ARE YOU GOING BECAUSE IT'S TRADITION OR YOU GENERALLY THINK THE LINEUP IS WORTH THE HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS? KEEP IN MIND...YOU'RE ARE NOT ONLY PAYING FOR THE TICKETS BUT FOOD, GAS, LODGING, ETC.

the small acts is why i go, tens of nice artists. generaly, the headliners are NOT headline material. in the last couple of years they had RATM, RCHP, Tool, Madonna, Bjork..i mean c'mon?!? and now jack johnson portishead and waters. i love portishead and they are among my fave bands, but are just not that big to headline. and not to mention the other two, which are a truly disappointing headliners.
but its gonna be awesome ...

both. i'd see this lineup in a parking lot with makeshift stages and i'd go to coachella without seeing the poster knowing that the tradition will make the time memorable

so there's some bands you know/ like on the lineup...but are you really super excited to go all that way to see 5 bands? that's like going to disneyland for a day and all the good rides are shut down.

you go there for tradition but it's not always worth the money and the memories aren't always as great.

I suppose I'm in the minority here but there are some great finds in this lineup. First and foremost, I finally get to see The Verve. That alone sold some tickets for me and my friends. I still worship their albums and enjoy most of what Richard Ashcroft has done solo. I've also never seen Metric, Kraftwerk, my Morning Jacket, and a few others, and am definitely going to make sure I catch those shows.

Re: The Jack Johnson thing, keep in mind there are always late additions to the bill and Jack Johnson could very well end up being what Tiesto was last year, filler for the main stage while other shows are going on around the polo grounds. I'd hate to see The Verve while Fatboy Slim is going off in the Sahara, that's for damn sure.

In GV I trust.

My only complaint is that Jack Johnson is headlining Coachella.

Typing that while listening to Kid A is actually physically painful.

But really, we need to collectively move on. And we just need to deal. Somehow. CHEMICAL BROTHERS PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY IN THIS LAND.

01-21-2008, 11:05 PM
For sure. Chemical Brothers looked to be confirmed awhile back...same with Goldfrapp...I'm sure if one or both are added late people will change their f*ckin' tunes. ;)

Dude, Tiesto was bad ass, shaking up the Main Stage with that many people. He's a good festival/colliseum DJ.

I like to think of 2004-2006 as the holy grail of Coachellas, where it just kept getting better and better, or at the very least maintained some kind of high quality. 2007 was a few notches down, IMO. I think this year brought it back up a bit, really.. aside from Jack Johnson headlining. I still am not sold on the whole 3-day thing.

Nah that whole 5 minute Discovery Channel intro after he was already pretty late just kind of cemented him as a Diva of epic proportions in my book. There was absolutely nothing new or innovative about what little I heard from there. I told my friends I was going to walk home if they didn't leave then and there, and they did.

Fatboy Slim owns Tiesto.

I've only been going since 2006 but ever since then I swore I'd go to every one. I don't usually watch the headliners, I go for the smaller bands that Ive loved for a while i.e. this year Tegan and Sara, AiH, I'm from Barcelona, Metric, etc. Those bands are what make the fest and I bet the people that are saying the lineup sucks don't know half of the bands on the poster, open yourself up to some new bands, you might discover something you really like!

We have gone every year and while not impressed with a lot of the line at firstup I hope to find lots of new music--that is what is great about Coachella--I have said recently that I have seen all of my favorite bands a lot lately and am looking for new music. Also we are looking forward to a somewhat mellow experience- We were not in favor of the Rage fans! So it is tradition for us!

01-22-2008, 07:37 AM
As much as I love tradition, the experience, etc, I have to wonder if it's worth $600+ for the first time since I started attending. $600 for an underwhelming lineup and an "experience" that while life-affirmingly good, has already been experienced four years in a row. It's not just about Jack Johnson...the subheadliners and undercards last year were far more exciting. There's great stuff to be had each day, but enough to justify the price? Definitely not on Friday. My gameplan is to either just go Saturday, or hope it doesn't sell out, and get tickets dirt cheap on ebay or craigslist, but even then, it would probably only be Saturday and Sunday.

