Does anyone have any idea as to when Portishead will grace the U.S. with their presence, other than at Coachella?

I really hope they do a handful of shows in the U.S.
My hopes/predictions of places/venues in no particular order...

Red Rocks/Colorado
Roseland/NY
Club At Firestone/Orlando, FL

And yeah, thats it.
Mostly because I would go to all of those shows :)

Tylerdurden31

Roseland/NY

while Roseland was cool...at least it was on the DVD. I really don't care for that venue much. I'd rather they play some place like the Beacon Theater or some place that isn't usually used for a venue, like a church or something.

fikus222

Only playing a few shows in the U.S. doesn't jive with the amount of shows they are playing around Europe. Oh yeah and Florida over SF dream on.

Our apologies to anybody disappointed by our recently announced tour not coming close to where you live.

We know many cities are missing but we're unable to add more shows this year due to personal reasons.

Hopefully we'll be able to get to Australia, New Zealand, the US and everywhere else we've missed at some point

WTF? So no more shows this year? What possible "personal" reason could they have to pull this? Wait, this states that the US will be missed, does that mean no Coachella now? Fucking hell. I refuse to even accept that as a possibility.

Probably not because of the whole "lineup subject to change" deal. The wording of the post implies that the US isn't being played at all. But since they are still on the Coachella poster, it's most likely a case of just bad wording, or so we hope.

I'm listening to it for the third time already and it's really, really fucking good. What's especially awesome is that it's not just a rehash of what they've done before, which would've been the safe route for them to take. Look at a track like "Deep Water," for instance. It doesn't sound like '90s-era Portishead but the song is beautiful in its understated simplicity. Definite contender for album of the year.

At this point I don't think there any way Portishead can announce a US tour until Coachella has sold out. I'd imagine GV and Portis struck some kind of a deal when they ended up with Portis as the headliner, 'cause without that exclusivity element it would probably drastically hurt sales.

awesome.

I've seen the videos for ATP but have been sleeping on finding the boot. I'm psyched to hear it and actually get to listen to the new stuff before they play the polo fields. especially with all this positive feedback.

the last time I seriously got down to some Portishead was at a Halloween party in brooklyn. I was on shrooms then and should maybe consider being so this time around as well. it's been years since i've done so.

thelastgreatman

Precisely what I was saying, Hunter. The version on this leak is less exciting than "Wicca" is to me. But I expect that by the time they're finished tweaking it for the official fully mastered release it'll blow our fucking heads off all the same.

Either way, if they open with the "Wicca" version at Coach it will lay to rest all this "Portishead is too mellow" bullshit. That song makes my heart beat in advance.

I doubt the final release will be anything different.
It most likely sounded more rocking live because just that..the guitars was live n loud! :)
But with the album version, I feel I need to turn it up louder than usual to get the same feeling from the live version.

thelastgreatman
03-08-2008, 06:08 PM
Nah... crowd tapings--no matter how good they are--never sound as clean as a mastered studio release should. There's no way this is exactly what they're releasing in April.

Well, I heard the 15th. Then the 22nd. Then the 29th. Then the 15th again. Then I heard it might be delayed to May. But the official Europe release date is the 14th... so I don't see why we couldn't get it on the 15th.

msklvr
03-08-2008, 07:29 PM
The date I have listed for the release is April 15th.

This is definitely not the official release or the final master. Silence (Wicca) is fucked up at the end. And there is not much mastering, eq-ing, or stereo in the guitars on any song. This will be much brighter and punchier when the real deal comes out.

Sure is nice to hear, though.

I just hope nobody I really, really want to see plays at the same time as Death Cab for Cutie. Obviously Death Cab will be on the main stage before Portishead, so I need to arrive sometime before their set begins to get a good spot. So if the main stage lineup looks like this (my estimates) :
Café Tacuba 6:15-7:05
Death Cab for Cutie 7:30-8:20
Portishead 8:45-10:15
Kraftwerk 10:45-12:00

I'll be at the same stage for almost 5 hours straight. I hope for the following:
1) I get close enough to make it worth my while
2) I'm not spending all that time alone (meaning it would be nice to actually watch these shows with friends or at least friendly strangers)
3) I don't have to piss or shit too badly during Portishead
14) I get to see enough of the other bands on my list between 12 and 7pm, like Islands, St. Vincent, Akron/Family, New Young Pony Club, Rilo Kiley, MGMT, etc

fikus222
03-09-2008, 11:06 AM
At the risk of sounding unpopular, Third sounds like it was Portishead's freshman effort and then the Dummy and Portishead albums followed. I do like Hunter, Nylon Smile, the Rip and Plastic (so I can't complain too much)

All Tomorrow's Parties is an awesome show, so the live show won't suffer one bit.

Yeah, I remember that he said they would be main stage. And now that they are given inexplicable subheadliner status, it's a given. But yeah, I think Rilo Kiley, Animal Collective, and Stephen Malkmus are definites for the Outdoor. M.I.A. might be main. Dunno about Cold War Kids and Dwight Yoakam, probably main.

If I end up missing Rilo Kiley, I won't be that heartbroken. Not that big of a fan of their music. Mainly Jenny Lewis' rack.

Excellent main stage times if that is the case....just add MIA in there somewhere and you guys will know where to find me on Saturday...
I did 12 hours last year at the main stage on Friday..I think I can manage 5 easy....

I recalled that as well, if fact there was a line up floating around that even said Cafe Tacvba (main stage). You might be able to find the press conference interview somewhere on the board...
