Seeing as I live a few hours away, this festival will be on my hit list.

---
Apparently, the Foo Fighters are rumored to be headlining a night.

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/postrock/2008/02/official_virgin_festival_predi.html

read one of the blog posts...

Foo Fighters are as good as confirmed headliners.
Elliot on DC101 slipped up and announced that the Foo Fighters are headlining this year's VirginFest after talking to the actress that plays Karen on The Office. They asked her about being in the FF video, then after the interview played "Long Road to Ruin."
When they came back in, Elliot said "Foo Fighters will be your headliner at Virgin Fest this year....I'm not supposed to say that? Ok, well all we know are the dates. But, yeah...Foo Fighters will be your headliner.

Not an official confirmation, but a somewhat believable rumor nonetheless.

So, lets let the speculation start.

Anybody else have some logical predictions?

RH is friday and saturday, article mightve missed that typo. Well if its Foos headlining a day, that sure blows RH out of the water. It can work with the schedule they have though since they arein St Louis on July 20th so far. They just have to hang around for 3 more weeks in the midwest and east coast.

if foo's are playing a day i may try and head down there from jersey, i have an uncle who lives in virginia right outside of d.c., so baltimore is def. doable.

it is looking like this trip will be pretty cheap for me. just signed up for a new credit card that gives me 25,000 miles on american, plus i already have close to 40,000. so airfare is free, tickets are free, my portion of the hotel will probably be around $300...not too shabby, especially since we have a kid due in late august, will be nice to not blow a big chunk of my savings on the trip.

I just read in this blog (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/postrock/2008/02/post.html) that a radio station confirmed Rage Against the Machine as a lock.

If thats the case, then so far we have (heavily rumored)

Foo Fighters
Rage Against the Machine

Dare I say that sounds terrible. Rage is an overhyped machine playing the same setlist they have been rockin' since 1999 and the Foo Fighters are hardly exciting.

Well, its not like they played alot of shows between 1999 and 2007. And, i'm sure that a fair amount of fans at their new shows were too young to see them 8 years ago. I have yet to see RATM, and would love to, so if this is the case, its really good news for me.

Foo Fighters are ok, I probably wont watch them unless no one else I want to see is on.

Confirmed:
- Rabbit in the Moon (via myspace)

Highly Rumored:
- Foo Fighters (local DC radio station said they were set to headline)
- Rage Against the Machine (same as Foo Fighters, supposed to play Vineland)
- Stone Temple Pilots (supposed to play Vineland)
- Wilco (will be on east coast 2 days before festival)

I'm going to have to make a decision between APW and V fest. It's going to be my last show before I move back to Cali, so Radiohead in New York is kind hard to turn down. But if Virgin Festival has a comparable line up I'll consider it.

Totally agree. But, despite the lineup, I will probably go no matter what.

Virgin Fest in Baltimore is special to me. Last year I went, and had an amazing time. It was my first actual music festival, and it was quite a weekend for me. I know coachella is just on a higher level, but VFest will always be special to me. Also, its just a couple hours drive. And, as one of the few east coasters on the board, I feel that VFest is "my" festival. So yeah, I will most likely be there this year, no matter what. It would take a really bad lineup to turn me away.

Been to both previous Vfests in Baltimore and will go again this year. It doesn't compare to Coachella, but it's only an hour drive for me, so works well with my budget. Plus I've gotten to see several artist I wanted to see live both years.

Betao, How was it last year? I almost went but it just never really happened. I kept thinking that I would be disappointed. I have become spoiled by Coachella.

I had a kick ass time, but have nothing really to compare it to.

Heres what I can say:

Saturday was more crowded than Sunday, I want to say it was no more than 35,000 people. So that gives you an idea of its attendance.

Also, it was easy to get close to the stage (especially in the dance tent).

There is a 10 PM curfew (noise ordinance is my guess), but it didn't really bother me.

Everything, for the most part, went on schedule. I had no real problems whatsoever. The set times weren't the greatest (conflicts like The Police vs Modest Mouse, Smashing Pumpkins vs 311), but they were ok for me. The people were friendly as well.

I stayed in a hotel, but will be staying with a friend who lives in Baltimore this year. Also, I think the city worked out its transportation well for the festival. My friends and I had no real problems getting too and from the festival.

