The photos of the grounds of the event remind me of those disaster movies where they have evacuated New York and everyone has been led out and the straggler masses are left to fend for themselves.

From Billboard:
The festival was produced by Goldenvoice, producers of California's Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, with AEG Live. The event is already slated to return next year to the same location.
Looks like they either deemed it successful enough this year, or else they have confidence that it will continue to grow. I am glad to hear this. Good work GV.

this is from the ny times yesterday:
For the organizers of All Points West the more immediate concern is creating a concert franchise that will last. The abundance of new festivals has increased competition and made fan-wowing programming coups harder to secure, Mr. Tollett said. Five new festivals have arrived this summer, and last month Madison Square Garden Entertainment announced that it was buying 910 acres in rural Springfield, N.Y., about 60 miles west of Albany, to mount a $15 million, three-day music festival in 2010.

Over the past few weeks I've been kicking myself for not going to APW instead of going to Florida. Primarily because NY rocks and all the drama that ensued in Florida wouldn't have ensued. That, and getting to see more openers than Liars. But I was doing the math and APW would have been $200-300 more and in Florida we got Bulletproof and THE TOURIST. So yay Florida.
Maybe next year if the lineup is ace.

Hey - I'm still in NYC - I will post pics as soon as I can, took some video too.
Overall, good fest - mainly because Friday was so nice and NOT CROWDED, so not only did Radiohead save this fest but the comfort factor (including nice weather) helped out quite a bit. I'd say there were about 30,000 on Friday and you could go from stage to stage for most of the day very easily, 50,000 would make things a bit more cramped, as the Park grounds are not that big. I think you can fit 2 Liberty State parks in the polo fields.
We didn't take the ferry - because we wanted to save the $25 or so dollars and spend it on merch (got a RH t-shirt) and though we saved money, by taking the path, subway, and light rail, it did take a while to get back to Brooklyn, not a big deal though.
Radiohead was great, CSS was great, Underworld was pretty good (but put them on in the dark - jeez people), Duke Spirit were very good and New Pornos were so-so (but I don't really like them all that much) I will say a lot of RH were big time douche bags - actually sitting down in their claimed spot, thru sets from Underworld and New Pornos - show some respect to the artist performing dickheads.
I still think another decent (BIG) headliner (yes instead of another RH night) would have been better for the fest. A good percentage of the crowd definitely did not show up till about 7pm.

Nice pictures...what a great setting! I was in NY/NJ last weekend on vacation with the family (my best friend lives in Maplewood, NJ) & was amazed how lucky we got with the weather. Looks like weather stayed nice for APW! It can be unbearable in Aug.

my festival review: Overall I think the was a very well planned festival on many fronts. However, and this was pointed out by a more then me, it just seemed as if they put Coachella on LSP. The set up reminded me of Coachella as soon as we walked it. Not a bad thing to say the least, but I remember how they wanted this festival to have its own identity. Both sets were amazing on the Radiohead front, however I found Friday a little more intense. Saturday just killed with the encores. The weather was great the crowds were laid back, there was ALOT more people on Saturday compared to Friday but even then we walked right up to the main stage before Kings of Leon no problem. People seemed to respect each other space alot more then they do at Coachella. Even security was laid back, a couple of them were dancing during Underworld. The food was good too. In some ways better then at Coachella. Though, $4 for fucking water is a disaster. Seriously, I almost choked the vendor when she said $8 for 2 waters. Why? The free water around the site helped and maybe that was the idea? To have folks use the tap water over the bottled water. And limiting people to 5 beers was crappy too (not that we drank but I always like the option) We got in pretty late both days and missed alot of the acts. I saw a bit of Grizzly Bear (I couldn't get into them because I wanted to walk around the site) Duffy, and Caught the 2nd half of Animal Collective (they sounded amazing). And of course Underworld and KOL. I am not sure how the festival will last though, unless they recycled Coachella headliners. I wonder how next year is going to shape up....
on a side note..was anyone else annoyed by how many times the APW logo was plastered on everything? (I did buy a APW hat though :))

Blossom by a nose, or maybe by a head - Cleveland on a whole was a more enjoyable experience in terms of Radiohead only.

