he's right. We've had to deal with "GV sold out coachella to APW" bullshit for like 2 months. fuck you all.

I never thought APW would interfere with Coachella's lineup "quality". I was hoping it would be better, but it ended up to be an expensive Radiohead festival.

However, even with the new addition of Aphex Twin for Coachella, it doesn't take a genius to realize that the approach for THIS year's Coachella has been rather "weird".

thelastgreatman
03-11-2008, 10:13 PM
Sure, weird. I mean, they got an incredibly rare and legendary reunion, the most historic of all EDM acts, the genius behind the most famous live rock concerts ever, several other quality reunions and a slew of promising new acts.

And no repeat headliners. I'll take this weirdness over the generic choices of most of the other years, especially 2007.

why all of a sudden are we talking about apw, I thought we covered this once we knew apw's lineup....its gv's vegoose.

There is no doubt about Coachella having some unique headliners. But what about all the repeat acts: Justice, Hotchip, Gogol Bordello and so forth... I've seen them all, and they're all great. But I expect a level of "freshness" for Coachella to bring every year and I'm certainly not feeling nor seeing it like years of past. Same can be said for Roger Waters. Sure he didnt play Coachella last year, but damn, he played damn near everywhere last year. So what is so unique and awesome with him playing Coachella? (and dont give me that "its Pink Flyod you dumb fuck"...thats weak sauce and if anything leads me to think you dont have a very "deep" taste of music.) On the other hand, if it was Pinky Floyd reuniting, thats a whole different story.

Look I went through all of that with out mentioning Jack Johnson....

....oh wait

I think there are maybe 7-9 acts out of 120+ that are repeats from last year.

No freshness? Aphex Twin? Portishead? Kraftwerk? The fucking Verve? When was the last time any of THEM played a concert stateside?

There are arguments to be made against this year's lineup (one, basically: no big popular midtier-to-headliner draws- but many people see that as a benefit), but a lack of freshness just doesn't hold up. When the lineup dropped, I had heard of less than half of the artists. That's fresh if I ever saw it.

Justice, Gogol Bordello, and Hot Chip, all hold fairly "high" positions on the lineup. They're taking up what could have been "fresher" (in terms of not being involved with Coachella for a while) acts like: Deltron 3030, The Charlatans (uk), or The Hives.

Along with it, Justice and Hot Chip are followed by several similar acts, to their style of music: Simian Mobile Disco, Busy P, Sebastian, Kavinsky, Uffie, Cut Copy, Erol Alkan, Diplo, and man, many, more...

There is no doubt about Coachella having some unique headliners. But what about all the repeat acts: Justice, Hotchip, Gogol Bordello and so forth...

Why do people act like there's only one stage at Coachella? Gogol's set last year was one of the most talked about last year, but 95% of the people there didn't see it. Hot Chip...95% didn't see them, though they didn't have as much competition as Gogol did. They both have new albums.

Justice is a little more of a puzzler- sounds like they're not bringing much new to the table, and I've heard they played to a semi-sparse crowd. But hey...I didn't see them, and now I'm at least curious.

In any case, if you're sick of these acts...go elsewhere! It will make room for someone who missed them last time!

Realistically, how many acts can you see in a day? If you run around like a madman and see partial sets...40%? And that's a crazy high, unrealistic number. But until the number of repeat acts passes 60%...shut the fuck up.

Aphex Twin and Redd Kross? I promise nothing but kind words from here on out, GV.

They're taking up what could have been "fresher" (in terms of not being involved with Coachella for a while) acts like... The Charlatans (uk)

Hey, I already saw The Charlatans, like 16 years ago, so I don't want them there. They would be taking up a spot that could have been filled by (insert personal opinion here)

That was sarcasm, BTW.

I gotta give you a point here, I do hear a lot of "sameness" when I listen to some of the stuff I'm unfamiliar with. But again...just go to a different stage!

I just hope everyone completely let down doesnt show up at the fest...I really dont want to be standing in a crowd and have to hear someone saying to a newbie, "yeah coachella is fun but this year is just weak compared to past years...you should have come then. I go every year just because I'm a vet though"

I'll stomp on your foot and poke both your eyes and take the newbie away from you.

as far as sameness goes, its just more focused on EDM this year, earlier years had a bigger focus on dance as well then it shifted to rock. eb and flow I suppose

This pretty much summed up my thoughts on this years Coachella as well. As a whole it's just a really weak year. I mean they'll be good bands their, but most of them I'll have seen at least once before.

at the outset I saw 40% of the lineup. That went down with adds like kate, adele and yelle oh also Serg (but I dont care about that one much)

Bosco is just upset because he would've rather had the Chemical Brothers play for the tenth time.

how's that for freshness?

amyzzz
03-12-2008, 03:17 PM
I'm still upset we couldn't have Radiohead for Coachella (they're playing damn near all the festivals in August), but that's more Radiohead's fault, damn them.

people are such whiny bitches. I've been going to Coachella since 2002 and i'm excited about this lineup more than many of the past. What's with people whining about things like Roger Waters having already done a tour as Dark Side of the Moon? How does that devalue it in any way? People whining about things like that are the same people who get off on saying they saw some band at a small club before they were big; now they don't like that band any more because they are popular. whiny bitches!

Aphex Twin, Goldfrapp, Kate Nash, Serj Tankian, Redd Kross and Adele have joined the lineup for the 2008 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival...

In related news, music fans on the East Coast shouldn't expect to see any acts added to the lineup to the first All Points West Music & Arts Festival...

"That's what it's going to be right there," Goldenvoice president Paul Tollett tells Billboard.com.

Coachella Adds To Lineup, All Points Doesn’t

West Coast: Welcome. East Coast: Fuck off. That’s pretty much what promoters decided after it was announced today that Aphex Twin, Goldfrapp, Kate Nash, Serj Tankian (of System of a Down) and Adele were added to California’s already lengthy lineup at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival while New Jersey’s All Points West Festival remains the same with half the number of acts.

Both festivals, spanning over three days, boast just one impressive headline act with Coachella getting Portishead and All Points getting two nights of Radiohead – both evenings of which are sold out. The president of the company backing both festivals told Billboard "That's what it's going to be right there. That show is half the size of other festivals."

Besides the fact that Radiohead is playing, everyone on the East Coast has complained about the rest of the lineup, which includes Kings of Leon, Cat Power, CSS and The New Pornographers. Considering New York gets to pretty much see every musical act that tours, I guess we can’t complain too much. But freaking Aphex Twin?
