I got the Pitchfork e-mail this morning. They addressed me as "dear friend" which made me feel all warm and fuzzy.

I want to go to this. And it's $65 for a three day pass! So much win. Tickets go on sale Wednesday.

If they aren't playing SF in the near future, I will go to this. Because Spiritualized is the same day, and that is totally sweet.

I'm so fuckin' there. Best run fest in the US. Water's a dollar, you can see every band pretty much, and the people there were all awesome. I prefer Coachella overall, but this one's special. Seeing Spiritualized (that'll be electric too, they said this is around when the Electric Mainlines tour will start) and Boris on the same day will be one of those things you can't do too often.

They were disappointing at Vegoose. Late to start and wasted too much time on their 'fuck bush' rants. Yeah, we know, we all hate the guy BUT PLAY YOUR DAMN SONGS.

Hey bmack, do you remember the name of the hostel you stayed at? Was it close to the venue?

bmack86
03-10-2008, 05:08 PM
it was the Hostelling international one in the loop. It's not overly close to the venue, but you can the the L, and there's a stop one block away from both the Hostel and the venue. It works like magic.

hmm...I can get roundtrip flight for ~$286 and at ~$25 a night that's about $400. With a 3-day pass coating ~$60 bucks I could do it for ~$500. All I would need is money for food and booze. I need to start saving.

Hardly any money for food and booze. Beer was 3 dollars in fest grounds last year, and the average meal was 4-5 dollars for damn good food. I spent 200 over the whole weekend for food, alcohol, water and albums.

Pretty good lineup. Wait, JARVIS FUCKING COCKER???! Okay, I'm going.

Why is Animal Collective billed above him, though? He was billed higher than Animal Collective is at Coachella this year. Oh, right, pitchfork. But fuck the details.

Checking flights now. Hopefully they aren't as expensive as they are during Lollapalooza.

$434 on airtran? Uh oh. Cheapest on Expedia is $382. It costs almost half as much to fly to Florida, wtf? Okay, I'll keep searching for cheaper. The fact that a 3 day pass is only $65 is a bargain. I mean, it would cost that much just to see Spiritualized and Public Enemy.

$340 if I depart Sunday, but there are several bands I want to see on Sunday.

O'Hare is disgusting. Wouldn't you rather fly into Midway? It's smaller, more manageable, and quicker to get into the city.

I really wish I lived in Chicago so going to Pitchfork Fest made sense. It's so cheap...c'est la vie.

I remember last year for my friend's wedding nine of my friends flew into Chicago from LA. Tickets cost $400. It was out of control, and we never found anything cheaper.

I think the only way to save money on a flight to chicago is to purchase on southwest many months in advance (like, 6 months). For some reason, flying to Chicago during the summer is intensely expensive.

Pitchfork is a fun time, but the place is small.

I live in Chicago and have been to pitchfork multiple times. The sound is never really that good because it is a residential neighborhood. Plus you get the hardcorest hipsters around Chicago who show up.

Please don't travel out of your way to Pitchfork, you might be greatly disappointed.

mountmccabe
04-06-2008, 05:24 PM
This isn't for LA but from Phoenix I'm seeing that if I go with ridiculous red-eye flights they start at $280 but flights at more reasonable times can be had for $324.

york707
04-06-2008, 05:35 PM
This day in age, for flights that are only 90 minutes or longer, I think if you can find a flight for $300, that's pretty good.

bmack86
04-06-2008, 10:19 PM
I just found a round trip flight that, after all taxes and fees, comes to 323 dollars. That's with an hour layover in SLC, and you get in at 9PM to O'Hare, then have a redeye back. It sounds like that'll probably be what I do.

Go to www.cheapoair.com and you'll find some choice deals.

A flight from Bumfuck, Virginia to Los Angeles is $99 plus taxes. One way, yeah, but a round trip is just double that. Which is still almost half what it costs to fly from LA to a far less obscure, and far closer destination. It's a fucking ripoff, plain and simple.

pitchfork is always a good time, and worth the money even if I didn't like the lineup. (5 minute el ride)

have you folks looking for cheaper airfare checked out jetblue? they don't go through lax but long beach instead, thats what i take to go to coachella, it's usually quite a bit cheaper.

I'm talking about big arilines and without flexible dates. Of course if you are lucky enough to be served by an obscure airline that only flies to 5 cities on teh cheap and you happen to actually want to go to one of thos ecities, then good for you.

My mom works for JetBlue. Being the son of a flight attendant FTW. Free flights to Chicago, just have to drive to Long Beach. Will use this for Lollapalooza and I might try to get out to Pitchfork as well. Though they are pretty close in dates.

i hit up PF last year and enjoyed how cheap it was. also liked the double alternating main stage setup with how close they were together. but the sound did suck at times being where it was. Brightblack Morning Light was fucking awesome despite the traffic right by.

word. there's a reason it's only $65.

It's just on a different level than Coachella or Bonnaroo or Lolla. If you're expecting a copy of those massive fests then sure, you'll be disappointed. They're not trying to be that huge.

But 18,000 people per day isn't small.

And, if you ask me, they've had a great line-up every year.

We are driving back to Chicago early Sunday morning for the show. My good friend is having a pre-BBQ because she lives down the street from the event. Any Coachella like minds are more than welcome to join us. We will probably be partying there again after the show as well. PM if you want my number to chill. Probably be there 11 am - 3 pm.