CuervoPH
03-21-2008, 09:29 PM
I stayed in hotel the past two years, but only cause I had a friend fly up and attend with me. If she doesn't come this year, I'll probably just drive back to PA each night rather than get a hotel.

Oh yeah, and city transportation didn't work so well for us last year. We spent quite a bit of time waiting for a shuttle that never showed. Oh well. The walking probably did us good.

Depending on where in PA it might not be horrible. Some parts would definitely be 2 hours or less going back, I think. Last year me and my homie couldn't sleep for FUCK either night. I walked around the goddamn hotel for hours just to randomly run into other festival people and ask if they had a fucking joint I could buy so we could get to sleep, and nothing. Finally at like 4 am we decided to head to the diner, and just as we're pulling out a couple of black-as-fuck dudes both in big white t's and driving an Acura pulled in. I was like, "Yo, back the fuck up--they're selling." Thank god the east coast. I can smell dope blocks like a bloodhound, we should've just gotten in the car and drove back into B-more.

also, i just read this from a blog, regarding the lineup :

"Virgin had hoped to be making an announcement the beginning of this week, but apparently negotiations are still on-going with a couple potential headliner’s. one guess is stp, as they’re still in the process of mapping out their summer tour in it’s entirety, so i can see how booking them would hold thing’s up a bit. the other, i would like to think would be nin. they’re a little tougher than a phone call to book, but since they’ll be @lolla the previous weekend, i don’t see why branson can’t pull off trent playing another gig the following wknd. especially since he so rarely plays east coast usa. none-the-less, as of now, i’m being told they hope to have an announcement sometime next week, which in reality is right on course with last year. just seems like it’s coming late because with a plethora of festivals now, alot of them started booking very early. i’m on the virgin (baltimore) street team so when i find out, i’ll hit you guys with what i know (though you’ll prob know b4 me anyway haha).

my money is on branson making a run at stp & nin or ratm to team with the muse and foo fighters as the “headliners” of the bill…i’d also expect q.o.t.s.a, and possibly chris cornell…and probably jack johnson just by force of nature…"

Exactly what I was thinking man.

Hmmm... Last year, V-Fest in Vancouver was in May. But this year, the dates aren't even anounced yet, let a lone a line up. I have a feeling the our V-fest won't be until October or something.
It is also weird Toronto got their line up before Calgary. Calgary is in June. I am guessing the Vancouver and Calgary shows get thier line ups anounced in the next week or two. I wouldn't be surprised if The Foo Fighters are at both of those too.

I also read somewhere else that Bloc Party is confirmed. There are also some RATM and STP rumors flying about. If all of the above is true, that is a huge step up from last year.

It's the same thing with Outside Lands, JJ billed above Wilco and Beck. It just can't be explained.

It's the same thing with Outside Lands, JJ billed above Wilco and Beck. It just can't be explained.

Yeah it can. He sells better. More people would pay more money to go to one of his shows. Thus, headliner over them.

Not saying he's better, but financially speaking, he's certainly a headliner over wilco and beck. Get objective, people. Just 'cause you hate him (and I'm pretty much with you on that) doesn't mean he doesn't deserve his spot. I mean shit, I wouldn't be surprised if he's got the top selling rock album at the end of the year.

Meanwhile, those are some pretty sweet headliners, to me. Foos put on a great show, I count myself a Kanye and STP fan, and though I don't like most NIN, their show is solid. Can't wait to see the rest of the lineup. I wish this festival had started 5 years ago, back when I actually lived in DC.

Sunday:

NIN
STP

Well, I must say, wow. So the STP rumors were indeed true.

So that makes confirmed bands:

Nine Inch Nails
Foo Fighters
Jack Johnson
Stone Temple Pilots
Kanye West
Pendulum (live)
Rabbit in the Moon (live)
Deadmau5

You guys can bash this all you want and take shots at JJ, but that is pretty damn sick for just a 2 day festival. Also, don't forget, Muse is still heavily rumored.

pretty decent... at least I dont have to worry that Vfest in Vancouver will be Jack Johnson, being that he is playing Aug 21st here... so.... I bet it will be Linkin Park and STP... a vancouver NIN show would be perfect though.

When is V fest in Vancouver?

