Passive Theory, as Board Member of the Week, you must answer the following questions and whatever questions other board members ask you:
1. What's your Desert island record?
2. What were your childhood pets?
3. What are you an expert at?

WOOHOO!! I am the BMOTW! Awesome!
1. What's your Desert island record?
2. What were your childhood pets?
3. What are you an expert at?
1. Hmmm... It is quite honestly REALLY had to chose a record that I could listen to time and again and never tire of it... But I think I have to go with Grace by Jeff Buckley. Turn On the Bright Lights by Interpol and Catch Without Arms by Dredg come as a close second and third, but the fact remains that Grace just frankly stands the test of time. There are a half-dozen ways with which I sympathize and feel with Jeff on the record, especially given my high school experiences and the types of relationships I've had to deal with (the songs "Last Goodbye" and "Lover, You Should've Come Over" come immediately to mind). That and I virtually rate it as one of the greatest albums ever made, from start to finish.
2. My only pet is the one I currently possess (I wonder if that counts... I mean I've had him since I was 14), my gecko Rey (or Flaubert as my parents call him). I love my gecko and he's been an awesome companion for the last 4 years.
3. What am I an expert at?... Hmmm... Well I do consider myself an officianado on Modern World History. It's most definitely my favorite subject to study (barring psychology and music, neither of which I would consider myself an expert at), and I feel that I have a very good grasp on specific situations that have come to shape global policy, such as the British Palestinian Mandate, and each of the last few major global conflicts (from Korea to the Gulf War) in terms of understanding the method to each leader's madness...However, I wouldn't consider myself an expert on our current global situation because so much is just completely unknown about what's going on in the Middle East and Africa and what-not.
How did you get out of your room?
Step 1: Opened the door
Step 2: Walked out of the house
how did you meet and begin dating your girlfriend? give us a feel for how passivetheory wins over the ladies. are you very romantic? what's the most romantic thing you've ever done for her?
Amusing enough, we met at my ex-girlfriend and our mutual friend's birthday party. I hadn't dated our friend at that point, either, and I actually asked her out first. She declined initially, but began to think that she had made a mistake by turning me down, and after my relationship with our friend ended (pretty disastrously too...), she dropped a huge blatant hint (by telling me up front) that she wanted to start a relationship, and we've been dating now for... 19 months. =D
I would like to think that I'm romantic, but I think what's really worked out well about our relationship is the fact that we're both intuitively practical; no ridiculous dreams of running off and getting married at 18 and what not (she's into theater, choral and what-not, and I'm an over-achiever in school). That being said, I think the most romantic thing I ever did for her was taking her to go see Death Cab for Cutie (one of her most favorite bands) and embracing her amid "We Looked Like Giants". <3

In reference to your NL West question above how do you take into account the fact that teams in the NL West were a combined 606-703 against non-division opponents for 2004-2006?
And I must say I'm shocked but only the Padres have a winning record outside the division over those three seasons at 137-125.

