View Full Version : Coachella 2008 Headliners... Thumbs up or Thumbs down?

Simple poll. Do you give the headliners as announced at the press conference a thumbs up (you like it) or thumbs down (you don't like it).

This is just a simple poll of what we think if the headliners. This is not a Jack Johnson hate-fest thread nor is it an evaluation of the entire lineup as a whole. I'm just interested if most are truly disappointed in who's headlining or if it's just a select few.

Two thumbs way down for jack johnson, I mean really?? if its a joke no one is laughing, and it is not just about the headliners overall the lineup is quite thin to put it kindly, with some notable insults of "acts" toward the people that have supported this festival over the years, so sad this sucks....

What the FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!! They made us wait for this? I think that I'll just wind up going to the first night & second night. The headliners "CHUPAN VERGA!!!" Jack Johnson, man come on!!! <~~~~~~That's some class "A" bullshit. I would much rather have seen The fuckin Spice Girls. Portishead!!! Hell Yea!!! Waters??? Man, what the fuck? That ***** needs to stay on the "Dark side of the Moon"!!! I just hope that more and better acts are announced.

I had to go thumbs down. I dig this lineup overall but JJ is inexcusable, and Portishead should be in the Pixies slot.

Roger Waters playing Dark Side? FUCKING LEGENDARY. Way to close out the weekend.

1/3 = thumbs down. Sorry.

I'm excited for another year in the sun. The big thing from me this year is how many more artsits I recognized than in years past. I need to start making an extra effort to walk around the track at night. I will need the upper advantage to walk back and forth from the main stage to the dance tent.

The lineup for the Sasquatch Music Festival isn't officially announced till next month, but they're headliner alone (The Cure for a 2.5 hour set) excites me more than Coachella as a whole, and that shocks me.

01-21-2008, 06:59 PM
My opinion:

Worst line-up, to-date.
Jack Johnson even ON the bill is ridiculous, let alone a headliner.
There are a handful of decent bands/acts playing, but you can catch them at seperate more intimate shows for cheap.
Goldenvoice, Pasqual, whoever is running things this year: YOU FUCKED UP!
TICKET PRICES ARE NOT WORTH ATTENDING THIS YEAR!!!!

Weak sauce. What happened to Radiohead or My Bloody Valentine?

kind of ridiculous people think the lineup for east coast fest is already better and only radiohead are confirmed. Does that mean, one solo performance of radiohead at coachella would be better that this lineup?

John Jackson = two thumbs down
Portishead = two thumbs up (it would have been one, but I used to live a few miles from Portishead).
Roger Waters = two thumbs up (Dark Side of the Moon is going to be awesome)

I voted thumbs down though because Jack Johnson really screws it up.

yeah, of course there are a couple of good little bands....BUT....

all together, the lineup isn't worth spending so much $$$ and time...
there is people like me, who is traveling all the way from FL, skipping school and asking for some days off at work... but for this crappy lineup it is not WORTH it at all!

what the hell were they thinking?!?!

this lineup SUCKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

i think people will warm up to rw! heairng dark side in the coachella desert will be epic. u have to remember roger, even though is considerd a huge prick at times, is a visual genius and will bring out all the bells and whistles for this show.. that is a great way to end the festival.

im ok with portishead.

jj? well, i could see him performing at 7pm at the outdorr theatre but not closing the main stage. peole will be either leaving or going to watch other bands..

so just cuz we are talking only about the headliners, my grade is:

jack johnson grade: D
Portishead grade: B
Roger waters grade: A

if it was a gpa, they get a 2.66.

now just for kicks the rest of the lineup:

fri: A
Sat: A
Sun: A

gpa: 4.0 great job their. but they gotta work on those headliners. i still am scratching my head over JJ.

I think the problem w/ Waters is that he played SoCal (I believe) FIVE TIMES last year!
he played 3 nights @ the Hollywood Bowl in the beginning of the year, then came back in October & played the Bowl AGAIN, & also played Irvine.

Everytime it was this exact same set.
I really would like to see him trinkle in some other classics.

ThomThom I love your icon. That was a fun interview. :P

Portishead/Waters was pretty much established as of last night, I figured they'd have a strong third headliner since those two are sort of weak.

