anybody else think they may do it right this year and keep the best for last.....i.e Daft Punk/Kanye/Madonna(not saying I dig her shit) in 06......big names right?.......until that fucking blue poster comes out.....I just can't see Jack Johnson in large text........weak....dredg is confirmed which is fucking sweet.....but not on the line up....wierd.....and acts are surprizingly low (mid 40s/day).....I really get the feeling we are in for a surprize..

if not down to throw in for a time machine go to woodstock.......then Coachella 09' where Radiohead/DAFT PUNK/Led Zeppelin are headlining!

i think that they made a decent lineup and then will add big names after tickets are sold so that the tickets wont be sold out immediately and real coachella fans can go.

Don't get your hopes up for the additions. Yeah, he said they would add some, but don't think it will be anybody huge. It might be awesome, might not be, just don't build it up to be something big and get disappointed when its not...just sayin.

daft punk came a couple days after the first poster was made.

madonna was maybe a couple weeks to a month before the festival

kanye was only revealed when they released set times.

im callin a co-headliner to be added on friday, and some sub-headliners added to sunday.

Nothing too mindblowing there either.

I don't know if this lineup can be saved. I'm excited because it's still Coachella and there are still bands who will be awesome (Portishead, Fatboy Slim, Kraftwerk, Justice, Gogol, etc.). But seriously, unless they're bringing in the robots Friday, things look kinda bleak.

So there's still hope. The Suits at Goldenvoice could not think for a minute that ticket sales would yield comparable results to past lineups. They're either trying to deter scalpers or baby boomers who buy tickets for one or two token acts, IMO. Plus, since next year is the 10th year anniversary, they need to take advantage of this year's potential ticket sales...or it would seem that way.

that really did comfort me. it makes sense.

Does it make sense because you could really imagine them doing it? Or does it make sense because we are hoping beyond hope that it happens?

I choose the latter. But Shit I hope Jack Johnson gets bumped off that top line soon. I would actually see him there -- I just don't see him being the primary act of the day.

F00FIGHTER20

hoping beyond hope.......but they either still do have more big names to reveal, or they spent all of their money on Roger Waters expecting that haveing the words "Dark Side of the Moon" next to his name was going to be jaw dropping.

I know it's total speculation, but it seems more possible that they would make some late additions this year than they would've, say, last year. There are definitely 3 pretty glaring holes on the poster that would be filled nicely with names.

Other thing is that last year there were 3 or 4 bands on the second line of each day. This year there are only 2. Considering that the ticket price increased this means that we're either getting ripped off or there will be a significant add or two each day.

Either way there is no way this show sells out in its current state....although i personally like the undercard as much as years past.

You know who I also thought could have been added (being an avid Sonic Youth fan) was Thurston Moore, doin his solo gig.

i can't see anything HUGE getting added...the announced headliners have a contract and some say on the line-up beneath them so a radiohead or something won't be added..you might get a star name for a afternoon slot like a Beck, Madonna etc.

the scalpers argument doesn't wash with me...the idea for coachella organizers is to sell tickets fast. they have to get money fast to finance the festival, slow ticket sales would make lenders nervous. i am sure if you go it will be great for you. but for me it is not worth the 6 hour drive and expense when i know of other bands who are playing in may/june/july

"stuff up our sleeves" = we're still trying to secure better bands

Mars Volta & Imperial Teen & Goldfrapp make the most sense... and the most obvious pick for surprise artist would be Aphex (they dont' want to put him on the poster in case he no-shows, but if he does show up, they can call it a surprise guest)... but seriously, i don't see any names bigger than the headliners being added, MAYBE a sub-headliner (and most likely, it would be on Friday due to the recent response to the lineup; but that's what we thought last year & no one was added; but of course Bjork > Johnson)...

I want Floater to be added!!!!

I was hoping Curious George would be on a screen... then 2D (of Gorillaz) would come along and kick his ass (animated). And then De La Soul would come out in real life and beat down JJ with a surf board, say "SHABAT!" and Damon would come down from a space ship singing, "Feel Good"...

i really do think this is Stagecoach's fault... the first year had 'fair' attendance (it would have been considered horrible for Coach attendance though) and this really is the 'make it or break it' year for Stagecoach... they DEF. shelled out $$$ to get names for that fest, this year, and i think less was left for Coach to secure names (probably hoping that the name Coachella itself would be enough to still sell it out; which it will), plus they're probably gonna make a fatter profit this year by not shelling out millions for a Rage or Smiths... i can't see anyone (other than Waters) getting close to those kind of figures this year...