Yeah, and I'm pretty sure that's what has done it to cement the division's status as being rotten...
I've been a baseball fan virtually as long as I can remember. My grandfather has been a huge baseball fan (used to root on the New York Giants in the days of his youth) and has been rooting on (ironically) the Padres for the last 25 years or so, and so I kinda inherited his adoration for the sport, even playing a little recreational baseball as my youth (btw, I was terrible at it... X.x). I will, however, call myself a marginally fair-weather baseball fans, because there have been years with the Padres where I just turned off the television and forgot about them for weeks... x.x
If you had the power to bring one person back to life, who would it be and why?
You know... Part of me would bring back Eisenhower just to show him what an industrial military complex REALLY looks like... But that'd shock the ol' sarge right back into the earth, so I'll pass on that... No, instead I would bring back Layne Staley, with Jeff Buckley as a microscopically close second, because, as strange as it may sound, I would have loved to know what Alice in Chains might have sounded like had Layne been able to turn his life around. Yes, it probably would have begun to sound like the meandering nu metal bullshit of the last era, but I just think that the world still needs Alice in Chains... Or at least, I do.
Passive, what does your screenname mean, and how long have you used it, in various functions? Also, how was your Cinco De Mayo, considering you live near the country where it means nothing?
Well, the story about my screen name is pretty short. I was joining the new php-improved message board that my community of anime-loving friends had moved to, and I wanted to ditch my old nickname (since it was... I don't know how to put it... 7th grade-y?), and I was digging the A Perfect Circle song "Passive" at the time, and figured that it would invite a not-so clear juxtaposition of a song that calls for direct confrontation with a word that almost certainly causes you to think or calculate your actions (a "Theory)...
And Cinco De Mayo was pretty fucking good... I mean, I had work and a history study session (I have this massive test next week) but then I decided to head down to SOMA for the Dia Del Ska. 8$, hung out with 4 friends off and on through the concert, skanked the night away, lovely first ska concert for me anyway. Even grabbed the Skank Agents' set list, but gave it to one of my friends cause she tossed her bra on stage, and was clearly a bigger fan. Also, one of my co-workers is the trumpeter for Doctors Never Die, so I went to support him, essentially, and have a grandiose time. =D
Flaubert is a great pet name. Please tell me it's after the author.
This is Greek to me. Do you happen to speak any other languages, PassiveTheory? If so, which ones? How important do you feel it is to know other languages?
I'm pretty sure it is... I named him after a pro wrestler, they named him after an author... Go figure?
I do, in fact, speak other languages, and to demonstrate, I will answer the rest of your question in the other language I know, French (except without cedilles and other accents because I'm lazy...);
*Yes, I can speak a little French, and I think it's essential and important to know at least one other language in our world. It's because of the globalization of our globe and how the world is becoming smaller and smaller, and it's because of that that knowing other languages is important to establish connections and ties with people no matter where they are in the world!
ok, this is one of the usual questions here so, what concert or festival holds the greatest memories for you and why ..... cr*****
Well I know Coachella 2007 will hold a lot of memories for me, but the one crucial aspect that was missing from the festival was the ability to enjoy it's entirety with a loved one... Which is why I remember the Death Cab for Cutie/Spoon/Mates of State show by the Embarcadero where me and 3 of my closest friends (and girlfriend) had a memorable time, and it definitely holds the fondest of memories in my heart.

Passive Theory, what do you think about people between the ages of 18 to 30 not voting but being the ones who complane the most about the state of this country? Also what are your thoughts on politics in music but the small amount of musicians who actually DO anything about it?
Hmmm... Well, here's what I think. I think that the youth of the world have truly subverted themselves to the thought that they can't do virtually anything to change the world. Those who actively try to do so are labeled hippies and or shunned. I mean, the fact that our government has become preoccupied with the utter dominance of personal liberties (via the Patriot Act) and active discouragement of resistance and/or reasonable alternative thinking as a product of paranoia induced by the actions of an "enemy" that is anything but identifiable but is still relaxed enough to let it's citizens live in a medium that is comfortable for most (unlike China, in a repressive sense) provides today's youth with a dangerous precedent (protests in the 70s) mixed in with a relative sense of discontent rather than anger. More of the "we could be better than this, but it'd take too much effort" than "THE GOVERMENT HAS DONE THIS THIS AND THIS, END IT NOW AND HERES HOW!!!"
Also I think that the only reason the government focuses on education is to satisfy the demands of parents around the nation who want to see the government stepping in to up education and really don't care how they do it. Otherwise, other than making sure virtually every schoolwide event has United States Army or Marine Corp representation, the US government wants little to do with the nation's youth. In a Machiavellian form of thought, I can understand this, because why focus on you youths when we haven't finished reaping the benefits of your parent's malfortune and ignorance!?
And, while I enjoy music with political and socially conscious messages, I will always shy away from making politically oriented music, especially because the fact that I wasn't leftist enough for one of my old bands was the reason why I was kicked out of the band.
Finally, I do think that while conveying the message that politics in music is a good thing, I fucking hate it when musicians and entertainers don't back up their messages. I think that instead of saying "Fuck Bush" musicians, the symbolic communicators of public sentiment, need to be saying something along the lines of "Educate yourself, and know where you stand, because if you don't, our world will NEVER, EVER improve".
Then again, I guess "Fuck Bush" is easier for rappers without a high school education or coked out rock stars to say... Fuck.