The festival was good but not entirely worth the money or the hassle to get back and forth to from Astoria, Queens. We decided to take the subway, path & light rail which was a bit time consuming. However, I thought it was fun that we took 3 trains to a festival whose whole concept is locomotive related. I'm sure the Ferry ride was probably a bit more convenient, but I'm not convinced it would've taken us that much faster. Money was more important to us for the weekend than time anyhow.
Radiohead definately saved the weekend for me. Being that this was my first time seeing them, back to back nights was a nice way to make up for the years missed. I enjoyed both sets, but was way more into the show on Friday.
We got to the Park between 1230pm & 1pm each day. It was nice to beat the crowds & chill in the park for the day. Major dissappointments in organization was how controlled the environment was. The numerous police dogs initially freaked me out quite a bit. The lack of shaded areas and places to sit down also sucked, especially when trying to escape the fierce sun on Saturday while catching the acts during the day. The price of beer, along with the markings on the hand & 5 drink limit (830pm last call) was a big annoyance, although it helped me save some money which is not a bad thing. The $4 water was ridiclous, but the multiple free water stations was a huge plus.
I had a good time at the fest, as there were some good performances & I was with good friends. The Go! Team was really good & I was happy to finally see them, but the crowd was rather lackluster. Also wish they had played "Milk Crisis". Mates of State put on a fun set as well. I really enjoyed watching them in the rain. They were much better than when I saw them at Coach. It may have been due to the extra 2 members on stage filling in on strings & horns. It kind of sucked that the Bullet stage was running a half hour late all day on Friday. it definately messed up our schedules a bit. We saw a little bit of Duffy, who we didn't care for all that much. Same goes for Grizzly Bear. Not that they were all that bad, but we just weren't feeling it, so we didn't give them much time. Caught the first 5 songs off CSS who were a lot of fun as usual. I'm glad I got to see them play "This Month, Day 10" before we mosied on. If they hadn't gone on so late we would've stayed for more, but we didn't want to miss any of Underworld. They were good, but the set was very underwhelming. I almost wish they had Underworld close out Friday night with a stronger set, but Radiohead's set made it all worth while.
Saturday was better during the day. There wasn't an afternoon shower, which was kind of desired after sitting in the sun for so long. However, the weather was perfect & there were a couple of fluffy clouds that saved moments in the day. Chromeo was a fun start to the day. Metric was cool, but nothing special. Sia was adorable & amazing. Kings of Leon was a big suprise. My friend is a huge fan, so I decided to catch the whole set with her. They turned out to be my second favorite set of the weekend, next to Radiohead. I wished I had known more of their songs because I would've been much more into it with the crowd. There were a lot of cute girls getting down to some good old southern rock. I thought they kicked ass, but this was definately the moment in the day where I truly wished beer was allowed to be brought into the crowd.
Overall, good weekend though over priced. Don't think I'd attend again unless the line up is truly amazing. I'd still probably not attend all 3 days unless we stayed somewhere close to the park or the ferry.

Just got back home today.
Overall my plan worked well for seeing Radiohead on Friday. Hopped on a cab in manhattan at 6:30. Got on the ferry by 7:50ish (i think that's what time it was), and arrived at the fest just as Radiohead was starting their set. I could hear 15 step being played so I hightailed it over there.
Anyway, great show.. A little upset I couldn't catch it all three days or get there earlier on friday but I was busy seeing NYC as it was my first time on the east coast.
The ferry was definitely spectacular and was probably one of the highlights of my entire trip. Thanks GV!

I didn't know they had artist signings! Seriously, where were they?
I got back yesterday and rested all day. I had a fucking AMAZING time in New York, and I will post some pictures later.
Radiohead on Friday was absolutely mindblowing with the best song selection and slightly better performance (and I was tripping that day), and of course a smaller crowd. We stood about 30 feet in front of the soundboard area and got a great view of the whole stage, although I couldn't see the band well on the stage. I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW AMAZING THE LIGHTS WERE!! The pictures don't nearly do them justice. So fucking awesome.
Also, KUDOS to the Do Lab. That place was fucking BUMPING after Radiohead was over both nights. We stopped and dance for about a half hour after Radiohead, and my god was that DJ good. Anyone know how to find out who the Do Lab DJ's were?
The "Sonic Forest" was also at APW, and we had a great time with that on Friday--remember the poles at Coachella that made little whispery bird noises and flutter chimes when you waved your hands in front of them? That's the Sonic Forest.
I want to post more, but I will wait until I can illustrate my post with pics. We got some good ones, but hell I think the other pictures posted so far are way better than ours. Especially the Radiohead ones. Ours turned out all blurry.