The way I see it, they're about equal to last years headliners. Jack Johnson and RHCP both cater to the chillout California crowd, Bjork and Portishead are both weird, downtempo electronic acts, and Roger Waters and RATM both have a pretty solid repertoire, alot of history, and an expansive fanbase.

That being said, the headliners in both years are substandard. I'm actually a bit more pissed off that 1) the second tier is so weak (Love and Rockets? Death Cab? C'mon...) and that 2) the only band that I would pay to see on Friday is Fatboy Slim, and that's really saying something.

I like Portishead, but Massive Attack were and are bigger than Portishead, and even Massive Attack didn't headline.

I felt like someone punched me in the stomach when I saw the headliners. There's a lot of smaller bands that I am excited to see; Vampire Weekend, Aesop Rock, Cold War Kids, M.I.A., Stephen Malkmus, etc., but this is definitely the worst headliners I've seen at ANY big music festival. Who the hell thought that Roger Waters was a good choice to close the festival? "Dark Side of the Moon?," does that mean he's going to play that album in it's entirety? Sounds awful. Jack Johnson? Really?!...Really? At least I know I'll be beating traffic and getting a better night's sleep than in year's past. Wish I would have waited before getting a hotel. Anyone know of anything else going on in Indio that weekend? Two thumbs (and a sad hanging head) down.

Yeah personally my sentiments exactly, I need to find my RH fix.
As soon as I know where and when.. then will decide on Coachella!

Even though we all agree the headliners are not strong or even worthy, all the indie bands performing will make it an awesome fun experience!

Cheers

P.S. Wish I had enough money to spare and not worry on budgeting this years weak lineup, must admit the festival experience by itself is worth it, but it does make you think twice now that we know the lineup.

Good call - can you imagine?!?! I am guessing that they knew there was no great need for a presale (i.e., I seriously doubt a major stampede come Friday), but it hadn't even occurred what it would have been like if they'd had a presale. I'm pissed now..I would have gone mental had I parted company with money for this line-up.

I voted thumbs down, but the more I look at the lineup the more I realize it's not all that bad. My main reason for the thumbs down is that there are too many bands repeating this year. I still think it's going to be a great 3 days.

Jack Johnson headlining on Friday is weak. However, I won't have to worry about conflicts of missing other great bands (like I did with Bjork in missing Gogol Bordello & Evil Nine). My only hope is that they add on a bigger Sahara act to close out Friday, such as Underworld or the Chemical Brothers. I think it will be great to see, Sharon Jones, Fatboy Slim, Cut Copy, Pendulum, Modeselektor, Diplo, Datarock & Aesop Rock.

Saturday looks to be the big winner right now. I much more excited to see Portishead & Kraftwerk, than I was in seeing RHCP & Tiesto last year. plus the mid day looks pretty tight. NYPC, Bonde Do Role, Stephen Malkmus, Boyze Noise, Erol Alken etc.

Sunday, looks pretty thin right now, but it has great potential. Sure Roger Waters has toured doing Dark Side of the Moon a lot over the past couple of years. I didn't take the chance to see it though and I'm sure they will make this performance much more special than his previous shows. It's a good way to end the weekend. I can still see Goldfrapp or Underworld sneaking in on that second line though. we'll see. I'd still be happy watching the Dark Side of the Moon performance, as well as getting another chance to see Gogol Bordello. Spirtualized, Metric, Simian Mobile Disco, Booka Shade, Deadmau5, also make for a good day.

Here's to learning about some other great acts on the list that I have no clue about right now.

i've been waiting more than a decade to see portishead. i hope they play some other shows over here cause' i won't be going this year. outside of a handful of acts (verve, spiritulized, the streets, kraftwerk) the lineup is weak. jack johnson?? wtf?? so disappointed My Bloody Valentine is not there, that would have sold me. maybe next year.

Okay, I have found that every other year is epic. This is an off year. It's always the case! I wasn't that suprised with an off line up. It's an other year. Portishead is okay. I'll go Saturday. That will give the psychadelic drug users an extra ticket for Sunday! Have fun guys! Those were the days....

i've been waiting more than a decade to see portishead. i hope they play some other shows over here cause' i won't be going this year.
I saw them open for Depeche Mode in the 90's TRUST ME you're not missing anything amazing...Just drop some E about an hour before they go on...That should do the trick...