You know, reading this question reminds me of that Daily Show bit from a few years ago where one of the correspondants interviewed this dude who was making right-wing punk rock music... Give me a second to find the clip... *five minutes later* damn, couldn't find it. x.x
I think it's because music inspires a copious amount of change, it continually evolves and through it's constant evolution provides poignant social commentary not only on the political aspects of life, but personal events and freedoms... I mean, I don't think a song like "Brick" by Ben Folds Five would have been popular back in the 50s especially with the modern topics it deals with. I think right now, our government is in such a mess that any signs of acceptance and or support for a reversion to conservatism is a step backwards popularity-wise unless, of course, you're a country singer. The fact of the matter is, leftism almost always equates with the wants and desires for more for the people, and musicians, as I've said previously, are the voice of the people, they kinda... preach to the choir... It's sad that two sides aren't given, but seriously, in today's world, how the fuck could you possibly think about singing to people to stay the course (the inherent principle of conservatism is either to retain or regress, return to older policies)!?!!??!
Also, at 1 Million dollars a game, I'm pretty happy that Clemens is no longer a factor in the NL. Because, with the Yankees pitching staff in the shambles that it's in, Rivera no longer able to close a fucking game, and everyone BUT A-Rod not doing as great as they ought to hitting-wise, they Yankees are looking at a steep uphill battle against the Red Sox for the East.
That being said, the Sox seem to completely fuck up every year (other than the year they won it all), so the Yankees taking the pennant wouldn't surprise me... It's just that they won't if they keep on playing like they have.
This is a question I think I asked Courtney …. If you and only you knew that the world was ending tomorrow and there was nothing you could do to change it … would you tell anyone, the world, no one and why ? cr****

In all reality... I think I'd keep it to myself, but I know that I would essentially free myself from all commitments and do some crazy shit until that end comes... Party at Lee's house the day the world ends!!!

Aw, I'm interesting! Thanks for the compliment! XD
I loved the article, thanks, and on it's premise I think it's really something when bands get back together even, honestly, if it's for the money because, for me, at the age of 18, I missed A TON of good shit from the previous decades, and sure, my generation has it's gems... It's very few gems (Muse, My Morning Jacket, The Shins, Death Cab come to mind), but I genuinely would love to experience these bands... As long as, you know, they're enthused to be doing what they're doing (not like the Happy Mondays this year... *le sigh*).
I've been studying French for... 12 years now. It'll probably be my last year since I don't intend to keep on studying French through college. I've been to France once, spent a month split between Paris (where I spent two weeks with my then-girlfriend from England who flew in to spend time with me) and the south of France (Orange, Aix-En-Provence) to visit with family. Had one hell of a time, and since my sister's doing her grad studies in Paris, I intend to visit her this summer and go to a music festival in France (Arcade Fire is playing loads of them).
As for the last two questions, it's connaitre or connais des/une langue, and since I did a report on Voltaire and (used to) know more about him, I side with the madman on this one. =P
More questions, guys, I've only got 2 days left! And this has been really fucking fun! =D

