View Full Version : Guessing the set times - SATURDAY

I have no life (except for 3 days every April) and decided to put this together for us. Looking forward to discussing this with you all. Look it over and let us know what you think! Definitely need input from everyone to get our best guess.

Obviously there are no TIMES in there because that would be impossible to guess, but just looking at the stage and the order. Also looking at avoiding major conflicts.

This is... more or less right. Except, unfortunately, swap Rilo Kiley with Cafe Tacuba since PT announced that they'll be playing the Main Stage.

Also:
1. Swap Minus the Bear and Man Man
2. Swap Little Brother with MGMT, the hype the MGMT guys have been getting should be warrant of a MS slot
3. Unfortunately... Swap Enter Shitkari with VHS or Beta, seeing as they'l undoubtedly open for my beloved Dredg...

1. Cafe Tacuba is confirmed to be playing the main stage by Paul T when he announced the Coachella lineup on that mexican radio station.

2. No Way in hell hot chip and Kraftwerk conflict although I do see them playing the outdoor theatre

3. If Aphex Twin does play the main stage (and looking at your set times makes me think this is more and more a possibility if only for the fact that there isn't that much room in the Sahara for him) I'm pretty confident Kraftwerk would be closing it out just because their stage set up is going to be so elaborate.

Is it consensus that Death Cab are playing the main stage? I don't believe Cafe Tacuba would be playing that early, if they switched with Rilo Kiley. My guess is that Cafe Tacuba is in Death Cab's slot on the main Stage and Death Cab has a headliner spot at the Outdoor Theatre. Unless, Aphex Twin is not playing Saturday, in which case just move everyone up and slide Cafe Tacuba behind Death Cab, or ahead of them.

1. Every pitchfork kid would kill themselves over a Animal Collective-Stephen Malkmus-Aphex Twin conflict.
2. Way too big of a deal is being made over Kate Nash for her to open the day.
3. I just had an idea. Since the Sahara is already so crowded, maybe they can do a Jarvis Cocker thing and have Aphex Twin play the outdoor while nothing happens on the main?
4. Yeah, like previously stated, Cafe Tacuba will be on the main stage.
5. M.I.A. is way too big for the mojave now. I imagine her on the main before Cafe Tacuba or on the outdoor a little later.
6. Seeing Islands anywhere near Portishead breaks my heart, but I guess that's more of a personal problem than logistical.
7. I don't see Stephen Malkmus and Dwight Yoakam playing the Mojave.

Death Cab on the main? Definitely. I mean, didn't they do two shows at the Greek the last time they were in LA?

- Aphex Twin not closing the Main Stage, but most likely the Saharah
- Who are Carbon/Silicon and if I am asking this question, then that means Gobi
- MIA on Main Stage or Outdoor Stage
- Dwight Yoakam on Main Stage
- Mark Ronson, Hot Chip in the Sahara
- Akron/Family in the Gobi
- MGMT in the Mojave
- Kate Nash on the Main Stage early in the day
- Islands, Devotchka in the Gobi

Carbon/Silicon are two musical fucking legends. (Well, a legend and an underground legend.) Even though I haven't cared for much I've heard from C/S, people are going to want to see them if only to say they did.

That said, I kinda pictured them in the Mohave, just cause I want to see the old coots up close.

Mick fucking Jones from The Clash is not an underground legend.

I imagine the having th exact same set time Roky Erickson had last year. Around 4:00 in the gobi. It makes perfect sense to me.

Has anyone noticed there needs to be 9 to 11 bands on each stage this day?

I am thinking maybe some of the Dj/electronic acts might play the Do Lab.????

I have no clue. But this shit is hard. I do not envy the people who have to figure out the set times.

That being said, I'm going to try reworking this one a bit.

Maybe the Dome...I think the Do Lab does their own thing.

Wasn't there a rumor about a 6th stage going around very briefly?

It's not undoable. Gobi has 10 acts sometimes. They just need to get everything rolling EARLY. Also, Institubes are listed as four individual acts, If you figure there's usually a few 2 hour sets in the Sahara- those guys could do 30 minutes each.

Trim down the Sahara sets to no more than 90 minutes...get every stage open by 12:30 or so...they can do it.

EDIT: I figured this was going to be moved eventually. No big deal. Let's just keep it going.

Okay - I updated the "set times".
There's still a couple things where I just said.. "fuck, I dont know where to put them" (i.e. Carbon/Silicon)

But I did come to the conclusion that Hot Chip on the Outdoor right before Portishead would be fucking sweet.

As far as Kate Nash, I'm not familiar with this chick. I hear she's on VH1. Give me a suggestion. Where should she go? Who should take her place?

I imagine Kate Nash will play late afternoon/early evening in the gobi or mojave. She's basically the new Lily Allen, except worse.

Aphex Twin won't be on the main stage. Too esoteric. If he really does play Saturday, then he will be on another stage before Portishead. Outdoor or Sahara. I guess that means he'd conflict with Cafe Tacuba and/or Death Cab.

Death Cab is way too big to be on the outdoor.

Islands playing against Portishead would be heartbreaking :(

But this is looking better.