The problem I had on Saturday was we stood WAY back, and I felt kinda bad about singing along to songs in the back. I'm sure everyone up front was singing along. I seriously tried to sing much more quietly (or even hum) during the quiet songs, but the couple a few feet in front of me kept giving me these half-turn glances back. OOPS.

just got back in Denver an hour ago. Festival was fantastic as a stated but really it was ALL about Radiohead. I am going to cheat and count the back to back shows as one and call it the best shows ever. A tie with Daft Punk at Red Rocks easy and easily surpassing the last 3 times I saw them (Summer Sonic 2003, Coachella 2004 and San Diego 1st night 2006). Yeah, the set list were similar to what they have been playing lately (no major surprises) but My god those performances were just fucking Magic. Thom and Co were just so into it the 1st night and the 2nd night had a laid back feel (the audience was SOOOO QUIET during the slow songs!!) to it until the 2nd encore. The version of Planet Telex KILLED their Coachella version. and the lead into Idioteque was just nuts. I am amazed how good and far Idioteque has come. One part Autechre, One part Underworld, All epic. And THE LIGHT SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ugh! I honestly thought I was going to get a seizure form the show. Daft Punk raised the bar in terms of stage set up for me and I think Radiohead have matched them. I hope to attend the festival again if the line up is amazing and if I got extra $$$ laying around (We are SOOOO broke after this plus the wedding). Though again, I am not sure how they can top this year. 2 nights of Radiohead is just perfect, in fact I think the only way to see them now is with back to back shows. Also, NYC is amazing, Newark is frighting, transportation is expense if your using it from Liberty Newark Airport, trains don't always run on time, Central Park is beautiful, and some east coasters are just jerks.

LOL I did the exact same thing during NIN at Lollapalooza. I was even with the sound board about 20 yeards to the right and it was quiet. Me my friend Ryan and this chick behind us were all screaming along to "gave up" a definite show highlite. It was frustrating not being able to crank that shit up louder. People around us looked jealous they didn't know the song if anything.

I met some really cool NYC people and didn't encounter too many jerks, but one thing I did notice is that both cars and pedestrians do not obey traffic laws AT ALL. Jaywalking is NORMAL there--even mothers with strollers will fucking jaywalk DIAGONALLY through an intersection. That was unreal. We just did what our friends were doing and jaywalked with the rest. Good times. (except one girl in our group almost got hit by a car! scary)

