popular at wet t-shirt contests
Kraftwerk = computer and robot oriented classic electronic music
Death Cab = too soft for any frat boy to admit being a fan of
The Verve = Brit-rock only known for one single to almost everybody except late 90s brit-rock fans
The Breeders = an all-female mostly lesbian grunge band, again known to most people by only one single (sadly)

So seriously, what the fuck is the case for this? Jack Johnson--who draws mostly surfers, hippies, and predominantly young chicks; The Raconteurs; and My Morning Jacket? THAT'S the most frat-boy friendly lineup in Coach history?

I didn't say "Especially"

Here, I can explain it...

Slightly Stoopid is playing this year. Slightly Stoopid has not played in years past. Therefore, 2008 is MORE frat-boy friendly than years past.

It was a joke. Relax.

the worst thing about "RAGERRR GRRRR 2007" was that all the metal-ish frat-ish hybrid douchemachines that invaded the grounds last year obviously had little to no understanding of the real message and motive behind RATM's music.
if any of us had asked one of the ragerrgrr'ers if they were a zapatist they'd have just cocked their head to one side and looked confused like a gerbil trying to bite through a plastic cage.
in fact- this reminds me of my favorite game from coachella last year-
"professional ignorance"
it all started on a dare I willingly accepted- to walk up to someone with a che guevara t-shirt on, state plainly that he was "my favorite member of rage against the machine", and repeat this until one of the shirt wearers professed the same ignorance.
the game expanded to asking people what chili peppers' tune they thought rage would open with. the object of that one was to get in the line "they'll never open with under the bridge- it's a ballad!"

Message? Rage's message can go suck a South American Communist Cock. I fucking hate every one of the douchebag pseudo-intellectual quasi-revolutionary stances, messages, and motives I've ever heard out of Rage. It's a goddamn ruse to cover up the fact that Tom makes exactly THREE fucking sounds with his guitar and every single song is completely interchangable.

People that hold up Communist icons just look like fucking idiots. It was a brutally inherently flawed line of thinking, I don't understand why anyone would want to idolize such oblivious revolutionaries.

can we take the discussion about the difference between che guevara's brand of communism and zapatist liberation to another thread?
they're not even related.
one's about socialist rule, and one's about indigenous rights.
you're comparing idiotic pseudo-communists with non-violent grassroots aboriginal rights advocacy.
but seeing as the latter is never really mentioned in the media, and never really has been, ever, it's easy to understand how the intention to spread that message got completely buried.

tom morello's highly overrated, and rage should not produce another album, ever- their sound was exhausted halfway through battle for los angeles, and they should have let their first two albums speak for themselves. you're right, randy- morello has nowhere to go from here. although I'd just like to point out one thing:
perhaps the reason you dislike his style so much is that you also dislike scratch turntablism, and that's where a lot of his extended technique is derived from.

ANYWAYS

I'm looking forwards to camping in this group.

RATM's politics are not based on the guevaran brand of communism.
they are based on support for the EZLA. look it up.

heh yeah I know, randy.

yeah they do actually-
or they did up until partway through the writing for battle of los angeles.
morello wanted to take things in a more popular direction, both musically and with the political causes they were directly behind, and de la rocha wanted to write another whole album about zapatist liberation in drop d.

IMO, rage should have let their two very focused first albums stand on their own. anything after was either
a) useless, failed horizon broadening
b) redundancy
don't get me wrong- there are a couple standout tunes from B.F.L.A, but all in all it doesn't hold up against their other work.
tom morello's work in rage is very narrow in its' scope. absolutely agreed. it's "a sound". he expands in audioslave, but I never liked them much.

I don't have any family in bc, but I know some people on salt spring, a few people near surrey, and a few in vancouver- I've only been to vancouver once, but there's a palpable lack of tension in the air that, as a lifelong torontonian (and always in the downtown) I deeply appreciate. it's nice to be able to breathe once in a while. OK...we have 20 confirmed spots now. If all the maybes confirm, we could have up to 36. So if you haven't confirmed, do it now...you can always drop out later.

I think when we get to 36, I'll cut it off to new groups. If any of you confirmed want to invite more people to your group, that's fine. I know Rage is waiting to hear from a few people.

I think what I will do is once we know what section we are in on Thursday, I will put it on my outgoing voicemail message. So people can just call me when they arrive, and even if I don't answer, you can hear the section. I guess if we do that, we can go as big as possible. I just don't want to have to call 50 different people.

I forgot to mention this yesterday...EPIC!

hell yes.
(I also think randy (lastgreatman) should do the same:D)
oh man.

so-
I have been thinking about it, and if there are twenty sites, that's four by six sites, with an eight foot aisle, and two eighteen-inch fire lanes running through, if the fire code is the same as last year.

so- with careful and neighborly arranging of tents, we could have a circle of tents with a nice, secluded communal area in the middle. also, that allows for the potential for the tents to be used as anchor points for some type of large communal shade structure.

psychic friend, I'd love a helping hand here-
any chance you could give us a guesstimate on the size of the aisles and fire lanes? "mebbe the same-ish" is a totally acceptable answer.
canadian tire is overpriced and useless these days, except for, apparently, tarpaulins.
they're like five bucks for a huge one.
I can not understate the tantamount importance of a secondary shade structure- it makes the difference between waking up when you want to, and waking up just before you get heatstroke at seven thirty.
not to mention saving a lot of sweat. and sweat= both water and stank, neither of which you want to expelling in large amounts into the desert air. IMHO.

M Sparks

Bud...check your PMs and e-mail me back.

Frozen...4 x 6 is 24, not 20, but we'll probably pass 24 soon enough. We are at 21 now.

