I'm not sure anyone could have predicted this one; 25 years after Santa Claus got me the "Don't Go" 12" for Christmas, Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke (pictured right), better known as Yaz -- or Yazoo in Europe -- are back together for the four-disc box set In Your Room (due in May) and the Yazoo Reconnected: Live tour.

They would be the perfect pick me up for a Jack Johnson induced headache!!!

I couldn't find anything at Pitchfork about it, but it's real.

This would be great, but at this point, they are doing 5 UK dates in June, so don't get your hopes up.

Just got an email back from Alison Moyets tour manager and they apparently have no US dates planned. I have a "someone kicked my puppy and I dropped my ice cream in the mud" kind of feeling right now.

Ha, I saw Book Of Love at KUKQ fest in '91. Pretty fun, they were chucking plastic rosarys into the crowd.

But they were nowhere near the level of Yaz(oo).

I may be one of the few people on this board that has seen Yazoo live. September 1982 at the Edinburgh Playhouse, for the Upstairs At Erics tour. They were incredible, and having been called back for a 2nd encore, they realized they'd played every track off the album, so they played an extended Situation, for the 2nd time in the night!

After the gig, I hung around the back door to get autographs (cut me some slack, I was a teenager!). Vince came out the front door, Alf came out the back and she gave me a peck on the cheek before climbing into their rock star panel van!

They're not that difficult to research. Vince Clarke started Depeche Mode, Yaz, and Erasure. They all have similar sounds (although DM went the dark route after Vince left) so if you like Erasure and early DM, you'll like Yaz.

I hope nobody who participates in the next Create Your Own Festival contest is reading this and thinks of stealing my idea but I was planning on my next fest being a Vince Clarke-curated affair, with Erasure headlining Friday, Yaz headlining Saturday, and Depeche Mode closing out the festival on Sunday. (Is that the reverse chronological order of when the bands were formed? 'Cause that's what I was going for.) I'd be happy to take suggestions on names for this festival so you can feel more personally invested in the contest without having to go through all the trouble of putting together a line-up and devising set times.

Yes. But what is known as Depeche Mode today has virtually nothing to do with Vince, aside from them continuing to play Just Can't Get Enough. I suspect if Vince was "curating" a festival, Depeche would not be an invitee. It would be like showing all 8 Nightmare on Elm Street movies at a Johnny Depp film festival.

Yaz are kind of a silly band to get this excited about. I feel like they're the kind of band that played in the background as sexually repressed stock brokers did lines of coke off the breasts of tranny hookers in the Reagan era. And like a sexually confused yuppie doing cocaine off a tranny's ass, you feel a lot better about liking the band when you're listening to them than when you think about the fact that you listened to them a few hours later...

Yaz are kind of a silly band to get this excited about.

As J.P.I.M.C.P. pointed out, hardly anyone in the US has ever seen them. And "Upstairs At Eric's" is just such an massive album to a certain demographic. It's pent-up demand. 25 years is a long time to wait for a reunion.

It's not like they could tour all over the country for 2 years like The Police. But there are enough people who will say "This is my only chance" that they will sell out a few shows on each coast and then go home.

I saw Erasure a few years back, it was one of the best shows I've ever seen, and they were WAY past their prime.

captncrzy

QFT, MSparks.

Look, I've seen quite a few shows since 1981, and that Yazoo gig in 82, in all it's low tech, no lasers, crappy stage glory, is still one of the best.

Maybe it was a "you had to be there" kinda deal, but that's what I guess we'll discover when they tour this summer.

I'll say it again, though. I'd pay the money to hear Alison Moyet sing the phone book. She's that damn good.

Got back yesterday afternoon. Was going to fly out Friday morning for the Friday night show. Of course, Phoenix had one of their worst monsoons in the last ten years on Thursday night. This resulted in the cancellation of just about every flight leaving after 8pm..so all those people on those flights towards the LA area were rebooked onto all the Friday flights, so they were all overbooked. So we got on the road at about 7am on Friday, drove for five hours, had to wait for our hotel room to be ready, and then drive five hours home. It was all worth it.

Allison's voice was incredible; I can't imagine how she never really had as much success as she deserves. By far one of the best shows I've seen in a reallly long time. If you have the opportunity to see them, go. You won't regret it.