Jersey City Serenades Miss Liberty With a New Rock Festival
By NATE CHINEN
JERSEY CITY — “Where is the statue?” the Welsh retro-soul singer Duffy asked, squinting into the afternoon. “There she is.” In the crowd a few heads swiveled toward Liberty Island, following her gaze. Then it was down to business.
It was Friday, opening day, at All Points West, the brand-new multistage rock festival held over the weekend at Liberty State Park here. And as Duffy started into her tune, “Warwick Avenue,” a mass migration was taking place nearby: fans of one tuneful indie-rock group, which had just finished its set, were streaming across the grass to hear another one, which had just started. (The first band was Mates of State and the second, New Pornographers.) The rain had let up, and things were running smoothly and more or less on time. So why wasn’t everybody having more fun?
There are surely many answers to that question, none of them adequate. What became clear, during the festival’s first two days, was the give and take needed to sustain such an event in the metropolitan area. Presented by Goldenvoice, the company behind the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, All Points West was extremely well organized for a maiden effort. But almost every pleasure point came with a trade-off.
The festival site, a long strip of green within view of the Statue of Liberty and the New York skyline, was duly breathtaking. But because it is in a state park, there were firm restrictions, especially regarding alcohol. (Anecdotal evidence strongly suggests that the overcrowded beer pens were not popular. On the other hand, fresh tap water was readily available.) And while many festivalgoers enjoyed a breezily scenic ferry ride to and from Lower Manhattan, not everyone enjoyed the long lines, or the surprising distance between the ferry slip and the festival gate. (There was a different set of minor hassles for anyone reaching the park by New Jersey Transit or light rail.)
But every rock festival comes with a few logistical caveats. Coachella is in the California desert; Bonnaroo is in a remote pocket of Tennessee. By this measure All Points West was a miracle of convenience, even setting aside the issue of gasoline consumption, one of the chief environmental selling points in a festival expressly full of them.
The greater source of ambivalence, then, had to do with the lineup: a small handful of great acts, a heap of decent acts, a few flat-out clunkers, and no discernible vision to make them all cohere. On Friday and Saturday the festival felt like a consecutive pair of Radiohead concerts, with bonus features — which is essentially what it was. That wasn’t a problem for most in attendance, who, judging by the numbers, had come for this purpose. (Sunday’s headliner was Jack Johnson, a mainstream folk-rocker known for his environmental activism. Advance ticket sales for that day were less robust.)
Radiohead has the clout to command a main attraction’s spoils: a slot after dark, when the skyline and the statue are lighted; full-stage production values, complete with Fortress of Solitude décor; respectful silence from the two smaller stages. Each show was triumphant, stretching past two hours, with two encores. Half the songs were the same from night to night, but otherwise the shows were strikingly distinct.
The sound of the band is atmospheric, potent and at times operatically intense — a good fit for the majesty of the setting — and on both nights it conveyed both gravity and depth. Most of the songs from “In Rainbows,” issued last year, landed gracefully, with Thom Yorke’s vocals soaring or seducing against a cold glow of keyboards and guitars.
Two of the best younger bands on the festival demonstrated affinities with Radiohead’s musical temperament, but in wildly divergent ways. Grizzly Bear, performing on Friday, was melodic and utterly engrossing. On “Little Brother,” the members of the band engaged in a four-part vocal harmony; on “Two Weeks,” a new song, Daniel Rossen played an electric piano ostinato while Edward Droste sang barbed reassurances. (“I told you I would stay,” is a refrain with a hint of reproach.)
Animal Collective, which played as a trio on Saturday, ran with harshly disruptive experimental urges, taking them much further than Radiohead ever has. Panda Bear and Avey Tare, the band’s two singers, took turns with the lead, and with percussive detail. At times the music was merely grating, but when things clicked — as on “Fireworks,” with its tussle of jackhammer-triplet rhythm — the pull was unmistakably powerful.
Various other groups reached for more straightforward rock ’n’ roll uplift — Kings of Leon, the Virgins, the Felice Brothers — and others, like Andrew Bird, settled for something quirkier. (Mr. Bird’s one-man violin orchestrations and theremin-like whistling, impressive in measured doses, got cloying after a while.) There were modest flashes of hip-hop, from acts like the Roots, which imbued its set with jazzy abstraction, and the Somali rapper K’naan, who spent much of his set unspooling self-affirmative rhymes.
The likeable New Jersey-born singer-songwriter Nicole Atkins managed some local flair in her set, preceding her song “Maybe Tonight” with an announcement: she was bringing on a special guest, someone any New Jerseyite would appreciate. It turned out to be three people, dressed up as a pork roll, egg and cheese, an allusion to the regional delicacy also known as a Taylor ham sandwich. (Ms. Atkins might have reconsidered her song choice as she reached the line: “I’ve been informed you could be the death of me.”)
And in the end there were a few bands viciously intent on starting a party. Metric dropped a strong dance-rock set, with its lead singer, Emily Haines, strutting across the stage in gold lamé; CSS turned its performance into a riot of driving backbeats. And Girl Talk, a Pittsburgh dance-music collagist, quickly had his stage crowded with freak-show partiers, oversize balloons, and a generous spewing of toilet paper. (Apparently he didn’t get the eco-friendly memo.)
Girl Talk’s music amounted to an attention-deficit D.J. set. But he whipped the crowd into a froth, something that hardly anyone else managed all weekend. At one point he got site-specific, playing a fast-cranked version of “Paranoid Android,” a Radiohead tune. Never mind that he paired it with Jay-Z’s “Roc Boys,” in a musically strained mash-up; it was a show of deference to his host, as well as a show of impudence. Only one of those things will serve the needs of All Points West as it looks ahead to future seasons.

