Yeah, I was expecting her to be on the initial lineup. Would have been cool.

It's not soul. And she has a great voice. What exactly sucks about it?

Just saw Nicole Atkins in Austin, Tx at the SXSW concerts. I fell in love with her voice, music, personality. I saw over 35 bands that weekend and she was by far the best. Hope to see her back in Austin.

i was just thinking that

also: I didn't know from the first line "this year's Amy Winehouse" if she would sound like Motown soul throwback or would just be some performer sluring her words and trashed

i think you'd have to have a soul to sing soul music. none of this has a soul. that's a frank sinatra song, sung badly, by a cute chick at a karaoke bar as far as i'm concerned.

I meant the former, though not Motown...just white-girl-phoney-but-still-good-soul.

This was before I knew there were 18 other white-girl-soul acts on the bill. :D

I don't agree with the "badly" part, but yeah...this is more like a jazz standard style than soul.

Her album is more uptempo.

EDIT "Jazz standard" isn't right either. It sounds like a 60's Bond theme. Anyway, I like it.

I think he was just a dumb-ass who didn't know how words work.

Still, makes your li'l Donkey Punch sig seem kind of insignificant, doesn't it. ;) Glad I could help you on your quest.

I bought her album a couple weeks ago - really enjoying it.

That video made me raise a brow though...she should've had a mic stand - she's kind of akwardly flailing about...

Nonetheless, looking forward to seeing her at APW

Hell yes to this. I remember seeing that performance on Letterman and being blown away. Don't know why this needs to turn into a race war on here. It might be silly to call Atkins' music soul, I agree, but I'd definitely say she sings with some soulfulness. The influences of and allusions to Motown, jazz, interpretive and lounge singers, Roy Orbison etc. are obvious, but I still think she's rather lovely.

Edit:
Edited to say: I was wondering what was new with her and saw that she posted this info on her blog. Sounds very promising:

The Time is Neigh...
Just wanted to let you all know that the Black Sea and I are going into the studio at the Seaside Lounge in Park Slope Brooklyn on January 2nd to record album #2. Finally! Helping us helm the record is good friend Phil Palazzolo (New Pornos, Neko Case) who I had the pleasure of working with when I recorded BVs on AC Newman's record. This new album is gonna be a bit darker, louder and haunting. I really can't wait. I'll send updates and videos from the studio so be on the lookout! And Happy New Year everyone!!!!

Jesus fucking christ am I ready for this overwrought faux-vaudevillian commedia dell'arte sinister sideshow-underbelly trend to choke in a molten pool of curdling face paint and polycrilic ruffled bloomers. It's almost 2011, everybody. It's time to have the future now. No more fucking carnival chic.

But yeah, she was enjoyable opening for the Keys in October.

For real, though. No more.

But I love her music.

Hannahrain, agreed as well. I don't even think the new video is that special. But she's an absolute knockout live. The prospect of seeing her live (plus all the new music) is what's exciting for me.

I don't actually like the new video either; It just doesn't fit as well into a tirade. I guess I like her a lot better in general when I don't feel like I'm watching her try on assorted schticks for size before she gets too famous.

I don't really care for her, but her band is incredible. Her lead guitarist can absolutely shred.

she opened for the black keys in los angeles and i thought she sucked the first night but killed it the second.

her girl guitarist was great