Ok so I understand that last year's lineup is very tough to top but they could have at least made a slightly more valiant effort to contend with it! I mean, at the top of last year's poster was Rage Against The Machine...I (along with a good majority of Coachella goers) was literally almost shitting my pants the first time I read it! This year the first name that was so tragically presented was Jack Johnson!!??? To put it simply, this year's lineup is altogether incomprable with last year's. With the magnitude of Coachella 2007's headliners I was not expecting 2008's to surpass but I was hoping for some comparison. Roger Water's name does not hold the same luster as if Pink Floyd was in it's place. Granted any hopes of that have been inevitably thrown out the window but the I believe the spectrum of equally respectable and notable alternatives is quite a bit wider than seems to have been considered. I can really see ticket sales plummeting with regards to 2007 based on seasoned music enthusiests' expectations.

I kinda agree with boyalien0

I mean I do like Portishead, but I woudn't have thought they'd headline
Maybe I'm not a big follower so I don't know how big they stand as of now
any chance radiohead will be added and steal the headlining spot? (please dont take that seriously)
and i have to admit (takes a deep breath)
i do kinda sorta in a weird way enjoy jack johnson's music

:X

i mean upside down and sitting, waiting wishing are pretty catchy, and even though i wouldn't watch his entire set, i might catch a bit of it

and roger waters is definately a plus
sure he's some "washed up guy from pink floyd trying to make money and limelight by playing his old band''s album" or he's "living in the past"
but i know a handful of people who went to his show in Irvine, CA and LA and I heard nothing but awsome reviews

other than the fact that he protested against Bush for 30 min or so
but eh darkside is totally worth it

i will be spending my time watching m.i.a., the verve, devotchka, the cold war kids, cafe tacvba, porter, austin tv and many more !

Recent polls show a fifth of Americans can't locate good music at a music store. Why do you think this is?

I personally believe that US Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some people out there in our nation don't have good music, and I believe that our choices, like such as Jack Johnson and the MTV, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should -- our music over here in the US should help the US -- or should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our children.

It has to be a JJ hate thread because it poisons the entire 3 days. I won'y spite myself by skipping 3 days of great bands, but there needs to be an organized boycott of the main stage on Friday. The only way Golden Voice will get the message never to repeat this anal rape of their loyalists is to have 2000 people sitting on their asses for JJ.

I'm excited to see Portishead. Indifferent about Roger Waters (why not Led Leppelin:(?). I like Jack Johnson, but only when I'm on the beach or out on the boat. He is not a Coachella headliner. I'll probably check out the Raconteurs instead of him.

I also would like to see more of a hip hop selection... One Be Lo, Blackalicious, Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys. And please bring back Gotan Project! That was an incredible show last year.

In the future there will be three kids having a conversation about their grandparents. One kid will say, "my grandfather saw Jack Johnson in concert", and everyone will laugh at that little boy.... another will say, "My grandfather saw Portishead in concert", and everyone will say, "Who?"
And the third kid will say, "My grandfather saw Roger Waters in concert", and the look on everyone's face will make that little kid proud to be of your lineage.

Ok so we all love Radiohead, Chili Peppers and the million other bands that could've played at Coachella...but we could see these bands anyway, they go on tour all the time....

Yah coachella could've brought us the same old stuff...but they decided to give us two amazing opportunities to see bands that rarely play anymore...in the most incredible venue. None of other musical festivals could've gotten these unique bands...

When was the last time you ever had an opportunity to see Portishead live... And Dark Side of the Moon is going to be unbelievable... Desert Sky, mountains in background, insane light and special effect show. I think Coachella wanted to give us something truly unique and different this year.

Yah I wanted some other bands too, but I have a feeling this might be the best Coachella yet....

yeah I agree, its just that most of us being dreamers and all that imagined that same scenario but those being subheadliners and with some top headliners to follow, now that would've been f#$%ing amazing and I just wonder what the reaction would've been if such was the case, wow!

but overall the coachella experience is worth it..

I think that the headliners are usually pretty good. Jack Johnson is the shit, but should be playing at sun down, that would be more chill. My dream team of HEADLINERS would be:

FRIDAY: Chemical Brothers

SATURDAY: Muse

Sunday: Red Hot Chili Peppers

Although the chili peppers played last year, they would not have the right vibe for this year. They need Radiohead or somethin. I also wanna see Daft Punk again. They made my year at Vegoose.