we stumbled in late cause i felt bad wasting the tickets and spent a good deal of the day in the beer tents...the ferry was half empty going there and only took a little longer going home cause we missed a boat by a minute or so
saw the secret machines, couple songs from ben harper, all of anastasio and 1.5 jack 'yawn' jackson tunes....the machines rocked, harper was meh
anastasio was surprisingly great considering i know none of his music (my friend was a phish fan though).....he played long and hard to the biggest crowd of the day (by far) and had most everyone moving
jack johnson's crowd was pretty small but not completely empty...those tunes just don't belong closing a festival though...maybe at 2 in the afternoon i'd enjoy him laying in the sun but at night it just doesn't work

I could only go to saturday which damn near broke my heart; but I just started a new job and could not call in friday. Sunday was sold on ebay ($58) months ago.
I arrived at the P.A Bus Terminal at 10:30am ; $2.55 to Hoboken, and an easy $1.55 on the Light Rail. Much cheaper than the ferry, and kinda fun for tourists. I arrived at the grounds around 11:45, was the only person in line at will call, and when the gates opened watched in amusement as every person who got it before me RAN towards the stage for a 8 hour wait for Radiohead.
I know my limits; I caught Lily Holbrook (c+), Your Vegas (b-), Nicole Atkins (b+), most of the Felice Brothers (b+), some of Alberta Cross (b) and the unexpected highlight of K.Naan (a); He was absolutely terrific. Incredible talent, and rapping about getting out of Somalia alive puts all the chain wearing suburbanite wanna be gangsters to shame. GREAT STUFF.
Then it was time to make my move for radiohead and I got about 40 feet back stage left, and caught Kings of Leon. KOL is weird; I feel like I should really like them. I love rock and roll, but I never have been able to really get into them. It baffles me but APW was no exception and I give them a (b). I really wish I could have caught the roots instead, but I needed to be as close as possible for radiohead.
In that vein, before 5pm, it was really easy to move around between stages and every act ran on time. I really felt that as soon as one set ended, I could just stroll to the next stage and that act would just be starting. That may not have been the case for the main stage but those acts were not my style. Metric, Chromeo, Animal Collective = whatever.
Radiohead was fucking unbelievable. Great stage setup, setlist, everything. they played the bends, which made me so friggin happy; I had seen them 4 times prior and never heard my favorite song. They played Bangers and Mash in San Diego at 2005, but this time around it was as thrashed out and heavy as any song played at the festival. And just look at the setlist if you need any more clues a to just how awesome they were.
A young woman passed out from ecstasy right next to me. Her bro-style friends poured some water on her head and gave her a jolly rancher while she couldnt even get up off the ground, possibly from a blow to the head she suffered colliding with the ground as she fell down. One of her more apt, less bro-ey freinds retreived security, and after about 4 minutes a yellow shirt and said responsible friend carried her out. Security didn't ask useless questions, recognized the woman was in distress, and simply threw her around his shoulder and carried her out as quickly as possible towards medical help.
The beer situation was OK. I simply didn't get drunk because I knew 5 beers was not going to do it so I didnt even bother buying a beer.

But Secret Machines are a $20 ticket, and cat power would be the same. Add in $8 (1/2 lb.) veggie wraps and $4 waters..... Not worth it, and I left NYC at 11:am sunday so I could be at work on monday....
Basically, I paid $400 to see Radiohead on sat. THAT was actually worth it. Of course, I could have been 10 rows out at the hollywoood bowl in my own seat for $400.

as a sort of side note: APW felt like one of those UK "mega gigs": a great headliner, and you could see 5 shortened sets of some solid new music. I wonder if APW could be bigger?? Was this year a toe in the water, or was it as big as it could be?? Will we ever see 4 stages?
Oh, and there were no lawn seats or cheap seats at APW. Not every one likes radiohead as much as I do. Show me a radiohead show with 30,000 available tickets that sold out in a 9 hours. The record stands at 5 months.
Thats outside of the margin of error for a self described expert. ;-)

