Not very doable. It is a 3 hour drive one way without traffic and not considering border crossing.

because this is the way to go (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=81800+Avenue+51,+Indio,+CA+92201+%28Empire+P olo+Club%29&daddr=Tijuana&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=31.481541,69.257813&ie=UTF8&z=9&om=0)

It's very possible. Just do it. It's a 3 hour drive. Say you arrive at 11am to camp. Set up camp and head to TJ around Noonish. Get there around 3pm ish. No rush hour conflicts at all. You can stay until 7 and then head back and miss rush hour again.

Looking at the above map it appears you'd have a much shorter drive if you decided to hit up Mexicali instead of TJ. Not as drama-filled as Tijuana but it has some of the same bordertown Mexico debauchery.

Also - the last four times I've been in TJ the police have offered to arrest me each time. Some espanol helps.

Be sure to bring back plenty of pharmaceuticals.

2 hour drive to Mexicali from indio. You can leave your car at the border and not have to worry about wasting time crossing back.

Mexicali is hell on earth, literally. It is as hot as hell over there and nothing good to do. It's basically Tijuana without the fun times and the good looking women. Really, don't let any people from Mexicali tell you otherwise. And the stories you hear about cops and all that aren't really true. All you have to do is behave just like you would do in the US of A. If you don't look for trouble, trouble won't find you... but if you do................

One more thing. Don't drive accross the border, unless you have a SENTRI pass. It will be easier for you to walk accross and get a YELLOW CAB, remember the YELLOW CABS. They have been around for years and they know their business depends on tourist going back and talking good about them. You will pay a little more by taking those yellow cabs ($5.00 to downtown vs. $3 on the locals' taxi libre) but it's worth it.

A city defending itself. Of course it's not biased.

I'm not defending anything. I'm just pointing him in the right direction. About being biased towards Tijuana vs Mexicali, why wouldn't I?

Gold, TJ is quality. Saying that, I haven't been to mexicali before, might venture down there!

my friend told me that we don't have to take our car across, though...

can we walk though the border crossing, then cab into town or what?

The first time I took a trip to Tijuana we were there for 5 minutes and my friends almost got arressted. I was with 2 guys, and they were harassing them but left me alone. Nothing happened but shit, it was a little scary after having been there for only 5 minutes.

I also will never drive across the border. I prefer to walk across. Too much hassle in a car. And yes you still have to wait forever to walk through customs, but less of a chance of being harassed, at least in my experience.

Fuck driving accross the border...did that once and on the way back was escorted to to secondary inspection, border patrol found a joint that had been lost in my car 3 years earlier in between the seats, threated to arrest me and fine me 5g's and keep my car...3 hours later I got to leave with my car and had to pay a $500 fine...

No thanx I'll eat china comida in china town!!!

Heh, I always go to Rocky Point and my favaorite part of coming back is the fresh flour tortillas. Also stopping at "duty free" on the way into mexico is fun as you can get Patron for $25.

Oh yeah, I smoked a joint from Rocky Point all the way to the border ( a 45 minute drive) I was very baked when i arrived at the border and missed a stopsign. I thought I was going to jail. The border guard took my license and yelled at me for 5 minutes but never mentioned drugs and only threatened an inspection. I didn't have any more drugs on me anyway as I smoked the last joint to stay awake for the drive. That's the weird thing about pot. It's a stimulant before it's a depressant.

ugh, why go to TJ? Besides that long drive I think you would just want to turn straight around. TJ is literally hell on planet Earth. I had a one of those famous TJ trips when I turned 19. It was actually a load of disgusting drunk fun. I ended up screaming at a pimp, god knows why. TJ is a trip man. The entire sidewalk is lined with old women who will grab your arm and say "suck your cock 5 dollars!"

It's something to do once in your life, but it's a LOOOOOONG night in TJ. coming back to Coachella after that would be exhausting. Hit up San Diego/TJ after Coachella. Or before Thursday

no shit? damn, i need to go back.

Heard you can get ketamine there easily as well, if you got a sick horse or something.

and yea, don't drive. Park for 5 bucks in that border town right after SD and walk the bridge.

Funny story, as we were walking back from TJ there was a ton of road construction going on. It took us literally a good 20 minutes to figure out how the hell to get on this bridge. We ended up walking on the freeway before heading back.

AHHH memories

It's funny how people talk about getting arrested or something bad happening around a Tijuana trip, and almost every time the story involves drugs and people doing stupid things. This only reiterates what I mentioned before: If you go to another country, don't act like a douchebag and do things you wouldn't do in the good old US of A

Well since walking around, chillin, is a pretty universal thing, and that's what we were doing in TJ. I don't see any just cause for me and my friends to be hassled as soon as we cross the boarder.

I agree with the one person, don't drive into Tijuana unless you intend on buying auto insurance for the day. If you get into an accident without temporary insurance for Mexico you are screwed.

Parking and walking over the border is the best bet.

And make sure to only take reputable cabs. You don't want to end up robbed and left in the middle of nowhere.

Also, don't drink anything unless it is sealed.

1) You don't want to get sick.

2) You don't want to run the risk of drinking PGA (100% pure grain alcohol) and then getting rolled.

I'm not trying to be an alarmist.

Just saying be cautious...

Also, you can't bring pharmaceuticals over the border without a real prescription anymore.

Like most people said, if you don't do anything crazy you will be fine.
