ACL lineup to be announced April 15

By Michael Corcoran | Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 10:02 AM

C3 Presents booker Charles Attal says the lineup for the 7th annual Austin City Limits Festival will be announced April 15, almost a month earlier than last year. Tickets will not go up then; they’re already selling at a top tier of $170 for all three days, Sept. 26- 28.

Let the unusually quiet rumor mill begin.

So, Lolla will release theirs just right after the presale on march 25th?

I always forget about ACL and Street Scene.

People care, but lets get that one out of the way. C3 got em for Lolla and Im sure thats good enough to make them happy, but some peopel would be hopeful in thinking they would stick around another month in the u.s. to play ACL.

supre...duh

no, I dont, if they played it I wouldnt go, they would make up the stupidest set times like last year and put them up against another really great act which is just lame.

Too hot & humid there plus there's too many obnoxius old people with their chairs. Public transpo and parking (in and out of the festival) are disasters too.

good point.

I also thought about not coming back never again because those chairs all around the stages.

I rode a bike to the fest two of the three days, so there wasn't any problem at all.

My guess:

R.E.M., Tom Petty, Flaming Lips

I completely agree about getting in and out of the place, and the humidity, and the chairs, ugh.

We too rode bikes last year but the wall to wall people after Bjork was impenetrable without running people over..which we did a little bit.

The fact that they have in-and-outs is freat, especially if you good swimming in Barton Springs.

Lines in have never been a problem for me. Getting out is fine, if you don't count on taking the shuttles. It's about a 25-minute walk to 6th, and very worth it.

The chairs derelict my balls. Man, do I hate those chairs.

But being able to take your beer everywhere almost makes up for it.

God ACL has sucked balls for the last 2 years now. The fact that Muse headlined last year was the only true gem of the festival and that was unexpected due to the White Stripes fiasco.

If acl doesn't snubb the EDM scene this year and brings in acts that are actually relevant rather than gather artists that only fit the ""acl" brand name then maybe I would consider coming back, but only once a line up has been released.

acl is a hot, humid, and certainly dusty environment. They don't water that park enough to maintain a grassy field and they need to take care of the ANTS that infest that place as well.
By the way I completely agree about the chairs that pop up everywhere around the stages and makes it that much harder for people getting thru a fucking maze of chairs, and then people get pissy for stepping either over them or on their stuff!!

I live here also and would like to be proud of a festival held in my own back yard. The 15th can't come soon enough, maybe this year we have some real hope of a good lineup.

The muse fans are what made it suck.

They have NEVER been associated with EDM, so why would you use whether or not they have EDM artists as a barometer of what they are doing? That's me complaining that the New Orleans jazz fest doesn't have enough punk bands.

acl is a hot, humid, and certainly dusty environment. They don't water that park enough to maintain a grassy field and they need to take care of the ANTS that infest that place as well.

The dust issue two years ago was specifically due to Hurricane Rita. As a general rule, Austin is not very humid, at least compared to everywhere else except the desert.

From Tripwire...

"With all this talk about Lollapalooza, Coachella and other festivals, we figured it was time to check in on one of our favorites, Austin City Limits. We already know that ACL is taking place September 26-28 at Zilker Park, and we also know that tickets are currently on sale. But what about that lineup?

We're still waiting for the official word that is coming April 15, but for a cheap trill, check out the ACL Car Stereo (Wars) mashup. In it you'll hear a mix of some of the artists that will be playing the event. Upon our listen we caught Hot Chip, Gnarls Barkley, CSS, Silversun Pickups, N*E*R*D, Del The Funky Homosapien, Jamie Lidell and The Raconteurs. Listen here (http://www.aclfestival.com/mashup) to see if you catch anymore acts."

So far we've got...

Considering the types of artists that ACL tends to have and which ones are doing the festival circuit, my guess (and hope) is that three of the major acts are Beck, Flaming Lips and REM. If two of them (or other major acts I like) are on the same day, I'll buy single day passes. I stay with friends in Austin and drive from Fort Worth so fuck going to more than one day of ACL unless it's something stupid awesome like Radiohead, Daft Punk and MBV.