01-22-2008, 07:42 AM
A little bit of both. I decided after missing '04 and finally getting down last year that this was going to be my big trip every year.

It's not the strongest line up ever, but there enough on that line up that I'll cough up the dough to see em. The National, Stars, Portishead, Les Savy Fav, Death Cab, Gogol, Dwight, Black Mountain, Madness (!?), Cinematic Orchestra...yeah, there's band on the bill that I could give two shits about, but that's how I felt about last year too. I didn't go last year for the headliners.

this year is awful, the number of bands I'd like to see in the entire three days this year is about equal to the number of bands I wanted to see on any one day last year

It's like Goldenvoice is worried more about their "indie cred" and being eclectic hipsters than drawing people to the show

I think it comes down to value, most of the bands i can see where i live for $30...no long drive, no heatstroke to worry about...mmm i think after four good years, this is my year to let coachella go to fallow

there always next year right? well maybe...

I keep thinking there will be a year that will suck so badly that I just can't do it, but thankfully that year hasn't arrived yet....admittedly, I'm not thrilled by the lineup, but I know there will be many performance that will kick ass, and bands I haven't seen yet that will broaden my horizons even further

Ok, so it should be like Raconteurs into White Stripes headlining Fri and Jack Johnson is no Cure or Radiohead true headliner, but i'd see him, just hope more is added to solidify Fri. I saw Verve play on like a Wednesday a million years ago and Richard Aschcroft was pissed at the audience or something for not being into Verve enough, it was a great show. Gimme a 15 minute Gravity Grave and a few more good Friday bands.

Portishead, Kraftwerk, Death Cab for Cutie. Cafe Tacuba, Sasha & Digweed, Rilo Kiley, Cold War Kids, Flogging Moll make for a fun Sat.

Think i'll skip Sun despite Love n Rockets, but I need shoegazer like Spiritualized (Slowdive would work) on other days besides Sun please

Well last year I didn't go for the headliners, I dont even like Bjork and I like RATM but I'm not a huge fan. This year will be just the same. Except for
the fact that I know more bands this year than I did last year and that
makes me a bit more excited. I'm not into JJ headlining but oh well, it's not like I'm gonna watch his set anyway. Also I just turned 21 so that's good news :).
And if none of my friends want to go with me, that's ok. I'll go by myself
and meet some new people there or something lol.

Dude. Anyone who's that pissed about the line-up, not going this year, and is STILL hanging around the Coachella forums may need a new hobby. I went for the headliners last year and ended up blown away by all the other bands I got exposed to. This year will kick ass.

Metric
Tegan and Sara
Sons and Daughters
The Bees
Sia
Golgol Bordello (Missed them last year for Bjork, couldn't help it)
THE FRICKIN' BREEDERS!!!
Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks
Dan le Sac VS Scroobius Pip

What's not to love? When we get there, I will kiss every last one of you in my joy. Even the forums lurkers hanging outside the fence with sad faces.

coachella has always been more than just watching bands perform, coming from LA (revolving door of music) i can see these bands whenever I want, especially since before and after coachella they usually hit this town. Even in 05 when I felt the line up slumped I had a great time, I havent had a bad time yet and Ive been going since 2002. Not just tradition for me, I think its a goldenvoice tradition to bring a good time each year and I enjoy joining in.

the only time I was excited for a headlinger was radiohead 04 and NIN 05 other than that its always been about the smaller acts and sub headers ie arcade and JAMC last year.

this poll sort of highlights the fact that if this were the first coachella festival ever, the lineup wouldn't be good enough to get most people to go...like, coachella's got enough cred and history to get us there even though the lineup isn't that strong.

well the first coachella apparently wasnt enough to get people to go considering they lost money on it in 99, skiped 00 and 01 was only a one day fest, broke even in 02 and started gaining popularity by 03 but really still on a local and regional level, 04 being first sell out year and reaching international ears. Now it just has a huge following, I mean look at glastonbury which sells out before line up is even announced and you have to register ahead of time just to buy tickets when they go on sale.
