View Full Version : Who Could Realistically Be Added?

starrdogg

There have been rumors galore about who might still be added to Coachella, but most have been proven wrong, (Smashing Pumpkins, Daft Punk, Gwen Stefani, The Shins, The Knife, etc) and we're just going to have to wait until after the Grammys on The Police. My question is, what other bands could actually be added to Coachella this year? I really can't think of too many medium-sized bands that could be added who would draw in more people. All I can come up with is Modest Mouse and Queens of the Stone Age. Who else could possibly be added?

Belle & Sebastian played in both '02 and '04, but I'd doubt they'd play this year as they're not really promoting or touring for an album this year. It just doesn't make much sense for us to expect them. Modest Mouse? The Avalanches? Wilco? QOTSA? At least they all have new albums coming out to tour behind.

I'm hoping that we hear something regarding additions in the next week or two. Last year, both Massive Attack and Daft Punk were added on Feb. 7. That makes me optimistic that we'll hear something soon. Last year there were 47 artists/bands on Saturday and 49 on Sunday. This year, so far, there are 33 artists/bands on Friday, 40 on Saturday and 38 on Sunday. This leads me to believe that bands will definitely be added, and it will likely be more than just 1 or 2, however some will probably be incredibly small acts.

The impression that I've gotten is that with the move to three days they also decided to go for longer sets. We're not going to get to near 47 bands per day.

I would be shocked if we got anybody real big - say first row or two on the poster - and I'd also be surprised it there were more than 10 bands added counting of Montreal if that's a real add.

I agree that we probably will not be at about 47 bands a day. Probably just up to 40 bands a day, which is fine. Longer sets would be neat. However, I do think that we will have at least one or two BIG acts added. I think GV wants Friday to sell out too. It would really make the move to 3 days even more worth the move to 3 days. So I think they are at least trying to find an appealing act to add on Friday. I personally think Friday already has a crowded 1st and 2nd row, with possible conflicts I want to avoid... But that day is not selling as well as the other two, and GV would probably want to fix that.

Did you guys see Modest Mouse being voted to play ATP the next weekend? So was Mogwai. I thought that was neat. Not that it has anything to do with Coachella.

Good stuff. Let's just hope they dump their sound guy on the side of the road somewhere. I saw them @ The Great American in SF this past Friday and left before the end. They're a great whimsical band with an 80's kitsch/glam stage presence (though so musically transcendent of that silliness), but their sound guy telling us they are supposed to sound like they did (poo) because they are a "low-fi" band is a load of poo too. We weren't the only ones walking out early, unfortunately. I'm all over giving it a second chance, though. Hissing Fauna.. is THAT good a record.

In other comments, I think a Postal Service booking is just what the doctor ordered to kick start ticket sales again-- barring, of course, a Portishead announcement with a giant Golden-Voice-rules-the-freaking-festival-circuit bow on top...

Pearl Jam would be amazing on friday, and it will help the selling problems

That would be the single greatest addition, IMO. Pearl Jam put on the best show I've ever seen. There's something to be said about a band that can still put on a show like that without any flash or pyro or whatever, just music.

Muse will not be added to Coachella this year:
April 27 - Merriweather Post Pavilion, Washington, DC
April 28 - William & Mary, Williamsburg, VA
April 29 - Bryce Jordan Center, State College, PA

They will be opening for horrible emo band My Chemical Romance on these dates. Ugh, what sellouts.

i cant believe they're opening for my chemical romance. how could they agree to that?!

I believe the reason behind that is because at the time, they had an LA show coming up. If they had announced they were going to be at Coachella before their LA show, their ticket sales would probably drop. Now I'm assuming they'll announce it sometime within a month.

Underworld should definitely headline Sahara, preferably Saturday night. I saw them at Field Day Fest, that disaster of a concert that was supposed to be a two day campout in upstate New York and got moved to one day in Giants Stadium, and to top it all it ended up being a bitter cold rainy-as-fuck day in the middle of June, so everyone was just miserable for the first six hours, not into the music at all. Then Underworld came on, and they rocked the seriously unhappy crowd so hard that hundreds of people were jumping down from the bleachers to get their rave on in the middle of a cold downpour. Impressive, to say the least.

I don't see what My Bloody Valentine is planning for the USA, but the only problem is an appearance by them at Coachella would be a month or so before their concerts in London, etc. Then again, they're Irish and Kevin Shields is American, so I don't see why it'd be a problem for them to do Coachella.