It could be the only US festival that could bring altogether some of these acts in my wish list to see this year (that I cant afford or possibly will not be able to see anywhere):

Massive Attack (played in 2006)
MBV
Oasis (2005)
Beck
Franz Ferdinand (2004, 2005)
Kasabian (2005)
Elbow
The Delays
M83 (2005)
Doves (2005)

but so far so good (in my mind, thats good LOL), nothing spectacular yet as to the ones that are "confirmed / likely to play" there (i.e, either I'm seeing them at Coachella/Lolla OR I don't really care about them being there):

Gogol Bordello, Shooter Jennings, Okkervil River, Man Man (saw 'em few weeks ago!), Silversun Pickups, CSS, NERD, Gnarls Barkley, Raconteurs, MGMT, Jamie Lidell, Neko Case, Kate Nash, Hot Chip, Octopus Project, Del the Funky Homosapien, Heartless Bastards, Robert Earl Keen, Sharon Jones, Iron & Wine (later tonight!) ... Just saw them at Club Deville in Austin this past weekend (FREE SHOW!). Film School only played for about 35-40 minutes... BSP was fantastic as always.

Look, I'll be honest and this is just my opinion so take it what I'm about to say with a grain of salt: Coachella has the weakest lineup (again in my opinion) of Lolla, ACL and Coachella (the 3 festivals that I don't usually miss). I love Coachella's vibe and my parents live in the Palm Springs area and all, but I can't find a legitimate reason to go to Coach after seeing the Lolla and ACL lineups... Roger Waters would be great. I've caught Prince (playing with Stevie Wonder in Vegas) and he was lackluster, at best. Considering we were sitting in the 2nd row, I was expecting to be blown away. I wasn't... So basically, Waters, Portishead, The Verve, Metric, Les Savy Fav, Islands and a few more waaay undercard acts are the only unique acts that would compel me to fly out there... First year in many years that I won't be in Indio in April but I can't find a way to justify it to myself.

Also, I can't believe nobody is mentioning Roky Erikson as part of the ACL bundle. Considering Roky played with Okkervil River at SXSW, I'd assume you could expect an encore performance of "I Walked with a Zombie" or "You're Gonna Miss Me"... I mean, the lineup has some acts that at best would be considered "uncool" by the Indie crowd, but in terms of diversity, I like it quite a bit. Then again, what the fuck do I know?

Hmmmm? Coachella weaker than Austin Shitty Limits - Paleeze.

Dude, I criticized last year's ACL on these very boards, I believe. I'd say the past 2 years have been subpar relative to Coachella and Lolla. This year, ACL one-upped Coachella (in MY OPINION) and holds up against Lolla quite favorably.

And the weather statement is inane. Is Texas hot in September? Usually. Is it unbearably hot? Not at all. It certainly wouldn't be factored in to whether or not I was planning on attending. If you want to knock the festival, knock the festival, but you're making it sound like people are going to be dropping like flies as the heat consumes them. Trust me, it isn't that bad. When ACL came around a little bit earlier in the year, it was far worse. Like Coach moving up in the year, ACL has moved back to accommodate the brittle fans who would whither away in the heat.

And yeah Tom, fuckin' Roky Erickson... And he's so low on the bill. I almost missed seeing him at first glimpse. In fact, the entire lineup was like that to a certain degree. I have absolutely no idea who anybody in the last eleven lines are in the ACL lineup.

ACL typically has two stages for bands that fit into A) gospel stuff and B) Austin Ventures stage comprised of low profile Austin acts... The bottom lines of the ACL poster are comprised of several bands that fit those specific niche areas although Mates of State and a couple other names stand out as names are somewhat recognizable. Granted, I dislike Mates of State, but I think the nutmeat is in the lines above those last 11.

And yes Courtney, going to Austin is never a bad idea. Good place, good people.

As for Roky being below FoW last year, dare I say that FoW is much more proven than VW. I really wanted to like that Vampire Weekend album, but I didn't count on it sucking so much. Say what you want about FoW, but they produced some good power pop (some of it admittedly cheesy). I would never dare put them up with the likes of Velvet Crush, Jellyfish, Raspberries, et al. but I'd prefer FoW over VW any day of the week. Again, that's just my taste. I have several friends that are all about VW but I just can't get into them. Neither FoW nor VW should be billed above Roky...

It looks like they added Adele and Blues Traveler to the line up.

And it seems from what the moderator wrote that they might be adding some more.

Edit: They will probably add Kate Nash since she was in the mash up and not on the line up.