Well see its apples and oranges of course. Both are amazing. Ill give my verdict in 3 weeks regarding NIN, but ya know. Trent and Rob Sheridan have some great ideas, I think its an amazing progression from what they did during With Teeth. Since last years Year Zero tuor was very low key, they had to go out guns blazing here. It makes lots of other acts supposed ''intricate'' set ups look like kids stuff.(kanye) Trent wanted somethign that had so much range with the material he was going to do, and there are highlights I can see already like The Big Come Down. RH is what it is, I mean its ridiculously simple, Andi Watson had this idea, and they went with it. And it works, great potential to do things and they have shown it, I like that nothign moves regarding Rh's setup, I mean everyone else stuff moves, and to pull it off with nothing moving is crazy. Also I know you agree the sound for both of them was incredible, since the guys mixing both are from Pink Floyds sound company. In the end, bot set ups are glimpses of what will be done in the future regarding big productions. you wonder what somebody like U2 will do when they tour again.

Well they were using the latest V Dosc PA system for this leg of the tour(Rh is) they have 30 subs if I am correct running to give some amazing bass. they have been accomodating all the venues very well to give a full spread sound experience, they added some more side fills and stuff so the people on the extreme sides wont get denied amazing sound. Thats why some recordings from this leg sound really good even when the taper wasnt in the center seating . Radiohead has at times 96 channels of audio running, freaking ridiculous. theres that awesome article in lighting and sound uk that goes over pretty much all the technical stuff for them, its a great read, check it out, its all digital. And yes, U2 will be coming back next year, I cant wait. Itll be arenas too, not stadiums.

So people actually went Sunday? Everyone I met out there was blowing Sunday off for one reason or the other.. The main being the absolute shit line-up. But also it's clear that the writer wasn't at the main stage for the first two bands Friday. The Go! Team definitely had everyone hyped. And during Michael Franti/Spearhead the crowd was one big mass of jumping and dancing bodies

I kind of want to see his show after looking at his stage set up...looks pretty cool...but he still shouldn't have headlined APW or Coachella....the crowds proved it...

