My music professor once told me that Mozart and Charlie Parker were the only true musical geniuses. Who do you guys think should be added to the list, or do you think these two are deserving?
I thought of this cuz I was wondering to myself wether Aphex Twin would fit.

My adds to the genius list would be Bach and Lennon/McCartney, but there are a lot more.

Yeah Lennon/McCartney makes sense. I would add some Pink Floyd probably and in the jazz world, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane. I don't get how someone would say Charlie Parker wasn't a genius.

That's a tough question. In the classical music realm I'd say:

Bach
Mozart
Beethoven
Stravinsky

In jazz:

Louis Armstrong
John Coltrane
Miles Davis
Thelonius Monk

In popular music (which I'm just using as a general term)

John Lennon
Chuck Berry
Kurt Cobain
Bob Dylan

That's all I can think of for now, without giving the question some really deep thought. As far as I'm concerned, a big part of being a musical genius includes being able to take music to a new level. The musicians listed above definitely did just that.

didnt say Jack White was a genius, Im just replying to the comment that he is lazy

if you are commenting on Prince I didnt just say he plays guitar I said he can play almost every musical instrument...his talents dont just lay with pop or rock or funk...the guy could produce classical scores if he wanted to. He has thousands of recorded songs that are not released but could be.

The question would be, would his "classical" (incorrect term) be important in any way, shape, or form?

The quantity of songs he has produced also does not affirm him as a musical genius. I'm not saying he's not, but offer some relevant reasoning.

And to correct myself, playing instruments, in a variety of styles, well does not make a person a musical genius.

Just like painting well does not necessarily make someone an artistic genius. Or sewing well does not make someone a genius fashion designer. etc. etc.

Yeah, no, Jack White is probably one of the most overrated musicians in the biz today. You know the trick where you can play two Nickelback songs at the same time and they'll sound the same? It also works for a number of White Stripes songs.

Basically Jack White needs Brendon Benson to make his music original.

This I'm chalking up to personal opinion. They're bland, every single seems to follow the same route, and I hate Jack White's voice (especially when it's by itself). I've already had this argument on numerous occasions, but the White Stripes do nothing for me, in fact, should Meg White's breakdown be the end of the band, so be it. I unfortunately doubt that TWS is through, though.

As for the argument that Jack White is overrated, well, it's true. He's mentioned in magazines and on websites, and in conversations, as being some phenomenal fucking guitarist and a masterful lyricist and that shit just isn't true.

without a fucking doubt. The conceptual stuff he did (which isn't music as much as it is performance art) aside.
