So awesome. And free!

This is especially a great solution for the 18-21 age group who aren't old enough to rent a car.

Also I hope this encourages people from San Diego/Sacramento/wherever to save gas and take the train instead of driving. Although I'm a little concerned about Amtrak trains running late and causing people to miss their connection. But maybe Amtrak is better than it used to be about that sort of thing?

This is so fucking awesome! Wow. Many thanks to Goldenvoice for this. I actually considered amtrak this year but their site kept telling me there was no route from LA to Indio. This is a million better than Greyhound. I'd definitely pay more than the Greyhound fee for this service, and it's FREE? Incredible.

I'm getting 404 errors when I click submit...anyone else?

by the ticketmaster confirmation code you mean the order number? and by ticket barcode you mean any of the three ticket barcodes?

psychic friend
03-11-2008, 10:26 PM
if you have a confirmation number then you can use order number, we can tell whats up.

if you mean barcode, if it is a 3-day ticket you can use one and we can tell.

this is absolutely perfect.
the flyaway is super easy to find at the airport, and super cheap,
and downtown union is a beautiful old station.
AND, I'm thinking the train out into the desert will be an awesome experience.
THANK YOU endlessly for this, PF and co. this was really the single missing link in this festival being truly accessible to younger travelers.

and as an afterthought,
HOW MUCH OF A FUCKING PARTY IS THIS TRAIN GOING TO BE?!

If work is a problem, people can still take the greyhound or carpool or drive. I mean, the alternative is there not being any train at all. I guess the train times could be later in the day, but imagine hundreds of train people arriving at the same time as everyone else. Those camp check-in lines are insane at night.

I wonder how many people can fit on the train. God, this is going to be the best of times. Really hope everyone sings on the train, that would be epic.

I would have gladly paid $25 each way for this service, but free? That's insane.

There is no train from Phoenix to Flagstaff. Actually, I don't think Amtrak goes through Phoenix at all. Depending on where you're going, you have to start in Flagstaff or Tucson. I might be wrong about that, but there's definitely no train to Flagstaff. They use buses to connect major cities. Actually, they use buses for lots of reasons. I missed a train out of San Luis Obispo once- it was their fault, and I would have missed the train back to Flagstaff, so they put me on a bus to Santa Barbara and I caught one out of there.

I looked into taking a train across the south once, maybe to New Orleans, and it always involved a bus somewhere. The train that runs through Flagstaff goes from LA to Chicago. You have to take the more southern route that runs through Tucson.

it's super lame that some stupid people don't camp onsite

even if we all wanted to, there's not enough room for everyone in the campsite.

then again, the same can be said about the train.

besides even if they allowed others to take the train, you'd still need a car in palm springs. so it really doesn't make much sense for non-campers to take the train.

M Sparks
03-13-2008, 08:38 AM
yea dude there building a temp platform..thats just crazy...does that mean laying new tracks too and stuff? is there an existing track that goes to indio?

They just need a place nearby that's accessible to the buses. The tracks run alongside I-10.

There's an Amtrak stop called Grand Canyon Junction thats literally a cement pad in the middle of the forest. Twice a day, the Grand Canyon Railroad drives a van out there and waits for the train to come by to pick up people who want to take the train to the Canyon.

Exactly, they even search your bags with dogs at the greyhound in LA. It is not Coachella's fault. I think there will be room on the train when people decide to drive themselves and save the hassle.

Not that I am endorsing trying to sneak stuff on or anything but while I have no doubt that they will search any bags you take on I really can't see them using a k-9 on each person who comes by. I can't think of a single situation ever where I saw someone going through a k-9 screening in the same way as a metal detector or pat down. I mean some people are allergic or deathly afraid of dogs. I could be totally wrong here and please someone speak up and prove me wrong.

yeah.. In the interests of trying to parse words and probably getting arrested for playing "lawyer-ball", as Hank Hill calls it, but what are we supposed to do with a cooler for example? If it were checked, instead of brought "onto the train" (passenger area?)....

Full of only trail mix, water bottles that contain "water", and various "flavors" of organic fruit juices of course.

Can we check that into baggage?

Also, do K-9's really sniff out booze?

ok... since I am going alone this year (people have lives, jobs, kids, wtf! I have COACHELLA ;-) I had really considered not packing "tons o drugs" this year... Just a little stray molly, a 1/4 of some weed, a touch (less than a g) of blow, and maybe a handle of booze cause Im nit much of a drinker.

of course, I signed a release form in order to get a ride this year, so now Im kinda hosed.

K9s can be trained to smell pretty much anything and can also be trained to bark at suspicous people. so a K9 unit can target pretty much whoever. and if they are wrong, blame it on the dog, can't charge it with misconduct or whatever...but you can get charged with assault on police officer if you hit it (edit:the dog) or worse.

I didn't see them search anyone the last two times I've taken the Greyhound out of LA.

But WILL they be checking for alcohol? PF?

Yea, same here. I have never seen a search at a greyhound.

I still think that it's somewhat of a scare tactic. I remember last year's campground security check consisted of asking if I had glass in my bags and a half assed pat on the sides.

I take the Amtrak to San Diego from LA at least once a month and there are never any police search areas, let alone dogs. I think this is special because of the situation and they probably assume because it's a concert, all us crazy kids will be loaded with goodies. I won't be bringing booze with me, but there is a bar on the train, as well as a bar in Union station called "Traxx". I know I will be hittin' the sauce at 9 am...

prettydirtything
04-23-2008, 07:53 PM
My only upset at this point is that if the check in time was 12:30, I could leave san diego 1.5 hours later. I am leaving San Diego tomorrow morning on the 8:20am train to get to LA by 11:59am, and then Indio by 6pm!!??

lol

And this is Amtracks way of telling us too take trains?? Oh, and im using the bus and then the trolley to get to the San Diego train station, so tack another hour on the front end!

Last word I heard on trainchella is some of the Amtrak people said it went really well this year and they'd love to have it again next year. No idea what will happen next year, though. I really hope we get a new site/info launch soon to hold us over until the lineup is announced.

I will just ask here and bump it. No plans to do this again? I thought this was one of best things Coachella did that I missed. And I want to correct it once it happens again (that is, if I am flying to California as usual or to LAX from somewhere). Though I might miss the convenience of car camping if I go without a rental car.