But NEXT year... 10th anniverary... THAT's when they'll shell out for the names...

You don't think they spent some pretty big $$s for Portishead? I think that is been an on-going rumor since 2001! They haven't toured for what, 10 years??

Yes, but Portishead are not headlining specifically for Coachella, nor is Coachella their first performance. It is quite possibly their highest profile show, though. But for a band that could probably barely fill the Greek, I'm sure they did not get tons of $$$ from GV.

I am extremely surprised neither Chemical Brother nor Underworld were on the line up. My bet is Friday has one of those added.
Also, Mars Volta being added to Saturday would be amazing
Volta--->Portishead--->Kraftwerk

Ugh, I would LOATHE that. I want to get a good spot for Portishead but would have to forgo that plan if Mars Volta played before them.

Paul said he's got some "tricks" up his sleeve. The slogan for Trix cereal is "Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids." Rabbit in the Moon had been confirmed to play and are nowhere on the poster. I believe he was specifically referencing RitM as being an addition when he made the aforementioned statement.

Or what if they're adding a SIXTH stage and the additions are going to be a bunch of hip-hop artists who will play there?

did I miss something over the last 5 years- why has modest mouse never played? last year would have been perfect with a new album out, but this year could desperately use them. Same with Femi Kuti- would bring something severely missing from this year's lineup (but if he's not touring the US, he's not playing the US).
fingers crossed for Cohen.

Well one of the problems with everyone's complaints this year is that they are the result of Goldenvoice actually listening to their fans and not ignoring them. Each year there are waves of newbies who complain that Coachella sucks because they didn't have this band or that band even though those bands played at Coachella 1, 2, 3, or 4, etc. so in an effort to please the new fans and turn them into veterans they add some retreads. And to please the veterans there are some different headliners(Good to note that the list of the best bands in the world is incredibly short). The other overlooked issue is the issue of the bands themselves actually wanting to play Coachella and of the price being right...personally I was taken off guard by Jack Johnson(even though he did play Coachella in 2002 when Bjork and Oasis headlined) he just doesn't scream headliner to me. But I know he does have some fans. I know some bands will be added and I am looking forward to/hoping for certain additions. But what many people on the boards forget is that Coachella is essentially NOT a completely mainstream festival. It has become more mainstream over the years but for me Coachella has always been the place you are eager to go to because you can see the band that you never thought would even come to America/The West Coast/or wherever you live. ...I am jazzed for Portishead, Animal Collective, Vampire Weekend, Rogue Wave, Datarock, Devotchka, Spiritualized, The Breeders and many others, I completely understand the disappointment but just remember the festival wasn't created to please you personally...you can always cancel your hotel reservation.

i dunno what you're on about "cracker", but coachella changes things up all the time (headliners have included rage and portishead... how's that for variety?). jack johnson isn't change, it's just a greedy attempt to appeal to bro dumbasses. especially with news of the APW festival, sounds like GV has spread itself too thin and didn't want to put all its eggs in one (coachella) basket... hence we get the bargain-bin jack(off) johnson as a headlining act at one of the world's biggest and best music festivals

To answer all your question's about me, which is actually a little flattering, 2007 had too much variety, people going to see bjork and rage, those two just dont mix, hardcore rage people at a bjork festival, disaster, '06 and '08 are perfect examples of coachella reaching to what it should be, 06' had psychedelic rock (tool) to fucking daft punk, most epic 2 days of any1 who went that year, '08 will be similar in my opinion, i think a lot of people will be surprised at how good coachella is going to be this year... and when i went to highschool i was the only white person in my graduating class..

digitalface
01-23-2008, 08:16 PM
Yeah. I think the reason we demand so much is even though some of the lineup could be amazing, we know that all the conflicts makes catching much of it impossible. In order justify the minimum $6-700 you'll be spending on the weekend, it helps to have more than a couple personal must-sees. At this point, if GV doesn't add a thing or two more to Friday, it'll be super comfy for those dedicated folks who go regardless of the lineup. It's tough, because it's really more a concert than a community event. I think if it moved more in a music-centric community direction, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Oh gosh, did Paul Tollett really say that? I didn't catch that! What's it mean? Does it mean Jack Johnson is a total ass-kiss? I mean, the guy doesn't want the promoters to pick out all the brown M&Ms or something? Yeah, that's it. And he probably only had 10 assorted condoms written into his rider instead of the normal 25. I don't know why so many people are in here hoping for repeats as the late additions. My biggest complaint is that Coachella seems to be running out of new bands and there are enough repeats already. If they're going to add acts, I really hope that they're bands who have never been at Coachella before, especially not within the last few years (Radiohead was JUST THERE). And Kanye? Daft Punk? I go to Coachella to see bands I haven't seen before, not to see the same exact thing year after year.