Fail goes to the LA douches that sat down every time a slow song came on. Show them some fucking respect.

Its been difficult to put this night into words.

The evening started out normal enough. There was no line to get in. We went downstairs for drinks. I gave the bartender a tip even though he neglected to add a cherry to my whisky sour. We walked back upstairs to people watch.

Gays were in force to support their boy Vince. Im sure they love Alison too but Vince gave them Erasure. It also looked like students from FIDM, from around the corner, may have been assigned a class project of attending this event. The young punks were styling. There was this third group of people that unfortunately I have to put myself in: people with a look in their eyes as if 20 years ago was yesterday. Groups of girls who may have been attractive looking in clubs 20 years ago passed by with the look of grandmother on their face. Guys who still had the Levi, Polo shirt with the mousse hair look were in tow except their shirt collar size was 22 and not 15 . Their mousse hair looked like it was trying to cover a bald spot rather than looking hot. Basically, the crowd who looked like it belonged in an alternative retirement home.

The Orpheum is a beautiful venue. All of the walls above the balcony level up to the ceiling were filled with moldings in gold. There are various can lamps with orange and yellow gels that are pointed throughout the venue which give it a royal and warm feeling. In the middle back of the ceiling are 2 huge crystal chandeliers. Leafing and all kinds of designs completely covered the bottom of the balcony. I was in row L on the left side, right above the 3rd balcony.

I rather enjoyed the DJ set that Thursday night. A few songs that come to mind:

Bronski Beat I feel Love, Small Town Boy
Blamanche Blind Vision
Fine Young Cannibals
New Order -
Physcadelic Furs Love My Way
OMD -
Eurythmics Sweet Dreams
Deborah Harry Rush Rush
Soft Cell Chips on My Shoulder

The stage was slick and minimal. A small riser on the middle right hand of the stage had two thin keyboard stands. A white Apple logo glowed on the top shelf. To the left middle side of the stage was a second riser that was just a bit shorter. Two netted screens, which allowed you to see the other side, hung behind each of the risers. Behind the screens were several fluorescent tubes of various sizes.

Richard Blade, an old DJ from KROQ, came out to introduce Alison and Vince. Vince looked exactly the same with his completely shaved head and his memorable non-smile. Alison came out shortly after. She came out with a full brandy sifter and a bottle of water. The crowd stood to applaud and never sat down. Alison, just like Fatbastard, has picked up a couple of extra couple of pounds over the last 20 years or so. The music started and it was on.

Call me crazy but it seemed like she was looking at me and singing to me throughout the entire performance. Her voice and presence has this hypnotizing effect. She is a very sexy woman.

Her voice has not changed. No cracking or struggling to reach a range. The visuals were great. My personal favorite was the pictures shown during Sweet Thing. Various slides showed those alumunum covered chocolate footballs, golfballs, basketballs, jelly bellies, gummy bears, red licorice, and gumballs.

I found myself drifting back in forth during the performance to reminisce about all of those evenings Alison and myself spend together in my room. My little record player would play next to my bed while the lights were out and I would think of all the girls I had crushes on. I spoke on the phones with girls in the dark for what seemed to go on for hours. Alison was the voice in my head who was able to say how I felt and there she was in front of me at the Orphum. That performance made me remember who I was and who I am now. I cried Thursday night in my seat for that young guy who didnt always fit in with everyone, who only wanted to be a friend and be liked. As time went on, I landed up being the person everyone wanted to be friends with and for that I treated them like shit. Most of them deserved it but there were a few who were just like me before then, who were still finding themselves. I have only one friend from those days. Its hard to believe his daughter is going to be graduating from high school next year.

Im not a Doctor like Kang Sok Choo or a wealthy person like Jackie Conen. Im still just a guy who is still searching for himself.

Brilliant brilliant performance. Thanks for all of the memories Alison and Vince. God bless.

"Call me crazy but it seemed like she was looking at me and singing to me throughout the entire performance. Her voice and presence has this hypnotizing effect. She is a very sexy woman."

You have it so right. I swear she was looking at me too. She is beautiful in so many ways.

Vince smiled twice on Friday - I never knew he had such a nice smile.