Well last year, it was in May and the lineup was anounced early Febuary. It obviously isn't happening that weekend this year. So I am guessing, for no other real reason, it will be in August.
And if it is on the weekend of 16/17 or 23/24, I see no reason as to why Radiohead couldn't play. That is, depending on which way Radioheads tour schedule goes and... of course... whenever V-fest in Vancouver is.

The EDM lineup last year was not to shabby at all. Infected Mushroom, Booka Shade, James Zabiela, Danny Tenaglia, Felix da Housecat, Deep Dish, and Dieselboy is very good. The only real EDM name APW has to account for is Underworld, which is indeed sick, but that is just one name. Who knows, Underworld could be playing Virgin Festival as well, seeing as their show at APW is on Friday.

I had an awesome last year. I can't argue the vibe part, because V Fest is the only festival i've been too as of now. The no camping part was fine with me. The neighborhood wasn't great, but its not like the festival takes place in the streets, and my hotel was on the other side of town. And the crowds that I saw were, for the most part, awesome. Plus, very easy to get to the front.

The Rock Shop is one of my favourite places in Vancouver. I haven't bought much stuff there, but it's cool to look around. They have t-shirts, hoodies, posters and artwork for pretty much every band you can think of. They are the only place I have ever found that carries Faith No More t-shirts. Great store.

If either Massive Attack or Mogwai play V-fest, this festival will be complete. But I dont see Massive Attack doing it because there are already 5 acts that each could serve as a headliner, and for 2 days, thats almost overwhelming. If they had a 6th, who knows what they'd do.

Brazil was amazing/beautiful. I went with my capoeira group, and we stayed in a neighborhood right outside of the city of Sao Paulo for about a week and a half, and then went to Ubatuba (beach about 2 hours away). It was like 10 of us in a house that had 2, maybe 3 bedrooms, so it was quite a stay. If you do go, be ready for the greatest rice/beans ever, and some good beer. It was my first time, so I cant really offer much advice as to where you should go/shouldnt go. Alot of people say "dont go to Rio de Janeiro because its full of crime", but thats only a reality if you dont carry yourself the right way and make reckless decisions. And if you do go to Brazil, go in either January or February, because its summertime and Carnival - and Carnival is a fucking party. We went to a rehearsal for one of the "events", and had an absolute blast.

And yeah - you do need a visa to go to Brazil. It takes a while to process to, so don't push it off (my group did and we had to hurry up at the last minute and submit them. it was scary realizing that literally 2 weeks before you go on a trip that you've been paying for for the past 6 months you might not be able to go).

If you do go to Brazil, just dont be a tourist. Dont visit Brazil - actually "live" in Brazil. Its what my group and I did, and it was an amazing experience.

Ah anytime man. Just book early and keep an eye open for cheap flights. Anything less than 1000 roundtrip can be considered a good deal. I'll be going back to Brazil next December/January. And if you do go to Rio, then don't walk the streets at night alone.

This is a good point. Right now, Lolla is taking all the spotlight for its impressive lineup. Maybe Branson is waiting for Lolla's hype to die down so he can make an announcement and not have to worry about the extra competition.

Then again, he should also announce it now with the hopes of swaying customers that are on the border between Lolla and Virgin. If he does wait longer, those customers may not risk the wait and go ahead and plan for Lolla.

Oh, and its the 20 + 21 by the way...

Tickets to the 2008 Virgin Festival in Vancouver – July 20 & 21, 2008

Wait... is the 21st a holiday in BC?

EDIT: It's not. What the hell? Why have it Sun/Mon, when there is no reason they can't have it Sat/Sun? Thats rediculous.

No it's not a holiday as far as I know. The closest one is BC day, which is Aug 4

So still nothing from this festival since the headliners, not even any rumors other than Muse, who I doubt since the announcement of the headliners, since Muse would have to headline.

Anyone think Kings of Leon would make the trip over to play on Sunday, since they play All Points West Sat. I hope so atleast, I've wanted to see them for a while now. Also hoping for either Raconteurs or Black Keys.

Think they're keeping everything hush hush because of something big? Or do they just have nothing to announce, so no new rumors or anything yet. ahhh

Well, I'm thinking next week. Coachella is getting all the thunder right now with their recent announcement of Prince. I doubt V-fest's lineup could top that much excitement. So I think they'll wait for the hype to die down a bit, so then they'll get more attention.

So far, Pendulum (live), Rabbit in the Moon (live), and Deadmau5 have all been confirmed for the festival.