DEVO would be great lead in for Kraftwerk.

Give me something, anything.

DEVO would be awesome! I love the new song they have out that is featured in that Dell XPS commercial

Goldfrapp and PJ Harvey have never played Coachella before and they're two of the biggest wishlist acts, from what I can see.

Paul Tollett said in his press conference in Mexico City that "Jack Johnson is everything we like in a headliner." Not sure what that means exactly, but I bet they do something for him.
I think it means,"He won't run past the curfew, and his fans won't bring police helicopters down on the campgrounds in the middle of the night."

Mark my words, Ben Harper and G. Love, and probably Matt Costa as well, will be joining Jack Johnson Friday night.

Also, expect a three or four relatively large, solid adds. Goldfrapp, Underworld, PJ Harvey, maybe some unpredictable others. There should be an additional three or four minor adds.

Did you hear this somewhere or is it just a hunch? Just wondering..

Also, on that post regarding other Pink Floyd members joining Roger Waters, is that the trick up Paul's sleeve??

However, if STP do play, Mr. Malkmus may be enticed to do Range Life, and then there could be a boxing match between him and Weiland during JJ's set. That'd make it all worthwhile, really.

The trick up his sleve are the tens of thousands of people who are going to attend this festival regardless of the line up....

Personally I am just fine with the line up though adds would not be unwelcome

i really do think this is Stagecoach's fault... the first year had 'fair' attendance (it would have been considered horrible for Coach attendance though) and this really is the 'make it or break it' year for Stagecoach... they DEF. shelled out $$$ to get names for that fest, this year, and i think less was left for Coach to secure names (probably hoping that the name Coachella itself would be enough to still sell it out; which it will), plus they're probably gonna make a fatter profit this year by not shelling out millions for a Rage or Smiths... i can't see anyone (other than Waters) getting close to those kind of figures this year...

But NEXT year... 10th anniverary... THAT's when they'll shell out for the names...

That's funny, I would have bet they spent quite a bit more dough on Stagecoach last year than this year.

But if we're thinking about where all the dough for the big acts went, we should look no further than the infamous East Coast festival which is of course called All Points West.

last year had two big names per day and 2 or 3 much smaller 2nd tier acts... Dwight and Willie sorta cancel each other out... Big & Rich and Gretchen Wilson >>> Sara Evans & Miranda Lampert... this year has 4 big names the first day & 5 the second... WAAAAY bigger lineup than last year's...

DUH!!! Jack Johnson & Radiohead are headlining All Points West... Why the FUCK do people keep saying that's draining the funds??? JJ's probably getting headlining spot on both for little or no cash & more for the exposure/rep.... and Radiohead doesn't garner $1million per show like some, i think they're only doing APW because they aren't able to do Coachella and GV bid hard to get them...

Whoa tiger, at the risk of sounding like I actually care about country music ... Kenny Chesney and Brooks & Dunn probably command more cash than anybody on this year's lineup.

The Judds thing is a PR stunt and the rest of the acts big but mid-tier. Tim McGraw is the only person in this year's lineup who's getting a lot of dough to put on his boots and stomp around the stage.

Is the point where I admit to being 30-something and having seen John Mayer perform? I played DS games and waited for it to be over so I could see Tom Waits :), but he wasn't really that offensive. I guess I'd be more on board with this John Mayer and JJ hatred if I'd actually listened to a lot of radio and watched a lot of tv in order to be overexposed and sick of them.

FUCK NO DOUBT. I would rather piss on a no doubt ticket than attend a show. As for Additions that could save the lineup, most of you are putting bandaids on a broken arm. There needs to be some sever revamping before i cough up 500 bucks on a coachella weekend. FUCK YOU GOLDENVOICE!

P.S. Fuck Gol-den-voice!-!-!-! (because you are cheap fags who can't pony up to a worthwhile festival).
