And MAN it was tons of fun. Seattle people were all dancing - dancing! I hadn't seen everyone grooving like that since The Go! Team came around.

He didn't just play tracks from the CD, he tore it apart and remixed it different ways, with different tracks, plenty of new stuff but tons of recognizable snips of music... ah it was good.

Some of the memorable parts were:

Pieces from Daft Punk tracks (three different ones! Technologic, Digital Love, Around the World)
Queen - We will rock you
Nirvana - Lithium
Depeche Mode - Enjoy the silence
Ace of Base - The sign
LCD Soundsystem/Elton John/Neutral Milk Hotel (from Night Ripper)
Some Michael Jackson track I couldn't remember the name of :)

And a whole cr*pload of fun stuff I couldn't even tell what they were but sounded great. He finished with another Nirvana track after asking if we wanted a dance track or a depressing track to finish, to which he said 'ah f$ck it I'll just play both'.

The dude was grooving all through, he stage dove, he invited people to join him on stage -- there were around 20 random people dancing with him and it was just a big party. Security went up there but they left the first people that had made it, so it was all goodness.

Definitely go check him out in Coachella if you're into electro/dance.

Anybody else remember more tracks from the show?

Las Vegas (regardless of feelings toward Girl Talk) should spotaneously errupt into unsurvivable flames... probably the most worthless city on the planet.

Copyright infringement.

i believe that if you use less than 10 seconds of a song then you are alright, and a little over is not the biggest deal in the world.

girl talk is a subsidiary of viacom. they already own everything anyway.

Does this apply to live performances? Are there RIAA lawyers at all these shows with stop watches?

Is Girl Talk a DJ? I'm confused about why copyright infringement would matter if he's a DJ....

You can generally play anything you want at a live show. It's only when you record it and try to sell it that you get into trouble.

so how's he getting away with it then?

not baiting you, just curious as to your opinion on this. no way all that stuff is cleared. no way. a standard girl talk "track" contains "elements" of at least fifty songs. at least the ones i've heard.

It definitely was for sale. I remember this being mentioned on tribe a while back. In fact, the CD pressing was late and GT offered a discount to download it. This was about a year ago I think, because i specifically remember knowing about this well before Bassnectar put a snippet of a GT track in his BBC mix last May.

I have no idea what the legalities of that album are. It would seem he'd have to have some sort of legal clearance. Still though I can't imagine how he could pay for that.

I'd be curious to hear about how he pulled off being able to sell that album from anyone who knows the specific details.

and btw, why the fuck aren't you baiting me? try harder
(actually, I couldn't give a shit. i only appear take interest in the other thread because of that douche)

found it.

Here is the post where I first learned about girl talk
http://tribes.tribe.net/glitchhop/thread/a6224080-4d66-4329-b995-0248758fbb31

and this was the site where it was being first sold

Is that his labels site?

I see a loot of blogs touting that Leigon of Doom mash-up sold on that site but it is emo screamo and punk mashups, its not really my speed.

right, but paying for a hundred major top 40 samples from major labels seems ridiculous. That shit's generally not cheap, even for big time producers.

i'm still curious to know if there's some sort of loophole or cheat he used. I konw someone who's been trying to clear a relatively obscure old jazz sample and the price is apparently redic.

no way a girl talk album is profitable then. if this is true. what label is he on? too lazy to look it up.

right. MAJOR being the operative word. i notice patterns though. top 40 from all around the same time period, 85-86, a lot of freestyle stuff. maybe he shopped in bulk and one of the big labels cut him a deal. who knows?

it doesn't seem that well thought out though. i think he might just be getting away with it until someone calls him on it.

If he did pay I have no doubt he would have had to get some sort of package deal.

If I'm the label and I'm debating between charging a boatload for each sample or getting nothing and letting GT just bootleg his album on the internet I'd probably cut a sweet deal.

Still seems like it should have been out of his reach though. I know he had a day job before this so I don't think he's rich.

I don't usually particularly like Girl Talk (I feel like there's too much going on in the songs), but the show last night was AMAZING! Everyone was dancing and having the best time of their lives, the general ora was great and it felt like a huge party! I'll remember it for the rest of my life...