ex girl, i've talked about this before. I wanted to see Fatboy slim, but he sucked ass, so I left early found her(she was mad because I didn't want to stay with her for JJ) and it was good from there. JJ is not a bad performer. APW: Not Coachella East Yet
By ROBERT COSTA
August 13, 2008; Page D7
Jersey City, N.J.
Thunderstorms and logistical hitches didn't mar this past weekend's three day, three stage rock festival in Liberty State Park dubbed All Points West, a title derived from old Central Railroad of New Jersey signs guiding immigrants boarding trains.
Associated Press
Jack Johnson performs during the All Points West music festival at Liberty State Park Sunday in Jersey City, N.J.
Highlighted by two marathon sets from Radiohead on Friday and Saturday and a folkie, guest-laden performance by Jack Johnson on Sunday, the festival, at times, had the feel of a test-run: serpentine lines at the foot of Wall Street at the ferry terminal, crowds milling shoulder-to-shoulder at the gates, groans about overpriced beer and shrugs regarding the thin lineup below the headliners' star power. Tickets weren't cheap, with three-day passes costing $258 and single-day tickets $89. Paul Tollett, president of Goldenvoice, co-promoter of All Points West, conceded all was less than perfect. "There's a lot to learn from a first-time experience," he said. "Now that we have the data, we understand what we have to fine-tune." Goldenvoice also produces the Coachella festival in southern California, which has drawn growing praise, and bigger acts, since it began nearly a decade ago. All Points West wasn't Coachella East, but it did have flashes of potential.
The hipsters and hippies who flocked to the park each afternoon were able to catch a few gems, even if they may not have known everyone who was playing. The sound was more than adequate, though Zack Rogue of California's Rogue Wave, whose Sunday set was a medley of straggly pop, was uncomfortable with too much sun shining on his six-strings. "Rock music sounds better with walls," he lamented.
The less-heralded acts that provided most of the entertainment were a delightful surprise, especially a batch of British bands including the Duke Spirit, whose vocalist Liela Moss evoked a young Debbie Harry being backed by the Pixies. Welsh singer Duffy's melisma was impressive, though her post-Winehouse blue-eyed soul was part diva and part delinquent. Your Vegas, from Leeds, England, brought some Jagger swagger to Saturday's proceedings, thrashing guitars and growling about "miniskirts and shoes that hurt," eliciting knowing nods from the crowd of twentysomethings in tight jeans and oversized sunglasses.
Girl Talk's amalgamated laptop mixes on Friday twisted the crowd into dance frenzy, blending such a plethora of pop hits that fans lost track of what they were actually hearing. Not that they cared. For a festival chock-full of uncharismatic indie-rock acts, Girl Talk was an escape for the concertgoers who came for Radiohead, Mr. Johnson and maybe some raving in between $5 pizza slices and $7 beer.
Somalian wordsmith K'Naan played a disjointed set on Saturday, but still managed to scatter intriguing samples of Ethiopian and other African jazz rhythms over his bouncing reggae raps. Hip-hop groups were rarely featured at All Points West, and when they were, it was on side stages, not the main stage graced by Radiohead, Mr. Johnson and an assortment of avant-garde purveyors of sonic interpolation, from Animal Collective and Chromeo to Rodrigo y Gabriela. Philadelphia's the Roots did draw hundreds of excitable fans to their early evening performance on Saturday at the second-tier stage, with guitarist "Captain" Kirk Douglas bleeding Hendrix theatrics with blues scales on a raucous take of "You Got Me."
Besides the eclectic groups lower on the bill, All Points West also featured dusk performances by a handful of established rockers.
Michael Franti and his band Spearhead came out very strong on Friday, with Mr. Franti chanting, "In the back of Greyhound bus, you can be who you are," in a peaceful ode to his troubadour son, raising eyebrows from fans about why such transportation was not better utilized by All Points West. As the afternoon crept into the evening on Sunday, Ben Harper, another roots rocker, came on before Mr. Johnson playing a robust set backed by the Innocent Criminals, soaring on "Diamonds on the Inside," an anthem from his 2003 album of the same name.
Trey Anastasio, the dexterous guitarist who once led the influential jam-band Phish, was the pearl of Sunday's side-stage performances, threading lower-fretboard riffs throughout his coherent set that was buoyed by newly debuted songs like "Alaska," which he wrote with Phish lyricist Tom Marshall earlier this year. Mr. Anastasio, who played a small gig in Brooklyn on Thursday to warm-up for All Points West, was ecstatic to be performing live again after an absence from the rock circuit following a drug conviction last year. Mr. Anastasio's set-list reflected his mood, playing upbeat Phish tunes "Heavy Things" and "Gotta Jibboo" and wailing with abandon on "Drifting," which he dedicated to his Italian grandfather who immigrated through Ellis Island, just a few hundred yards from the stage, in 1910. Mr. Anastasio also came out to play with Mr. Johnson, adding licks to Mr. Johnson's "Mudfootball" as All Points West closed out on Sunday with Mr. Johnson's scruffy surfer rock in front of a loose crowd of 22,000.
But it was Radiohead who most of the nearly 30,000 devotees both Friday and Saturday came to hear. If there is a better live band on the road today, they remain unannounced. Radiohead, which has been on tour since May promoting their recent disc "In Rainbows," and who played the venue in August 2001, was varyingly intense and subdued in its pair of shows. Thom Yorke's spiraling falsetto floated above crashing guitars on "Nude" and the brooding ballad "Videotape," both off "In Rainbows." Radiohead's epic performances stretched over two hours each night. With Mr. Yorke's stirring vocal modulations on "Fake Plastic Trees" from 1995's "The Bends," and guitarist Jonny Greenwood's droning atmospherics on "The Gloaming" off 2003's "Hail to the Thief," they reduced the audience to an awed silence.
All Points West's afternoon and early evening performances each day were a pleasant sampling of short sets, fit for the iPod generation looking for new downloads. Yet, it was obvious that Mr. Yorke and company defined the festival, which is good for fans but bad for promoters who clearly need a draw at the Oxford band's level to bring capacity crowds out to an event of this size, and price range.
The city aesthetics enabled All Points West to be more than a few stages out in a field, with Manhattan's skyline and the emerald glow of the Statue of Liberty ensconcing the audience. Beautiful view or not, it's unclear whether All Points West will come back for a second try next summer. "We're trying, we're hopeful," said Mr. Tollett on the prospect. "We're trying to find what people coming to this like. . . . For the first time, I think we did all right."
Mr. Costa is a Robert L. Bartley Fellow at the Journal. Jim Fusilli contributed to this article.
So it looks like 80k for the weekend...not too bad for the 1st year...