Ugh... Well, right now, as an unregistered 18 year old who intents to register by election day (as an Independent) I'm really really REALLY unnerved by the selection of candidates...
The 4 that come to mind immediately are Obama, Clinton, McCain and Juliani. What I like about Obama is that he's the youngest of the candidates and though his opponent's call it inexperience (honestly, aside from being Vice President, there's NOTHING that could prepare you for a stint in the White House), I think the fact that he has yet to completely entangle himself in the Washingtonian bureaucracy and tie his views and words to corporate sponsorship and greed is refreshing. My biggest issue with Obama is his staunch support for the oppressive Israeli government (not specifically the government but the idea of the nation state) and that bothers me, because the Gaza Strip conflict is only going to intensify in the next few years, mark my words.
As for Hillary Clinton? I don't want to see that woman near a Presidential podium EVER AGAIN... She rubs me the wrong way. and her subversive views on the war and lack of any kind of larger initiative than Obama's views to pull back troops in 6 months (simply agreeing with his plan and calling for nothing short of the exact same retreat is nowhere near enough to make me think that she truly wants to end the conflict, rather, she seems to me, at least, to be trying to extend her power-base to war opposers for the mere insurance of their vote...) and... Yeah I just really don't like her.
John McCain... Poor John McCain... He once had a mind of his own, but now? Trying to ACTUALLY win the Republican nomination?... He's subverted his thinking to that of the rest of his party... Which is some sad, sad shit. I think McCain will pull through with the Rep. nod because he's the only approachable candidate that the Religious Right can accept... I wont be voting for him.
Rudy Juliani... It's funny, the similarities between him and Nathan Petrelli on Heroes scares me (other than the youth issue, both are New York politicians who, amid a massive incident, become increasingly popular... And Nathan uses the publicity to become President), and, I dunno, there's just something I don't trust about him. He's clearly the most liberal conservative of the lot, but his retraction in terms of his stance on GLBT rights disturbs me...
Oh and there's John Edwards... Fuck him.
So yeah, I believe by process of elimination, Obama's my man... But I actually hope someone arrives on the scene to challenge my mind a little... Al Gore?

what are you dreams ?
My dreams?... Well, I would like to get my fingers into a multitude of things: I'm interested in the Social and Biological Aspects of Psychology (Behaviorism is just a bit too narrow for me) and becoming a Musical Therapist has always intrigued me. Also, I'm interested in Middle Eastern and Eurasian World History and Political Science when it comes to other possible Social Science career pursuits (namely in the vein of becoming a college professor). But, if there's one great love in my life, it's music; I want to start making music and, at some point, feel confident enough to tour and promote my tunes... And even if that fails, I want to also get into digital music and learn how to record as well as immerse myself into the public radio system and someday possibly become a DJ... Though clearly not as great as John Peel. =P
I mean, I would like to own a house by the beach and get married at some point in time in the future. In terms of having kids? I think I'd be one of those one and done kind of parents... I would like to have a little girl more than a boy (is that weird?...), and I'd get to spoil her rotten... And turn her onto the right kind of music. =P
They say that science progresses geometrically and not arithmetically : with that in mind, do you feel you are on the cusp of the generation that could live forever, or your kids, or will that never happen and why? Cr****
You know, I've theorized that this will never occur much in the same sense that I feel time-travel will never occur because, should it be true, I think that we would have seen significant signs of said miracle emerging in today's society... I just don't think that science will ever be able to achieve the kind of necessary know-how to perfect and indefinently prolong human life, because for every disease and virus conquered, a dozen new strains emerge... =/
do you believe in the paranormal?
If there was a zombie outbreak what would be your main course of action?
I suppose I don't since I've never had anything out of the ordinary ever occur to me during my time here on this earth... That doesn't mean I'm not afraid of aliens or anything... Movies have done a lot to instill that kind of silly fear in me. Heh.
If there was a zombie outbreak, my first course of action would be to run to the nearest non-zombie infested bookstore and grab a copy of the Zombie Survival Guide and let it coach me through the invasion. =D
Why don't you like John Edwards? (I like him)
I've just always thought of him as a humongous douche... And I really hate how his policies and political views have taken a back seat to his wife's cancer story... >>;

Heh, well I like cheese a bit more, and I'm a sucker for Camenbert (sp?), Monterrey Jack and Cheddar Cheese. =D
Anyway guys, seeing as it's just an hour before Friday here on the West Coast, I'm assuming my week as BMOTW is over. It was pretty kickass, to tell you the truth, and if you STILL have any diehard questions or would like to further any topics brought up during the last week with me, please direct them towards the "Passive Theory Is Rad" topic so that the next individual can have his day. =D
Thanks again, everyone! ^____^

