Last year I camped in a small 2 person tent with a friend because we come from the east coast and didn't want bring too much with us. It was a big mistake and I almost passed out from how hot the tent got.

Any experts on what brands/types of tents are the best in the heat?

Go to Target. I bought a nice two person tent that had cross ventilation [which is ABSOLUTELY vital] for $29

As far as strategy goes, this year I'm going to attempt to create shade by a gazebo or tarp mechanism. Last year, the biggest mistake was just propping up a tent and hoping for the best.. Ultimately, it's still going to be disgustingly hot.

Wheres the beef?

I'm going to be doing the same thing. I keep putting off going to walmart for a canopy.

I'll probably post some shop drawings within a week or two.

Yeah, but you need 4 camping spaces for that.

Here's what I got. (http://www.target.com/Greatland-Hexdome-Tent-Green/dp/B000XTNS5C/sr=1-2/qid=1205752275/ref=sr_1_2/602-8587785-7856612?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3AGreatland%20Tent&page=1)

You can't tell because the rainfly is on, but the WHOLE top is mesh. Also, that whole giant front door has a "screen door". And see how the rainfly comes down to the ground on the corners? It's mesh all the way down that wedge.

Plus it's 5'9" in the center, and it doesn't slope down as dramatically as other tents because those two sides "pop-out". I'm 5'8" and I can actually walk around a little bit in there, even with an airbed on the ground.

But the whole thing fits in 2 camping spots- it's 8' x 10' on the floor, and then it bows out another foot on the left and right side.

Sparks? with the extra 2 feet...will the camp staff make a big deal about that or will there be 2 in the tent?

That looks pretty sweet. We have 4 people actually. I just looked again and this is the one we actually got

It's for 2 of us. It would hold 4 easily.

Yeah, with 4 people you have all kinds of great options. But with 3 or less, you're limited to 8 feet on one side. The one I got seems to be the biggest one that's still 8 or less on one side.

does it come with something to cover up the walls?

or is this just gonna be over your tent?

Check this out, its a little pricy, but you dont need an airmattress (i think airmatress are uncomfortable and hard to sleep on. This thing about the size of a queen bed and sets up in seconds.

This (http://www.target.com/Greatland-Backpacking-Tent-Blue/dp/B000XTMD9O/qid=1205876754/ref=br_1_15/601-0451452-7837743?ie=UTF8&node=1042162&frombrowse=1&pricerange=&index=tgt-mf-mv&field-browse=1042162&rank=pmrank&rh=&page=2) is what I got. The top of this tent is mesh as well. The only downside is it's 7x9 I think. It's in a kind of hexagonal shape, so I'm hoping I wont hear it from the camping crew

Everyone: Make sure to get a tent with a GLORY HOLE.

This should come in handy...

Is a tent for 4 people going to be within the boundaries? I know they gave the dimensions and what not and it would depend on the tent...but generally...are 4 people tents within the boundaries? Or is it better to bring two 2 person tents to be safe?

ATTN JCLEMY: does the mesh siding provide very good shade though...? it seems like it wouldn't.

Well, first of all, my tent is supposedly a SIX person tent, but, you be packed like sardines.

We also have a "4 person tent" that's exactly 8 x 8. So don't go by what it says on the box. Two person tents are tiny.

With 4 camping tickets, you should be able to get a 16 x 16 square. MOST tents are smaller than that, even the ones with "two rooms".

That said, if you arrive late, finding a full 16 x 16 square might be tough. But as long as you have 4 or more people staying in one tent, tent size shouldn't be an issue.

we have the same exact tent, AND a 10x10 canopy to put over it. it is a really good sized tent for just the 2 of us, plus i was suprised that if you take the rainfly off the whole thing is mostly mesh.

i'm bringing a couple tarps, one for the ground and one to set up on top if need be...but by the sounds of things its going to be so hot and dry that i won't really need shelter right?
also, for anyone who knows the on-site camp ground, are there a lot of trees around? i wouldn't mind one to either drape a tarp over a branch or hang a hammock or something.

Bud Luster
03-22-2008, 03:21 PM
pretty much no trees at all. Its going to be so hot the you will need shelter from the sun. better bring something to hold that tarp up.

It's just for shade above us. Last year we didn't bring anything so it was really hot with nothing to sit under in the mornings. We're going to set up our actual tent underneath.

You don't really need to bother putting anything under your tent. It's super dry. It also gets pretty windy so be prepared for that. Shade is something that is almost necessary.

all good advice. shitty about the lack of flora, woulda been nice to chill in my hammock a little.
i think a nylon tarp might be kinda heavy and really hot, any other ideas on something to provide shelter that runs along the same lines? not a tent though, but maybe some sort of canopy?
cheers!

It's not anything like regular camping. Your in an 8x8 space with loads of others around you. Not really a hammock relaxing place.

true enough, i guess the hammock will have to stay packed away for another month :(

I got some standard 8x8 Coleman dome tent at Big 5 on the way to Coachella 2005. It was on sale for 29.99. I had my tent from the previous year, but for some reason the poles didn't make it into storage.