Also, they started a petition to get Brian Eno to perform with David Byrne. I hope somebody is listening. :)

So that means with the addition of Adele and Blues Traveller there will be about 14 more additions to the line up coming...

I will be there. We bought the tickets for this well before we decided to go to Coachella. I skipped some of the artists at Coachella that I knew would be at ACL, so I'm excited to see some of the acts I missed, like The Swell Season and Duffy.

I also have a weakness for Alison Krauss (hush up!), so it'll be nice to see her with Robert Plant. (Though I doubt it will be as good as when I saw Alison Krauss with Union Station.) Foo Fighters? Meh. David Byrne?! El yay!

ok im in sacramento and this festival never was on my radar. but we ran into someone at the store who told us that this festival is awesome and they are going. we told them how much fun coachella is so we talked for a bit.

now, ive never been to texas. but the lineup is very good this year, and the funds i need for me and my wife are very reachable for us. so for all of you who have gone, i do have some basic FAQ's.

1. how is the layout?
2. how r the people?
3. how is the vibe and festival in general?

ive already done 2 hrs of studying on this festival in regards to money and expenses so its looking good and id love to go to texas just cuz so let me know..... thanks..

i will say this in regards to lineup comparisons:

i love coachella but the acl lineup is better overall. coachella came through with prince and roger waters, but this one has a great middle tier. its close but acl is winning barely. but then again its 2 different festivals and both have great followings so no competition. they are both cool...

people are pretty cool, except those who bring chairs and get mad when you try to pass to the front 10 min after the band starts playing. vibe is nice too, not as good as Coachella but not as lame as Lolla. my only complaint are the chairs. the day they ban chairs, this festival will be awesome.

and there are a lot of aftershows, which is a good thing.

yeah at first it never crossed my mind to go, but the more i read, the more it seems like a cool festival and we can afford it since the tickets and hotel rooms are fairly cheap... plus there are already at least 2 dozen bads i want to see so im set! reserved a cheap ass motel 6 since its for crashing only. buying concert tix next then preparing for flight, and aftershow info next. looking forward to it! :)

I liked the Eagles and John Fogerty.

The others I saw were Shelby Lynne, Mike Ness, Michelle Branch and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

I only caught a brief moment of Glen Campbell. I was scared to watch him because of this album coming out...

Meet Glen Campbell (CD, limited edition vinyl, digital album)
(NOT FINAL SEQUENCE)

1. Jesus (Velvet Underground)
2. All I Want Is You (U2)
3. Times Like These (Foo Fighters)
4. Grow Old With Me (John Lennon)
5. Angel Dream (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers)
6. Sadly Beautiful (The Replacements)
7. Sing (Travis)
8. These Days (Jackson Browne)
9. Walls (Circus) (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers)
10. Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) (Green Day)

I was afraid he would start going into covers for the entire set so I didn't stay and watch.

Eagles and Fogerty were great. Shelby Lynne spent most of the time complaining what BS the VIP seats and area were...

people will always complain about something so i look at it by observing videos from you tube(some people did like 5 to 10 min little documentaries on their trup and is actually very helpful for a newbie), and also looking at the fest from what they have to offer. i do admit the chair thing may not be great, but having in/out privileges, no beer garden just open drinking i believe, and it ending at 10pm works good for me. by 10pm im burnt anyways so having the main act up at 830 works for me if im up for it, ill hit a bar or club aftershow so im very interested.........

I've been to two ACLs, the conditions are not horrid. There are pluses and minuses relative to Coachella, taken as a whole it nets out about the same.

Pluses (ACL > Coachella)
- no beer jails, can take your drink anywhere
- not as hot, usually (especially now that they've moved ACL from mid- to late-September)
- more stages
- you're never far from a portapotty, they basically ring the entire site

Minuses (ACL < Coachella)
- humidity.
- shuttle buses can sometimes be a total clusterfuck
- chairs (though they're pretty far back and not dense so this is a minor annoyance)
- one of the main stages looks just about due west so late afternoon/early evening sets the band is basically staring straight into the Texas sun, which makes it even more unpleasant (for both band & fans) than the Outdoor stage at Coachella in the late afternoon. Spoon suffered for this last year.

yeah the shuttle buses seem cluster fucked. we will proabably due the shuttle friday then if its too annoyinh just pay the dough for a taxi. but no beer jail is soo a plus for me. and they did move it to the last weekend of sept so that will help a little.