My dreams?... But, if there's one great love in my life, it's music; I want to start making music and, at some point, feel confident enough to tour and promote my tunes...
-------------------
You know, I've theorized that this will never occur much in the same sense that I feel time-travel will never occur because, should it be true, I think that we would have seen significant signs of said miracle emerging in today's society...
i would like to hear some of your stuff Fro
BTW, i can already time travel in a sense. i am able to shift between other dimensions and can see alternate realities.... the universe is like a spider web, a fractal... every decision you make in life spins off anti-lives... it is possible to explore these to see the "what if" answers....
i'm currently trying to figure out what the powerball will be for Saturday. but that means i need to explore all other numbers to see if they exist in another dimension, if they do, it means they are not the # picked in this dimension
i hope that makes sense

Passengers will be allowed to carry breast milk in quantities greater than three ounces as long as it is declared for inspection at the security checkpoint. I can go to NASCAR the rest of my life, even after Jeff Gordon (#24) retires. California Speedway & Phoenix International Raceway, but I'd also like to see Bristol & Talledega. Besides fly-over jets, NASCAR almost always has great music.

Like major league sports in general, fans & the sports stars are not very out. I used to subscribe to a listserve of gay Jeff Gordon fans, but it was all spam. There is a website called gaytona.com (http://www.gaytona.com/). There was one gay driver back in the 80s who died of AIDS (Tim Richmond), but even now NASCAR says he got HIV from a woman. Silly people.
So, other than the usual 10 percent, gay fans are not very out at NASCAR events. When I mention NASCAR to my gay friends, they usually look at me like...

I don't belive so J. Last summer I was working as a stage hand and worked lighting for his show here in SD. He was a cool guy, let us party in his tiki bar trailer.
I had lunch with him backstage and talked to him about football, fishing, and life in general. It seemed every conversation started turned into a conversation about boobs.

how is studdering cured? Is the word "lisp" a cruel joke?
There is no cure for stuttering. There have been many books written about stuttering cures. There are many parallels between being gay & stuttering - stutterers try to hide their stuttering, stutterers often are ashamed of their stuttering, stutterers wish they didn't stutter, society/family/friends make stutterers feel bad, etc. Just as with being gay, one can be quite successful as a stutterer. Some famous people who stutter are: James Earl Jones, Bruce Willis, Carly Simon, as were Winston Churchill, James Stewart, & Marilyn Monroe.
Lisp is a common term, not a cruel joke. It can be a frontal lisp (th sound for s) or lateral lisp (sounds like Daffy Duck). Then there is the gay sibilant lisp.

I'd like to relive the 1960s & 1970s. Besides the music, it was a time when people actually did things & stood for things. Nowadays, no one protests the war & are too afraid to challenge Bush & Washington DC.

I can go to NASCAR the rest of my life, even after Jeff Gordon (#24) retires. California Speedway & Phoenix International Raceway, but I'd also like to see Bristol & Talledega. Besides fly-over jets, NASCAR almost always has great music.
A long stay in Puerto Rico would be nice. Beaches, old forts, and the biggest shopping mall in the Carribean.
Then put diapers on me & stick me in a gay retirement home.

The Westboro Baptist Church is picking Tammy Faye's memorial here in the Palm Springs area on Sept 10. I hate them, but I would not kill them. Ignoring them is the best thing to do. I saw Tammye Faye in a stand-up comedy routine about 4 years ago here in Palm Springs, with a gay comedian (Leslie Jordan). She loved the gay community. I am conflicted about her memorial, however, as I have picketed the church where the memorial will be, because they preach hatred & intolerance towards gays.

It seems to me that this thread only works if people are genuinely interested in the nominee and the nominee is amusing/articulate enough to hold our attention. Actually, if Cpt. However the thread also requires a general respect for the premise by the collective board, which I don't see happening in the near future.

Courtney, I'm not sure if it's lack of respect for the premise of the thread or for the intellect of the people who have yet to be BMOTW. I know the general consensus was that last year was a real low point for new members, but I can't believe it was worse than this year.
