Groove Armada @ Los Angeles City Hall - This is a 21 & over show
Downtown Los Angeles , Los Angeles, CA
Sat, Apr 5, 2008 06:00 PM

Day after my twenty first baby. Anybody been to a show here before? Its on the south lawn no? What's the noise curfew? Any concept of the set times with Jason Bentley opening?

I shit my pants when I first saw this posted on Goldenvoice until I found out it was a DJ set. However it is one hell of a way to celebrate your 21st birthday.

I dunno, $36.50 + ticketbastard fees for a DJ set? Wasn't Detour about the same price for a bazillion more acts? Maybe I've just seen GA too many times to pay these prices.

Pollstar has them playing the Glass House wtf?!?

Could this be an early show for the all agers? Or an all night one to keep them going after the noise curfew outside at city hall? Anyone? Anyone? Bueler.

Groove Armada's DJ set and live band performance are two completely different things. With the band and vocalists they play all their own songs whereas they'll only drop in a few when spinning.

Don't get me wrong, these guys are great on the decks. They bumped the Sahara back in '02 and did some other DJ gigs around LA way back when that were all top notch (Giant, Monday Night Social, SM Aircraft Museum).

The live shows have been great as well. I still think their best was their first in LA at the Mayan. The Palace/Avalon and Bowl shows were both solid... but for some reason I can't remember their live performance at Coachella.

So, you need anything else?

xbnmx
03-05-2008, 01:31 PM
Yes, to know whether or not they are actually spinning at the glass house.

The Palace show was amazing! They played Coachella 2 days later up against the Beastie Boys. It was pretty much the same show with a bigger crowd. The crazy thing was they played the Mojave tent. Needless to say they were both memorable shows.

And on that note...I got my tickets for City Hall. Holla!

So I grew up in LA and just got back to town. Since when do they do events at City Hall??? And its says 21+, so there is a bar? SO I can dance to Groove Armada at City Hall with a cocktail in my hand?.....sure sounds like it. Can anybody confirm?

They would not make it 21+ if there was not a bar.

Since never. Detour was set up around City Hall, but no shows have been specifically at City Hall. It's on the south lawn, so it should be amazing. And yes, you will be able to have a drink in hand.

God bless Goldenvoice for making this a 21+ show. :)

You guys...

I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It's a fairly major city. When you combine Minneapolis, and St. Paul (which makes them the Twin Cities), and surrounding suburbs, you have a population of over 2 million people. Not close to L.A. as far as size or population, but still a major metropolitan area. Yet Minneapolis deosn't get a lot of these shows... We have to goto Chicago to see many of them.

Just be lucky for living in such a big city where everyone perofrms in... soooo jealous. I'm an NFL fan, and I love my Minnesota Vikings. But I'll trade you guys the Vikings so L.A. can have an NFL team if we get all the kickass shows that L.A. gets lol.

Have a good time tomorrow night guys, and see you in 3 weeks, so I can thaw out from the long-cold Minnesota winter lol.

Got there at 8:15pm, $40 tkt cash, and GA were already spinning. Sounded great, excellent venue. Lotsa pretty girls dancing sessy. I think I may be too spoiled by some recent acts out of la belle France but my face tonight went unmelted. I even tried holding a lighter to it to get it started. Same deal with MSTRKRFT in March. Maybe it's me. I'm curious to read what others thought of the show last night.

i was absouloutly blown away. It was a beautiful evening. The crowd looked great. The sound was excellent. A couple times a year us los angelenos get blessed with a few dance music once-in-a-lifetime expierences. Underworld & Basement jaxx @ the Hollywood bowl, The Orb @ walt disney concert hall, Fatboy Slim @ the museam of natural history. This was one of those nights. The crowd totally loved it. The armada rocked the house. Opened with Yaz-Situation. Played some classic Hacienda style Rave Anthem that im still debating with a freind who it was ( Alison limerick?) . They played Jump and shout By Basement Jaxx and the crowd went nuts. Played Tons of there own stuff (Superstylin twice) and ended with Blue Monday from new order, an aphex twin track?, and Justice "We are our friends" . It was spectacular seeing the crown jewel of Los Angeles taken over by dance music. Playing on the steps of City Hall. It was truly awesome. They did threaten to shut down the show once because the crowd rushed the stage at one point. Other than that it was awesome. Oh yeah and Jason Bentley played Nasty Girl by Vanity 6 about 20 mins before GA went on. It was sick.

WOW WOW WOW.... Best show I've been to in a long long time. I don't know how people can choose DJ's like Tiesto and Van Burren as the top DJ's when a duo like these guys is around. The played new music, old school tunes, their hits (old and remixed), anthems and everything in between. If you look in the dictionary for the definition of "DJ set", you will se a picture of them... that's how I can explain that night. And to top everything off, there was the venue and the crowd. The venue is AWESOME for an event like this. The crowd had a great vibe, not like other events I've been to in L.A.; I did not see a single asian person lying on the floor all X'd out (like you usually do at under 21 shows). And the GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS were all HOT HOT HOT.

PROPS TO GOLDENVOICE FOR SETTING UP THIS SHOW. YOU GUYS ARE MY IDOLS. Everything was perfect... and the way the event was carried out in that venue, only puts out a good word for you guys and the EDM scene.

WOW WOW WOW.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

my personal opinion is I had a great time. I took the subway.. there wasnt that long of a line to get in. the music was fucking awesome. yes there were hotties there (boy hotties is what i was noticing). no line for somewhat clean potties considering.

I was kind of disoriented getting off the subway but all you do is look UP and you see city hall and hear the music - easy to walk around to find the entrance.

I look forward to more events like this in the future. especially detour festival coming up in October!