it's about 2 months I think for me that might be enough time. if anything it's something to look forward to when I'm sad that coachella is over, like LOLLA was this year for me.

haha, it sucks when Coachella ends right? Friday your just thinking fuck I got 3 days of pure greatness, and then sunday hits you in the ass and you realize shit it's over. And it DOES happen that fast.

i started missing NYC as soon as I boarded my return flight to LA.
APW was intimate and chill. reminded me a bit of the early Coachella years. attendees were easygoing, didn't encounter any douchey characters. security was lax (one dude was even grooving to Underworld and smoking a joint). weather was perfect. few people were sweaty and stinky. for once, i wasn't assaulted by silent farts.
we took the light rail to and from the festival (our motel, in Jersey City, was about three stops away from Liberty State Park). at the end of every night, we got around the long lines for the northward-bound trains by hopping on a southward-bound train, getting off at the next stop, then jumping back on a northward-bound train. bypassed all the folks waiting in line at the Liberty State Park train stop.
on the first night, we took in RH's light show - we positioned ourselves by the barrier, halfway between the stage and the soundboard. on the second night, we were at the front barrier, in front of Ed. RH on night 2 was my favorite of the two nights. i over-listened to OK Computer and The Bends when I was younger, so I have a tendency to gag when songs from these albums get played on the radio. Thom's voice, however, sounded so excellent that night that it renewed my love for these songs. the old stuff sounded so fresh and sweet, even fucking "Fake Plastic Trees" which I grew sick of a long time ago. at the end of "Exit Music," i shouted out "Thom, you are fuckin' A." i like to think that he was replying to me when he said "Darling, I love you too." :p
seeing RH twice at APW + vacationing in NYC was expensive but worth it. night 2 rekindled my love for this band and ranks as my second favorite RH gig.
the cool part was leaving the festival grounds at the end of night 2 and not feeling overwhelming sadness because we were only halfway through our vacation!

fantastic review bleep. I think In Rainbows sounds better now after seeing them at APW. I haven't stopped listen to Radiohead since then. Though I can't decide if this shows are tops for me now. The more I think about it the more I think it tops the other 3 times I have seen them.

I posted this in the radiohead poll thread. What do you think?
So check it. APW and the Hollywood Bowl are being voted as the best shows of the tour. So I went and decided to stack both of them against each other. Combining both nights sets. A contention for me is True Love Waits at the HW Bowl. I listen to the recording and it doesn't count as a full song to me (but then we're just splitting hairs). So here they are anyways:
All Points West
Songs played both nights:
15 Step
There There
All I Need
Nude
Arpeggi
Gloaming
Videotape
Reckoner
Jigsaw Falling Into Place
Idioteque
Bodysnatchers
House of Cards
Pyramid Song
Everything In Its Right Place
Songs played only 1 night:
Morning Bell
Lucky
Optimistic
You and Whose Army?
Climbing Up The Walls
How To Disappear Completely
Paranoid Android
Dollars & Cents
Street Spirit
Cymbal Rush
Just
National Anthem
Kid A
Where I End And You Begin
Faust Arp
No Surprises
The Bends
Bangers and Mash
Exit Music (for a film)
Airbag
Fake Plastic Trees
Planet Telex
APW
36
Songs played here not played at HW Bowl:
YAWA, Just, Kid A, WIEYB, Bangers and Mash, Airbag,
Venue: Liberty State Park with the backdrop of NYC and the Statue of Liberty.
Hollywood Bowl

well... Anybody order an APW poster last week, only to get an email today saying EMEK is selling an even more limited (100 pcs.) poster through his website for $85???
The organizers of the festival specifically requested that we do
not include the Statue of Liberty in the poster and that they
wanted the New York City skyline as seen from the park. The poster
depicts an alien sea creature being spotted after escaping from its planet to attend the festival.
The Artist Edition of 100 is on white speckled paper and GLOWS in
the dark, $85 + shipping
in addition to being signed and numbered, our copies are doodled
and embossed
To see this poster click on this link, then wait for the animation to load