Gogol Bordello

lolla is going to be better than this regardless of who else they announce

I suppose, but I saw Rage last year at Rock The Bells, can see NIN at Virgin, haven't ever seen Foo yet and I'm a fan and missed their concert this winter because of a snow storm ... annd I can get a one day pass to All Points West to see Radiohead w. Underworld and such the day before Virgin if needed.

Not saying Lolla still isn't impressive, just sayin I have many other chances to see a lot of those bands. Raconteurs are going to be here in NY 3 nights in a row anyway.

depends on what you're into. I'm into EDM - lolla seems to lack that, so not much appeal for me (although it has my dream headliners).

Well I just found this, a festival in Japan on the same dates as Virgin Fest ... so you can pretty much cancel all these bands out.

Might also have to rule out The Mars Volta they are at Paredes de Coura, PT

Wilco has released their tour dates with 8/9 left open, and no Maryland shows, so there MIGHT be a possiblity that Wilco will be at Virgin Mobile Festival 8/9 with the open date randomly there.

Also supposedly lineup will be announced some time next week ... or so I heard, not sure if that is true though. I'm still hoping for Muse, if they get Muse I'm picking this over Lolla for the simple fact I want to see Muse.

CuervoPH
04-17-2008, 09:17 PM

I was planning on going to Lolla, but the line up is not my cup of tea, since im flying from Puerto Rico i have to go to a fest that is more appealing to me, and the virgin fest so far has some great names and i think they will have a solid line up and not just only solid headliners. im definetly going and a friend of mine lives in Baltimore so im staying with him, so i guess it will cheaper.

Some of my coming predictions for this thing is

Bloc Party, theyre in Philly Aug 5th, and play V Fest in Toronto so why not here too.
Kings of Leon- Sure theyre at APW, but they can just take the short trip here for Sunday, also play a V Fest, in Europe though
N.E.R.D- touring with Kanye, on the Virgin label
Muse- this rumor is one I've heard since I began paying attention, this is actually more of a wish than a prediction lol

and yeah too lazy to think of anymore, and if theres anything to it someone at the 9:30 forums says a band called Flobots was one of the newer adds, so I checked them out and they aren't too bad if you're into their music, I enjoyed it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 10:36 AM

Wow they got Underworld, so much for APW's exclusive... which wasn't a fucking exclusive in the first place - even though they are selling it as such.

The promoters are so scared they fucked up, they are giving in to the hard sell tactics, like if you can't see so and so at The Bowery then come to APW! Waht a fucking joke. I don't see Virgin or lolla pulling that crap. Know why, they have decent lineups and a good festival ahead of them.

APW has shown how to screw something up in a fierce competitive market for our concert dollar. Others noted and systematically owned them time and time again.

Next year try harder APW, Even if there is a next year.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 10:40 AM

Virgin just raped APW

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 10:41 AM

There won't be another APW. At least not like it is this year. The public opinion, a very important thing these days, has already deemed this a lame duck.

It's hard to bounce back from that - look what happened to The Field Day Festival, one year and out.

APW is nothing more than a glorified couple of Radiohead concerts. Everyone knows this, that's why you see all the hate on boards like this. People expect more, esp for those ticket prices. Festivals like Coachella (funny enough), Lolla, Sasquatch, ACL, and Virginn give people that time and time again.

Maybe APW will learn from this, but I highly doubt it. It will go down as a mistake, and or financial draw, thus making the posibility of another harder to come by. Who knows? After all the first Coachella lost money, but that was in a different time, when the public wasn't going to these things, or didn't have festival choice left and right.

Virgin is better. I have made my choice.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 10:47 AM

There is no comparing the festivals other than Radiohead. that's APW one saving grace, BUT, I'm just going to go to the superior Radiohead show in Camden. that way I don't have to fight with 30,000 other people for a good spot.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 10:53 AM

FUCK APW.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 10:54 AM

HAHAHA!

APW is going to be sore for weeks from all that fucking it just got.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 10:55 AM

All Points Weak is officially a joke.

Maybe Virgin should do a NY festival? maybe in the Fall?

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 10:57 AM

Any person with a brain knows that APW is Radiohead and that's it, Virgin has lots more choice, some bad, some good, some great.

the point is CHOICE - APW has none - therefore it blows..