I really like how it is now. I can see Uffie, Kate Nash, Kavinsky, SebastiAn, Boys Noize, Hot Chip, Portishead, Aphex, and Kraftwerk, which would be awesome. I'm not sure Boys Noize would be that early though, I can see a Boys Noize/Hot Chip conflict before portishead maybe.

Most people aren't going to know who Aphex Twin is, let alone "get it", so he will either be in the Sahara or outdoor. The day seems too full to do the "shut down the main stage" a la Jarvis and Madonna, but whatever acts he plays against, he's definitely not conflicting with Portiswerk. Goldenvoice wouldn't do that.

I think Kate Nash will play about the same as Lilly Allen last year.

Might be because I don't know all the artists but it seems pretty weak from 2 till 5

The Mojave was too small for Hot Chip last year. Why put them in the same overcrowded, miserable place two years in a row? That leaves the Sahara since that kind of music does not translate on the Main or Outdoor well at all. They want people dancing, not passed out on the grass.

That looks pretty good but..
Sasha & Digweed are closing the Sahara. (Or at least that's what one source says)
And I really don't think they are going to tear down Kraftwerk's setup at the end of the night. I'm still thinking Aphex will be in the Sahara, but there are SO many Sahara acts already.
I'm glad you have Animal Collective closing though.

Not sure about Calvin Harris, but I didn't know what you guys decided on.

Its definitely not a bad guess.
But...
1. Scars on Broadway closing the Outdoor? They haven't released an album.
I had them closing the Gobi because it's small and I dont think many people will care either way. If they want to see them, they will.
2. I liked the idea of Death Cab closing the Outdoor. It gives more diversity to the closers, and a good spot for a high-billed act. You have to admit there's going to be a looooott of people who could care less about Portishead and Kraftwerk, so there's gonna be good acts up against them.
3. I do agree with Aphex in the Sahara. I'll change that one on mine.

Oh. I like those set times. Iwould have only 1 minor conflict. amazing.

The only problem I would have if those were the times is Devotchka vs Aphex and Man Man vs Portishead.
I really want to check out Aphex Twin, but I am DEFINITELY seeing DeVotchKa.

Switching Man Man and Dredg would take care of that NICELY.

That's too bad dude. I know what you mean though.
When the lineup was first announced I thought "ehh... I have to go though".

But now I'm really looking forward to it.

What DO you want to see on Saturday?

bballarl
03-16-2008, 06:25 PM
My only absolute 100% must-sees are Portishead, Kraftwerk and Aphex Twin.

There is plenty of stuff that would be entertaining. But usually I am making cuts because of conflicts and everything. This year on Saturday might be different. Which isn't such a bad thing, as I can't think of a day during a Coachella I have attended where I have had voluminous spare time.

I figure that GV will book the hardcore bands in succession and book them early on in the day, hence the Turbonegro --> Enter SHikari --> Dredg follow through. Also, Devotchka and Man Man are both weird and folky, so they match up very nice side by side. But yeah, I'm disappointed with how that ended up because I'd like to see both Devotchka and Aphex Twin...

Also, my bias shows, seeing as I fucking hate Calvin Harris, hence why he's playing so goddamn early, lol.

See, I think because they are similar, they GV will try to spread them out a bit. And I need to figure out a better place for Devotchka. I think GV will try to give them a prime spot, either sunset or night.

hahaa.. "Disappointed how it ended up"? You made it!
And I think even though this is fun to think about/predict.. we're definitely not going to be 100% right.
Maybe we could predict all the Main Stagers.

He DJs, but he might do a live soul type thing. I don't think he will though. But that would be awesome.

Flogging Molly will probably get the Against Me! time.

Agreed. 2:30 is way to early for them to play. They are a pretty big name. But as long as they don't conflict with Portishead/Kraftwerk/Aphex Twin, then I am good.
Also, Flogging Molly are not going to conflict with Carbon/Silicon. They would probably skip their own set to watch Carbon/Silicon themselves. I say Carbon/Silicon play around 3 or 4 in the mojave and Flogging Molly play somewhere between 4-6 on the outdoor theatre.

Read the Aphex Twin thread. The booking agency changed the date from the 26th, to the 25th.

Here is my guess. No matter what the set times are the next batch of angry threads will be: WTF was GV thinking, (fill in blank) and (fill in blank) are at the same time??

and the body of the post will be, "Sorry but I just had to say it"

Hahhaa.. seriously.

I promise I will not post any more of this set time stuff once they are announced. There will be no lavish whining and complaining.

I just think it would be cool if we could collaboratively come up with set times that were very similar to the actualy lineup.
Or.. just see how wrong we were.

Saturday is looking better without that can't miss main stage trio of Portishead-Aphex Twin-Kraftwerk.

It will be interesting to see when certain "major" non-headliners get put. ie Hot Chip, Animal Collective, Death Cab. I think we've got them in good spots. Hot Chip at sunset on the outdoor before Portishead goes on. Perfect time to get your trip started and dance a little bit.

If Hot Chip and Death Cab played bore PortiswerkTwin, then it would be two of my least favorite acts at Coachella, followed by 3 of my most anticipated sets at Coachella.

Okay, I'm curious...
For someone to have such a strong opinion of a band, you gotta listen to it a lot right? Or be exposed to it? Where do you hear them from? How well do you know Animal Collective?
I've just seen you say they suck a bunch of times.
