They don't come over from Germany that often, so its not surprising they are doing a mini-tour.

Their also going to headline a new festival by Superfly & Goldenvoice in Omaha, Nebraska with Radiohead and Jack Johnson. It will be a 9 day festival. Single day tickets may or may not be sold. Radiohead will perform 5 of the 9 nights.

Go see Kraftwerk, and get in touch with your inner robot
By Ricardo Baca
Denver Post Pop Music Critic
Article Last Updated: 04/17/2008 08:14:57 PM MDT

You don't have to be a child of the '70s or '80s to appreciate the music of Kraftwerk, the seminal German electronic outfit known for its groundbreaking production and seemingly endless influence.

Turn on the radio, and you'll still hear the group's tremendous sway — in hip-hop, pop and electronic — and their shows are fittingly odd, robotic manifestations of their dancey yet technical outings. The group will play a rare U.S. date at the Fillmore Auditorium on Wednesday, just a few days before it headlines one of the dance tents at the Coachella Festival in Southern California.

Five things you need to know about Kraftwerk.

1. Kraftwerk, a jam band? True, Kraftwerk is best-known and loved as the German torchbearers of synth-rooted electronic music. But did you know the group found its start playing free-form rock music with traditional instrumentation? Who needs hooks and choruses when you have "Kraftwerk" and "Kraftwerk 2," the two instrumental records that kickstarted the band's career. The vocoder was first used by the group — along with the first appearance of lyrics and vocals — in 1973's "Ralf und Florian," a record of synthesizers and drum machines.

2. Artful beginnings and far reach. Kraftwerk was founded in 1970 by two students at the Düsseldorf Conservatory, Florian Schneider and Ralf Hütter. Over the years, they've collaborated with many musicians under the banner of Kraftwerk — but they've rarely participated in outside collaborations. (Coldplay asked for and received permission to sample the band's music. Pioneering hip-hopper Afrika Bambaataa didn't ask for permission and was sued.) Even though the band has taken long respites from touring and recording, its reach is impressive. The group has influenced artists as varied as David Bowie and Devo, Depeche Mode and Front 242, Joy Division and Thomas Dolby.

3. A smashing breakthrough. After the foreshadowing of "Ralf und Florian" came the group's defining record, "Autobahn," a record about postwar life in Germany that attracted a worldwide audience. It wasn't the original, 22-minute title track that brought in the mass love, rather it was the cut-down, 3-minute "Autobahn" single that was sent to radio. The song connected with something amid the masses, and it also gave a new face to Germany, as the record (and its many new sounds) was one of the most influential landmarks of the mid-1970s.

4. Recent loss. Drummer Klaus Dinger, who played in an early incarnation of Kraftwerk, died in late March. The drummer, along with guitarist Michael Rother, left Kraftwerk in the early '70s to create Neu!, another German band that became known for its mechanical approach to rock music.

5. Live performance. It's fair to say that some of the biggest names in European dance music — from Daft Punk to their heir apparent, Justice — got their whole live shtick from Kraftwerk. The music is all about the exactness of electronic beats and timed synthesized elements, so it's natural that much of the show will be tracked, pre-recorded. But some of it is live, and figuring out which parts are live and which aren't is part of the fun, especially since Kraftwerk, presented as a stoic four-piece lineup since the mid '70s, hardly moves or strays from its symmetrical lineup during the course of a show.

Here are some pics from tonight's Milwaukee show. No real surprises in the setlist - started with Man Machine, finished with Music Non-Stop. Oh, there was that version of Wannabe by the Spice Girls on MiniMoog and Vocoder that the cheeky German scamps pulled out!

They didn't play Pocket Calculator/Dentaku which was a shame, but other than that the biggest surprise was no Florian. He was replaced by a guy on Laptop #4 that is apparently called Stefan Pfaffe.

Not the greatest camera, but there ya go...

Hey nice pics Mr. Co- Pilot,

I was all the way in front at the barrier, perfectly in line with the new member (kinda looks like a blone tiesto....)

Pretty good show. I was really surprised by the age of the crowd that they brought in. (alot of "old" people, but then again, so are they, so its all good... :P)

Radioactivity was perfected. Crowd went nutz. Cant wait to hear that shizzy again this Saturday.

New guy seems to love the song Trans Europe Express

Thats about it. Really good show, other then my car falling apart on the way home and making a 2 hour trip home into a 7 hour trip.

Oh yeah, v"E"et-amins are a must for the show on Saturday night.... not that I really need to inform you guys about that type of thing...

And by "old" I'm guessing you mean "all those who bought the music the first time it came out!"

Glad you had a good time, and that nobody ruined your night by asking the noisy German kids to turn that bloody racket down!

Sucks that you had cartrouble on the way home, though.

And by "old" I'm guessing you mean "all those who bought the music the first time it came out!"

Hehe, actually, I enjoy the Older crowd :P

But the weirdest fan I talked to at the show was this mid 40's looking pampered soccer Mom from Tennessee with a southern "twang" (Never would have even thought she was a fan). She mentioned that "The Man-Machine" was her first album, and fell in love with the group instantly when she was a kid. She just so happened to be visiting some relatives in Chicago and heard Kraftwerk was playing Milwaukee and of course ended up going to the show last night.

There was a lot of kids in the crowd too. A little girl with her parents at her first concert, that stood right next to me, was dying to hear Pocket Calculator...Oh well, she seemed to have a great time anyways.

Hey John Peel, did they play "Radioactivity" or "The Robots"

Both. Radioactivity was the highlight of the night for me, the crowd went crazy for it. It was a shorter version of the remix that is on Minimum Maximum, but for some reason that was the tune of the night that seemed to push our buttons the hardest.

They came back for the first encore with The Robots, with the "Robots playing the track" schtick, which, even though you know it's coming, still makes you smile!