Once we have a list of who's coming for sure, I want to find out who has what as far as tent sizes, and who has canopies. I don't know if mapping out the whole thing is realistic, but at the very least, I want to try to group parties together that can benefit each other. For example, our canopy just barely covers our tent, but we have shade down the sides too. There are a few single campers...if they just have a backpackers tent or something, they can set up just to the west side of ours and we can at least offer some shade until the sun gets overhead.

It's also starting to look like almost everyone is arriving by nightfall on Thursday, so hopefully we can all work together to make a little community that works for everyone.

Hmmm...I've never camped before. I was looking at this 360 photo...

http://www.roomrotator.com/coachella/Camp_02

So the white lines mark the "fire lanes", correct?. And this photo was taken in one of the "aisles"? (Which would actually be 14 feet in this picture, since it's two camping spaces wide, and the spaces were 7 x 7).

And looking at this pic...

http://cmsimg.thedesertsun.com/apps/pbcsi.dll/bilde?NewTbl=1&Avis=J1&Dato=20060501&Kategori=EVENTS17&Lopenr=501003&Ref=PH&Item=4&Maxw=600&Maxh=500

...which is pre-2007, so it may not relate to that other picture...anyway, there are only 3 or so of these big walkway aisles.

Sooooo...how do the aisles relate to our little group? Or by aisle, are you talking about the rows of spaces. (Which would be 16 feet, not 8...right?)

MSparks, That's a great picture! I used to manage the bar at the clubhouse and the little cantina building that you see right in the center of the pic...The polo people would trip on seeing their playing field like that!

How about "like the campground fun, but don't want neighbors who don't know how to handle their fun."

Or "could afford a hotel, but doesn't want to spend 3 hours a day idling in traffic."

Go back to your club, dude. We've only got two singles in ours, it's not a threat to your utopia. :D

We've got 24 confirmed now.

Also, we are 37.5% Canadian. The fact that the Canadian government actually trusts their young adults to drink must lead to adults who don't feel the need to get plastered all the time.

it's pretty cool that like forty percent of us are canadian. we do love to camp.
hopefully some of the other international contingents will make an appearance.
who else likes to camp?
according to Lt. james brown dangle of the reno PD, the only people other than canadian who camp are the japanese and the germans.
I've been to germany, but not japan. it's up there on my list, though.

yeah, you can avoid. Everyone around me last year partied responsibly and that was being placed at random. There is no reason to think it cant be done purposely. Yes, there will be the usual partying going on everywhere, we are just attempting to set up a camp of like minded folks with similar attitudes about partying (or not partying)

M Sparks
04-01-2008, 11:42 AM
Just got 39 and 40 maybe (sorry, Bud, it's a couple). Let's just make 48 the cutoff. 8 x 6 would be great...that's like 3100 square feet.

Bud Luster
04-01-2008, 11:48 AM
haha, no problem. I assume with our camp "theme" that most folks will be couples looking to relax and not participate in the single and ready to mingle activities. There will be plenty of that elsewhere in the campground for those of us that are interested. : )

Yeah...actually, he brought it up..."It has a discoball, ha."

Man, "Solo" has their own message board. So, I think I have phpBBS available on my server. I don't think there would be a point to setting it up though, especially with only three weeks to go. Plus, even with 39 actual people, there's only 18 or 19 contact people. I'll just set up a e-mail list so we can get info out to everyone quick. I really don't want to make this more complicated than it needs to be.

EDIT- Oh, and the Camp Potato Rave was just a joke, but it looks like it's caught on, so...

I will set up the e-mail list this weekend.

M Sparks
04-05-2008, 07:40 AM
47, and I'm cutting the confirmed list off for now. PhatKat said he might have a third person, and Rage said he might have someone else too.

A block of 48 will be pretty good- 6 x 8...three rows.

M Sparks
04-07-2008, 04:20 PM
Got one more single to add to the list, so that's 48 spaces.

I set up the e-mail list, so you all should have gotten a test e-mail. (Except thisisnotsafe, who I just added, and Jankster, whose e-mail address I screwed up...you should get the next one.)

M Sparks
04-08-2008, 03:04 PM
I forgot PhatKat said he might add someone, so now we have 49 spaces. He said they don't need an extra space, but I want to keep it fair.

Bud Luster suggested we overestimate a little at check-in anyway, but I don't want to ask for a block of 60 if we only have 49. So I'm going to try to drum up at least a few more people.

I talked to Frozen Pilgrim last night about how I was preparing a little 48 square grid map to team people up...I jinxed it. :)

M Sparks
04-09-2008, 05:39 AM
50 now, and maybe 3 more.

The plan now...rather than try to manage the layout of the whole campground area, we are going to put people in groups of 6-8, based on what kind of tents and canopies people have. It will be up to you to make sure everyone in your group fits in your 6-8 squares. Likely, if you are a single camper, you will be teamed with a larger group, as single campers may have trouble fitting in one square, and larger groups will probably have room left over.

faxman75
04-09-2008, 07:37 AM
So, if there were to be a merge we would have almost a hundred people? Crazy.

Bud Luster
04-09-2008, 09:45 AM
5 we are going to put people in groups of 6-8, based on what kind of tents and canopies people have.

Hey Sparks, I will email you my tent and canopy dimensions by the end of the week. I have to get it out and dust it off and set it up etc...

Cool, I was going to ask, since I saw that post about your canopy.

I'll team you up with someone who has extra room. There's a group of three that's all in one tent, so maybe you can be the 4th in the square.

M Sparks
04-09-2008, 11:48 AM
